A message from T H E C U R AT O R
In chemistry, collision theory teaches that one must bring two atoms within proximity of each other for a chance to form a bond and share electrons. Proximity is the prerequisite.
We gather today to induce proximity and to celebrate the conviction that knowledge should analogously be shared. We do so as part of a global movement that has been gathering leaders, thinkers, and doers in over two thousand cities since 2009.
Our theme “Pioneers, O Pioneers!” embodies the broad spectrum of individual journeys and personal ambition that shape our shared experience. And the language recognizes the innate drive to learn, to overcome challenges, and to advance human ideals. Our speakers are rising to the occasion, and they will share their most compelling idea. If their words move you, let them feel your presence.
We are also unveiling Project CASL, an inaugural effort to tackle “problems worth solving.” Members of the community converged to develop and launch a platform for deaf attendees to stream the sign language interpretation on a tablet while home viewers enjoy the same interpretation remotely. This is unprecedented, and we’re delighted to have you with us for this special milestone.
The TEDxBaltimore team of volunteers has worked tirelessly for this day, as we strive to form a more perfect community. Your presence elevates us toward that ideal.

Conceived in April 2013 following a meeting with Prof. Derek Braun at Gallaudet University, Project CASL is a streaming platform for broadcasting the signing of remote sign language interpreters to attendees and home viewers, without requiring any modifications to the conference stage or workflow. This allows us to connect conferences and deaf consumers irrespective of each’s location.

Pioneers, O Pioneers!
I celebrate those who harbor vulnerability. I seek out those who carry the creative flame. I yearn for those who call deep on their courage to march, impatient, and full of action. Pioneers! And I choose to honor this cause: ________________________
