Technology and Training for the Future Captain Rob Dyas Director of Operations Bond Offshore Helicopters

Helicopter Safety Awareness Course

Scope

• Technology and the Human-Machine Interface

• Conversion Courses – roles of EASA/OEMs

• Operators Conversion Courses

• Training Manuals

• Evidence Based Training

TECHNOLOGY – ACAS / TCAS

• ACAS/TCAS uses aircraft transponders to track nearby aircraft

• This system is mandated on fixed wing transport aircraft over 5700 kg

• When another aircraft approaches the crew is warned (TCAS – visual search/no avoidance)

• If the other aircraft poses a threat the crew are shown how to avoid the threat on TCAS II.

• TCAS II – aircraft gives vertical guidance and in some cases autopilot assists in avoidance

TECHNOLOGY – Glass Cockpit / Autopilot

EC225 Glass Cockpit

TECHNOLOGY – Approach Procedures • Currently, the Airborne Radar Approach procedure is used when the

weather offshore by day is below a 600ft cloud base or 1500m visibility (1200ft or 5km at night).

– This procedure has been proven to be safe and reliable over many years.

• Trials on new profile looking at new aircraft autopilot software and the use of Satellite Based Augmentation (SBAS) & Differential GPS to improve GPS position and navigation integrity.

• Similar profile used in Visual Gate Approach (VGA) for good-weather night arrivals at installations.

TECHNOLOGY – TAWS / EGPWS

• A terrain awareness and warning system (TAWS) aims to prevent "controlled flight into terrain" (CFIT) accidents. The actual systems in current use are known as ground proximity warning system and Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS)

• New aircraft being delivered are coming with Terrain Avoidance / Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning Systems. Rather than working on fixed height thresholds (100ft warning), warnings are generated on a combination of height, speed, rate of descent and a terrain database.

• Research with manufacturers continue to optimise the height/speed/rate of descent combinations for offshore use.

• Pilot now knows how to fly the aircraft, but now moves on to how to use it in the role and area that they will operate in.

• Introduction to the offshore role and operations to offshore helidecks, unstable decks etc.

• Simulator includes; airfield familiarisation, offshore helideck operations and Line Orientated Flying Training (LOFT).

Evidence Based Training (EBT)

• Steering your training system towards identified areas, through existing systems:

– Flight Safety

– Helicopter Flight Data Monitoring (HFDM)

– Training Standards Data

• Not just the standard regulatory recurrent items, although some are still required.
