A comment my husband, Tim, recently made whilewe were doing yard work at my mom’s was simple, but struck me as profound, “You’ve got to have theright tools, hun.”My garden shears and rake paled in comparison to

his backpack leaf blower, tractor and shovels ofevery sort. Our two days of yard work with the righttools netted an amazing amount of completed work, which Mom and I never would have accomplishedwithout Tim and his turbo-charged lawn and gardenequipment. Obviously, having the right tools is nothing new to

you as a shop owner or technician, however, some-times it’s hard to know what to buy or how to figureif a tool will deliver your return on investment. So,when it comes to specialty tools or expensive diag-nostics, how do you choose what to buy? While doing some research for this month’s issue of

TechShop, I found an AVI video featuring Bob Patten-gale (see page 17). In it, Bob says that while you’ll behard-pressed to find a diagnostic tool that will serv-ice all makes and models, it will help if you decidewhich vehicle makes you most work with or wouldlike to focus on to help you choose which tool willbe right for you. Again, simple but astute advice.

Fatherly AdviceSince this is our June issue, and in the spirit of Father’s Day, the other day at the office, I asked Andrew Markel — the editor of Brake & Front End,Underhood Service and Servicio Automotriz, and in ad-dition to all of that has written multiple articles forTechShop — about the tools his father has recom-mended to him. Andrew’s dad, Gene, is a retired

trainer for General Motors. Over the years, Gene has shared his knowledge

with Andrew, including some that’s common sense, some insightful and some funny: “It is in the book!” — This is advice passed down

from previous Markel generations about looking uprepair information instead of asking another techni-cian.“You can never have too many hammers or pry bars.”“Never scrimp on screwdrivers.”“You lost another 10 mm socket?”“Don’t use a torque wrench for that!” and “Make sure you have all your tools before you shut the

hood.”A little common sense, your expansive technical

knowledge, some help from Dad, and, of course, theright tools will bringyou your best returnon your investment.TS

‘Don’t Use a Torque Wrench for That!’Common Sense Tool Advice Can Still Be Insightful

AAnn AAddvvaanncceeddMMiissffiirree SSttoorryyThe Story of P0301

This article will document code P0301 —Misfire Activity on Cylinder No. 1 — a codemany of you have run into, but sometimes we

have case studies that are worthy of mention. Our subject vehicle is a 2007 Mercury

Mountaineer. The vehicle has a P0301 stored in itsmemory. The lead tech working on this vehicle hasdetermined that there is a mechanical issue withcylinder no. 1. Figure 1 shows the engine configura-tion for your review.Misfire codes have become the most challenging

codes because they involve very careful reviewtoday vs. many years prior. I would like to offer a suggested plan of attack on

this vehicle. We will start our game plan by firstlooking at the scan data. It is suggested to look at thepre- and post-oxygen sensor activity and note whatis happening. Our subject vehicle has good switchingactivity on the pre-oxygen sensor, indicating that thevehicle is in fuel control, but we noted that the post-oxygen sensor has a slightly higher than normal volt-age value, implying that this Mountaineer may havea tendency to run slightly rich. The next step is to review the fuel trim values. This

vehicle’s fuel trims show fairly low values, suggest-ing that the misfire activity may be ignition related. This, of course, must be proven.

Let’s review our process for success: 1. Review pre- and post-oxygen sensor activity.2. Review fuel trims (short term and long term).

The total correct will be their summation. If the fueltrims are not very significant in value, the problemis possibly ignition related; if the fuel trims are significant in value, the problem is possibly fuelrelated.

3. You must then perform a mechanical analysis tosee if the vehicle is mechanically sound. This will helprule out any mechanical issues.4. After confirming there are no mechanical issues,

you will check for an ignition- or fuel-related failurebased on the fuel trim and oxygen sensor data. Figure 2 is a pictorial showing the fuel trims and

oxygen information from the Mountaineer.The scan data on this vehicle appears to be good;

there were no signs of adverse activity other than theP0301 code that was set in the PCM’s memory. SeeFigures 3 and 4. After the above data was obtained, we took a look at

the mechanical integrity of the engine. Pico Scopesoftware was used to get data quickly; Figures 5 and6 show what we obtained. The mechanical test per the Pico Scope software

showed that the mechanical integrity appears to beOK, it is now fair to mention that the cylinder headon bank 1 was sent out to a machine shop to evaluate. A cranking vacuum test shows some interesting

activity. If one were to start at where the ignition

event for cylinder no. 7 starts as indicated by thearrow in Figure 6, this is the vacuum pull (intakeevent) for cylinder no. 5. The next series of intake events occur in the follow-

ing order. Please note the aggressive downwardspike, this is the vacuum pull for cylinder no. 3. Itshows this behavior because the cylinder just prior toit is cylinder no. 1, which is misfiring. Cylinder no. 1has slowed down due to the misfire activity, whencylinder no. 3 is not its intake event, this cylinderspeeds up. If you label the first vacuum pull as no. 5,you would then follow the firing order to label therest. The sequence would be as follows: 5-4-8-1-3-7-2-6. The generic scan data shows we have good oxygensensor activity and low fuel trim values. The fuel trimvalues were +8 for bank 2 and +4 for bank 1. Thisimplies that this may be ignition related. A review of the ignition system on this vehicle

shows it to be a coil-on-plug system. All of the coilson bank 1 were scoped to get an idea of the ignitionactivity on this bank. Please review Figures 7 and 8on page 10.

Figure 9 is the picture we obtained for cylinder no. 1on ignition. The next step is to swap the coils between cylinders

1 and 3. We swapped the coils and found that therewas no change. We then decided to swap the spark

plugs between cylinders 1 and 3 and found that themiss followed where we placed the bad spark plug. The coil connector was checked for a good feed and

ground circuit as well. It is not clear per the pictorial,but on the good coil firing (cylinder no. 3) we have aninput voltage of 14.7 volts. The input voltage for cylinder no. 1 is 12.3 volts;

there is a voltage drop in the circuit indicating thatadditional resistance was in the circuit in addition tothe bad spark plug firing. I then asked the tech to scope the other bank to

obtain more information and we found a bad sparkplug firing on cylinder no. 5; this had not been identi-fied by the PCM as an issue yet. The final conclusion that we have drawn on this is to

make sure to check feeds and grounds to the coil con-nectors, be sure to use the correct spark plugs andscope the coil firings to make sure the job is complete. This Pulling Codes case is now solved. TS

Page 16: Tech Shop, June 2014

In the first half of 2014, NHTSA has issued morethan 15 recalls where the fix was to reflash a mod-ule on a vehicle. In the same time frame, more

than 100 TSBs have also been issued where the solu-tion is to reflash a module. These recalls and TSBscover a wide variety of problems from brake wear tobattery drain. These updates aren’t just for cars that are still under

warranty. A lot of the TSBs are for vehicles that arepast warranty and resolve problems occurring on ve-hicles that have accumulated miles and wear andhave seen conditions not anticipated by the automak-er. These are not fixes they intend the dealer to do forfree. This is why you cannot ignore reflashing any longer

(if you have been). Developing the in-house capabilityis critical for productivity and customer retention.Below are seven tools you need for reflashing as wellas eight problems that can be resolved by reflashing.

7 TOOLS YOU NEED TO REFLASH

1. Computer Purchasing and setting up a PC can be the most diffi-cult part of reflashing. Most OEMs require aWindows-based PC with specific hardware, operat-ing system requirements and user settings. MostOEMs specify Vista and Windows 7. Some systemsspecify that the system be 32- or 64-bit versions ofWindows. Make sure to read all of the OEMs’ recom-

mendations for the largest volume of vehicles youplan to reflash. The computer should only be used forreflashing and navigating OEM websites.

2. Internet ConnectionYou must have a stable Internet connection to reflashmodules. You can’t download a vehicle reflash file athome and install it when you get to the shop. The PCmust remain connected to the Internet during theentire procedure or the module could be damaged. Ifyour Wi-Fi is unstable, use a LAN/ethernet connection.

3. J2534 Pass-Thru ProgrammerA J2534 pass-thru programmer is a box and/or cableable to connect the PC to the vehicle and communicatewith the correct pins on the OBD II connection. It is aninterface that acts as a gateway that translates the mes-sages back and forth between the PC and controllerinto a protocol that is understood by the vehicle. Most reflashing methods require the use of the four

pins in the DLC that are open to the manufacturer.

4. Voltage Supply Some reflash sessions can last more than 45 minutes. If the battery voltage drops below a set voltage, the

reflashing process will stop and possibly damage themodule. Voltages are changing and can vary from 12 to14 volts. Check the OEM’s website for information. Note: Your old battery charger should not be used.

There are battery chargers/power supplies made specifi-cally for reflashing that can deliver the correct voltageand amps during the procedure.

5. Advanced Scan ToolYour scan tool should be the equivalent to the factorytool or better. Your scan tool must be able to readCalibration Verification Numbers (CVN) and Mode $09data. It should also be able to perform certain relearnand recalibration procedures.

6. SubscriptionsYou will need to subscribe to the OEM’s service infor-mation website. Subscription fees vary by OEM andhave several payment options. Make sure you writedown the logins and passwords. Before you startreflashing, take time to register and navigate the OEMs’websites. Bookmark important pages on the sites.

7. TimeYou will not be able to perform flash reprogrammingstraight out of the box. It takes time to set up the com-puter and register at the OEM websites. On a slow day, take some time to experiment on shop vehicles.Nothing is worse than having to wait for a verificationemail from an OEM to start up a subscription. Learnbefore you burn. Reflashing procedures take time.

8 VEHICLE PROBLEMS SOLVED BYREFLASHING

1. Carbon Buildup on Direct Injection Engines: Newreflash programming can help stop carbon buildup betterthan any fuel additive on some vehicles. New softwarecan reduce carbon deposits by reducing the exposure ofthe valves to conditions that cause carbon buildup by ad-justing valve and spark timing. Don’t assume that youwill find a TSB saying that a reflash of the ECM will cor-rect a carbon buildup problem because most of the up-dates will be contained in normal housekeeping calibra-tions that may never say anything about a problem. Youmay even have to check the OEM’s website to see if thevehicle has the latest version of the software.

2. P0420 Converter Efficiency Codes: If you have a carwith a converter efficiency code in your shop comingback even after oxygen sensor and converter replace-ment, it can be frustrating. The long-term solution mightbe reflashing.

Most converters start out at about 99% efficiency whennew and quickly taper off to about 95% efficiency after4,000 miles or so of driving. As long as efficiency doesn’tdrop off more than a few percentage points, the convert-er will do a good job of cleaning up the exhaust. But ifefficiency drops much below 92%, it will usually turn onthe MIL.New programs can decrease the sensitivity drops in ef-

ficiency that may be caused by monitors that are toosensitive for the real world. Also, some of the reflashTSBs require the installation of an updated oxygen sen-sor the new reflash software is calibrated for.

3. Oil Consumption: If you have a customer complain-ing that they are adding oil often, the solution may be toreflash the ECM and not rebuild the engine. Almostevery vehicle with cylinder deactivation can benefitfrom a reflash update. Honda and GM have issued TSBsrecommending reflash of the ECM to solve oil consump-tion problems on vehicles with cylinder deactivation. The new programming changes the valve timing so ex-cessive vacuum is not created on the combustion strokethat can suck oil into the rings.

4. Brake Wear Problems: Have a vehicle that is wear-ing rear pads faster than the fronts? The solution couldbe reflashing the ABS module. Ford and Honda havesolved brake wear issues by reflashing the ABS moduleand implementing new pad formulations. Many OEMs use electronic brake force distribution or

EBD to dynamically change the brake bias using theABS modulator. EBD eliminates the need for proportion-ing and combination valves. It can also change the biasas the drive slows down to prevent a nosedive. Newsoftware updates the behavior to maximize pad life.

5. Transmission Problems: Have a customer withtransmission problems like slipping, shift flare or poorshift quality? The solution could be a reflash. With five-,six- and even nine-speed automatic transmissions, theshift behavior is regulated with more sensors and sole-noids than ever before. Reflashing new calibrations forthe transmission can solve shifting and even wear issueswithout having to rebuild the transmission. Many OEMs are issuing new calibrations to account

for wear to the bands and clutches that they did not seein their initial testing.

6. Battery Drains: If you get that vehicle that has an intermittent battery drain that can’t be detected duringnormal diagnostics, look for a TSB that might include areflash. With most modern vehicles, the vehicle doesn’tcompletely shut down when the key is removed fromthe ignition. Some modules will stay awake and evenwake up while the car is sitting overnight. If a module

or system doesn’t shut down ordoesn’t receive the correct informa-tion from a sleeping module, it canstay awake and drain the battery. These problems can be extremely in-termittent and frustrating to solve, but a check of the TSBs and latestcalibration can save your shop andthe customer time and money.

7. Component Replacement: Ifyou’re installing a new module, you’ll have to flash it with the correctprogram to complete the repair. Some modules have switchablePROMs or come already pro-grammed, but these are becomingthe exception and not the norm.

8. ABS Problems: A commontheme of some recent TSBs has beenthe performance of the ABS modula-tor. The majority of these TSBs areabout the sensitivities of the systemso the customer will not notice low-speed activation or a self-test whenthe vehicle reaches 5-10 mph. TS
