DR PRUE SALTEROn Monday a joint meeting with St George Girls was held at their high school. It was especially tailored by Dr Prue Salter for students in Year 7, to assist them with their skills in this area. Students were provided with extensive tips and families were given written information of great use to them in the future. Next year, it will be Tech’s turn to host the event. I thank Kirk Grinham for his coordination of this event. Further details about Dr Prue Salter can be obtained from http://www.enhanced-learning.net/ Login details including username and password can be found on Page 15 in this Tech Talk.

SECONDARY PRINCIPAL’S COUNCILI attended a meeting of secondary principal delegates in the city in May and the meeting was addressed by Minister Rob Stokes, the relatively recent government appointment to the education portfolio. The previous Minister Adrian Picolli was a strong advocate for Gonski funding the needs based model which supports disadvantaged students. Minister Stokes also supports Gonski and told the meeting that he was considering mounting a legal challenge to the new funding model proposed by Malcolm Turnbull on the grounds that many public schools would lose funding promised to them in 2018 and 19, and that private schools would be better off under the new Turnbull model. Under the proposed new agreement Sydney Tech stands to lose nearly half a million dollars in future government funding: enough money for us to introduce a range of innovations to support student learning at the school.

YEAR 7 PARENT/TEACHER AFTERNOONNext Friday, 9 June, Year 7 parents will be attending parent teacher afternoon to discuss how their sons have settled into Tech. Information about this has already gone out to parents. I look forward to seeing you there.

P&C REPORTWe are already in June and half the year has flown past. Year 12 students are preparing for their mid year exams and the school holidays will be upon us very soon.

LAST MEETINGOur last meeting was held on Tuesday 2 May 2017. We were slightly down on numbers most probably due to this being the first week back from the school holidays. A big thank you to all the parents who attended.Jacqueline Lyons updated all present on the Anzac Day Commemorations. The STHS Annual Report for 2016 was also discussed and Jacqueline highlighted the achievements and improvements made. A new complaint handling procedure was also distributed and discussed. The work on the electricity upgrade and the boy’s toilets is progressing and is expected to be completed in the second half of 2017.Diane Wilson (Deputy Principal) reported that half yearly exams for Years 7-10 will be held in weeks 4, 5 and 6. She also updated those present about Parent Teacher interviews which will be held on 15 June for Year 11 and Year 12 and on 24 July for Years 8, 9 and 10.

GONSKI FUNDINGA new funding model was announced in the budget delivered by the Turnbull Federal government which is to replace the Gonski funding model that was in place. Although we have received a letter from the Hon Minister of Education stating that this is a better model for STHS our research shows a different picture as detailed below.Under the Gonski model, STHS was to receive $243,884 in 2018. Under the new ‘Turnbull’ model, the 2018 funding figure is reduced to $117,700, a substantial reduction of $126,184. In 2019, this figure was to rise to $462,308 as per the old model. With the Turnbull model this figure will suffer a massive reduction of $319,953.We will be writing to the Hon Minister of Education urging him to honour the commitment made at the last election and fund the Gonski model to its completion. We also request all of you to express your concerns to all your elected representatives at every opportunity, as this is a very important issue that will have an effect on the quality of education received by our children attending public school system. Two media releases can be found on Pages 36 and 37 in this Tech Talk.

JOINT MEETING WITH ST GEORGE’S GIRLS P&CWe organise a joint meeting of the STHS & SGGHS P&Cs annually. We will be hosting this meeting this year and this will be held on Tuesday, 1 August 2017 at 7pm in the school hall. Our guest speaker for this event will be Dr Jae Jung. IMPORTANT HEALTH INFORMATION

A student in our school is currently receiving treatment which results in a lowered immune system. This means that the student is more prone to getting ill from infections. As the student is not contagious but has a chronic illness, it is important that he participates actively in the day to day school program without any major limitations. A major concern is that if this student develops measles, chicken pox, whooping cough or influenza, he could become seriously ill. It is important that we prevent this situation from occuring. If your child has or may have measles or chicken pox, it is important that you:1. Do not send them to school2. Notify the School Principal as soon as possible.3. Take them to your GP or medical centre to confirm

diagnosis if possible.

WELLBEING REPORT

With half yearly exams well under way, many of our students find their stress levels on the increase. To help alleviate the symptoms of stress, students are encouraged to have an effective study timetable in place. Mindfulness techniques which focus on breathing and physical exercise have also been found to be very useful tools for stress reduction. The “Smiling Minds” App for example has quick daily mindfulness exercises that you can download onto a computer device for free. Alternatively, students can also come and talk to a teacher, mentor, Year Adviser, Learning and Support teacher, Head Teacher Wellbeing or the school counsellor for further advice and tips about reducing stress around this busy time of the year. At Tech, we have two school counsellors, Stephanie Lawson who is available Monday and Tuesday and Jay Dahl on Wednesday – Friday. On Tuesday 10 May all of our Year 11 students participated in the Driver Education program ‘NRMA U-Turn The Wheel’ where they heard from a range of guest presenters (NSW Police, Ambulance, NRMA Road Services, Trent Driving School and St George Youth Services) about the most pertinent issues around driving and safe use of our roads. The course has always been well received by our students who interact well with the presenters and go away with a fresh outlook on their driving and safety. Special thanks to Cronulla Rotary for their assistance with organising the presenters and subsidising the cost of the event.I was fortunate enough to go away with Year 11 on their last school camp and a great time was had by all thanks to the organisation of Ellen Campbell (Year 11 Adviser). During the day the students were able to participate in a range of physical and challenging activities that promoted team building, cooperation and encouragement among the students. At night the students heard from Dr Prue Salter on study skills and were entertained by the hypnotist, Matt Hale. The behaviour of our students was excellent and made it that much easier for the instructors and supervising teachers who were on camp.Dr Prue Salter from Enhanced Learning Educational Services ran the study skills session with Year 11 on the first night of camp. The session focused on helping students identify changes and improvements they could make to their approach to their studies in order to maximise their results in their final years of school. The main areas covered with Year 11 were moving into a senior mindset, setting up an effective home study environment, managing resources for school (both paper and digital), working effectively at home and dealing with distractions, managing workload and planning for assessments, using the diary as a planning tool, making brain-friendly study notes and using a wide variety of active study techniques to suit individual learning styles. Parents are encouraged to review the handout from the session with students and discuss the main areas identified where changes need to be made. Parents can also find extra study skills tips on the following website: http://studyskillstoptipsparents.com/All secondary students and parents at our school also have access to a great study skills website to help students develop their skills. Go to www.studyskillshandbook.com.au where there are lots of useful

handouts on the THINGS TO PRINT page on this site and students can work through the units where they need additional help.During assembly on Friday 26 May all of Year 12 were given the opportunity to hear the Black Dog Institute’s ‘INSIGHT’ presentation which consisted of a 30 minute presentation on adolescent mental health. We were fortunate enough to hear from three guest presenters, all of whom had very different personal life stories of courage and hope in dealing with teenage mental health illness. Each story was emotionally inspiring and had a very powerful message behind it. At the conclusion of the talk, Year 12 students were able to recognise the symptoms and early warning signs of different types of mental illnesses and where to access help and support services. For further information and fact sheets please check out Black Dog’s website at: https://www.blackdoginstitute.org.au/about-us/publications-and-resources/fact-sheetsThe school has also been selected as one of three pilot schools in Sydney to up-skill ten of its staff members in Mental Health First Aid training on Monday 5 June and Tuesday 6 June 2017 which has previously been only available to health professionals and counsellors in Australia since 2000. The program runs for two days and will

eventually be offered to all schools in 2018. Based on the successful conventional first aid model of DRSABCD, the Mental Health First Aid Training program aims to improve the level of mental health literacy in our school community. In the last week of term, up to 15 Year 8 and Year 9 students from our school will have an opportunity to take part in a community based initiative with Advance Diversity services at Kogarah Intensive English Centre by working with newly arrived youth, sharing experiences on transitioning into a new life in Australia. Tech students will have an opportunity to put into action some of their High Resolve workshop skills learnt from the High Resolves Program offered to our students in Year 8 each year. The selected group of students will talk about the type of subjects available in our school system, extra curricula activities, social connections, how to prepare for exams and school life in general. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our P&C for funding the High Resolves program in 2017 after the Bayside City Council Community Grant we initially applied for at the start of the year was unsuccessful. Top 5 Study Skills HabitsWant to develop great habits for learning? Here’s what you need to do:

1. ENGAGE: Don’t just be a bystander, instead be an active participant in your own learning, taking responsibility for what you need to do to achieve your academic best.

This means:

You involve yourself in all of your lessons, staying on task, participating in discussions and trying to absorb as much as you can during your classes (and that means less to learn later).

You complete all of the set work for your subjects (your teacher gives you this for a reason) and you try and keep up to date in this work.

You seek help on anything you don’t understand or can’t do. This might be from a teacher, a friend, online sources, additional books or study guides. You also do this nice and early, you don’t let the problems pile up.

2. ORGANISE: Being organised means that you can find things when you need them, you don’t forget about work to be done and you don’t have last minute panics. Much less stressful.

This means:

You have a good system for managing all of the paper for school, you file away completed work and sort and organise all of the papers you are given.

You do the same with your digital resources: well named folders and logical filing structures. You do a back-up on a regular basis.

When you are given an assessment task you make a plan for when you will do the work for this task and you adjust the plan along the way as things change.

3. THINK AHEAD: Part of ‘stepping up’ is that you don’t just wait for someone to tell you to do something. You think ahead and work strategically.

This means:

If you know there will be exams (and there are always exams) then don’t wait until exam time to get your act together. Make your study notes as you go. Every time you finish a topic make study notes for that topic and file it away at home.

Make your study notes as you go. Don’t fall too far behind. Yes I know I have already said this, but it is so important I am saying it twice. Keep improving and condensing your notes throughout the year.

In fact it needs to be said three times. Keep up to date in your study notes. Worst case scenario - catch up every school holidays.

Sydney Tech - an academically selective school for boys Page 17

4. STRIVE FOR EXCELLENCE: You want to be able to differentiate yourself from all of the other students, so think what you can do to make your work stand out from the crowd.

This means:

You take the time to be thorough when working on essays and assignments. This means lots of planning and brainstorming to start and then multiple drafts over a period of time for editing and proofing (it’s good to give the subconscious time to process and evaluate between drafts).

You look for additional source material, you read widely and you do more than what is asked of you. But you ensure that in specific tasks you are focused on answering the question and providing depth to your response.

You make the most of any feedback you are given (either along the way or after the task) to make adjustments to your approach to your work to improve your outcomes.

5. STUDY SMART: Many students are incredibly ineffective in the way they study. They just stare into their books hoping what they need to learn will magically jump into their heads. If you aren’t doing it yet, then it is time to study smart.

This means:

You test yourself over and over on the material you need to be able to recall in exams. You don’t just read it and hope you will be able to remember it.

You then check for understanding, are you able to apply the information you have in your head to different types of questions? To do this you do as many practice questions and past examination papers as you can. You get hold of as many different questions as possible to do as practise.

You do these past papers under examination conditions! This means that you stick to the time limits and don’t look at notes or answers until the end. This gives you a reality check about your performance and helps you rehearse for the time pressure of exams. You use these practise papers as a tool to help you pinpoint areas of weakness that you then address.

The first few weeks of Term 3 have been very busy for Year 11 with their assessments followed by the U-Turn the Wheel and Year 11 camp.

U-TURN THE WHEELThe driver education program, U-Turn the Wheel, exposed students to the responsibilities of becoming a driver. Students viewed presentations about the dangerous consequences of speeding, using mobile phones while driving, and other unlawful driving behaviour. We hope that students will heed the graphic warnings and good advice, remaining always on the right side of the law and safety.

CAMPFrom the point of view of staff members who attended the Year 11 camp, the students impressed with their excellent conduct. The outdoor activities provided students with the experience of pushing themselves beyond their limits, working in teams, trusting each other and solving problems. In the organised activities, students also got wet, cold, tired, sore and uncomfortable but showed their running prowess when they were called to line up for second servings at meal times. It was great to see the high levels of cooperation between students who were not used to working together to achieve their goals. The first night of the camp had a serious tone as students learned about how to achieve their HSC goals. Prue Salter, director of Enhanced Learning Educational Services, gave a detailed presentation to the students about how to study effectively. The message for students is that knowledge will not go into students’ long-term memory without consistent, considerable effort to take notes, memorise and understand the course content. Prue Salter pointed out that some of the students might not know how hard their peers are working: students who achieve A-grades without seeming to make an effort are actually like the proverbial swan who glides along gracefully across the surface of the water but their feet are paddling furiously beneath the surface. It is impossible to achieve excellence without effort. The second night of camp was pure entertainment by the famous comedy hypnotist, Matt Hale. His message was that students could use the power of their minds to relax: visualisation is a powerful tool that students can use to help them to attain a state of relaxation that will ease stress and clarify thinking. Congratulations to the students who worked hard in the lead-up to the first major Year 11 assessment period and achieved the results to which they aspired. For those students whose results fell short of their hopes, there is time to implement the sound advice from Prue Salter: access the website, www.studyskillshandbook.com.au using the username and password which was provided to parents via text message. There you will find all the practical guidance you require to help you to improve your results and gain success throughout your HSC journey. Ellen CampbellYear Adviser

Gonski 2.0 Must Not Renege on Gonski 1.0

P&C Federation is encouraged that the ongoing campaign for the Federal Government to honour their Gonski needs-based funding model is having an effect. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Education Minister Simon Birmingham announced recently that they accept the principles outlined in the 2011 Gonski report and have pledged that the Federal Government contribution to government schools will increase from 17% now to 20% of the schooling resource standard by 2020. They also announced David Gonski will lead another review into education funding to be completed by the end of this year, dubbed “Gonski 2.0” by Mr Turnbull. However, any Gonski 2.0 agreement must only apply after Gonski 1.0 has run its course. “We are adamant that the Federal Government must not renege on the funding promised under the Gonski agreement signed in 2013”, commented P&C Federation President Susie Boyd. “That agreement was signed in good faith and guaranteed funding up to the year 2019, and we have no intention of letting the Turnbull Government off the hook.” The last two years of the 2013 agreement are crucial, as these are the years when most Federal funding is due to be provided. It would make no sense to upend this agreement before its full effect has been assessed. “A deal is a deal”, Ms Boyd stated. “Presumably, the Federal Government would not appreciate an agreement it entered into to be changed before the main benefits come into effect, and there is no reason for the New South Wales Government to agree to that either.”

Ms Boyd added “New funding arrangements for after 2019 would always have to be agreed upon, so in that sense we are not against a Gonski 2.0 agreement. But we are concerned that what was recently announced will be used by the Federal Government to get out of its current commitments, which will impact on over 700,000 students in our state’s public schools. “What we want is that the Federal Government commits to an equitable education funding and allows it to run its full course.”

“We expect that any further review by David Gonski would regard funding models to be enacted only after current funding agreements are completed. We will maintain pressure on the Federal Government to ensure this is the case.”

Time for Parents to Say: Stick to Full Gonski

P&C Federation is highly disappointed at the Commonwealth government’s decision to upend the Gonski agreement signed in 2013 in full. P&C Federation is urging parents to write to their local MP and pressure the Federal Government to not renege on its 2013 commitments. P&C Federation President Susie Boyd commented, “How does the government want us to believe that the new funding model will be beneficial for students and schools when according to data from the NSW Department of Education, NSW schools stand to lose $846 million of Gonski 1.0 funding in the years 2018-2019. Under the Gonski 2.0 it is confusing how Mr. Turnbull claims to offer a brighter future for our kids by denying the majority of funding promised in the 2013 deal due to be released in 2018 and 2019. “Changing the foundation of the funding, prior to the delivery of the bulk of the funding being released, is like moving the finishing line another 10km, during a marathon race”. To take just a few Gonski success stories out of many, the number of graduating students at Merrylands High School more than doubled between 2011 and 2014. At Canley Vale High School, from 2010 to 2015, the percentage of students eligible for university entry has risen from 82% to 92% these are real achievements being delivered with Gonski 1.0. Ms Boyd stated “What deeply concerns me is that our Education Minister Simon Birmingham admitted this month that there is no guarantee schools will reach the Schooling Resource Standard under the Turnbull Government’s new funding model. “Mr. Turnbull needs to understand that the schools require the full six years of funding to be able to reach the minimum Schooling Resource Standard as recommended under the Gonski agreement,” Ms. Boyd added. Statistics reveal that “Where schools will receive an extra $18.6 billion by 2027 under ’Gonski 2.0’, this is $22.3 billion less than Gonski 1.0 which was agreed with between the Federal and States and Territories”. Ms. Boyd added. "We are backing our Premier and our Education Minister, who are supporting our state by insisting that the Federal Government honour the full agreement signed in 2013.” “The political expediency will only disadvantage our children and it is appalling that the government is knowingly underfunding education of a generation of students. It’s not as if the Government is lacking funds. Some figures suggest that Federal bureaucrats cost up to $58 billion a year. Reducing only that by just 2% could provide funding for Gonski.” Data from the Federal Government’s documents show that Australian schools will be $22.3 billion worse off over 10 years than they would be if the Gonski 1.0 agreement were honoured in full, as reported in the NSW Teachers Federation media release. “We have no intention of letting the Turnbull Government off the hook and we are adamant that what was promised in 2013 under the Gonski 1.0 agreement must be honoured in full. We firmly support our state government in insisting that the deal signed in good faith in 2013 is honoured.” Sydney, NSW, 12 May 2017 Media Contact: President Susie Boyd 0418 163 665 [email protected]

BUILDING FUNDTech High, established in 1911, was originally located in a building in Mary Ann Street, Ultimo, and known as Ultimo Central Technical School. The Official Opening of the new school buildings on McConnachies Paddock, Forest Road, was performed on 2 August 1958. Our school buildings are always in need of upgrading and renovation. The priority areas for our Building Fund in 2016 are to upgrade toilets. Currently our bathrooms do not meet environmental standards, waste water and electricity. Your contribution to the fund will enhance student and staff well-being and contribute to an improved school environment. There are various amounts you can donate or you can suggest your own amount. All donations over $2 are tax deductible.

LIBRARY FUNDThe school has established a school Library fund. This fund is designed to enhance student learning and improve access to up to date resources from a range of different media.
