Syracuse University Enactus is dedicated to developing community and global outreach programs. With the mission, “A head for business, a heart for the world,” we strive to make the world a better place. We create and

manage multiple projects that meet economic, environmental, and social sustainability on our campus, in our community, and abroad. Team Guatemala is one of our legacy projects.

Mayan women have practiced the ancient art of back strap weaving for five thousand years, and it has become an integral part of their daily lives. Nearly one million weavers in Guatemala, although often skilled and entrepreneurial, lack the formal education necessary to run their own businesses. This has resulted in the weavers selling their products for less than they cost to make which contributes to the cycle of poverty.

SU Enactus has opened and expanded the college market for Mayan weavers, as it has been able to continuously drive sales by developing and improving product offering. The weavers make a variety of products including: luggage tags, laptop cases, key chain holders, coin purses, picture frames and more.

Since 2007, we have not only raised the women’s income, but we have benn able to fund over 25o scholarships for their young girls to go to school by sending 90% of the proceeds back to Guatemala. Thanks to our team’s efforts, our total now stands at $125,000.
