A Message From The Team…We would all like to wish you a happy and healthy Christmas and holiday period. During this time, some people will have their families around them and some may not - we can all be mindful of this and look out for those that may be on their own and maybe pay them a visit.

Speaking of visits, we received some lovely gifts from some lovely people who made our day. The cake was delicious, sweet peas brightened up our meeting room and the chocolates are disappearing fast! We very much appreciated being appreciated.

Enjoy your Christmas everyone and we’ll see you in the New Year!

Your Mamaku Blue Tour includes being met on arrival by our friendly staff before you are escorted to our naturally “air conditioned” people carrier that will whisk you off into the orchard. Spend time discovering the story behind Mamaku Blue and learn the steps involved in getting the blueberry from the bush to the market.

From the orchard you will visit the sorting and packaging shed, where you will learn the intricacies of the export berry market and some of the steps that make Mamaku Blue berries so special. You will then proceed on through to the wine-making department, have a chat to the wine maker and learn about blueberry wines.

From there it is back on to the people carrier to be delivered to the specialised blueberry retail shop and café, where you can taste a range of blueberry products including our wines and liqueurs. You may like to make a purchase of blueberry products and enjoy one of the chef’s delicacies such as a hot blueberry pie or muffin with your choice of Dilmah tea or freshly brewed coffee.

If time permits arrange to stay for lunch or dinner (bookings essential). Our function room caters for large groups.

You may also like to browse through Mamaku memorabilia in our museum.

Our basic orchard/winery and tastings tour takes approximately 60 minutes, but be sure to allow additional time to enjoy the tastings and other treats available. Additional to our orchard and winery tours, the Mamaku Blue property has native bush walks and farm tours. A range of catering options is available for your morning/afternoon teas, lunches or dinners.

In conjunction with Mamaku Blue tours we also have available a selection of other interesting attractions in the district that can be visited to make a full and relaxed day of discovery. We are happy to help you plan a special day out to fit in with your itinerary.

Fraser Street Poem

Fraser Street is the placeWhere each Friday I show

my faceAlthough I am (very) old

I do as I am toldThe boss is called Chiefy

All fluffy and leafyShe is made of good stuffBut she sure can be tough

Down the backIs a place for Pat

She has people to matchThen makes

friendships hatchThere is a little fella

called JoAnd as we know

She spends the day in front of a screen

Behind the desk she can hardly be seen

We have some laughs to keep us sane

Another joke and we are laughing again

As a team we are dynamic and bold

And our focus is always on, “The Old”

Do not ‘unsubscribe’ from emails!Spam email today is sent through elaborate computer programs that in many cases even try to guess peoples email addresses. It matters not if it gets one in 10,000 correct.

If you click ‘unsubscribe’ on unsolicited spam email, you do the spammer a favour by confirming that your email is in actual fact a valid one. You will promptly find that the pesky incoming emails have increased 20-fold and then more some.

The Home Maintenance and Safety programme aims to help older people stay in their own homes longer by keeping on top of house maintenance and repairs. Often this work is put off because it feels like it is too hard or could cost too much.

There is an online checklist for inside and outside the house, which gives information on priority and who might do the repairs. You can download this tool from Age Concern’s website: www.ageconcerntauranga.org.nz A printed copy is available from our office at a small cost.

If you would prefer to have your home assessed by a professional company, Age Concern will refer you to Total Home Inspection Services, who have agreed to do the inspection for us at an agreed price. They will provide a report with photographs and give an indication of priority work. Age Concern will provide follow up assistance.

Give us a call if you would like more information on 578 2631.

Beware of Scammers!!Hi, my name is Dirk and I run my own little computer repair business that covers from Omokoroa to Papamoa. I service my customers computers at their homes. I’m also very patient for those that aren’t very tech savvy as I know we were all there at one point! The people who I’m not patient with are the scammers that are plaguing people through phone calls and online. You have probably had a call from a “Microsoft” technician stating that your computer is faulty or full of viruses and the best option is obviously to hang up on them. Unfortunately they are now calling people saying they are from Spark or Trustpower so if you are unsure, hang up immediately and call Spark or Trustpower directly to see what the issue is. If you have a screen pop-up on your computer stating you have a virus and to call a number shut down your computer either through the Start Menu or holding down the power button for 20 seconds. It’s not the best way to shut down a PC but it’s certainly better than getting infected. I hope that helps some people.

Moving into Residential CareResidential care is the care provided in a rest home, private hospital or dementia facility. These facilities have a contract with the District Health Board and require you to have both a needs assessment and a level of care assessment before entering long term care. Residential care can seem overwhelming, complex, with use of terms like admission agreement, enduring power of attorney, maximum contribution, top up subsidy and premium room fees. Before considering residential care, you should have a Needs Assessment. This ensures that: 1. You know of support services that would help you to remain in your own home e.g. district nurses, home care. 2. You have access to rehabilitation and/or specialist medical advice which may improve your health. 3. You have help with making the critical decision. It is difficult to return home once you have moved into care. 4. You know the costs of residential care and the assessment criteria for public funding. A Needs Assessor will visit you at home or in hospital and talk with you about: * Tasks you find difficult. * Family/whanau or social support available to you. * Services that could help you stay at home. * Whether you meet the criteria for long term care.

There are four types of care:Rest Home, Dementia Rest Home, Private Hospital and Specialist Private Hospital. All facilities must be certified by Ministry of Health and have a contract with the local District Health Board. Viewing the FacilityMaking an appointment to view a facility ensures the manager is free to talk with you, or you may prefer to arrive unannounced. It is best to avoid first thing in the mornings and mealtimes, as these are the busiest times for staff. Ask Questions About: Meals * Ask the residents about the food. * What times are the meals - when is the main meal? * Are the meals cooked on site or delivered? * Are special/culturally appropriate diets available? Care * How are family/whanau involved in writing the Care Plan and reviews? * What is the ratio of staff to residents?* For rest homes, how many hours per week is a registered nurse on duty, and when? * Which doctor visits, how often, and is there a choice? * Can you have a shower every day? Facilities * Can you bring your own furniture? * Can people enter your room without permission?* Is there an ensuite? Ensuite usually means your own private toilet. A communal shower is often acceptable, as most

residents need help. * Would you prefer a small or a large facility? * How many lounges are there? Is there a choice? * Is there a pleasant, sheltered outdoor area to sit? * Can residents smoke/drink alcohol? * Can you take your pet with you? Other Services * Does a hairdresser/podiatrist call?* Is transport available for appointments and activities? * Is there a free private phone for resident use? * How many hours per week does the activities person work? * Are outings arranged and how often can each resident go? * Is there extra cost for outings or activities?Other Things To Think About* Ask to take the Admission Agreement away with you to study.* Ask about your Care Plan.* Premium Room Fees* Residential Care Subsidy - Income and Asset Testing* Trusts* Gifting* Residential Care Loan* Services and who pays* What help there is for partners still at home* Enduring Power of Attorney (or EPA)Additional Costs -* Do you have to pay more than maximum contribution? * Are there premium room fees? If so, what for? * Do you need to provide a guarantor for payment?

FOR ALL YOUR PRINTING NEEDS

Legacy TrustMore than 400 community organisations have received grants since Legacy Trust was established.

The latest list of recipients includes many that benefit/include the elderly, for example Parkinsons NZ BOP, Alzheimers Tauranga, Waipuna Hospice, Grief Support Services, BOP Multiple Sclerosis Society, Holy Trinity Church (carols on the waterfront), and Omokoroa Prem Knitters Group.

The organisations that benefit are not only many, they are varied. Others to receive grants recently include Omanu Beach Surf Lifesaving, Parafed BOP, BOP Blind Sports Club, Cool Bananas Youth Work Trust… and many more.

All this gifting is only possible thanks to people choosing to use Legacy Funerals at their time of need - with profits going straight back to the community via Legacy Trust grants. To date more than $2.6 million has been gifted.

Coffee and Conversation The Te Puke group met again at the Te Puke Citizens and RSA Club on the 7th November and it was good to see familiar faces as well as a couple of new ones. Hanny Naus from Age Concern NZ in Wellington also attended our meeting to talk with participants to see how the meetings fit in with engaging and supporting social connections for the older person.

Thanks to Alma Callender, Judith Hyatt and Jan Vincent for volunteering to organise future meetings. Age Concern is dependent on local community support to provide services and activities in the community. The next Te Puke meeting will be on Tuesday 13th February 2018.

The last meeting of the year was also held for the Tauranga group on 16th November at the Tauranga RSA. Interesting discussions

Te Puke group volunteers - Judith, Alma and Jan

Dennis, Kim, Nancy and Darryl – who gets the last slice of cake?

were generated from a variety of questions posed such as - What do you do to keep your spirits up in difficult times? If you could travel to anywhere in the world, where would you go? Should marijuana be decriminalised? The general opinion was that medical marijuana should be legalised but marijuana for social recreational use should not as there are already too many social issues created by the misuse of legal drugs, including alcohol.

The meeting concluded with the sharing of donated gifts from Santa’s secret box. Big thank you to Roland Edwards, Margaret Berry, Sharon Blaikie, Dianna Harrison, Diana Fiford and Nicola Milham for your assistance and support throughout the year and making the meetings run smoothly.

The Tauranga meetings will recommence in February 2018 - keep an eye out for the February newsletter ‘What’s On’ section.

COMMUNICATION AUTHENTICITY CONNECTIVITY

Small but exceptional, we do things a little dierent. Our focus is on building strong and enduring relationships.

All Tauranga City Library branches (Tauranga, Papamoa, Greerton, Mount Maunganui) are drop-off points this December for the Tauranga Foodbank food appeal and the ‘Make a Child Smile’ toy appeal. All donations are gratefully received and will go to a good home.

Come in to Tauranga or Papamoa Library this December and you can borrow a mystery parcel of assorted books. This is a fun way to expand your reading horizons over summer and you may be rewarded with a treat or two.

We are running a fun and free Adult Reading Programme over summer and all entrants will go into the draw to win a Samsung Galaxy! Simply visit your local library anytime this summer and pick up an Adult Reading bookmark - all entry details are included on the bookmarks as well as a list of adventurous reading activities for you to complete.

The Tauranga Library carpark should be reopened by mid-December which will be a relief for many of our customers. Tauranga City Libraries would like to thank you for your patience and wish you a very merry Christmas.

Library Corner Enduring or just ordinary Powers of Attorney? We recently acted for an elderly couple who were new to our firm and purchasing a unit in a retirement village. We discussed the requirements of entry to the village, one of which was for each resident to have valid Enduring Powers of Attorney in place.

Our clients brushed off this requirement as they had “powers of attorney” in place and had done from when they travelled overseas a few years back. Great. We asked them to send through copies for us to hold on file.

Long story short, our clients had confused a Deed of Delegation and Power of Attorney, which they put in place when they last holidayed overseas to allow their daughter to handle their affairs while they were out of New Zealand, for Enduring Powers of Attorney.

Beware, there is a difference. A well thought out Enduring Power of Attorney provides you with peace of mind that you have decided ahead of time who will make decisions for you when you can no longer make those decisions for yourself due to a lack of mental capacity. A (ordinary) Deed of Delegation and Power of Attorney on the other hand gives someone else the ability to act on your behalf while you are overseas or physically incapacitated. Don’t get caught short.

Contact Jacobsen + Co Lawyers on (07) 576 0016 if you are unsure what arrangements you have in place to look after you and your property in the future.

Christmas Platter IdeaArrange your favourite bite sized treats into the shape of a Christmas tree.Whether it’s cheese, deli bites, mini carrot sticks, snow peas, cucumber, grapes, crackers, broccoli florets, tomatoes or strawberries - the list is endless! And you can decorate it with sprigs of herbs or whatever takes your fancy. Time to get creative.
