com·mu·ni·ty (/kəˈmyo͞onədē/)- a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.

We are all part of the community called Oakwood Country Club. Think about it. We play golf together; we hang out at the pool together with our kids; we eat and drink together in the golf Bar; We host our family and social events in the dining room. We share our experiences, both good and bad with each other. That’s one of the most important aspects of community – Communication.

Communication is not something that just exists at the level of members of Oakwood, but also at the level of the Board. Unfortunately, there has been a lack of communication between the two groups. Both groups have a sense of what they want Oakwood to be, but the communication of those values has until recently been limited. As president of the Board, I accept a great deal of responsibility for this. Over this past year, your Board has had to deal with some difficult issues relating to the aging of our facilities, but most importantly, the effect that declining membership has had on delivering the kind of country club ex-perience you, as a member, should expect. The Board has placed tremendous pressure on the manage-ment team to deliver this experience within a tighter budget, and I commend them for the work that they have done. Never the less there still remains dissatisfaction on the part of some members.

If you remember, last month I introduced the concept of the suggestion boxes. Throughout the clubhouse, there are locked suggestion boxes which allow you, the member, to give feedback to us, the Board and management, on how we are doing. How was your service in the golf bar? How did the course play? Do you have an idea that would enhance the enjoyment of the club for other members? We welcome all con-structive comments and ideas. The comments are all held in the strictest of confidence, and only Board members have access to the boxes. We have a dynamic committee system which will address these in the context of the budget. But, here’s a request - because, these are held in the strictest of confidence, we ask that you put your name on your comments. That way, we can have a committee chair, or myself, reach out to you to let you know you have been heard. Later in this newsletter, there is a summary of the comments received to this point and the responses to them. Sadly, my last comment on this is that we can only ac-complish those things that fit into our budget. Our operation, as you surely understand, is based on the number of members we have and the dues that they pay. The lifeblood of our club is our membership. So, I am asking you, if you believe in the vision of what Oakwood can be, invite your friends, business associ-ates, neighbors to experience what Oakwood is, but more significantly, what Oakwood can become.

Finally, I want to extend a big Welcome and shout out to our new Chef, Chef Dan, and his team. Those of you that attended the Meet the Chef night were wowed by what he and his team have created. That was a part of the vision of what Oakwood can become with the positive support of its members.

Oakwood… It’s where you belong!

John Golden

Greetings,

The staff and I are looking forward to a beautiful Fall golf season at Oakwood as well as switching gears and focusing on the inside fun at Oakwood. A few of the highlights for the Fall:

That is 10 events over 60 days. Now that’s what I call fun and something for everyone. Go Team!

I am very proud of the Oakwood management staff and employees for their exceptional performance this past season. Through hard work and dedication they were able to entertain the members and guests of Oakwood at a reasonable cost. Below I have listed some, but not all, of their successes.

Golf Operations

Junior Golf Lessons on Thursdays and spread throughout the summer. This provided for greater participation and the opportunity for parents to be involved with their children.

The introduction of several new outside events helped off-set the lousy Spring weather.

Both Ladies and Men’s Member Guests showcased all that Oakwood has to offer.

Nick Wadsager and the operations staff did a remarkable job delighting members and guests.

QC Amateur Championship

Golf Course

The condition of the course was superb year round. I cannot recall a year when we received more positive com-ments from guests.

Hole 18 grew in very nicely as well as the turf around the traps.

The overall maintenance of the course considering a substantial decrease in the labor budget was outstanding.

Clubhouse/Entertainment

70 events including weddings, golf outings, graduations, showers, pool parties etc.. while operating normal dining and pool operations along with 24 Club sponsored member events.

The hiring process of our new Chef, Dan Wilda, while maintaining food & beverage operations in the absence of a Chef on staff.

Administration

Exceptional communication to members of events and important announcements through various outlets includ-ing Constant Contact, Facebook, Tattler, and electronic display. The introduction of on-line bill paying.

As always, if there is anything that we can do for you please do not hesitate to let me know.

See you around the Club,

Mark

LADIES ORGANIZATION

The 2019 golf season has come to an end! However, "Fall Golf" has arrived!

There should be plenty of warm days to come out and enjoy the beauty

Oakwood has to offer..

The 50th Illinois State Senior Women's Amateur Golf Championship was held

in Bollingbrook, Illinois September 10-12, 2019. Representing Oakwood Coun-

try Club was Joyce Aller and Rose Barnet. Joyce Aller faced some fierce

competition and made a great showing in her 30 year career at the Senior's.

Rose Barnet brought home the first place net trophy in her age division. We

can't forget Rose is a past champion! Congratulations ladies we are very

proud of you both. The IWGA celebrated 50 years of Senior Amateur compe-

tition during a very special banquet during the week at Bollingbook. A musi-

cal video was made showing 50 years of champs, friends, players and work-

ers at the Senior's. Oakwood's support of the IWGA and it's many programs is

greatly appreciated!

SAVE THE DATE of Saturday November 2nd for the Fall Fashion Show. A very

special event that has been a wonderful way to showcase our beautiful

club! Bring your friends for a fun day with a delicious lunch, fashion show,

door prizes and shopping!! Get your reservations in quickly! It's usually a full

house!

CARDS ON THURSDAYS! If you are interested in playing cards, contact Jane

Gavin. This bridge group is always looking for players. If the weather doesn't

permit a round of golf, the ladies usually play (Euchre) and if you are interest-

ed please be at the club by 11:00 a.m. A great way to keep in touch with

friends! Don't forget to have some lunch as well.

"TIME SPENT WITH FRIENDS AT OAKWOOD IS TIME WELL SPENT"!

SUGGESTION BOXES

Recently Suggestion Boxes were installed at the Club. They are located in the Main Entrance to the Golf Bar,

Ladies’ Locker Room, Men’s Locker Room, in the hallway outside the Pro Shop, and will also be installed at

the Pool. The purpose of the Suggestion Boxes are to get Suggestions/Comments/Questions from our mem-

bers. The Board of Directors want to hear from you, the Members or Staff, if you have any issues. The

attached process we follow is stated on the Boxes for your review. It is as follows:

In order to provide the exceptional experience you deserve, we welcome your comments and/or sugges-

tions.

Please write legibly on the paper form provided and sign your name.

All comments/suggestions are kept Confidential

The Board has designated one of the board members to check the boxes weekly. All suggestions/

comments are then tracked and shared with the Board Members and will be discussed with the ap-

propriate area of the club and responses made directly to the Club/Staff Member in a timely matter.

During the period of August 12, 2019 thru September 12, 2019, suggestions totaled fifteen. All of these sug-

gestions were anonymous. Therefore, the Board will be unable to directly share information. That being the

case, we will recap the suggestions below:

Pool - there were six suggestions and two comments. Suggestions were about keeping the pool open

after Labor Day and to provide more food options including snacks. The Clubhouse Committee are

discussing and working with management on these issues. Also, two comments were made that the

pool staff are very respectful and hardworking. Also, keep up the good work as “Oakwood is tops.”

Pro Shop - there were two suggestions. One is about hiring more bag workers as we still have a lot of

golf yet to play. The other suggestions is that chairs, benches, and garbage cans, be provided at the

Driving Range. Pool tables and a lounge would also be great. Discussion is taking place with Pro

Shop/ Mark.

Golf Course - there were two suggestions. One is about trimming the tree in front of the red tee box on

Hole 4 and the other about removing trees on the 18th fairway and moving the fairway trap. The

Golf/Sports Committee will be in discussion with the Superintendent, Troy.

Office - one suggestion to cash member checks more often. Discussed with Mark.

Golf Bar - one suggestions to not run out of N/A beer. Discussed with Kyle.

Food – one suggestion to add more Appetizers to the menu. Discussed with Mark and Kyle. One Com-

ment was made that the food is phenomenal, Go Oakwood.

The Board of Directors is glad to share this information with all the Members/Staff. We are working to pro-

vide the BEST experience we can for all of you. Thanks everyone.

Swinging on Plane

Swinging on plane is the best way to achieve consistent results in your full swing.

If you are someone who doesn’t swing on plane, you are required to make adjustments

in the transition and downswing to compensate for poor positioning earlier in your

swing. The best way to develop an on plane golf swing, is to check your positioning at

different points in the swing. You can use video or a mirror to check your positions

throughout the swing, and develop a more on plane swing.

Use these 10 checkpoints to swing more on plane
