SUNDAY SCHOOL

Sunday School begins on August 27. Look for more information about class

offerings for adults coming soon. We are planning a fun and enriching year.

We are delighted that Cannon Hunt will begin doing music with the children

each week. They will then be divided into two groups to experience hearing a

sacred story, art response, and a game or activity. We look forward to seeing

all of our children together again!

August Birthdays

Rally Day 2017

Please join us on Sunday, August 20, as we “rally” together as one

parish! Our theme this year is ONE MISSION - MANY GIFTS. You are

invited to a 10:00 a.m. service, which will include a Children’s Homily

and Children’s Chapel, as well as Blessing of the Backpacks, followed

by a lunch in the Bracewell Room. You will hear about the many

active ministries at St. Peter’s and how you can share your special

gifts. You will also hear about what is coming up for adults, children,

and youth for Sunday school. The children will be allowed to visit

their Sunday school rooms and hang out while the parents check out

the ministry sign-up sheets. Hope to see everyone there!

Smiling faces and warm fellowship

abounded on Sunday, July 16.

We are, fundamentally, an “us.” We are called together, to worship God together, to serve the world together. We all, of course, have our role to play in all of that, but not one of us is bigger than what God has called us to do and to be together. So let’s rejoice and be glad in that work at St. Peter’s. Let’s think carefully and pray faithfully about how God is calling us to worship Him, care for one another, and love our neighbors—not as isolated individuals, but together. We are in this together. Grace and Peace, Fr. Quinn+

A Note from the Rector

Dear Friends in Christ, I am writing this the day after the Chattanooga "walkabouts”—the best chance those of us in this part of our diocese had to get to know the candidates for Bishop of East Tennessee. I believe that no matter which of the candidates the Holy Spirit calls to be our next Bishop, we will be in good hands. They were all able to articulate a clear vision for our diocese, a sense of their own spirituality, and a genuine hopeful-ness about God's faithfulness in the midst of the challenges the church faces today. It will be exciting to get to know the person who will be called and chosen as bishop. It will be interesting to see the way that she or he will lead our diocese. But a new Bishop of East Tennessee will not fix every problem we have, save every struggling parish, and find the key to mak-ing money grow on every tree in the diocese. To do the good work God calls the Diocese of East Tennessee to do will require far more than one person's vision and work - it will take all of us engaging in mission in our local parishes and communities. This means there are no quick, easy answers that can be accomplished by any given individual, even a Bishop. That sounds kind of negative, but I actually think that’s an incredibly hopeful statement. God doesn't tend to work first and foremost through individuals. Jesus is, of course, an exception to that rule. Beyond the saving work of Christ, God has normally seen fit to do the work of salvation through and in communities. Not through one all-star bishop or some other great leader, but through the messy and joyful work of the many. God works in relationships. God works in community. God works in and through an “us,” not a “me.” There aren’t a lot of places in our culture that are willing to rejoice in the fact that it’s not all about me. But in the life of the church, we do.
