IntroductionThisguideisprovidedasanaidintheinstallationofKlip-Rib®.ItshouldbeusedinconjunctionwiththenotesandrecommendeddetailsincludedintheKIipRib®loadtablesandtheContractDocuments,whereapplicable.

InstallationAEPSpan’s’Klip-Rib® shallbefastenedwithappro-priatescrewstosupportsaspermanufacturer’srec-ommendations(see page 6)orascalledforontheContractDocuments.Steelsupportsshouldbegal-vanizedorpainted.Sheetsshallhavesidelapsfacingawayfromtheprevailingweather. Sheetingshallprojectaminimumof11/2inchesintogutters.Themaximumprojectionintotheguttershouldallowaccessforcleaning. WheninstallingKlip-Rib®overpurlinsandblan-ketinsulation,themaximuminsulationthicknessis4inches.Themaximumrecommendedspanbetweensupportsis5’0”.Thisspanshouldbereducedinseverewindconditions(negativeload)orheavysnowloads(positiveload).ContactyourAEPSpan’represen-tativewithspecialconditions. Installationofpanelsidelapsealant(see Figure 1, page 5) isrecommendedforroofslopeslessthan2:12(minimumslope1:12)orprojectconditionswithpotentialicedammingorsnowloadsgreaterthan30psf. Flashingsaretobemadefromlikefinishorcompatiblematerialsasdesignated.High-sideflash-ingsshouldcoverthesheetsaminimumof4inches.Flashingattachmentsandcapsaretobemadewith
mechanicalfasteners.ProvidesealantatalltrimlapsandasshownintheKlip-Rib®FlashingsandDetailsGuideand/ortheContractDocuments.Roofs, flashings,andguttersshallbesweptcleanofalldebris(nails,screws,cuttings,filings,etc.)attheendofeachday’swork,andoncompletionofinstallation.Thejobshallbeleftcleanandinaweather-tightcondition.Allsheatingistobeinstalledbyexperiencedcraftsmen.
Note:DesignersshouldconsultAEPSpanregardingthelengthlimitationcausedbytransport,andpracticalconsiderationsifroofingpanelsexceed60feet.
Special Tools For Installing Klip-Rib®
SpecialtoolsarerequiredforthecorrectinstallationofKlip-Rib®.The turn-up/turn-down tool isusedfortwopurposes. The turn-up feature isusedforturningupthesheettraysundertheflashingatthehighendoftheroof.Thishelpspreventanymoisturefromdrainingintothebuildingwhichmightaccumulateundertheflashing.Theturn-upprocedurecanbedonebeforeinstallingthesheetsorafterthesheetshavebeenfas-tenedinplaceifpanelsareinstalledoverpurlins.Inthelattercase,aclearanceofapproximately3inchesisrequiredattheendofthesheetstoallowroomfortheturn-uptool. The turn-down feature isusedtoturndownthepanofthepanelattheloworgutterendoftheroof.Thisturn-downordripedgehelpspreventwaterfromrunningbackalongtheundersideofthesheetsandaddsadditionalstrengthtothepanelswhileeliminating“bowing”ofthetrays.Refertopage8forproperuseofthistool. A notching tool isusedforon-sitenotchingofflashingsperpendiculartotheribs.AftertheKIip-Rib® sheethasbeenfastenedandthesheetendsturnedup,theflashingshouldbeplacedincorrectpositionwhilenotching.Thelowerhandleofthenotchingtoolisplacedalongthetopoftheribwiththenotch-

inglugsontopoftherib.Thetophandleisthenraisedtoitsfull
extentandthejawofthetoolispushedontotheflatedgeoftheflashingasfarasitwillgo.Closingthehandleswillthennotchtheflashinginlinewiththesheetrib.Thisprocedureisrepeatedoneachribforthefulllengthoftheflashing.
Preparation Instructions for Klip-Rib® Installation1. Checkthatthetopflangesofallpurlinsorsupportsarelyinginplane.Accuratealignmentassuresefficientlockingofsheetsandclips.Misalignmentcaninterferewiththelockingaction,particularlywhereclipsarecloselyspaced.2. Tomaintainmaximumholdingpowerandavoidinterferencewhenattachingtheridges,clipsshouldbe8”-10”fromthetopendofthesheetandatleast3”fromthebottomend.Thehigh-sidetrimshouldbefastened8”oncenter.3. Makespotchecksforthealignmentofsheetsdur-ingerectiontocontrolcreeping.Torectifyalignments,sheetsmaybeadjusted1/8”bypullingtheclipawayorpushingittowardsthesheetwhilefasteningtheclip.4. Allpanelsmustbe“fixed”withfastenerstoresistdragloads.Thesefastenersaretypicallyinstalledthroughthepanelintothepurlinorsubstrateunderthetrimatthehighsideoftheroof.Refertothe“DragLoad”tablesfoundonpage25fortypeandquantityoffastenerssuitableforyourprojectconditions.5. Suitablesoft-soledworkshoesmustbewornwhenwalkingontheroofingsheets.Thesolesmustbeofatypethatwillnotpickupstonesandotherabrasivematerialsthatcoulddamagethesurfaceofthesheets.6. Itistheresponsibilityoftheinstallertotakepropersafetyprecautionsthatareincompliancewithstateandlocalguidelines.Specialattentiontosafetyshould
begiventoroofperimeterareasandinstallationoveropenframing.
Fastening MethodClipfastenersshallbeinstalledinthetwooutbound
clipholes.Whenfourfastenersarerequired,thetwoincrementalfastenersareinstalledininbound
holes(oneeachside).Forattachmentrecommenda-tionsinseverewindenvironments,contactyourAEPSpanrepresentative.See“24 ga Fastener Guide” on page 6forrecommendedfasteners.
Neoprene Closures: Neoprenebottomclosuresshouldbeplacedduringtheinstallationoftheroofpanelsatthebot-tomoftheslopeand shouldbesecuredinplacewiththeuseofgunnablegradesealantbetweentheflashingandtheneopreneclosure.Neoprenetopclo-suresshouldbeusedunderflashingsandontopoftheroofpanelstofillthevoidoftheroofpaneltrays.Thetopneopreneshouldbepositionedsuchthatthefasteners(spacedat8”centertocenter)attachingtheflashingtotheKlip-Rib®ribs,passthroughtheclo-suretosecureitinplace.Sealantshouldalsobeusedbetweentheclosure,roofpanel,andflashingtrim.

Sheet Laying ProceduresStep 1: WhenliftingKlip-Rib®sheetlengthsontotheroofframe,makesureallsheetshavethefemaleribfacingtowardsthesidewherefasteningistobegin.Attachthefirstrunofthefasteningclipsusingtheappropriatefasteningmethodandfasteners.Makesurethattheclipsareinlineandlocatedsothatthesheetswillbelaidcorrectlyinrelationtootherbuildingele-ments.NOTE:Liftingofpanelbundleswithlongpanellengthsmayrequireuseofa“spreaderbar”toavoiddamagetoroofpanels.
Step 2:Laythefirstsheetoverthefastenedrunofclipsbypositioningthecenterribfirst.Seatthecenterandfemaleribsontoallclipsbypressingdownthecenter
ribandthenthefemaleribovereachfasteningclipalongthefulllengthofthesheet.Whenpositioningthissheet,makesuretheoverhangateachendiscor-rect.Step 3: Thecliphasashortlegandalongleg.Positiontheshortlegofthefasteningclipoverthemaleribofthefastenedsheet.Thecliphasanotchinthelegthatgoesoverthemaleribofthepreviouspanel.Thecliphastobe“rocked”ontothemalelegtoengagethenotchontotheterminatingedgeofthemaleleg.
Usingtheappropriatefasteners,securethecliptothepurlinordecksub-
strate.Shouldtheclippositioncoincidewithamaleribspur,deformthespurwithablowfromarubbermalletsothattheclipwillseatcomfortablyovertherib.
Step 4: Placethesecondsheetoverthesecondrunoffasteningclips,againpositioningthecenterribfirst,andthenpushthefemaleribdownoverthemaleribofthefirstorprecedingsheet.Besurethattheendsofthesheetsareinline.
Step 5: Onshorterspans,thepanelmaybeclippedbyfirstwalkingalongthecenterribandthenthefemalerib.However,arubbermalletwillberequiredforlongerroof-ingspansandforwalls.Clipbothribsoverfasten-ingclipsatsupportsand,whilewalk-ingorpress-

ingonthepanelbeinglaid,strikeitsoverlappingribwithshort,sharpmalletblows.Repeatprocedureasrequiredbetweensupports.Fullinterlockingoftheribsisessentialandthefreeedgeofthemaleribmustengageontheshoulderofthefemalerib.Thisshouldbecheckedbystandingatmidspanclosebesidethemalelegoftheprevi-ouslylaidsheet.Ifitdisengages,snapwiththemallet.RepeatSteps3,4and5forsubsequentpanels.
Step 6: Ifthespaceleftbetweenthelastsheetandthefasciaislessthanhalfasheetwidth,itwillbecoveredbyfasciaflashing.Inthiscase,cutfasteningclipsintwousingtheshortleghalf,securethemaleribateachpurlin.Ifthespaceleftbetweenthelastsheetandtheedgeoftheroofismorethanhalfapanelwidth,thesheettobereplacedshouldbecuttothewidthrequiredandplacedasinSteps3,4and5.
Duringclean-up,makesuretherearenometalparticlesfromdrilling,filing,etc.,remainingontheroof.Cuttingsheetswithpowersawsontopofothersheetingshouldbeavoided. Roofs,flashings,andguttersshouldbesweptclearofalldebrisatleastattheendofeachworkdayanduponcompletionoftheinstallation.Corrosionandpossiblefailureofthezinc/aluminumcoatingmayoccurwhenleadorcopper-basedmaterialsareallowedtoremainincontactwithZincalume®surfacesundermoistconditions.

FailuretotakethisprecautionwillresultinunsightlystainingoftheZincalume®coatingasparticlesoxidizeduringexposure. Klip-Rib®roofingandsidingwillperformasspeci-fiedifinstalledinaccordancewiththerecommenda-tionssetforthinthisliterature.
Handling and StorageHandlingandstorageareimportanttotheperfor-manceoftheKlip-Rib®system.Bundlesmustbekeptdryintransitandstoredundercover,clearoftheground,topreventwaterand/orcondensationfrombeingtrappedbetweenadjacentsurfaces.Ifbundlesbecomewet,sheetsshouldbeseparated,wipedcleanwithacleanclothwithoutdelayandplacedsothataircirculationcancompletethedryingprocess.Theseproceduresarerecommendedtoavoidpossibledete-riorationofthecoatingwhichcouldleadtoreducedlifeexpectancyorpoorappearance.Strippable Coating: Avoidexposuretodirectsunlight.Removestrippablefilmaspanelsareinstalled.Touch-Up Painting: Applicationoftouch-uppainttodamagedpaintareasthatinvolveminorscratchesisnotrecommended.Panelsortrimthathaveseverepaintand/orsubstratedamageshouldbereplaced.Touch-uppaintingisnotrecommendedduetodif-ferentialfadeandweatheringcharacteristicsoffactoryandfield-appliedpaintsystems.

Valleys: Valleydimensionsmustbetheproperwidthtoaccountforslope,snow,iceandrainconditions.Valleysandeavesmayrequireaspecialunderlay-ment,astheyaresusceptibletowaterbuild-upandice-damming.Ificeorwaterbacksup,waterintrusionmayoccur.Anunderlaymentsuchasacold-appliedmembraneshouldbeputdownfirst,extending4’-0”upfromthecenterofthevalleyoneachsideandthesamedistanceupfromtheeave.The30lb.feltshouldthenoverlapthismembrane.
Closures: ClosuresontheridgeareheldinplacebythefastenersthatattachtheridgeflashingtotheKlip-Rib®panel.Closuresshouldbecaulkedtopandbottomwithgunnablesealantiftheslopeislessthan3:12.Allclosuresateaveandvalleyconditionsshouldbecaulkedtotheeaveorvalleyflashing,butnottothepanel.Expansionandcontractionistakenoutattheeave,however,thepanelneedstobeabletoslideovertheclosure.
Clips: TherearetwoclipsavailableforKipRib. AKL-65clipforuseoverpurlinsorsolidsubstrateandaKL-65modifiedclipforuseoverrigidinsulation.TheKL-65modi-fiedcliphaslargerrecessedholestopro-videextraclearenceforDekfastscrews.
Tools: Animportantstepinfinishingoffthedetails isintheuseofthetwotoolsdesignedspecificallyforKlip-Rib® . Notching tool:isusedtonotchflashingattheupperslopeendofthepanel.Thetoolproducesanotchinthe
flashingtrimallowingatabtobeplacedbetweentheribstocreateawindandweatherblock. Turn-up/Turn down tool:isusedto“turn-up”thepanelpansattheupperendofthepanel,beforethepanelsareinstalledtoformadamattheendofthepanelwhichguardsagainstwaterinfiltrationduetowind-drivenrain.Theturn-downfeatureisusedto“turndown”thepansatthelowerendofthepanelafterithasbeeninstalledminimizingtheproblemofwaterwickingbackunderneaththepanel.Seepage8forproperuseofthistool.
Application: Klip-Rib®issecuredtothesubstrateusingconcealedclipsanddoesnotactasadiaphragm.Analternativebracingordiaphragmsystemmustbeemployedtotransfertherequiredshearloads.Thepanelmustalsobepinnedattheridgetoresistthe‘drag’loadcausedbysnowloads,liveloads,thermalmovementandgravity.Theintensityofthedragisafunctionoftheslope,theloadsandthelengthofthesheet.Appendix“A”givesthedragloadsforvariousslopesandloadingconditionsAppendix“B”giveslateralresistancesfordifferentmaterialsandfastenertypes.Klip-Rib®canbeinstalledoverwood,steelframingorrigidinsulation.Wheninstalleddirectlyoverrigidinsulationintermittentsupportsarenotrequired.However,perimeterstructuralmembersareneededforpinningthepanelattheridgeandforsupportunderflashings.Itisnotrecommend-edthatKlip-Rib®beusedonslopesoflessthan1:12,especiallyinsnowareas.Keeproofpenetrationstoaminimum.
Allflatmetalsurfacescandisplaywavinesscommonlyreferredtoas“oilcanning”.Thisiscausedbysteelmilltolerancesandvariationsinthesubstrateandroofingunderlayments.Darkercolorswillaccentuateoilcan-ningmorethanlighter,moreneutralcolors.However,KlipRib®resistsoilcanningbetterthanmostpanelsduetoitsribspacingandtheminorribsinthepaneltrays.Oilcanningisaninherentcharacteristicofflatsteelproducts,notadefect,andthereforeisnotacauseforpanelrejection.
