5 Essentials for Effective Evaluation is a recent publication by CESE (Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation). It describes evaluation as a systematic and objective process used to make judgements about the merit or worth of

teaching practices in relation to their effectiveness, efficiency and appropriateness.

Evaluation at a school level is about understanding how individual children learn and what systems and teaching practices are most likely to make the biggest difference to helping all students achieve their potential.

The first part of the evaluation process commences with clear and measurable statements of objectives. The Ashfield Public School plan provides such statements in the form of three strategic directions: 1) Teaching, 2) Learning and 3) Systems & Relationships. These directions articulate the needs of the school and what it is endeavoring to achieve.

The second part of the evaluation process is to develop the activities that enable progress towards achieving the objectives. In the case of the school plan, each process and improvement measure tells how to achieve a particular direction.

They provide a clear line of sight between the input, what needs to be done, and the outcome or intended success.

The third part of the evaluation process is to formulate good evaluation questions that will provide the most robust answers upon which sound judgments can be made. For example, evaluating one of the school plan’s processes, Measurable Achievement,

involves asking if the small group learning interventions run by the school to target students not meeting minimum proficiency are positively impacting on student growth.

The fourth part of the evaluation process is to collect data from a baseline or a comparison group (preferably both). For example, the school’s Year 1 – 6 Accelerated Reader program involves identifying the reading level of all students at two or more time points. This data is used to make judgements about the worthwhileness of reading interventions and initiatives across the school.

The last part of the evaluation process is to be open-minded and have a clear plan for how to use the results. Evaluation should not be a tool for justifying a predetermined conclusion or course of action. Evaluation provides the facts (as best they can be estimated) to help make decisions about how to structure programs, whether they should be expanded, whether they need to be adjusted along the way, or whether they need to stop altogether.

An effective evaluation process provides evidence and understanding about how well Ashfield Public School is doing to achieve its vision of giving every child every opportunity within a culture of growth, performance and positive wellbeing. Evaluation shows the things to improve and develop, and the things to sustain and grow as we continue our journey of school excellence.

Welcome to Term 2. The Kindergarten children have already been super busy this term. In the first week back we went on our first walking excursion to Ashfield Park. There was much excitement and anticipation for the cross country and walkathon. Once at the park the year six buddies took the Kindergarten children by the hand and ran with them around the park. Every child participated with enthusiasm and can’t wait to get back there next year. Following the Cross Country the children walked the walk in the Walkathon. The walk back to school was not quite as quick but there was lots of counting practice, tallying their laps around the park. It’s all about athletics this term. Fit Futures are running a wonderful program of athletics skill development which all of the children are enjoying. The force was with us on the 4th of May with many children dressing up in their favourite Star Wars outfit. Our focus this term is on Public Speaking as part of our HSIE and Science and Technology units. All of the children have been researching and preparing information reports on various Australian animals. So far we have learnt lots of interesting facts we didn’t know before. Keep up the good work and we look forward to lots more fun and learning ahead.

Welcome back to Term 2! We’ve had a busy start so far. Last week Monday’s Cross Country and Walkathon was a blast. All students put in a great effort and most Year 2’s completed the 2km run and Year 1’s completed the 1km run. The Sponsorship Cards have been sent home to fundraise money for the school’s new CommBox Interactive LED Touchscreen in the Library. We’ve also begun the Fit Futures fitness program in Week 2. Students have been developing their athletics skills to get ready for the Athletics Carnival in Term 3. You can encourage your child to practice the skills of jumping, running, throwing and relaying at home too.

As part of our Science unit of work, ‘Watch it Grow’ we will be going on an excursion to the ‘Field of Mars’ on Tuesday 9th May. We cannot wait to learn about how plants and animals survive in different kinds of environments. To prepare we have been learning about phasmids in class which are fascinating stick insects. Don’t forget to ask us about what we’ve learnt after the excursion!

Please remember to check Twitter and the Ashfield Public School Enews app to keep updated with our learning success, upcoming events, notes, alerts and news. Looking forward to a great term of learning.

Welcome back to all students. We hope you had a wonderful holiday break. Another exciting term full of learning awaits us!

On Monday 1st May 2017, Stage 2 participated in the whole school Cross Country and Walkathon. We were greeted with warm and sunny weather and students were excited to participate in the races.

Many of our students ran with determination in the long distance running at Ashfield Park. Parents and caregivers were at the venue to support the students too. We would like to congratulate all students on their efforts throughout the event as they strived to achieve their best. It was great to see students displaying good sportsmanship and supporting each other.

In our classrooms, Stage 2 have been exploring the text type of narratives through a focus on fairy tales. We have been discussing the structure of a narrative and used drama strategies to understand the orientation, complication, resolution and coda of our focus texts. We have also used the writing techniques of action, description, dialogue and feelings in our narratives.

Writing continues to improve in our Stage 2 classes. We look forward to seeing the students understand and use the key features of narrative texts.

Stage 3Stage PageWelcome back Stage 3, what a great start to Term 2. I hope everyone had a wonderful break and is excited to be back at school and ready to learn.

As part of the Term One study on Levels of Government, an excursion to Canberra was conducted from Monday 27th March to Wednesday 29th March. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian government contributed $20 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards these costs. It was wonderful to see the students have such an enjoyable experience.

This term we have already enjoyed the Cross Country and Walkathon down at Ashfield Park. It was so wonderful to see so many students participate.

The literature festival at Newington College was exciting and engaging. Well done Stage 3 on displaying such wonderful, responsible behaviour when visiting another school.

Congratulations to all those Stage 3 students who completed NAPLAN. All of your study and dedication is highly commended.

PSSA Soccer and Netball is off to a wonderful start. All those involved are having an amazing time and showing great commitment to soccer training before school on Tuesday’s and at games on Friday’s.

Year 5 are continuing on with the STEAM program at Canterbury Boys on a Wednesday. We are pleased to announce that we received a grant from Australian Industries for $10,000, which has supported the transport of our students to and from Canterbury Boys for this program.

Congratulations on your efforts so far Stage 3, keep up the amazing work!

Fact of the WeekDid you know! There a species of leaf-cutter ant made an ant hole so big, it

was like a city? According to scientists it had highways, paths and subterranean gardens all inside the hole? It took ten days to pour concrete down the abandoned hole so they could pull away the dirt to see what the ant hill looked like. It turned out that the ants excavated over 40,000 kilograms of dirt to make their underground city! Millions of ants must have been involved in the process! Amazing!

Quote of the Week“Only I can change my life. No one can do it for me.” - Carol Burnett

By Muhit, Kritesh & Diego

• Remain calm if they disclose they are being bullied• Believe what your child is telling you and explore how they

may be emotionally reacting to the bullying.• Recognise that this is an important issue for them• Tell them that bullying is not acceptable and that it’s not their

fault• Help the child or young person understand the power

dynamic involved in bullying. Discuss ways to stop giving the bully power, for example, walking or turning away from the bully

Reassure them that you will help to stop the bullying from continuing

Find out what, when and where it happened and if anyone was present. Contact the school and make sure the teacher is aware of the problem and work out with them how to stop the bullying

If the school has no policy on bullying, suggest they need to consider developing one

Discuss with the child any experiences you may have had about being bullied and how you overcame this issue

Boost your child’s confidence by encouraging them to join activities they are good at eg. sport, art, music

Try to get support from other parents who have faced similar problems.

Kathy Lette desperately wants you to know her autistic sonSBS Website 27th June 2016

By Alyssa Braithwaite

Author Kathy Lette has penned a heart-wrenching Facebook post about her son Jules, who has risen above the bullying and rejection he suffered as a child with autism to become a TV star.

The Australian-born, London-based writer and mother-of-two has revealed she once thought her bright and charming son would end up “living in a bedsit on benefits” as teachers and employers overlooked his potential because he was “differently abled”.

“When my autistic son was nine he came home with a sign sticky-taped to his back saying ‘Kick me I’m a retard’,” Lette writes.

“Tearing up, he stammered, ‘The kids call me a retard... What is a retard?’ You might as well have ripped my heart out of my chest and stomped on it.”

Despite having “an encyclopedic knowledge of the Beatles, Buddy Holly and Shakespeare, including most of Hamlet’s soliloquies”, Jules was put on detention at school for misinterpreting homework, while constant belittling from his classmates gave him low self-esteem.

By high school he found himself “exiled to Social Siberia” and spent his days trying to “make himself invisible”. But it was job-hunting that really brought home the prejudice people with autism can face, as one employer after another rejected him for being different.

She recounts the shocking statistic that while people on the autistic spectrum often have a very high IQ, less than 15 per cent are in the workforce.

“Although wackily bright and quirkily charming, the only future I could envisage for Jules was living in a bedsit on benefits,” Lette recalls.

“These daily rejections is why it’s vital to tell your special needs child that they really are special. It’s imperative to find what they’re good at and encourage it. It doesn’t matter if it’s moth wing fluctuations, igneous rock formations or Tibetan nose fluting - because you never know what their obsession could lead to.”

When Jules wanted to study acting, Lette had her doubts about his ability to empathise with a character’s complex emotional nuances, but she enrolled him in an acting course.

Not only did he excel in class productions, he was cast in two short films, won an acting award, and then secured a part on the BBC medical drama Holby City.

“As he bathes in praise from BBC producers, cast and crew, I think back to those school bullies and occasionally allow myself a little moment of light gloating,” Lette says.

“But my main hope is that Julius’ success will encourage other employers to think outside the neurotypical box and hire the ‘differently abled’. We should stop forcing autistic people to act normal, and help them to become their best autistic selves by focusing on what they can do instead of what they can’t.”

Game of the weekGEOMETRY DASH

Geometry Dash is a game all about timing and jumping through the obstacle course

to complete a level. You can design your own level but you must be able to complete it first before you can share it for the world to play. This game has a light version and a full version. Buying the full version will cost $2.99 but it is worth it because it adds in more to do. It gets harder through the levels but the graphics are high definition and you can enjoy it better than the lite version so if you finished a level don’t worry because there are more levels. We rate this 4.5/5 game points.

The Harmony Day assembly last term went very well. It was a great opportunity for the whole school to do a singing performance. Now that we have reached term 2, our focus in music lessons is shifting from rhythm to pitch. Students will be learning about different aspects of pitch through playing, listening, moving and writing experiences.

There are also many events to look forward to this year with preparation well underway. The school band will be performing for BandFest 2017 at the end of June. The Senior Recorder group will be rehearsing for the Festival of Instrumental Music with many schools at the Salvation Army Congress Hall at the end of June as well. Some Senior Choir members will begin to rehearse for the Cantabile Festival with our performance at the Sydney Opera House in September, and other Senior Choir members with have the opportunity to perform at Sydney Town Hall in October as a part of Celebration Sing Out. Education week in recent years has taken place in term 2, but this year will be at the beginning of term 3. Permission notes for BandFest 2017 have been handed out to the school band, please return them as soon as possible.

Deadly KidsHello everyone and welcome back to Term 2. Hope you had a lovely holiday and are ready to get back to learning. Chinese AmbassadorsAs a vital part of Chinese civilization, traditional clothing plays an important role in the country’s history and culture. Their basic features are cross-collar, wrapping the right lapel over the left, tying with sash and a form of blouse plus skirt or long gown. These features have been preserved for thousands of years till the time of the Republic of China (1912 – 1949AD), when Chinese Tunic Suit (Mao Suit) and cheongsam prevailed. Nowadays, however, most Chinese wear modern clothes in their daily lives, not much difference from their western counterparts. Traditional attires are only worn during certain festivals, ceremonies or religious occasions. However, they are often seen in Chinese television serials and movies. Many of the country’s ethnic minorities also wear their traditional costumes in their daily

lives and they play an important role in the traditional Chinese clothing. Also, the Chinese national colours of the clothes are black, red, green, white and yellow.

Dear Danna, I’m getting in trouble because I’m not returning my homework, like I do but I forget it. What can I do to remember?

Mr. Forgetful

Dear Mr. Forgetful, you should try putting your homework in your bag the day before you turn it in or, putting sticky notes on your everyday stuff reminding you to bring it in. Another really efficient way is to set up reminders on your device since nowadays everyone is on their phone. I hope this helped and remember to bring in your homework.

Sincerely Danna

Year 6 Canberra ReportOn 27th March, Year Six departed for a three day trip to Canberra.

My favourite place was the National Museum of Australia. It was a really eccentric place! My favourite exhibit would have to be either the mega fauna skeleton of a giant wombat, or Pharlap’s heart. Pharlap was a horse who was one of the fastest in the world! Sadly, he is deceased. There was a comparison to an average horse heart and Pharlap’s heart was at least twice the weight of the average horse heart!

There was also a really…unique exhibit. It was a famous professor’s collection. The professor had dead animals preserved in glass jars and with liquid. It was quite horrible and the fact that the animals were killed to be stuffed in glass jars to be gawked at, added to the disgusting factor, but it was quite fascinating all the same. There was a spider with nine legs and a piglet with two lower bodies. I think the piglet was meant to be twins, but the separation didn’t go too well.

There was also the wool of a sheep with the heaviest wool in the world! (I think). It was massive and I think it weighed around 27 kilograms. Apparently if Chris (the sheep) was shorn a few days later, he could’ve died. He had a skin infection because he kept doing his business in the wool and it was unhygienic and bad for his health.

Next we went to Telstra Tower. It was 870 metres high! The view from the windows was gorgeous! You could see all of the lush greenery and small, multi-coloured dots that were cars. We had a spectacular view of Mount Ainslie and the whole of Canberra in general. The sky had a beautiful gradation that ranged from a deep royal blue to a pale baby blue.

We have designed the new Mottainai cards and hopefully they will be released soon. Our Mottainai system will work like this: Playground Buddies will have Mottainai cards with them and if they see you putting rubbish in the bin, they might reward you with a Mottainai card. Once you have ten Mottainai cards, you will receive a Certificate of Success.

Learning SupportAnother exciting term is underway. It may be a shorter one, but it’s going to be a very busy one! Already we’ve had our Walk-A-Thon Cross Country Carnival. It was such a great day and all students were happy and enjoying themselves. I saw the Year 6 students taking the new Kindy students by the hand and walking them safely around the track and I felt proud to be a member of this school. To see many of the parents and talk to them at our school events also helps makes this school community so special. It is always nice to know that the parents see our school as part of their extended family and feel free to contribute to school life.

A large part of my job involves talking and communicating with many families and I feel privileged to be part of the ‘Team’.

Looking forward to Term 2 and working with the wonderful Ashfield P.S. community.
