Charity Citizenship Day—Tuesday 11th October As our regular readers will know, we have changed the organisation of our citizenship days (and the name to Charity Citizenship Days) from whole day activities across the school, to a day where students are in their usual lessons for most of the day and at other times complete reading tests for one lesson and participate in a PHSE-type activity for one lesson.

This Tuesday will be the first Charity Citizenship Day. The charity which Bilton School will be supporting is the Rugby food bank. Rugby food bank is part of The Trussell Trust’s network of 424 food banks, working to tackle food poverty and hunger in our local communities, as well as across the UK. The food bank Network was founded in 2004 after four years of developing the original food bank based in Salisbury. Since then The Trussell Trust has helped communities work together to launch food banks nationwide in a wide range of towns and cities. We are asking pupils to provide one item of canned food for the day which will be collected in their tutor time during the morning. We hope that parents and carers can support this great charity. For the citizenship aspect of the day pupils will attend specific workshops looking at different aspect of PSHE. We have an expert team from the Bradby Club leading workshops on Drug and Alcohol abuse, we have driving Ambitions leading sessions about road safety and all Yr.7 pupils will receive CPR training from our onsite school medical officer. The aim is that by the end of the year all pupils at Bilton School will be CPR trained and able to give immediate first aid if required. We hope all parents and carers can support his fantastic day. competition for Coventry and District and won 2

Golds, 4 Silvers and a Bronze

On top of this, he has also got a time for the Midland

trial in all 7 races and is in the top 10 in Britain for

50m Breaststroke. This is an outstanding

achievement and we would like to congratulate Luie on

such a brilliant performance.

Year 10 Rugby Team Remain Unbeaten!

Bilton School Yr10 rugby team maintained their unbeaten run for the season. Their latest victory

was against Ashlawn School who themselves were currently unbeaten this season. This game

showed all the hallmarks of a local derby, both sides playing a very physical game with some great

tackling on both sides. At half time the score was 14-14 after tries from Callum Brigginshaw and

Matthew Phipps for Bilton. Bilton turned up the pressure on Ashlawn in the second half and

finished 33-14 winners. There were lots of standout performances; Daniel Price led the team as

captain brilliantly, Matthew Phipps led the forwards brilliantly and Andrew Onyemaechi playing a

year up showed his pace to score a fine individual try.

Bilton School welcome Queen Mary’s Grammar School from Walsall in the next round of the U15

NatWest Schools Cup on Monday 10th October, the team will want to continue with their fine

unbeaten run.

acknowledge that some of our students may need additional support in and outside

of the classroom.

We are looking to appoint a Teaching Assistant to support students in our sixth form. The role re-quires that the successful applicant work as a supportive member of our Inclusion Team and provide

support in and out of lesson, particularly for students identified as having Special Educational Needs

and Disabilities.

We wish to appoint a candidate who has a strong passion for supporting the learning and progress

of all students who have barriers to learning within the SEND framework.

The successful candidate will be:

gain experience before commencing teacher training.

This will involve meeting up regularly to plan and contribute to events that will benefit and help people within our local community. The first meeting is on Thursday 6th October in W30b. If you would like to be involved, please speak to Miss Thomas (English teacher).

Grammar Focus of The Week! This week’s focus is structural devices and paragraphs. Ways this is brought to focus in lessons: Asking students to label particular structural devices in their work (headings, bullet points, flow

charts). Verbally recapping when a new paragraph is needed before students begin piece of written work. Mind mapping a range of discourse markers before students begin writing (‘On the other hand’,

‘Moreover’, ‘Subsequently’).

Chinese afterschool club is starting next Tuesday 11th October at 3:15pm-4:00pm in K6. This is open to all year 8 students especially the ones who were taught Chinese last year and would like to carry on with Chinese. It would also be a great opportunity for students who are interested in the Chinese language and culture.

The Library will be running Film Club on a Wednesday afternoon. Film Club will start during form time and will run until latest 5:00pm dependent on the length of the film. If your child is interested in joining they will need to collect a consent form from the library. Please be aware that there is no late bus on a Wednesday, so transport would need to be arranged by parents.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE DURING TERM TIME 2016-17 – INFORMATION FOR PARENTS

The Education (Pupil Registration) (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2013, govern all requests for leave within term-time. When considering such requests for a leave of absence, the school are obliged to act within the law. The amended regulations removed references to ‘holiday’ and ‘extended leave’, as well as the statutory thresh-old of 10 school days. It is now clear that Head Teachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances relating to the application. If the leave is granted, head teachers are able to determine the number of school days a child can be absent for. The Government has not defined ‘exceptional circumstances’ as referred to in the 2013 regulations. It is for the Head Teacher to decide what he/she views as ‘exceptional’ and it is at their discretion if the circumstances warrant the leave to be granted.

The school can only consider Leave of Absence requests which are made by the ‘resident’ parent. Each application for a leave of absence will be considered on a case by case basis and on its own merits. Where applications for leave of absence are made in advance and refused, the child will be required to be in school on the dates set out in the application. If the child is absent during that period, it will be recorded as an unauthorised absence, which may result in legal action being taken against the parent(s), by way of a Fixed Penalty Notice. Failure to make an application for leave in advance can also result in a Fixed Penalty Notice being issued to the parent(s).

All matters of unauthorised absence relating to a Leave of Absence will be referred to the Attendance, Compliance and Enforcement Service of Warwickshire County Council. It is important to note, Fixed Penalty Notices are issued to each parent of each absent child, (for example 2 children and 2 parents, means each parent will receive 2 invoices in the amount of £120 each, totalling £240 for both children, this is reduced to £60 per child if paid within 21 days). Where a Fixed Penalty Notice is not paid within the required timeframe as set out on the notice, the matter will be referred to Warwickshire County Council’s Legal Services to consider instigating criminal proceedings under S444 Education Act 1996.

Fixed Penalty Notices are issued in accordance with Warwickshire County Council’s Code of Conduct for Penalty Notices.

We greatly appreciate parental support to reduce the total amount of days lost due to holidays. We are com-mitted to working in partnership with you to enable your child to reach their academic targets and to support their social development. For this to happen we need to keep individual attendance as high as possible - we all need to play our part.

Your child’s progress academically as well as socially is our shared priority

Warwickshire Secondary School pupils recorded 15,291 half day sessions of absence due to

holiday in the Academic year 2014/15. This is a decrease of 7,629 on the previous year. This is

a positive outcome as it means that 3,814 more days of education were achieved.
