2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time – 2020 (Year A) “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.”

The holidays are over and we are back to the ordinary season of the year. Ordi-nary yet most challenging because recognizing Christ in the most ordinary events of our lives seems to be the most difficult undertaking of a disciple. Because only then is one able to witness to who Jesus is.

Today’s gospel gives us John the Baptist’s testimony to Jesus. All the while, John was preaching about the coming of the Messiah without knowing who would ac-tually fill that role until he saw the Spirit come down upon Jesus. And so now, he is able to testify: “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.”

Like John the Baptist, we are called to be attentive to the prompting of the Spir-

it to the presence of Christ in our everyday life. But one clue or sign for us is that the presence of Christ will bring freedom from bondage of sin and evil. And this certainly begins within each of us – that we overcome the lure of the world and choose to be in

communion with Christ.

“Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.”

-St Jerome

Since 1974, National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education

in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, which in 2020 is January 26 - February 1.

Catholic schools benefit all year long from the religious guidance, prayers and support par-ishes provide. Many parishes join in the National Catholic Schools Week celebration by de-

voting a Mass to Catholic education. (Mass will be held on Monday, January 27 at 9:30a in SJS Gym-all are welcome to join!) Schools start the week by inviting

parishioners and community members to parish-centered events and school open houses that feature their outstanding academic programs, religious education

and service opportunities.
