LITURGICAL MUSICHello! Hello! Greetings from Alaska! Are your ears itching to hear news from Alaska? Not yet. I am not yet bringing you news from the northernmost State of the country. What I want to share with you is a joyful encounter that came to me the week before I left for the voyage. I believe it was an answered prayer.

A very pleasant lady walked into the Church on Tues-day, August 6, 2019, the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, and asked to speak with the pastor. She was told that I would be celebrating the 9:00 AM Mass that morning. Patiently, she waited for me. When I arrived, she greeted me courteously and said that she wanted to speak with me but since I was going to celebrate the Eucharist, we agreed to meet after the Mass. She had already attended the 7:00 AM Mass, so I directed her to wait for me at the Pastoral Center. She was very patient; she waited.

When I went over to see her, she said simply: “Father, I have a gift for you; could the Church use some musical instruments?” Long story short, she offered her per-sonal musical instruments that she had purchased over the course of her long years of playing and singing in churches and in bands! Three trumpets, three electric guitars, two mandolins and a bass guitar. In addition to her generosity, she has a great sense of humor as well; she suggested that I learn and play the bass gui-tar myself. Well, although I responded enthusiastically, we shall wait and see whether I can make time to learn to actually play!

This is another delightful moment that we all need to embrace with apostolic zeal. It is beyond description! But I prayed for something like this, and it came like a dream. I did not obtain her permission, so I will not mention her name in this letter. In due time, however, I hope to introduce this generous donor to the Church, because I asked her to come back occasionally to help us to learn how to use these instruments.

I want to use this occasion to invite all lovers of mu-sic, especially the youth – from middle school to col-lege level students – to avail themselves to use these and other instruments to make “a joyful noise” (sacred music) to enhance the liturgy, particularly the Saturday Mass at 5:30 P.M., which is designated as a “Youth Mass.”

The Church Fathers at the Second Vatican Council taught that: “Sacred music is to be considered the more holy, when it is closely connected with the liturgical action.” Sacred music makes our prayer “more pleas-ing;” that it promotes “unity of minds” and confers “greater solemnity” upon our liturgical celebrations.

Now, someone has laid the foundation. It is God sent! Let us rise to the occasion and build upon it. I believe we shall all marvel at the results.

Fr. Seth.

2019 ANNUAL MISSION APPEAL FOR THE SISTERS OF MARY IMMACULATE OF NYERI

Our parish’s second collection this weekend is in sup-port of the Sisters of Mary Immaculate of Nyeri, a women religious community that was founded in Ke-nya by Bishop Filipo Perlo and three founding mem-bers in 1918. In founding the congregation, Bishop Perlo, an Italian missionary, believed that anyone who would become part of the new community would walk in the footsteps of Jesus Christ in caring for the poor, the needy, and the suffering. Today, more than 400 sisters actively serve in teaching, healthcare, pastoral care, and a variety of social ministries in Kenya, Tanza-nia, Uganda, Zambia, Italy and the U.S. In Kiamumbi — one of Nairobi’s outlying neigh-borhoods — children live in squalid slum conditions and are often orphaned, neglected and abused. For this reason, Maria Immaculata Children’s Education Center serves as a beacon of hope. Founded in 1997 by the Sisters of Mary Immaculate, this combined home and school helps the area’s neediest children grow into healthy, productive members of society. Its mission is to instill moral and spiritual values through care, encouragement, education and community in-tervention. Maria Immaculata Children’s Education Center helps these deserving children realize their full potential and rise above the difficult socioeconomic circumstances from which they come. We appeal for your support so that we can continue with our ministries to these youngsters so that they can have brighter future._____________

SCOUT RELIGIOUS EMBLEMS - DUTY TO GODIf you would like to connect your life in scouting with your life as a Catholic, you should work on your Religious Em-blem. For Cub Scouts, the best way of achieving your Duty to God Adventure is to earn the religious medal of your faith. Tiger and Wolf scouts entering 1st or 2nd grade in September may work on the Light of Christ Emblem. Bear and Webelos scouts entering 3rd, 4th or 5th grade in September may work on the Parvuli Dei (Child of God) Emblem. Workbooks are available at the Scout Shop, Broadway, Massapequa. Begin now and complete the workbook by Christmas vacation, in order to receive your beautiful medal on Scout Sunday, February 2, 2020 at the 10 o'clock Mass.

Classes for older scouts and venture crew members will begin in the Fall with a counselor trained by the Catho-lic Committee on Scouting, Diocese of Rockville Cen-tre. By working on the Ad Altare Dei (To the Altar of God) Emblem, you will learn how the Sacraments are related to your life in Scouting, the Scout Law, Oath, Motto and Slogan, as well as to your family life. By working on The Pope Pius XII Emblem (high school and older) you will participate in discussions about relationships, occupa-tions, vocations, ministry, and important issues facing the Catholic Church today. These medals are presented by the Bishop at a Scout Convocation at St. Agnes Cathe-dral, RVC the following September.

Every scout should earn his or her PURPLE RELIGIOUS KNOT. This knot is awarded by the UNIT and ONCE earned continues to be worn on the uniform through adulthood. Subsequent religious awards earned are rep-resented by a metal DEVICE signifying the scouting level at which the religious medal is earned.A Scout is Reverent.Nancy Rosiello (735-1920)
