Introduction
Heavy PropTechnical Data Sheet
Introduction
This technical data sheet is designed to provide information of sufficient content and detail as to enable engineers, competent in basic structural analysis to safely design structures incorporating the Heavy Prop system.
Design Codes
Heavy Prop is primarily used for temporary heavy jacking and shoring applications, where it’s strength and adaptability make it suitable for most schemes. As such it has been designed to the following codes.
BS449: 1969 BS5975: 1996
Heavy Prop is most commonly used on structures such as bridges and buildings. For this reason Heavy Prop has also been assessed to the following codes.
BS5400: Part 3: 2000 – Design of Steel Bridges BS5950: Part 1: 1990 – Structural use of Steelwork in Buildings
In the production of these data sheets analysis has been carried out to the latest revisions of these codes and certain departures were identified that have been agreed with the Highways Agency.
Safe Working Loads
The safe working loads for members and joints given in the Technical Data Sheet are based on theoretical values calculated in accordance with BS 449 & BS5975 with safety factors applied so as to ensure a minimum factor of safety of 2.0.
However, in certain cases these loads have been further reduced in order to maintain a minimum factor of safety of 2.0 against the onset of permanent deformation as evidenced by full-scale laboratory tests.
In addition, the stated capacities maintain the factors of safety imposed by both BS5400 and BS5950.
Technical Data
The technical data provided within this sheet concerns the strengths of the individual members and joints. In applications such as dead shoring the quoted safe axial loads are to be considered in conjunction with secondary effects due to:
Eccentricity of the applied axial load. Horizontal loads. Self-weight and accidental loads, eg. in horizontal shoring applications.
General
For information on Heavy Prop for its safe use, handling and assembly please refer to Product, Use and Information Sheet or contact Jim Porreca at [email protected]

The Heavy Prop header beams are formed from paired 406x178x67Kg/m universal beams, joined with diaphragms at 250mm web centres at intervals of 2m along their length. The twin header beams are available in lengths of 4m and 6m. Each beam is fitted with male and female end connections within the web depth, leaving the flange clear whilst providing significant moment capacity. Mabey also maintain a stock of various other beams should you have any special requirements.
