The Unbroken Thread: Discovering the Wisdom of Tradition in an Age of Chaos, by Sohrab Ahmari

For millennia, the world’s great ethical and religious traditions taught that true happiness lies in pursuing virtue and accepting limits. Ahmari offers twelve questions for us to grapple with—twelve timeless, fundamental queries that challenge our modern certainties. Among them: Is God reasonable? What is freedom for? What do we owe our parents, our bodies, one another? Exploring each question through the life and ideas of great thinkers, from Saint Augustine to Howard Thurman and from Abraham Joshua Heschel to Andrea Dworkin, Ahmari invites us

to examine the hidden assumptions that drive our behavior and, in so doing, to live more humanely in a world that has lost its way.

Thursday, August 19th 10am-11:30amBeing Wrong: Adventures in the Margin of Error, by Kathryn Schulz

To err is human. Yet most of us go through life assuming (and sometimes insisting) that we are right about nearly everything, from the origins of the universe to how to load the dishwasher. In Being Wrong, journalist Kathryn Schulz explores why we find it so gratifying to be right and so maddening to be mistaken. Drawing on thinkers as varied as Augustine, Darwin, Freud, Gertrude Stein, Alan Greenspan, and Groucho Marx, she shows that error is both a given and a gift—one that can transform our worldviews, our relationships, and ourselves.

Thursday, August 26th 10am-11:30amGive and Take: A Revolutionary Approach to Success, by Adam Grant

For generations, we have focused on the individual drivers of success: passion, hard work, talent, and luck. But today, success is increasingly dependent on how we interact with others. It turns out that at work, most people operate as either takers, matchers, or givers. Whereas takers strive to get as much as possible from others and matchers aim to trade evenly, givers are the rare breed of people who contribute to others without expecting anything in return.

Here All Along: Finding Meaning, Spirituality and a Deeper Connection to Life in Judaism, by Sarah Hurwitz

After a decade as a political speechwriter—serving as head speechwriter for First Lady Michelle Obama, a senior speechwriter for President Barack Obama, and chief speechwriter for Hillary Clinton on her 2008 presidential campaign—Sarah Hurwitz decided to apply her skills as a communicator to writing a book . . . about Judaism. And no one is more surprised than she is.

Meet Dr. Jeff Klein- 74 years old, retired Internal Medicine Physician with background in Infectious Diseases. Born in Cleveland, raised in Shaker Heights. College at Duke, then U. of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Internal Medicine residency and Infectious Diseases Fellowship in Cincinnati. Married my high school sweetheart, Ileen Kurlander. We had 50 wonderful years together before she succumbed to lymphoma in 12/19. Two sons, Russ(48) and Scott(45). Russ lives in Solon and works for JFS, Scott lives in Denver and is an anesthesiologist. Five wonderful grandchildren (said without prejudice). Four

back surgeries along the way due to high school weightlifting injury (At least I won a buck on a bet). You can’t miss me, I walk partially bent over, but am still very active, cycling and walking. I’ve always wanted to be on Temple’s Board, but many years ago Ileen warned me that Board politics would “eat me alive.” That was then, and this is now (a much, much better Board), and I want to contribute while I still can.

Meet Kevin Newman - Kevin is originally from Cincinnati; after graduating from Denison University and the University of Dayton School of Law, he made his way to Northeast Ohio with his wife, Katlin, a Cuyahoga Falls native. For the past seven years, Kevin has worked in governmental affairs compliance and dabbled in real estate on the side. He was a 2019 Jewish Leadership Initiative graduate and has since served on the JCBA Community Relations Committee as well as on the Merriman Road Task Force for Temple Israel. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his family, playing tennis, drinking coffee, and reveling in all things Disney. Kevin and Katlin live in

Wadsworth with their three kids, Eleanor (5), Ezra (3), and Isla (6 months), and their two dogs, Molly and Henry.

This is our first article for the Window as your new co-presidents and we would like to thank everyone for their support, as we look forward to a bright and promising year at Temple. Thank you all for attending the annual meeting, in person or by zoom.

A SPECIAL thanks to our surprise ONEG bakers! Thank you to Shelley Kaye, Candy Mirman and Lynne Weinberger and shout out to Kay Winer and Natalie Winer (Cake Bites and Other Delights) for their special treats. Its acts of kindness and love that make our Temple so special. What a treat for all that attended.

We are excited to be working with the new executive board, as well as the new board of trustees for Temple. We want to get to know you and we want you to get to know us! Below are our two new board members. We are delighted to welcome them and we hope you enjoy reading about them. We wish you all a great summer, back to some normalcy and hope that you join us for the summer months for inside and outside services.

As always, feel free to reach out to either of us with suggestions or questions.

What is Selichot?by Cantor Kathy Fromson

Page 4

When we think of the High Holy Days, many of us think that they begin with Rosh Hashanah during the month of Tishrei. However, Jewish tradition teaches that the preceding month, Elul, is a time when we search our souls in preparation for the magnitude of the Days of Awe. And it is during this time that we observe Selichot.

In Hebrew, selichot translates to “forgiveness,” with an emphasis on the merciful attributes with which God is said to govern the world. In the broadest definition, selichot are penitential prayers said before and during the High Holy Days and other fast days throughout the year. We say these prayers to begin the path to atonement.

What guides us down the path? For some, it is the beautiful music of the choir. For others, it is the Rabbi’s words or the poetry of our liturgy. And for many, it is the instruments- the cello and the violin- that speak directly to our hearts as we open ourselves up to God.

For Selichot this year, which occurs on August 28, we will embark on the journey to our holiest of days. We will change our Torah covers into their purest whites. We will sing Hashiveinu – the prayer of return and renewal. And thanks to the generosity of the Mirman Holiday Music Fund, we will hear the compelling voices of cello and violin as they pave the way to our spiritual center.

5781 Religious School Wrap-up

On May 16th we officially wrapped up our 5781 school year! We welcomed back the tradition of a celebratory color war/Maccabiah games. It was loads of fun and a great way to end a year when we were stuck in box (the Zoom box) for most of it, to be in person, safely outside, playing games! We awarded the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Memorial Paper Cup Trophy to the Blue Team led by our 2nd/5th grade teacher Jenna Baker!

Even though this wasn’t the year we wanted in many ways, it was a success. And we couldn’t have done it without the support and participation of the parents, the energy of the students, and of course the dedication of our teachers. This was a wonderful group of teachers who really stepped up to challenges they’ve never had. We can’t thank them enough.

Becky Rubenstein who taught Katonton and 3rd grades

Claire Bober who taught Katonton and 3rd grades

Lisa Pesanetz who taught Kindergarten

Nicki Embly who taught 1st grade

Jenna Baker who taught 2nd and 5th grades

Kristin Leuchtag who taught 6th grade

Joyce Butlien who taught 4th grade Hebrew and 4th grade on Sundays

Mina Ronen who taught 3rd grade Hebrew

Next year will be a reset of sorts and we have plans for even more dynamic and engaging programs for a wider range of ages!

In July registration for the 5782 (2021-22) school year will open. Please look for that in your email.

What Was It Like ?

We sat, we paced, and we watched you. What is it like knowing you were going to leave us forever? Forever, we would never see you again, never hear you again, and never groan at your bad jokes.

You started to toss and turn, yelling crazy things, arms flailing. You were agitated, then calm and resting again. “It’s for the best, you don’t want them to suffer”. Them, them to suffer. What about us?

How can we normalize gratefulness that “they aren’t suffering”, when we are suffering. Still, we are relieved when it is over. Death came and overtook you. It overtook us as well.

When will the healing begin? It takes as long as it takes. Sometimes a long time until we get past pain and return to focus on grief issues.

When does mourning end? Jewish tradition prescribes a formal period of up to a year. But as we know, “it takes as long as it takes”

Need help? Please contact Temple for Grief Support.
