DESCRIBE THE PRESENT ANO OHIGINAL (IF KNOWN) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE

Martingham is a frame dwelling built on the south bank of Porter Creek in Talbot County. It is composed of three portions, the center part one and one-half stories and the two flanking wings one story. The main part of the house and the east wing are'of historic interest; the west wing was built in 1945 to balance the original kitchen wing.

From an early photograph, the configuration of the two oldest portions appears to have been very little altered. Two obvious exceptions are the introduction of two dormers on the south slope of the roof (and probably the north dormers), and the alteration of a door on the east gable of the main part to a window. The siding has been renewed as have most of the doors and some of the windows.

The main body of the house is three bays long and two bays deep. The central door is accessible through a small portico with benches and a brick floor which dates from the 20th century. The door itself is a six-panel, mid-19th century piece, the two upper panels replaced with glass. The brick foundation is greatly patched but in sound condition; on the face are removable vents with traces of a larger opening on the west side. Most of the south cornice has early facia and crown molding. Two chimneys pierce the roof at the apex within each gable. Both gables have two windows with 6/6 sash flanking the chimney.

Across the north facade is a 20th century screened porch. Two donners light the second story rooms. The east wing has a relatively low pitched roof and one donner on the south side which is now purely decorative. The wing has a door and two windows and a small leanto which presently supplies access to a basement. Most of the fenestration has been altered on the north facade.

Inside, as is illustrated in H. Chandlee Forman's Old Buildin~s, Gardens and Furniture in Tidewater Maryland, there is a small entrance hall wit enclosed stairway on the back wall. Flanking the entrance hall are two rooms and behind these are two other rooms. The front (south) rooms have fireplaces. On the east-west walls of the south half of th~ building are boxed posts, dividing the facade into three bays. On the south posts is a large quarter round molding like the sunmer beam on the second story ceiling of Carvill Hall, Kent County. All other trim is very plain. The floor is old yellow pine, but is an early replacement. Thesecond story has a plain balustrade between the stair and the corridor connecting the two bedrooms. There is a bath on the south side of the corridor, and a small storage space and a closet for each room on the north side of the stair. Flooring has been replaced with narrow yellow pine. Most of the doors appear to date from circa 1820-30.

The kitchen wing (east) was totally remodeled into the present living room 1n the 1940's. The ceiling was raised and the dirt floor replaced with a board floor. According to the Fonnan plan it was composed of two rooms with a stair to the room above in the one adjacent to the main house. The position of posts on the north and south walls suggests the possibility of a previously detached kitchen.

{DESCRIPTION CONTINUED)

-r-.;i.10

In the crawl space beneath the main portion of the house, a large brick area in the center of the building suggests an original central chimney. The west chimney is built of old brick but it is not keyed into the west wall as it would be if it were original. The east side was not accessible. A window grill from the cellar or crawl space window is lying on the ground. It possesses vertical bars about l~" square.

Martingham originally began life as a two-room {per floor) dwelling with central chimney. The rear rooms were added and the roof altered to cover both rooms . At that time the chimney was also replaced by the gable fireplaces. The main portion was built around 1700 and was remodeled in t he early 19th century. The kitchen appears to date from the early 19th century.

North of the kitchen stand two early outbuildings--a dairy and a smokehouse. The dairy is a small, square building with pyramidal roof and a leanto porch . The finial is very weathered. The original floor is below grade now, and there is a makeshift wood floor. The building stands on a brick foundation .

The smokehouse is a good framed structure covered with white pine weatherboard standing on brick piers. The batten door has strap hinges and a long iron bar for securing it. Besides the usual joist or tie beam is one set of collar beams. Several areas of the walls are sheathed.

South of the house is the Hambleton graveyard in which Samuel Hambleton, first Purser of the U.S. Navy, is buried .

The architecture of Martinghamjalthough vastly altered over the years, is significant because of its discernible original appearance; few buildings exist in Maryland from the 17th century. The presence of the brick chimney base confinns the use in early vernacular buildings of a central chimney. The same feature is visible in the larger Carvill Hall in Kent County, and Morgan Hill Farm, Calvert County (both National Register listed).

Martingham was the birthplace of Samuel Hambleton, first Purser of the U.S. Navy (see below). This property has been farmed since the 17th century and continues in agricultural use today, in spite of its proximity to the town of St. Michaels .

Robert Martyn was granted 500 acres of land for transporting his wife and five children to the Province. Martyn assigned 200 acres of this to William Champe, who, in turn, assi~ned that parcel called "Mart1ngham" to William Hambleton, of Scotland, in 1659 {4/333).

William Hambleton took up the land and settled on it. By 1663, he had been appointed High Sheriff of the County> and was commissioned a Justice of the Peace. The fol lowing year, he was elected a Burgess or Delegate to the General Assembly. He died in 1675, leaving his dwelling plantation to his sons, William and John (Tilghman, p. 151), The estate passed from father to son through successive generations.

William Hambleton, owner at the time of the Revolution, was Captain of a company of militia. He fathered a large family, among whom was a son, born in 1777 at Martingham. Samuel Hambleton procured a position in the United States Navy, and was appointed Purser in 1806. He served with Corrmodore Oliver Hazard Perry at the Battle of lake Erie in 1813, and for his gallant actions "there was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor (Tilghman, p. 306).

Martingham remained in the possession of the Hambleton family until 1945, when the last of the male heirs died and the two surviving sisters, Mrs. Nannie H. Martin and Miss Amy Hambleton, sold the farm and the old dwelling house to William Littlewood and his wife, Dorothy (262/290).

In 1967 a part of the land was conveyed by the Littlewoods to Charles Iliff and David R. Owen, trading as "Miles River Fann, 11 (421/74). In 1969 Owen purchased for his own use 7.228 acres and the dwelling house with outbuildings.* The adjoining acres are being fanned, and the nucleus of the old Hambleton home remains. Today, it is being carefully maintained.

*Recent land records indicate that Mr . Owen is now the sole owner of the house and the surrounding farm.
