This book presents, in twenty international papers, the origin and development, and some of themain characteristics and diversities, of the academic discipline of medieval - and later -archaeology in a number of countries in northern Europe. Denmark is the main focus, togetherwith the four other Scandinavian countries, the Faroes and Greenland. The book also providesan insight into some of the discipline's major achievements and fascinating discoveries in theseparts of the world, as well as into some of the current research agendas, with their newperspectives, including developments towards the inclusion of the archaeology of more recentperiods. The book is based on the proceedings of a conference held to celebrate 40 years ofmedieval archaeology as a university discipline in Denmark - one of the first countries to have achair of medieval archaeology, established at Aarhus University, in 1971.

THE SPOLIA CHURCHES OF ROMERecycling Antiquity in the Middle AgesMaria Fabricius Hansen

The church-builders of the Middle Ages treated the architecture of ancient Rome like a quarryfull of prefabricated building materials. This resulted in some very eclectically and ingeniouslyconstructed churches.

In The Spolia Churches of Rome we learn of the principles for the distribution of these antiquearchitectural elements and the significance of breaking down and building on the past. Alsopresented here is a selection of eleven particularly beautiful churches featuring a wide variety ofspolia. This book also contains maps and other practical information which make it the idealcompanion when seeking out the past in modern-day Rome.

A STUDY OF THE CIRCULATION OF CERAMICS IN CYPRUS FROM THE 3RDCENTURY BC TO THE 3RD CENTURY ADJohn Lund

This is the first monograph devoted solely to the ceramics of Cyprus in the Hellenistic and RomanPeriods. The island was by then no longer divided into kingdoms but unified politically, first underPtolemaic Egypt and later as a province in the Roman Empire. Submission to foreign rule waspreviously thought to have diluted - if not obliterated - the time-honoured distinctive Cypriotcharacter. The ceramic evidence suggests otherwise.

The distribution of local and imported pottery in Cyprus points to the existence of severalregional exchange networks, a division that also seems reflected by other evidence. Thesimilarities in material culture, exchange patterns and preferential practices are suggestive of acertain level of regional collective self-awareness.

From the 1st century BC onwards, Cyprus became increasingly engulfed by mass produced andstandardized ceramic fine wares, which seem ultimately to have put many of the indigenousmakers of similar products out of business - or forced them to modify their output. Also, theceramic record gradually became less diverse during the Roman Period than before -developments which we today might be inclined to view as symptoms of an early form ofglobalisation.

REVEALING & CONCEALING IN ANTIQUITYTextual & Archaeological Approaches to SecrecyEdited by Eva Mortensen, Sine Grove Saxkjaer

Secrecy and the act of concealing and revealing knowledge effectually segregate the initiatedand the uninitiated. The act of sharing or hiding knowledge plays a central role in all humanrelations private or public, political or religious. This volume explores the concept of secrecy andits implications in Antiquity, Late Antiquity and the Renaissance in eleven cross-disciplinarycontributions using both textual and archaeological sources. By exploring the revealing andconcealing of knowledge across different social contexts, time frames and geographicallocations, the book provides insight into the concept of secrecy and its potential for illuminatingthe agendas behind identity construction, political propaganda, literary works, religious practicesand shared history.

MUSEUM STUDIES

THE PAST IN THE PRESENTThe Collection of Classical & Near Eastern Antiquities in the National Museumof DenmarkEdited by Bodil Bundgaard Rasmussen, John Lund

The past is inextricably embeded in the present – whether we are aware of it or not. The presentwas shaped by the thoughts and deeds of those who went before, and our daily life largely playsout on a stage set by our ancestors. The seven contributors to this volume have taken their cuefrom ancient artefacts of the cultures of the Mediterranean and Near East that are kept in theNational Museum of Denmark. The authors explain how these items were gathered in the firstplace at their remote places of origin, and why the collectors deemed the objects so importantthat they were willing to go through considerable trouble and expense to bring them to Denmark. Also, the demonstrate how the interpretation and perceived significance, thereby sketchingimportant stages in the formative history of the National Museum.

CLIMATE AND ANCIENT SOCIETIESEdited by Susanne Kerner, Rachael Dann, Pernille Bangsgaard

Climate and human responses to it have a strongly interconnected relationship. Thus whenclimate change occurs, the result of either natural or human causes, societies should react andadapt to these. But do they? If so, what is the nature of that change, and are the responsespositive or negative for the long-term survival of social groups?

In Climate and Societies, scholars from diverse disciplines includ-ing archaeology, geology andclimate sciences explore scientific and material evidence for climate changes in the past, theircauses, their effects on ancient societies and how those societies responded.

Organized around four key themes each dealing with ways to understand past climates, humanimpact, and sustainability – holocene climate reconstruction; responses of complex societies toclimatic variation; Archaeological evidence for pollution and its ecological implica-tions; andstable isotope analysis in the Middle East – the chapters demonstrate the value of a longue duréeperspective on a topic of crucial importance to the future of our planet.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL SCIENCE, METHODOLOGY & TECHNIQUES

ART, ARCHAEOLOGY & SCIENCEAn Interdisciplinary Approach to Chinese Archaeological & Artistic MaterialsMeili Yang

Science has played a crucial role in the initial stages of westerners’ collecting and studying ancientChinese artworks and archaeological materials. The relevant scientific data were quicklygenerated using progressively sophisticated examination techniques. But the task of integratingscientific data with archaeological and art historical resources, and developing a workableinterdisciplinary study method, has lagged behind scientific endeavor.

Part One of this book explores the modes and functions of the scientific resources available andtheir integration into interdisciplinary study methods and models; pre-war researchersparticularly emphasized that their studies of Chinese artistic/archaeological materials werescientific. Improvements in precision and advanced specialization of examining instruments andtechniques resulted in substantively more detailed scientific data, particularly in the post-warperiod. This brought with it new research dimensions and increased knowledge of targetedsamples, and also greater challenges to the integration of interdisciplinary study.

In Part Two, Meili Yang establishes a feasible method of interdisciplinary study in terms of fivecase studies related to Chinese Song ceramics. Relevant data are provided and professionallyexplained, resulting in critical new information related to contemporary ceramic technologies. This technology information leads us to the recognition of the uniqueness of each single artworkand the artisan’s individual intention – and critically, recognition of the close association withcontemporary society and culture at the time of manufacture. Utilizing this new method ofinterdisciplinary study, modern science, ancient technology, and art and society are seen to haveexplicit connections.

ARCHAEOLOGY - THE AMERICAS

OBLIQUE VIEWSAerial Photography & Southwest ArchaeologyCharles A. Lindbergh

In 1927, the year that Charles A Lindbergh crossed the Atlantic Ocean, another revolution washappening on the ground. A group of young archaeologists was forging an area of study centeredon the ancient Southwest. Aviation and archaeology merged when Alfred V. Kidder, of theCarnegie Institution, hired Lindbergh to photograph the sites from an airplane. Lindbergh’s aerialsurvey of the Four Corners and Upper Rio Grande, made with Anne Morrow Lindbergh at thecontrols and, possibly, photographing some of the sites, were the first low-angle views of thevast, interconnected ancient landscape. The Lindbergh documentation of the sites remains avaluable historic record of the northern Southwest plateau. Ninety years later, noted aerialphotographer Adriel Heisey has been commissioned by Archaeology Southwest, an organizationdedicated to preservation archaeology, to re-photograph the ancient sites exactly as Lindberghdid. The juxtaposition of thirty black-and-white remastered Lindbergh images and thirtycontemporary color images, provides a fascinating survey of the area over nearly a centuryallowing a unique view of the multi-layered, cultural landscape of the American Southwest overtime.

THE KAILAS AT ELLORAA New View of a Misunderstood MasterworkRoger Vogler, Peeyush Sekhsaria

Here, for the first time, American architect Roger Vogler examines this great Hindu temple—carved downward from the top of a hillside in Maharashtra—from the perspective of his fellowarchitect: the unknown sthapati who actually designed it thirteen centuries ago.

The Kailas’s magnificent sculptures and carved architectural details have all been extensivelydocumented by many eminent scholars. The great volume of space that envelops them (whichas every architect knows is designed with fully as much care and purpose as its solid stone) is,however, almost totally absent from their writings, as are the moral and religious messages thatlie beneath these stones, hidden in metaphor. Not the least of these are the towering raw cliffsenclosing the temple’s precincts: themselves metaphors for the presence of God.

These absences have led to dozens of misunderstandings and erroneous conclusions regardingthe monument itself and the intentions of its designer. Focusing not merely on its stones but onthe meanings that lie beneath them as well, this book corrects these misunderstandings andrebuts these errors in the course of an entertaining and revelatory walking tour of the entiretemple.

AUTHOR INFORMATION: American architect Roger Vogler served as onsite design advisor

for IIT Kanpur’s campus (1968-71), and as Director of Planning & Construction for the Universityof Connecticut and University System of New Hampshire. His experience of the Kailasa, which heconsiders among the world’s greatest works of architecture, spans 55 years.Peeyush Sekhsaria is an architect/geographer specialising in earthen architecture andsustainable development.
