Instructor: Dr. Dean Turner. Contact me by email ([email protected]) or phone (706-272-4487) or stop by my office (Peeples 305E). My office hours are M 9:30-11:30, R 12:30-4:30 and W
9:30-12:00. You may be able to meet me outside of office hours by appointment, or stop by my office
and see if I am not too busy. I will use your DSC email address to contact you and email is the best
way to contact me. I will respond to you within 24 hours Monday-Thursday and within 48 hours
Friday-Sunday.
Textbook: Raymond Chang "General Chemistry: The Essential Concepts" 6th Ed. (New York:
McGraw-Hill Higher Education, 2011). ISBN 978-0-07-337563-2. This is recommended but you may
use a different textbook. In particular, be aware that older editions or “Chang Essential Concepts” are
word-for-word the same as the 6th Ed. and are available online very cheap.
Other Course Materials: This syllabus, the anticipated class schedule, lab handouts, and other
supporting documents are on GeorgiaView accessible through DSConnect.
Each student must register for this class at WebAssign to do online homework. More on this below.
Each student must purchase an i>clicker 2 (not the other types of i>clicker) before the third day of
class. These are available online cheap. More on this below.
Each student must have a scientific calculator (cell phones may not be used on tests).
Objectives: Students completing CHEM 1211 should be able to:
1. Understand the fundamental structures of atoms and molecules.
2. Understand the mole concept, stoichiometry, and laws of composition.
3. Determine valences, structure and characteristics, chemical compounds, solutions, and gases. 4. Understand basic principles of chemical bonding and molecular orbital theory.
Grading: Tests 50% A = 90%
Laboratory 20% B = 80%
Homework 20% C = 70%
In-class 10% D = 60%
There will be four tests plus the final exam, which are averaged to give the “Tests” score.
The Laboratory score will be the average of all Report scores.
Most homework will be done online (more below).
The In-class score will be the average of all daily scores after the lowest three have been
dropped.
The grade scale is tentative but cutoffs will not be higher than shown here.
Policies on Attendance, Makeups and Work Turned In Late
Prompt attendance is required in both class and laboratory.
Excused absences:
o Absence may be excused for compelling unavoidable events including but not limited
to military service, an official scheduled school activity, illness, car accident or
required court appearance. Absence will not be excused for routine, avoidable or
negligent things including but not limited to work schedule, vacations or oversleeping. Absence will be excused only if the absence is documented as specified in the next
bullet point.
o Required documentation: Absence will be excused only after the student submits an
email explaining the reason for the absence. I will respond by email. Additional documentation (e.g. accident report, emergency room receipt) may be required at the
instructors’ discretion.
page 3
o Officially Approved DSC Activities are excused, providing the student meets the
requirements of the official school policy on page 9.
In-class grades: There is no provision for making up in-class work except that the three lowest
unexcused in-class scores will be dropped. If absence is excused then that day’s score is not
counted when calculating the in-class score.
Online homework using WebAssign:
o There will be a separate assignment corresponding to each chapter that is covered in
class.
o Most but not all assignments will be due six to eight days after the chapter has been
covered in class. See the WebAssign web site for official due dates.
o Each answer that is submitted late incurs a 30% penalty. There is no penalty on
answers that the student gets right on time even if other answers are submitted late.
No homework will be accepted after the last day of classes, May 1.
Paper homework: Paper assignments must be turned in by the start of class on the day they
are due. Due dates will be posted on GeorgiaView.
If an unanticipated absence (e.g. sickness or accident) is excused on the day a paper
homework assignment is due then the assignment will be considered to be on time if it is
submitted as soon as possible. Documentation will be required.
If absence is anticipated then the student must contact the instructor in advance to make
arrangements to submit the assignment.
Lab: There is no provision to make up a missed lab. If absence from lab is excused then that
experiment’s lab report will not be used when calculating the lab grade. Lab reports are due
at the end of the lab period if they can be completed in that time. If the report is not finished
at the end of the lab period then the report is due by the beginning of the next Tuesday class.
Late penalties for paper homework and lab reports will be
o ⎼10% if turned in less than 24 hours late
o ⎼30% if turned in 1 to 7 days late
o ⎼50% if turned in more than 7 days late
o Additional time may be granted and the late penalty may be waived if lateness is
excused as discussed above for absences
Tests (except Final Exam): If absence is excused then the student will be given the opportunity
to take a makeup test. It is your responsibility to contact me within 24 hours of your return to school and to contact the testing center to schedule a makeup test
(http://www.daltonstate.edu/testing-center/index.html or google “dalton college testing
center”) within five days of your return to school. The makeup test may be different from the
regularly scheduled test.
Deadlines:
o No homework or lab report will be accepted after the last day of classes, April 30.
o No makeup test may be taken more than 5 days after you return to school.
Exceptions: Deadlines may be extended and/or penalties may be reduced or waived at the
instructors’ discretion for compelling unavoidable events including but not limited to an
official scheduled school activity, illness, car accident or required court appearance.
page 4
Exceptions will not be granted not for routine, avoidable or negligent things including but not limited to work schedule, vacations or oversleeping. Exceptions may be granted only if the
reason is documented as discussed above under “Excused absences”.
Final exam: A student in good standing who misses the final exam will be given a grade of I, in
which case the student is responsible for consulting and following Dalton State policy
concerning Incompletes.
In-Class Scores: Class attendance, participation and performance will be assessed through the use of clickers and worksheets. Every class will be graded except for test days and review days. 50% of each
in-class grade is attendance. Classes may start with an opening quiz.
Clickers: I will be using the i>clicker student response system. i>clicker helps me to understand what
you know and gives everyone a chance to participate in class. I will use i>clicker to keep track of attendance. Please see grading and attendance policies to see how i>clicker will be used for grading
and attendance.
You should purchase an i>clicker 2, not the other versions because the others cannot enter numerical
answers. Used clickers can be purchased online cheap.
Online Homework (WebAssign): Some homework will be turned in on paper but most homework
will be assigned and completed on-line using WebAssign (https://www.webassign.net/login.html).
The on-line homework must be submitted by computer—do not submit on-line homework on paper.
Late homework: Extensions may be granted for late homework but extensions incur a 30%
penalty on all unearned points (answers that have not yet been marked correct). Answers
that have already been marked correct incur no penalty.
o Automatic extensions: If you want an on-line homework extension within seven days
of the original due date, just log in to WebAssign and click the Extension Request link
to get an extra two days to complete the assignment.
o Manual extensions: Follow the procedure for excused absences discussed above. It
may take up to 48 hours to process a manual extension.
o If you need an extension, do not view the assignment until the extension has been
granted. No extension will be granted if you have seen the answer key, which is
visible after the due date has passed.
Special notes for WebAssign:
o A sheet titled “About WebAssign” is available through the class GeorgiaView site. It
has more detailed information, including how to log in and how to get EXTRA CREDIT.
Read it carefully.
o You may use WebAssign for free during the grace period but each student must register for WebAssign before the end of the grace period. You may register online
with a credit card. Follow the instructions on the WebAssign page after you have
logged in.
o You can see answers after the due date has passed.
o If you believe that WebAssign has made an error that affects your grade, PRINT THE
PAGE that shows the error (for troubleshooting) and bring it to the instructor. (Most
cases of WebAssign error are really student error.)
o If you have a question about an online homework problem, PRINT THE PAGE that
shows the problem, KEEP ALL WRITTEN WORK you have done on the problem, and
bring all of it to me.
page 5
o All information in the WebAssign Student Guide is included in this syllabus by reference. It is available by clicking “Help” at the top right of the page after you have
logged in to WebAssign.it.
Encouragement to do your homework early: Any answer you get correct more than 48 hours
before the assignment is due gives you 20% extra credit on that answer. Any answer you get
correct less than six hours before the assignment is due gives you a 5% penalty. You don’t lose
the extra credit you earn on early answers if you submit other answers later.
Laboratory: Lab attendance rules are discussed above.
Required clothing: For safety reasons, each student must wear clothing that covers the skin
from the neck down. Short sleeves are acceptable but the chest, midriff, legs and feet must be
covered. Many students put on a T-shirt, sweat pants, shoes and socks for lab.
No lab manual is required. Lab handouts will be provided at the beginning of lab. You may
also download lab handouts from GeorgiaView.
Safety training: Every student must receive safety training before doing any lab work. Safety
training will be given in the first lab meeting. Students who miss the first lab meeting must
contact the instructor to arrange to receive safety training before doing any lab work. Plan on
it taking one hour. If a student must miss a lab because he/she missed the first lab meeting
and then failed to arrange to receive safety training, it counts as an unexcused absence.
Professionalism counts for 20% of every report score. It includes these things.
o Arrive on time and be ready to start working right away.
o Wear clothing that covers you from the neck down.
o Prepare for each experiment before the lab period begins. This may include putting a
chemical in an oven to dry before the lab starts. o Take care of balances and other sensitive equipment.
o Work efficiently so that you can finish in the time allotted.
o Be alert, pay attention, and follow all safety rules. o Failure to follow safety rules can result in a grade penalty or even removal from lab.
Students who are removed from lab for safety violations will receive a grade of zero
for that experiment.
Disruptive behavior can result in removal from lab. Students who are removed from lab for
disruptive behavior will receive a grade of zero for that experiment. Disruptions in lab include
anything that keeps others from paying attention to the safety-and-instructions talk that
starts each lab period or makes it hard for other students to do their work.
Cell phones are allowed in lab except that you must pay attention to the safety-and-
instructions talk that starts each lab period and you must not allow cell phone use to keep you
from working safely and effectively. Music players are not permitted.
Anticipated Class and Lab Schedule: Please see GeorgiaView. The schedule on GeorgiaView will be
updated whenever the schedule changes. Official paper homework due dates are in GeorgiaView. You will be given a copy of the week’s lab handout at the beginning of lab but you can see lab handouts
through GeorgiaView.
Final Exams
CHEM 1211-02 (class MW at 12:15) Final Exam Wednesday May 2, 11:50 a.m.-1:50 p.m.
CHEM 1211-06 (class TR at 8:00) Final Exam Tuesday May 1, 7:30-9:30 a.m.
page 6
Disruptive Behavior in Class: Any student whose behavior is excessively distracting to other students will be asked to leave for the rest of the class period and will receive a score of zero on In-
Class work for the day. Disruptive behavior includes but is not limited to
Excessive talking or working on non-class activities.
Habitually arriving late for class. Students who arrive late may be refused admittance to class.
Electronic Devices: Electronic devices may be used. Be aware, though, that research has shown that
students with laptops tend to get worse grades. Cell phone use also is also correlated with lower
grades. Tablets, on the other hand, seem to be quite useful. If your use of a device is distracting to
others, it is considered to be disruptive behavior and you will be asked to leave for the rest of the class.
Cheating: Deliberate cheating will result in a one letter grade reduction for the first offence and a
grade of F in the course for the second offence. Accidental cheating on lab reports and homework only
(see below) will result in a score of zero only on the part of the assignment on which the accidental
cheating occurred. In this class, cheating is defined differently for tests than it is for other work.
The first three tests are open notes but not open book. Only a pen or pencil, a calculator, and a
3×5 card of hand-written notes may be used. No additional source of information may be
consulted, except that you may ask the instructor questions. It is forbidden to speak to other
students or share a calculator or other material with another student during a test. Hats must
be removed. Cell phones, tablets, smart watches, music players and similar devices must be turned off and put in an inaccessible location during tests. Any use of a wireless device during a
test will constitute cheating unless prior permission has been granted by the instructor.
Notes may not be used on the Final Exam. Only a pen or pencil and a calculator may be used.
On homework and lab reports, students are encouraged to work together and are allowed to
seek help from the instructor and other sources. Nevertheless, each student is expected to create his or her own answers. Never represent the work of others as your own. This means,
for example, that it is OK to talk to other students about an essay, but each student must then
write his or her own essay. No two students should ever turn in identical work. Accidental
cheating is when the student does not understand that her or his conduct is not permitted and usually results when students work together too closely. When in doubt, ask the instructor.
Deliberate cheating includes but is not limited to falsifying laboratory data, copying the work
of others (except as part of a collaborative lab project in which data are shared), and copying
from (plagiarizing) a textbook, web page or other source.
Inclement Weather/College Closure Emergency Instructional Plan: In the event the college is
closed due to inclement weather or another unforeseen event, students will consult the schedule on
GeorgiaView to determine which chapters would be covered during the time the college is closed.
Students will be responsible for anything in that chapter. Any online homework assignments due during the closed interval will be due at the regularly scheduled date and time. Paper homework
assignments or lab reports due during the closed interval will be due the first day class meets after
the college reopens. Labs that are missed will either be made up at a later date or removed from the class schedule and not counted at the end of the semester in the final grade. Exams will be moved in
the class schedule to accommodate the curtailed schedule. I may be available via e-mail on a limited
basis when the college is closed.
Drop/Withdrawal Policy: Revised June 25, 2007
Students wishing to withdraw from the course may do so without penalty until the mid-point of the semester, and a grade of W will be assigned. After that point, withdrawal without penalty is permitted
only in cases of extreme hardship as determined by the Vice President for Academic Affairs; otherwise a
page 7
grade of WF will be issued. (Please note: At Dalton State College, the Hardship Withdrawal process requires students to withdraw from all classes at the college.) The proper form for dropping a course is
the Schedule Adjustment Form, which can be obtained at the Enrollment Services Office in Westcott
Hall. The Schedule Adjustment Form must be submitted to the Enrollment Services Office. Students who
disappear, completing neither the official withdrawal procedure nor the course work, will receive the grade of F. This instructor will not withdraw students from the class. Withdrawal from any Dalton
State College classes is a student responsibility. The last day to drop classes without penalty is March
23.
Complete Withdrawal Statement: Revised July 17, 2012
“The proper form for withdrawing from all classes at the college after the official drop/add period but
before the published withdrawal date is the Schedule Adjustment Form. All students must meet with a staff member at the Office of Academic Resources in the Pope Student Center to initiate the
withdrawal process. After meeting with the staff member, students will then finalize the withdrawal
process in the Enrollment Services Office.”
Ethical Conduct/Academic Dishonesty:
Cheating and plagiarism are a part of the Dalton State Code of Student Conduct, which can be found in its most updated form at http://daltoncampuslife.com/student-conduct/. ANY assistance provided or
given in any way toward work in a class constitutes cheating, unless such behavior is authorized by
your instructor. Additionally, any use of the ideas or words of others should be noted, or this will
constitute plagiarism. For more details on what Dalton State considers to be Academic Dishonesty, please review the Code of Student Conduct. Instructors will assign grades based on classroom
performance. Additional sanctions may be provided as a learning experience from the Student
Conduct process. Borrowing another students’ work or collaborating on an assignment not
designated as collaborative is unacceptable. Furthermore, presenting work that was completed for another class, while not plagiarism technically, is not the same as presenting original work, and is
therefore unacceptable.
Classroom Behavior:
Dalton State is committed to respect via the Roadrunner Respect pledge. To learn more, please visit
http://daltoncampuslife.com/roadrunner-respect/.
“I pledge to show my fellow Roadrunner students, faculty, staff, and administration respect by
treating others the way they want to be treated and by thinking about others first before making
decisions that might affect them.
Officially Approved DSC Groups and Activities: (Effective Fall 2013)
When students are engaged in officially approved Dalton State groups or activities that require them
to participate in events off campus during school days, they shall be treated similarly to any faculty or staff member acting in that same capacity. Thus, just as faculty and staff have excused absences from
their regular work schedules, students shall be excused from class without penalty if they are off
campus representing Dalton State College in an approved, official capacity during their regular class
time. Examples include presenting a paper or otherwise participating in a conference, attending a University System student affairs event, participating in intercollegiate competition (athletic or
academic), participating in an approved field trip, etc. Just as faculty and staff members are required
to submit Request to Travel forms for approval, in order to be excused, the student needs to provide
the following information to the instructor prior to the date when he/she will be absent from class:
notification of the event (in the case of athletics, students should provide each instructor a
schedule of away events at the beginning of the semester or as soon as possible after the
schedule is available);
page 8
estimated time of departure from and return to campus (for example, if a student has an away
game in the evening and will not be leaving campus until 3:00, he/she will not be excused
from classes prior to that time on that day; similarly if the event is in the morning and the student will be returning to campus during the day, he/she is expected to attend any class
scheduled after the return trip); and
contact information for the person or organization sponsoring/authorizing the student’s
participation in the event.
The student shall be allowed to make up any work missed during the time he/she is off campus
representing DSC in an official capacity. He/she shall discuss what will be missed with the instructor and make arrangements to make up any assignments, tests, presentations, etc. that were scheduled
on that date.
Disability Support Services: (Revised July 30, 2014)
Students with disabilities or special needs are encouraged to contact Disability Support Services. In
order to make an appointment or to obtain information on the process for qualifying for
accommodations, the student should visit the Disability Support Services Library Guide at http://www.libguides.daltonstate.edu/Disability or contact the Coordinator of Disability Support

Title IX - Sex Discrimination, Harassment, & Assault
In accordance with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (“Title IX”), the University System
of Georgia (USG) does not discriminate on the basis of sex in any of its education programs or
activities or in employment. The USG is committed to ensuring a safe learning and working environment for all members of the USG community. To that end, this Policy prohibits sexual
misconduct, as defined herein.
In order to reduce incidents of sexual misconduct, USG institutions are required to provide prevention tools and to conduct ongoing awareness and prevention programming and training for
the campus community. Such programs will promote positive and healthy behaviors and educate the
campus community on consent, sexual assault, alcohol use, dating violence, domestic violence, stalking, bystander intervention, and reporting.
When sexual misconduct does occur, all members of the USG community are strongly encouraged to
report it promptly through the procedures outlined in this Policy. The purpose of this Policy is to ensure uniformity throughout the USG in reporting and addressing sexual misconduct.
