SWPS.ORG.UK Staff News This is the sad moment when we say goodbye to some much loved staff… Mrs Meechan is to retire after 17 years of teaching maths at the school. Ranging from the most able mathematicians to those who have found the subject a struggle, Mrs Meechan has been brilliant at making the subject both accessible and come alive. She has also been our wonderful timetabler – arguably the most important person in the school! Mrs Wiggett is to retire after 13 years of teaching maths at the school. She has been a devoted and dedicated teacher and will be much missed. Mrs O’Hara is to retire after 6 years of teaching maths at the school. Her teaching of maths has been inspiring and many SWPS students are grateful to her for everything she has done. After nine years at the school teaching Business Studies, Mrs Harrison has decided to leave at the end of this term in order spend more time with her family and to pursue new career opportunities. We thank her for her contribution to the academic life of the school community during her time at SWPS and wish her all the best for the future. Mrs Eldridge will also be leaving us having taught HE for 22 years. Her commitment to the school has been unwavering and her kindness and care for the students is unmatched. She will be much missed both by staff and students Miss Perlowska Goose from the Geography and Rowing departments leaves us to teach at LEH. Miss PG, as the students call her, has been an excellent teacher and a great all round member of staff, willing to get involved whenever needed. Mrs Reeves (Part Time) leaves the science department to teach at Spring West Academy. We thank her for her time here and wish her well. Miss Rowe leaves us to join the Fire Brigade, after teaching PE, Rowing and Geography. A fantastic and popular teacher, Miss Rowe is clearly a loss to the profession. We will all miss her. Miss Singleton from the Chemistry department and Head of Year 11 leaves SWPS after 5 years to become Head of Chemistry at Harrow School (Hong Kong). Not only an outstanding teacher, Miss Singleton has also been a superb Head of Year – tireless in her devotion and commitment to her charges. Mrs Lewis will be going maternity leave in September and we wish her all the best. Other staff news – from September 2018 Mr Willis will be Deputy Head of Sixth Form. Mrs Synge will be Head of Year 10. Mrs Bodkin will be Head of Chemistry (Maternity Cover). Mrs Timpson will be Director of Digital Strategy. Mr Chapman will be Lead for Medics/Dentists and Vets (MDV) (Maternity Cover). Mr Keir will be Director of Rowing. Ms Farmer will be going Part time next year as Sport Science teacher and Rowing Coach. Mr Boddy will be Assistant Director of Rowing. C Muller Head SWPS End of Year Round Up Achievement Education in general and schools in particular should be inspiring. To be inspired by the achievements of those who have gone before us, poets, scientists, engineers, doctors, philosophers etc., is a mark of great teaching. To be inspired by the achievements of your students is a true privilege. The exciting events that the entire school witnessed at Henley last week, watching our students represent SWPS at the world’s most famous rowing event, were both magnificent and awesome. Of course no achievement can come from nothing. To achieve something worthwhile requires effort, dedication and commitment. Hours of practice is the price that every successful competitor has to pay in order to achieve what they want. Having watched the rowing, that evening I had been invited to present the prizes at Twickenham Preparatory School. Again I saw the proud faces of the prize winners, though young, beam with a sense of achievement and accomplishment. It is a truism but success is personal. Although audited and judged by the outside world in terms of its value, any form of success, nonetheless, remains a deeply personal event in one’s life. To achieve success through the pursuit of personal excellence in whatever one is doing is a goal all can aspire to. It requires a determination that arises from an inner compulsion; a compulsion that gets one up in the morning; a compulsion that pushes through the physical and intellectual discomfort and finally a compulsion that overcomes setbacks and challenges. This compulsion is the engine to personal excellence and it is something that we so often see here at SWPS all year. I hope that you all have a wonderful summer.

been exceptionally busy for the PE Department.

We have been working

hard to develop links

with outside agencies in

order to develop the provision in both the

The year culminated in

a Chelsea FC taster day

for Key Stage 3

students and Sports

The photos show a few highlights of the day. The house spirit was in abundance and the competitive side of our students and staff definitely showed! This culminated in the staff vs 6th form relay, in which the staff

came home victorious!

There were no SWPS Sports Day records broken this year, which was not surprising due to the heat wave that continues to cover the UK!

A special thankyou to all the Lower 6th students who assisted with both track

and field events, ensuring the smooth running of the day.

CHELSEA FC TASTER SESSIONS

We have been very fortunate to develop links with Chelsea FC over the past term. On Monday 2nd July, Chelsea ran multiple taster sessions for Key Stage 3 students. The sign up rate from students was fantastic and great fun was had by all. A variety of skills were developed throughout the session and the commitment and determination shown was outstanding. From September

Chelsea will be running a co-curricular club at SWPS.

HARLEQUINS RUGBY SWITCH PROJECT

We have also been very fortunate to develop links with Harlequins and be part pf the Harlequins Foundation SWITCH project.

Kirsty Openshaw our coach stated, ”I have thoroughly enjoyed coaching all of the Year 10 students as part of the SWITCH programme, and it has been

extremely satisfying watching them embrace rugby whilst developing new and exciting skills..”

Kirsty has made a huge impact on the Year 10 students, they have shown

outstanding commitment and resilience within their curriculum lessons. Next year promises to be even more exciting for SWPS students, with ever growing

playing opportunities and experiences such as SWITCH schools festivals, special player appearances, attending Harlequins Ladies games at the Stoop

and many upcoming girls only rugby camps.
