Head’s News I recently read the following quotation from a leading businessman and CEO:

“when you press the pause button on a machine, it stops. But when you press the pause button on human beings they start. You start to reflect, you start to rethink your assumptions, you start to reimagine what is possible and most importantly, you start to

reconnect with your most deeply held beliefs. Once you have done that, you can begin to imagine a better path.” Here are words that should make us all pause, especially our

students whose lives can be so frantic, busy and often noisy.

Here is an individual who understands the pressures of today’s market place and the increasing demands on today’s next generation of leaders, pointing out the importance of a moment for reflection. The opportunity to stop and pause is an essential condition of our life. When we take that opportunity to take stock, we

can provide ourselves with much needed space for reflection and thought. For education this insight is crucial – deep learning and deep knowledge can only come from practising deep reflection and consideration. Reflecting on what has been taught,

Sport News Netball—19 Jan 2017 12 strong teams awaited us at a very cold

Nonsuch Grammar School in Kingston. The 6 minute each way format made it difficult to

correct any damage done in the early part of the game so all

the girls went out strong from the onset. The U13s narrowly lost their first game by one goal but played really well in the freezing conditions.

The U12s started powerfully showing dominance to win their first game 11 to 1. The matches were in quick succession not giving the girls long to recharge or, thankfully, get cold. U12s went on to

lose the next game but win the following 3. All the girls played like 7 defenders and 7 attackers, showing real fight and determination. The U13s tried equally as hard but lost their next 2 games. By the final game we knew both teams

unfortunately wouldn’t go through to the final but they still gave it their all. The U13s won their final match 13 to 6 but the U12s lost by 2 goals.

Well done to all who played, the coaches were so proud of your constant fight, effort and as always, you behaved impeccably. Player of the tournament for the U12s goes to Amy Twyford for playing a strong, unstoppable WD, never giving up

marking or working for the interceptions. Well done Amy. Player of the tournament for the U13s goes to Bethany Illsley for playing an unselfish and intelligent 72 minutes of netball. Well done Bethany.

The U12 team consisted of: Maeve Slater, Jenny Gray, Ellie Monk, Amy Twyford, Mischa Illman, Sierra Warnes, Beth Wernham and Milly Wee. The U13 team consisted of: Eleanor Raven, Saskia Cronjaeger, Bethany Illsley, Thea Morton, Izzy Man, Milly Staveley, Lizzie Way and Ela Singh. Under 18s vs Notre Dame The Sixth Formers returned to the Netball court on form this week for a match against Notre Dame. They dominated the first quarter by fighting for every ball. Drawing at half time meant the game was anyone’s but unfortunately we struggled to get past Notre Dame’s defence so narrowly lost.

Well done girls for playing a very entertaining game of netball and thank you to Helen Sproston and Lauren Simmons for organising the team. Player of the match went to Lauren Simmons for her gazelle

like interceptions and intelligent play. The team consisted of: Megan Lowe, Helen Sproston, Lauren Simmons, Saskia Eldridge-Hinmers, Bella Hill, Libby Hall, Georgie Crew and Sarah Phillips.

Badminton

Congratulations to the U16 badminton team, consisting of Alexandra Oprisan, Rebecca Sproston, Ruth Devapragasam, Roma Longster and Amy Longster, who have qualified for the county finals of the National Badminton Competition.

The U14 team have also qualified for this level and we look forward to following their progress next month.

Hockey The PE department are delighted to announce that hockey coach Dave

Goodfield has been selected for a central contract by GB Hockey for the new Olympic programme, hopefully culminating

in selection for Tokyo 2020. Dave will remain a part of the SWPS hockey staff and we wish him good luck and congratulations.

Dave is also representing Surbiton HC at the National Indoor Finals on Sunday 29 January at Wembley Arena, to which the PE department are taking a group of 40+ pupils (a few spaces left but be quick!). The school also has former pupil Melissa Ball representing Slough HC at the prestigious event.

The girls will also have the opportunity to meet and get autographs from Olympic GB gold medal winning squad.

DofE News SWPS was a hive of activity last Saturday as approximately 40 parent volunteers gathered for

their annual training day.

There was lots on offer – the new parent volunteers attended a workshop on Route Planning for Bronze and were shown emapping on the eDofE website. Other volunteers had the option to choose from Route Planning for Silver or First Aid which covered on how to deal with extreme

conditions and common injuries on the hill. An opportunity to look at Navigation Beyond Bronze was also available where more advanced navigation techniques were studied. Some of them then ventured onto Chobham Common to put into practice what they had learnt.

Minibus tests were carried out - we were lucky with the weather as it had tried to snow on Thursday evening! Hopefully a fun day was had by all and it was a chance for new parent volunteers to meet other members of the DofE community at SWPS to share their experiences, stories and knowledge.

Once again may I express my deep gratitude to this amazing group of people who support the DofE programme at SWPS and make it happen. A big Thank You to all those who gave up their Saturday to attend and, in particular to the volunteers who ran a training session and shared their expertise with others.
