Psychology in EnglishPsychology is a discipline whose goal is to understand and improve functioning of individuals, groups, and societies as a whole. Psychologists are interested in studying how people think, what they feel, and how they react in var-ious situations. Some psychologists deal with diagnosis and treatment of mental health issues, but psychological knowledge and skills are necessary in a number of profes-sions dealing with various challenges related to human mind and behavior. In other words, psychology graduates can pursue their careers in a variety of fields, including education, media, market research, marketing and adver-tising, healthcare, business, or IT research and design. After the reform of European higher education (the Bo-logna process) we offer three programs in Psychology. You can choose a three-year Bachelor Degree, a two-year Master Degree (together known as a 3+2 Program), or a 5-year long-cycle Master Degree, which is not divided into two stages.

‘3+2’ Program Bachelor’s Level – Six SemestersThe Bachelor’s program in Psychology includes courses in the fundamental areas of the field and covers basic principles in humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. The completion of this degree enables students to start a career in social services, counseling, human services, or community relations.

At the Bachelor’s level students do not choose any spe-cialization. This allows them to gain a thorough insight into general psychology and expand their knowledge in several areas of the discipline. The goal is to give them an edge on the fast-changing labor market, as this ap-proach makes them more attractive in the eyes of po-tential employers. A Bachelor’s program in Psychology covers the following modules:• Introductory Module• Foundations of Psychology• Bachelor’s Seminar• Major-specific (4 concentration areas)• Electives• Entrepreneurship • International Students in Intercultural and Multilin-

gual World• Foreign Language

Major-specific modules• Behavioral Studies

Behavioral Psychology is a growing branch of Psychol-ogy. Behavioral Psychology entails the comprehensive use of empirically validated principles of learning to develop, implement, and evaluate practical strategies that enhance the abilities and self-direction skills of children and adults in community, home, and educa-tional settings. The principles and procedures devel-oped within this behavioral framework have been suc-

cessfully applied in areas such as Clinical Psychology, traditional and special education, business, industrial safety, addiction, self-management, and rehabilitation.

• Conflict Resolution and ManagementConflicts are inherent to social interaction in families, communities, organizations and international rela-tions. Although conflicts are usually seen as highly destructive and counterproductive, they also hold a potential for development, change and growth. Con-flict dynamics, if well managed, are an essential part of social change, fostering adaptive social processes. The theory and practice of conflict resolution and lead-ership is focused on such conflict management pro-cesses, through the use of negotiations, mediations and coaching techniques, and basing on theory-based models of conflict dynamics. Hence, there is strong potential in Psychology for fostering an expertise in negotiation, mediation, coaching, communication and management among both scholars and conflict-man-agement practitioners.

• Mind Communication TechnologyPopularity and accessibility of eye-tracking methods has been rapidly growing in the last several years. Eye-trackers allow us to measure and record eye position and movement. They are used in basic psy-chological research, help design better web-pages or user-friendly computer programs, and even allow to build special communication systems for disabled. This course allows students to gain theoretical knowledge about eye-tracking research methods and its practi-cal applications including hands-on experience with equipment, software and data analysis.

• Cross-Cultural PsychologyPsychology of acculturation and economic migra-tions (Psychology of immigration and migrants’ acculturation, Contact with cultural diversity, Case

study: Cultural interview and report) Bilingualism and multicultural school education (Theory, types, and assessment of bilingualism, Experi-mental and psychometric assessment, Working with immigrant children in international schools) Cross-cultural management. Doing business in the East and the West (Dimensions of organizational cul-ture and leadership – A cross-cultural perspective, Case-studies on differences and conflicts in a multi-cultural company, Conflict management and consulta-tions in international corporations).

Psychology in English 3500 EUR/year

Master’s Level – Four SemestersThe Master’s program in Psychology is aimed at interna-tional students, coming from different paths of educa-tion, interested in studying human mind and behavior. Within the Master’s program in Psychology students are offered a choice of two specializations modules designed to deepen both their already acquired knowledge and practical skills. Depending on their choice of specializa-tion (Psychology of behavior change—Applied Behavior Analysis or Psychology of leadership—Conflicts, Crises and Cooperation) modules Methodology, Psychological diagnosis and Psychology as a profession are profiled to match with the specialization.Students choosing this program, but who hold their Bachelor’s degree in fields other than Psychology will be obliged to take additional compensatory modules (free of charge) from the field of Psychology.

Psychology of Leadership – Conflicts, Crises and Co-operationConflicts are inherent to social interaction in families, communities, organizations and international relations. Although conflicts are usually seen as highly destructive

ManagementA Bachelor’s program in Management is an interesting offer for all those who are passionate about the social side of organizational life and want to use their knowl-edge in the practice of management. Management is more than a craft. It is, in fact, an art which requires im-agination and intuition to spot opportunities that arise in the world around us. The main objective of the program is the  creation of leaders who can successfully face the complex and high-ly changeable world of business. It combines basic busi-ness knowledge such as human resources management, marketing, finance, economics, and law with a humanis-tic perspective dedicated to sustainability, diversity, and social responsibility.

Bachelor’s Program Six SemestersOur custom-designed program of study run entirely in English is targeted at a heterogeneous internation-al audience, and it provides a unique possibility to gain cross-cultural competence through everyday prac-tical experience of cultural diversity. The courses are taught in small groups, which guarantees a better con-tact with the teacher.

and counterproductive, they also hold potential for de-velopment, change and growth. Conflict dynamics, if well managed, are an essential part of social change, fostering adaptive social processes. The theory and prac-tice of conflict resolution and leadership is focused on such conflict management processes, through the use of negotiations, mediations and coaching techniques, and basing on theory-based models of conflict dynam-ics. Hence, there is strong potential in psychology for fostering expertise in negotiation, mediation, coaching, communication and management among both scholars and conflict-management practitioners.Psychology students can also choose to take up courses outside the discipline of Psychology, which undoubtedly makes their experience at SWPS truly interdisciplinary.

Clinical PsychologyClinical Psychology integrates science, theory, and prac-tice to understand, predict, and reduce maladjustment, disability, and distress as well as to support human adaptation, psychological well-being and personal de-velopment. Clinical psychology is a broad approach to human problems consisting of diagnosis, assessment, evaluation, consultation, treatment, prevention and research with regard to various populations, including children, adolescents, adults, the elderly, families, cou-ples and groups. Clinical psychologists work can range from prevention and early intervention of minor behav-ioral problems and difficulties in adjustment, through supporting individuals and couples undergoing crises, to dealing with and treating severely disturbed individ-uals with mental disorders, such as anxiety, depression and personality disorders. The program complies with scientist-practitioner model, emphasizing both clinical and research training. The goal of the Clinical Psycholo-gy Program is to provide training in both contemporary clinical science and clinical assessment and intervention,

as well as to prepare psychologists capable of serving in a wide range of professional contexts. As such, we are dedicated to broad and general training as the core of our curriculum, so that students acquire a broad founda-tion of clinical and research skills.

International Business RelationsInternational Business Relations is a unique program of study that combines three different perspectives: Inter-national Relations, Political Science, and International Economics, with a particular emphasis on business-re-lated skills. It is interdisciplinary in nature as it provides its graduates with  practical knowledge and compe-tences that are indispensable in international business, business- and finance-related sectors of public admin-istration, media, independent professions, international institutions and non-governmental organizations.Graduates from International Business Relations are ready and prepared to establish their own businesses, they know how to register charities, foundations or their own enterprises. They can analyze business documents, balance sheets and undertake complex market analyses. What is more, they are also knowledgeable in inter-national politics, business law, international law and marketing. They can perform in public, coordinate de-cision-making, explain complex financial problems (like the Eurozone crisis) and make speeches on, e.g. the fu-ture of capitalism. Last but not least, they know how to utilize information in databases, the Internet and other open sources, how to analyze this data and turn it into a practical tool for decision-making.

Bachelor’s Program – Six SemestersThe program of International Business Relations consists of three core elements and several modules, some of which overlap with and cut across other modules. Such a diversified offer makes the whole program of study much more interesting and attractive to current as well as prospective students.

• International Relations Core The core combines the elements of International Rela-tions with the elements of Political Science. It provides students with the most basic practical knowledge and more specialized modules.

• Economy and Business Core The core includes the theoretical and legal parts of the program and gives students the ability to write and analyze business documents, coordinate institutional decision-making and develop marketing strategies.

• Practice Core The core supplements the aforementioned cores by adding practical and interactive components and by showing how the acquired knowledge can be applied within all the core elements. This core also provides students with practical skills as they can learn the analysis of business data, legal documents, the use of databases and statistical programs as well as the simulation of negotiations, group conflict resolution, marketing and corporate identity.

The main aim of modules is to enable students to gain knowledge, abilities and social skills that are indispensa-ble in the studied field. Those three aspects are frequent-ly referred to as teaching effects, and they are subject to assessment. To achieve this goal, certain modules have been included in the program. • Theoretical Module

It is a combination of courses, lectures and seminars offered during the first year of studies in order to acquaint students with the basic features of Interna-tional Relations, Political Science and International Economics so that they can understand the remaining modules later on.

• European Integration Module It is strongly oriented toward economic issues con-nected with the business environment of the Common Market, European Monetary and Financial Integration and the Schengen Area. This will enable students to

find their way through the complex maze of the EU institutions, the legal framework of the EU and the jungle that is EU lobbying, think tanks, interest groups and other organizations which have grown up around the EU official institutions.

• Global Module It focuses on the provision of knowledge about global trends in business and politics in non-European areas, including international organizations and international financial regulations, emerging markets and new emerging powers. This module is supplemented by two elective modules.

• Elective ModulesThey concentrate either on cultural aspects of inter-national relations and business or on issues connected with politics and diplomacy. Depending on the stu-dents’ choice, they can take courses which deepen your knowledge on international cultural trends and cultural relations or international politics, including additional information about Poland’s and its neigh-bors’ political and economic systems and their exter-nal relations. The latter element has been introduced in order to prepare students for a career in Poland and its neighboring countries or for those students who wish to continue their studies at a Master’s level.

Starting from the fifth semester of the program, students are given a choice of specializations, each of which is de-signed for a specific group of professions. All specializa-tions are the response to students’ interests and to the re-quirements of the fast-changing labor market. All courses are delivered by highly experienced academic staff. International BusinessThis is the most general specialization. It provides an overview of current discussions on the development of the economy, the future of capitalism and globalization trends at an international level. It enables students to understand business information, the economic media and to take part in debates on macroeconomics.

International Project ManagementThis specialization prepares students for work in quick-ly-assembled working groups consisting of people from different ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds, which are brought together in order to carry out projects for a specific period of time and then disperse and work on other projects. Project Management requires par-ticular skills: the ability to communicate with unknown people, to cope with cultural diversity, to react quickly in situations where little information is available and to analyze this information rapidly without resorting to prej-udice. The skills acquired within this specialization enable graduates to carry out any international project and are not restricted to the requirements of one profession.International Tourism Management Here, the focus is placed on the knowledge, skills and competences needed in order to work in international tourism, from small agencies to large hotels, from the logistics of air transport to the political economy of mo-bility and migration. All courses, predominantly work-shops and seminars, are mostly interactive and practical and are conducted by specialists in the relevant field and practitioners who either used to work in their respective field until recently or have combined teaching with their professional work.

Why International Business Relations?International Business Relations is a program of study designed for practitioners.  It combines practical, busi-ness-oriented elements of International Relations, Po-litical Science and International Economics into a con-centrated package of knowledge and skills, which gives students a decisive advantage on the labor market. The program puts a particular emphasis on practice – students learn only what they can use in their future professional life.

Those who take up this path will learn about the history of trans-lation and about currents in translation that have been changing throughout the centuries. They expand their knowledge concerning translation methods and tech-niques, which they can later on use during numerous workshops. Our students work on texts from various en-vironments and thus get a taste of e.g. the language of law, medicine, business, commercials etc. Participation in this kind of classes enables them to determine their strong and weak points, and to see what particular kind of LSP (language for specific purposes) they feel com-fortable with. Furthermore, they have an opportunity to try interpreting, both simultaneous and consecutive. Un-der the supervision of well-qualified teachers and with the use of modern equipment, they deepen the myster-ies of oral translation and learn the tricks of the trade.

Teaching English as a Foreign LanguageWe offer a  large array of courses designed to expand our students’ knowledge as far as psycholinguistics, pedagogy and teaching methods are concerned. Those who take up this path will be shown how to approach students properly and thus they learn how to pass down

not only their knowledge, skills and abilities, but also their passion and devotion for teaching. They will be in-troduced to various approaches and teaching methods they can adopt so that the classes they later on give are found useful, attractive and interesting.

Communication in BusinessIn our specialization modules you will also find differ-ent kinds of communication: internal communication in organizations, external communication with the market and environment, marketing communication, your own, personal communication of your personal brand. We will also try to understand a significant role of Business Communication as a problem-solving activity.Extramural students of the Master’s Program may ob-tain the teaching certificate after completing the English Teaching as a Foreign Language specialization and a teaching internship.
