ABOUT CURTIN

Welcome to Curtin English Curtin started teaching English to international students in 1972, more than 40 years ago. Since then, we have taught tens of thousands of students. We understand that English is important for success in today’s global environment, whether you need English for work, travel or university study. Today’s English language teachers need language development and teaching methodologies which are appropriate to their context. Curtin English has a long track record of working successfully with English teachers to provide this. At Curtin English we focus on high quality teaching and a supportive learning environment. Our aim is to help you achieve your goals by developing your skills and giving you confidence in communicating in English. To help achieve this, we will give you lots of opportunities to use your English in class, around the beautiful city of Perth and on the campus of one of Australia’s largest and most dynamic universities. Curtin English is located on the beautiful campus grounds of Curtin University in sunny Perth, Western Australia. Our students share the campus with Australian and other international university students from over 100 countries. Participants on our programs have access to state-of-the-art facilities on campus, a range of student services and all the benefits that university students have. Our dedicated, highly trained staff are an integral part of our students’ success and provide ongoing support and guidance.

About Curtin University Curtin University’s main campus is located in Bentley, six kilometres south of the centre of Perth: Western Australia’s capital city. The Bentley Campus welcomes students from more than 100 countries across Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas, and is the largest university in Western Australia. Curtin’s international presence is highlighted throughout the Asia-Pacific region, with offshore campuses in Singapore, Sarawak and Sydney, as well as partnership agreements to offer courses at educational institutions in Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Indonesia. The University has developed strong, long-term partnerships with more than 400 institutions in 40 countries Curtin University prides itself on being recognised nationally and internationally for excellence in education and research. Curtin is a university with a global outlook with more than 46,000 students studying all over the world. This includes over 10,000 international students from 120 countries studying at our Perth, Sydney and other Australian locations. Curtin is one of only two Western Australian universities to rank in the prestigious Shanghai Jiao Tong Annual Ranking of World Universities (2011) and Times Higher Education's 2011-2012 world university rankings. The 2012 Quacuarelli Symonds World Universities Ranking by Subject have listed Curtin among the top 200 universities in the world across nine categories, up from five in 2011. The school of Education was one of 5 from Curtin which were in the top 100. Curtin's MBA program was rated 46 in the world by The Economist in 2012, and one of the top three in Australia.

The Campus The suburb of Bentley, located about six kilometres south-east of central Perth, is home to Curtin's main campus. In close proximity to everything Perth has to offer, it boasts 116 hectares of bold architecture nestled amongst beautifully landscaped gardens. With thousands of students filling the campus grounds every day of semester, there's a real vibrancy to the place. Over the past decade the campus has undergone some major changes, with a variety of stunning modern buildings now interspersed with the original 1960s architecture.

About Perth With more than 200 nationalities, international visitors are welcomed to Perth and enjoy many of its attractions during their stay: sunny blue skies; a comfortable climate; popular bars and restaurants; all types of shops and services; cinemas, theatres and music venues; international food courts; lively markets; sports facilities; excellent public transport; plus many more. The largest Australian state, Western Australia maintains strong relationships with neighbouring countries and is a gateway to Asian cities. Perth’s Central Business District is the commercial centre of the city. Fast-paced and multicultural, the district provides opportunities for sightseeing and shopping, and includes attractions such as the Barrack Street Bell Tower—one of the largest musical instruments in the world—and the majestic Kings Park Botanical Gardens; the largest inner city park in the world. Perth’s coastline comprises a long stretch of clear beaches: one of the city’s major attractions. Collectively known as the Sunset Coast, Perth’s beaches are also popular swimming, surfing and snorkeling destinations, with a variety of cafés, restaurants and pubs located nearby. With more hours of sunshine than any other Australian capital city, Perth’s beaches are enjoyed for most of the year. Just a 20 minute drive from the city centre, Fremantle is a popular port city known for its high-quality seafood restaurants and weekend markets. Fremantle is also home to the ‘cappuccino strip’, which boasts an array of unique shops, street performances, alfresco dining and restaurants. The Fremantle Prison, which reopened as a public museum after it closed as a prison in 1991, hosts exciting daily and nightly tours around the grounds. In recent years, Western Australia has strengthened its economy despite global challenges that have threatened other countries. The state’s mining and resource industry continues to thrive, with major projects underway between Australia and China. In 2010, the value of WA’s mining and petroleum industry reached A$70.9 billion, with this growth set to continue..curtin.au/about-perth.cfm

Perth is the capital city of Western Australia and is recognised internationally for offering an amazing standard of living to both its visitors and residents.

CAPABILITY STATEMENT Not only is Curtin English on the campus of the Western Australia’s largest and most diverse University; Curtin University, Curtin English is also one of the biggest and longest running English language centres in Australia.

Our Teaching staff Curtin English employs over 20 Full time teachers of English. All the our teachers are qualified English language professionals who have specialised teaching qualifications in addition to a university degree. A number of staff have postgraduate qualifications and some are engaged in further language-related research. Our staff have extensive experience teaching English in Australian and overseas universities and educational institutes. Curtin English runs a regular professional development program for our teaching staff, ensuring that they are always engaged in further learning and self-development and that their skills are always upto date. The Centre is also accredited by the National ELICOS Association of Australia (NEAS) for the teaching of English as a foreign language.

Our Student body At any one time, approximately we have approximately 300 to 400 participants in our programs at Curtin English from a diverse range of nationalities. Students make friends from all over the world and practise their English skills in and outside the classroom. Australia’s proximity to Asia and the Middle East ensures a wide diversities of nationalities and cultures, our traditional links with Europe also add to the mix, and with South America being a new and emerging market. The percentage of Spanish speakers at Curtin and in Perth is relatrively small.

Buddy system Our buddy system sees new students pair up with current students in their class on the first day. This system ensures that students’ have someone to show them around, ask questions and make friends.

Class representative A class representative is nominated in each class, and once a module all class represntatives and Curtin English management meet to discuss class progress, issues and share information. Its an effective way for students’ to have their voices heard and to disemminate information from management into the student body.
