JUNE / JULY 2013

With so much happening during February and March, followed by the Easter holidays, we decided to plan our annual sausage braai in Jonkershoek for a little later this year, namely the 24th April. Naturally, we were rather worried about the weather and breathed a sigh of relief when the day dawned warm and sunny. As usual, Therese had organised everything to perfection and there were plenty of Cervelats and Bratwürste (generously donated by Beat and Martha Reichmuth - thank you so much!), salads and desserts for all the ladies, several husbands (who kindly saw to the braaing once again) as

well as for the musicians. Yes, we were treated to quite a concert by our compatriots with singing and yodelling not only in Swiss, but also in German and Afrikaans. They even played and sang “Happy Birthday…” to myself, whose round birthday it was that day, and Susi Gurtner, who was also going to have a round birthday two days later. Thank you guys, we much appreciate your contribution! All in all, a wonderful day’s outing, thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.Agathe Trengrove-Vatter

PRESI REPORT

task, which was tackled by Roger,Hans & Renewith the most astonishing results, which more and more visitors seem to have noticed by now !!

The Tamboerskloof Swiss Tennis Club is a further example of not giving up, when ‘the chips are down’ !! After having been ‘shown the door’ at their long-standing courts at the old club-area, Juergen Aiff and his team, together with the commendable support from the City of Cape Town, have found a new home in Tamboerskloof, which is certainly worth a visit !!

To get back to the ‘Mile-Stone’; 90 years of existence, whether for an individual or a club, calls for a Big Celebration.This will be held in form of an early Luncheon on Sunday, 2nd June 2013 at our Club-House from 11.00hrs onwards, starting with a glass of ‘bubbly’ and some snacks, followed by a sit-down-affair; (By now this will have been com-municated to you via News-Flash and/or personal Invites).During this occasion, you will also meet with our new caterer, Daniel Obrist, who, by then, will have taken over the responsibilities of running the Swiss & Austrian Social Club, mainly on the catering-side. (A resume of Daniel’s career can be found elsewhere in this news-letter.)At that point, I would like to thank my wife , Moira, for stepping in for the past 2 ½ months as the interim-caterer, following Martin’s departure back to Germany.

DEAR CLUB-MEMBERS AND FRIENDS OF THE SWISS SOCIAL & SPORTS CLUB.

Our recently staged Mothers-Day – Luncheon was a most pleasing event, attended by some 86 guests, who were treated to a lovely spread of soups, roasts and stews, not to forget an array of des-serts. Thanks again to all our guests and staff, who made this day such a special occasion.

Staying with special events;...........Please take note of our programme for the 1st August National-Day Celebra-tions;A formal Luncheon will be held on ‘The Day’ to which bookings are essential;

On the following Saturday,3/8, we will again celebrate in ‘ Fescht-Huette’ – Style from 14.00hrs onwards; (for both events please refer to the separate information sent to you.)Finally, and eventually, a hearty ‘wel-come’ to our new ‘kids-on-the-block’ , Nadine and Nicole, who have taken over the Membership- & Treasurer – Portfo-lios from Andre and Annette resp.;

We want to wish them their best of luck and support in their new function.Talking of Membership,............ did you pay yours ???

In closing, our best wishes go to our Ex-Vice President, Stefan Ruesi, for a steady recovery –We’ve got lot’s of plans for you, my boy !!

Kind regardsStefan – Your Presi

As we are approaching another ‘mile-stone’ in our club’s distinguished his-tory, I would like to dwell a moment on the past achievements, which must be recognized even more, when consid-ering the relatively small community of the Swiss in the Cape; much larger representations of ‘expats’ have not been able to maintain the momentum of the past years , yet the Swiss have continued to go forward and to reach for higher grounds.

When I speak of achievements, I don’t only refer to the material ‘things’, which the club was able to create; I rather speak of the ability to have maintained a togetherness over so many years amongst a large number of members, who are still going strong, albeit at a ‘slower pace’ !!I see them as an example for our youth, which we are so sorely missing at the club, considering the fact that the ma-jority of our members has passed the age of 65 !!Therefore, it is my committee’s main-objective to create a stimulus, which will interest our younger generation to fol-low their forefathers in many aspects.

The more visible achievements revolve around the continuing development of our joint Club-House in Green Point, which offers a most attractive out-side area and a soon to be completed “Alpenstuebli”, which can be used for Card-Playing, Private functions or just an ‘overflow’ during larger events. (subject to availability) The up-grade of Jonkershoek has been a monumental

“ A Big Thank You ”

- to Pascal Kilchenmann for sponsoring the necessary ceiling-alterations at our club-house, to accommodate the newly installed ‘heating/cooling-system’- to Sepp Grueter, for providing the Electricity - Supply for same

- to Roger Huber & CH Woodwork for all they have done, in order to make our ‘Alpenstuebli’ more ‘gemuetlich’- to Ruth Frey, for the making - up of the new Table-Cloths for same

goes to the following members:

Your contribution towards our Club is truly appreciated.Your Committee

SABINE - OUR NEW SWISS CONSULATE

After 4 years at the Swiss Embassy in Washington DC , I have just arrived here in Cape Town to take up my new assignment as  Consul with my husband Nick. I am replacing Mrs. Marianne Jenni who returned to Switzerland to take up a new position in Bern.  Our two children, Thomas (19) and Oliver (17)  are studying in the United Kingdom but will visit us regularly.I am originally from Estavayer-Le-Lac / FR and my husband is British. Before Washington DC, I was posted in Bern, Cyprus, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, France, Australia and Liberia.After a long Washington winter, we were welcomed to this beautiful city with some magnificent weather, and we both continually marvel at the glorious views everywhere we look. The friendliness of the Capetonians we have already met confirms just what a special place this is.I am looking forward to meeting you personally and truly hope of a fruitful collaboration.

MESSAGE FROM THE CONSULATE GENERAL TO OUR SOUTH AFRICAN FRIENDS I would like to inform you of a new visa procedure for South Africans travelling to Switzerland from June 2013. On 11 October 2011 the Schengen member states introduced the Visa Information System VIS. The representations of the Schengen member states will be gradually connected to the system region by region. The VIS will also be used to store the biometric data of visa applicants. As of June 6, 2013 the Consulate General of Switzerland in Cape Town will capture the biometric data (10 fingerprints and the facial image) of all visa applicants from the age of 12 years. The other visa requirements remain the same. This means that all visa clients have to apply in person. In order to facilitate the procedure, the Consulate General will introduce an appointment system from June 6, 2013. For further visa information, please visit our website:  www.eda.admin.ch/capetown or contact us directly at 021 400 75 00 extension 4 from Monday to Thursday 14h00-16h00

CATERING

Born 1967 in Switzerland I emigrated to South Africa in 1979 with my parents where I finished my schooling up to and including matric .After two years National service proceeded to study at the Witwatersrand Hotel School for a national higher diploma in Hotel Management through the Sun International hotel group.Thereafter I joined the ranks of different hotel groups in positions climbing from Assistant Food and Beverage Manager to General Manager.In early 2000 I took over the reigns of a film catering company (Status Catering) which catered for Commercials as well as Local and International Feature films which included catering from 20 to 1500 people on location.Always wanting to open up my own business I decided to get started by getting my own “Swiss Wurstbude” built. This meant travelling to Concerts and Festivals in South Africa which I did for 3years.With the cash earned I opened up the “Swiss Deli and Bistro” in St Helena Bay, specialising in Swiss-German cuisine, of which I am Owner/Chef for the past 3 years.Having established The Swiss Bistro successfully, a need for growth as well as for personal reasons I am now looking to relocate to Cape Town. I believe taking over the Swiss-Austrian Club Restaurant would be the perfect opportunity for both parties to grow the Club and the “Swiss-Austrian “ Heritage and making the Restaurant a culinary Landmark in Cape Town.
