DRAFT COMMITTEE REPORT

Draft enthusiasts were looking forward to three spring draft trials and unfortunately two of the three were cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.

However, the C&P draft test in mid-April went off without a hitch and we have three swissies with new draft titles: •Laurie Carmody’s Ch

Matterhorn's As The Crow Flies JHD (Raven) earned both her Novice Draft Dog and Draft Dog titles•Ch Matterhorn's Mnemosyne, TT, WPD (Lauri Carmody’s Windy) earned her Novice Draft Dog title•Mary and Clinton Spaar earned a Novice Draft Dog title with Ch Matterhorn's Stealth Bomber, NWPD, RN (Lester)•Karen Pyle is one leg closer to earning the Master Draft Dog title with Tremor, CH Bries'way Aftershock RN, CD, DD, WPDX, VGS.The recognized regional clubs and GSMDCA have several draft tests planned for this fall starting with the National Specialty test on September 12, 2012.

Next there are three tests scheduled for October…the first two in Ohio on Friday, October 12th & Saturday, October 13th as part of Crooked River’s SwissAthlon and the third in Georgia on Friday, October 26th as part of Southbound’s Swissypalooza.  And, last but not least C & P is planning a three-day draft test November 10 - 12, 2012 in Maryland.

It should be a busy and exciting fall for anyone with draft dogs!  If you have been thinking about getting your dog started…there is no better time than the present.  Give these wonderful working dogs a job (and their original job at that) and they will thank you for it.  They love to work and make you happy and drafting is a great way to have fun with them.

As always, if you need any help on how to get started please feel free to email me

OBEDIENCE REPORTTimes they are a’changin’ and to keep up, we have to change with them! The big change to affect obedience is that the GSMDCA Awards committee is not receiving the AKC Awards magazine each month, and is only

getting that report yearly now. What does this mean to us? It means that the

obedience committee is not receiving notice of the obedience titles earned on Swissys every month or two.

What does this mean to you? That you won’t receive your recognition patch in a timely manner if we wait for the yearly report. And should we await the yearly report, we would be sending out a flurry-a bucket load- no, a humongous number of patches all at once, around the holiday time… a bad time to mail, and a busy time to work on something of this importance. Right?

So, how to solve this? Easy- peezy!! When you earn an obedience or tracking title (not including Rally at this time) with your Swissy, after you’ve enjoyed your celebratory dinner and drinks, and your Swissy has enjoyed his/her special treat, simply e-mail me at [email protected] about your

accomplishment (or any of the committee, who will be happy to pass it along to me). This is what I need: 1) Your dogs AKC registration #, your dogs full registered name including titles, 2) your name as the owner 3) the date you finished your title, and if you include your USPS mailing address, I won’t have to look it up.

Please feel free to brag to the Swissy-L as well if you subscribe, but email me just in case I miss it on the list. The obedience patches are super nice, and it’s an awesome perk that is only available to club members!

See you at the NS in Loveland this September! Meanwhile, keep on heeling!

~Chris Lero (Chair), Sandi Snyder, Deb Meno, and Katie Peckenpaugh.

ABOUT DOGS..."In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semihuman. The

point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog."    -Edward Hoagland

ELLEN BERGFELD !GOVERNMENT LIAISON REPORTThe United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)/Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) are recommending changes to the federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA) regulations which affect “Retail Pet Stores and Licensing Exemptions”. Comments on the proposal will be accepted by APHIS through July 16, 2012.The proposed changes have the potential to significantly impact GSMDCA breeders. All interested parties are encouraged to review the proposed rule and offer comment. Click here to view the proposed rule. Click here to view a USDA Fact Sheet about the proposed rule.

Background: The AWA exempts from federal licensing and regulations “retail pet stores”, which are defined as anyone selling puppies directly to a final customer for use as pets. It is this exemption that enables most small or hobby breeders to currently avoid being licensed and regulated by the USDA.The new proposed rule rescinds the exempt “retail pet store” status of anyone selling pets at retail to buyers who do not physically enter the breeder’s facilities in order to personally observe the animals available for sale prior to purchase and/or to take custody of the animals after purchase. The primary purpose of this rule is to regulate breeders who sell puppies online. The changes in the rule mean that breeders or others who sell puppies sight unseen, by any means, would now be regulated by USDA. The proposed rule also increases from three to four the number of a breeding females that a person may maintain on his or her premises and be exempt from the licensing and inspection requirements in the AWA, regardless of how the offspring are sold. The AKC has a number of concerns, including:In many cases, geographic distance makes it difficult for a purchaser to personally visit or pick up the puppy at the breeder’s kennel. Such scenarios are particularly common for breeders and fanciers of rare breeds and others who may be purchasing a second pet from the same breeder or already have an established relationship with a breeder. Requiring such individuals to comply with regulations designed for large commercial may not be appropriate. The term “breeding female” is not defined. It is unclear at what age a female dog might be considered a “breeding female”. The AKC believes, based on its own experience in kennel inspections and breeding operations that the Regulatory Impact Analysis provided in the proposed rule vastly underestimates both the number the of individuals who will be impacted and the expense to occasional breeders to establish commercial-level facilities.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: The USDA is seeking constructive comment on the proposed rule or alternatives to the recommendations. As of publication time, the June AKC Delegate Meeting Minutes were not posted so the link will appear in the next e-SENN. In the meantime, the following description is a distillation of the delegate committee meetings I attended on Monday and the actual delegate meeting on Tuesday.

The final reading of two items occurred and will be voted on at the September meeting:1. Three-point major reserve at a National Specialty. You have to have double the number of dogs (for

the region) for a 5 point major in order to award a 3 point major for the Reserve Dog. The same thing applies to Bitches. Reserve does NOT go on to the breed ring. Each Parent Club opts in/out. I think this will pass. It missed by 10 votes last time so they added the opt in/out clause.

2.Change the number of delegate meetings from 4 to 3. The June meeting would be eliminated. The current March meeting would move to April and September to August so there are an equal number of months between meetings. The Spring meeting has to be held in the New York area (usually Newark) as stated in the by-laws. December's meeting is in conjunction with Eukanuba, wherever it is held. The fall meeting would most likely be in Raleigh. I am in favor of this idea, but I think it will be soundly defeated for a number of reasons

3.Also up for a September vote are 4- and 3- year terms for various delegate committees. Committee meetings are held the day before the delegate meeting and are very informative. If our club ever hopes to have representation on one of these committees, we will have to change our bylaws to allow someone to serve longer than 6 years. It takes 2-3 years just to get to know enough folks that you might get enough votes. And then you have to be around long enough to serve. Our 6 year limit would not make that possible. Something to think about the next time the board makes changes to the bylaws.

At Monday’s committee meetings we learned about the following:1.A number of changes to Judges Education have been made and are still forthcoming. Testing

requirements seem to be the biggest one. Mary Beth, our Judge’s Education chair is on top of this. Because of so many delegate questions, AKC said they will clarify what needs to be done and when and send another communication.

2.Evidently, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is sending friendly letters and e-mails to parent clubs and others about the dangers of puppy mills, how wonderful breeders are, etc.; very friendly and complimentary. I have attached a short letter from AKC--they are asking anyone who receives such a communication to send it to Lisa at AKC. They want to respond with one voice.

3.I think many of you have seen the petition AKC is circulating for the proposed federal changes regulating breeders. If you would like to see the petition, please click Join With the AKC to Protect Responsible Small Breeders

4.AKC's financial situation is getting better. We had a positive report for the first time in many months. All event entries are increasing. From OB, to Rally; Earth dog to lure coursing--participation is up. And agility is way up! For the first time ever, there were over 1 million entries in conformation for the first 4 months of the year, up 7.5% from last year at the same time.

Finally, thank you for allowing me to serve as your AKC Delegate. I always learn something new and update our board whenever possible. And I enjoy giving you my perspective in this column.

SCONE ReportThis spring SCONE had numerous events. First up was our specialty, which was held in conjunction with the Pioneer Valley Kennel Club

Upcoming early summer events, well, we just have one, I primitive hike up Mt. Moriah in Northern New Hampshire. Not for the faint of hearted, 3000 feet of elevation gain, but I’m sure it will be a great time.

The SCONE club is working on out fall schedule now, so far we have our annual fall fun day in Pepperell, MA and a pack on the following Sunday at Beaver Brook scheduled for the first weekend in October.

Our other scheduled fall events are a pack hike on Long Island the first weekend in December and another pack hike the second weekend in December in Western Massachusetts.

GREATER SWISS MOUNTAIN DOG CLUB OF THE ROCKIESThe GSMDCR is getting ready to be your host at the 2012 National and Regional Specialty shows in

September 2012. Swissies from all over the country and Canada will be in abundance for the Rocky Mountain Round Up in Loveland for an entire week!

In preparation for the show the club has been selling some great Swissy Swag for dogs and humans! Visit the store at www.gsmdcr.com and shop away! Do not let your dog be the only one without a fancy bandana…and don’t try to attend the Draft Trial without a nice stadium blanket to sit on! We can help….

We have also started our summer social season and what a season it will be. Our first soiree was a party in the rain with about 25 dogs! Neither human nor dog minded the rain and fun was had by all. Dogs ranged from 9 weeks to almost 10 years! The humans, well we ranged in age too :) On June 16th we will have our Summer Pool Party for all the non-swimming swissies! Later in June we will have a house party at Cornerstone!!! The fun continues as we build up our tolerance for the main event in September!

See you all in September!

The SwissAthlon is making a return for 2012 – this three day working event will be changing venues and will take place at the Fralick’s farm in London, OH (about 20 minutes west of Columbus).  Mark your calendars for Friday, October 12th – Sunday, October 14th.  Two draft trials, two weight pulls, two pack hikes, and two days of all-breed conformation (just 30 minutes away) will make for a very busy but fun-filled weekend!  Plus, we will be having group dinners on Friday & Saturday evenings and everyone is welcome to stay on-site (camping

outside or bring a cot & sleeping bag and stay in the heated garage).  Lots of opportunities to earn working titles, conformation points, and/or just enjoy time with old friends and meeting new friends! We hope you will join us in October!” Thanks-Kim

Awards Report - June 2012I’m in the final stages of the awards program for the upcoming 2012 Awards Banquet. If I missed any

titles during the last 2 years, please send me an email so I can make sure everything is current. If your awards have not made it to the Senn then they are not in the database. It is your responsibility

to provide the Appointed Chairs with the appropriate documentation for non-AKC awarded titles (weight pull, drafting, AHBA herding, pack hikes).

Thank you for your cooperation,

-Tracy

Beaver Brook Pack HikeApril, 28 & 29, 2012By Peter ZieglerWe were blessed with perfect weather on our 7th annual two day Beaver Brook pack hike. The trails where in good shape and we finished the hike both days in record time. Some of the dogs could not resist jumping in the water to cool off at some of the resting stops along the trail. Two teams did complete the 2 day, 8 mile back to back hike and three teams did the 1 day, 10 mile hike.CH Matterhorn's Prism Catch Me (Nala) with Mike Warburton as the handler owned by Mike Meorath, finished the last leg (10 miles) for her NWPD title. On behalf of everybody I would like to congratulate Nala for her hard earned title. The following teams completed the hike to earn one or two legs towards the WPD title:Matterhorn's Last Dance (Hailey) with Peter Ziegler as the handler owned by Laurie Carmody, completing two legs.Matterhorn's Mr. Goodbar (Molson) with Chris Powell as the handler and owner, completing 1 leg.The following teams completed one or two legs towards the NWPD title:Frecajo's Ace of Base (Fender) with Kelly Nevin as the handler and owner, completing two legs.Matterhorn's Stealth Bomber (Lester) with Mary Spaar as the handler and owner, completing one leg.

Needless to say, everybody was a winner and after all the hiking you would expect that all the dogs would be tired. Not so, after we got back to my house the dogs run around like crazy with some other Swissies like Seamus, Titan and my new Puppy Baril, which did not attend the hike. We also had my daughter Christina and her friend Jon Welch with Yakuti, a Rhodesian Ridgeback joining us to cheer on the teams.I am looking forward to the next year hike and I hope we will get more people to join us.
