Gazette! Page One GUIDED TOUR AT A REAL LOCAL RADIO STATION Olivia is the General Manager at KDVS Radio 90.3 FM in Davis, and she invited us over for a guided tour of the station! She is also one of the on-air hosts, and we listened to her bluegrass set on the drive across town. The station has been on the air since the early 1960’s, and it started as a dorm project from a couple of enterprising students. The logistics of this trip were a bit challenging because the day was rainy, the campus was busy, and there was a lot of construction going on. When it was time for the tour, Olivia had to come out and help us because we had trouble locating an entrance to the downstairs station that was accessible for us. She showed us to the secret elevator, and her tour was fascinating! We got to see all the inner workings of the station and their vast music collection. Did you know that they have the largest collection of vinyl and CD records West of the Mississippi? We all had a great time, and Maricella was especially impressed. She told Ken that it was one of the best days of her life. She never thought that she’d get to see the inside of a real radio station, and she felt like she was in a dream! Thanks, Olivia! HEALTH FAIR IN CARMICHAEL The Mission Oaks Community Center held this free event featuring over fifty vendors, complete with health screenings, door prizes, fitness demonstrations, and a healthy food show! We all came away with big bags full of fun promotional items and tasty samples. After we toured all the informative booths, we sat down to enjoy the cooking show: Healthy Living Recipes by Executive Chef Josh Quinto. Using locally sourced, organic ingredients, he showed us how to make a farm-to-fork Spring Chicken Salad Sandwich with Asparagus Pesto and a Mixed Berry Salad drizzled with Honey, White Balsamic, and Thyme Vinaigrette. Best of all, we got to eat all the flavorful food when he was done. GUIDED TOUR AT A REAL LOCAL RADIO STATION Olivia is the General Manager at KDVS Radio 90.3 FM in Davis, and she invited us over for a guided tour of the station! She is also one of the on-air hosts, and we listened to her bluegrass set on the drive across town. The station has been on the air since the early 1960’s, and it started as a dorm project from a couple of enterprising students. The logistics

of this trip were a bit challenging because the day was rainy, the campus was busy, and there was a lot of construction going on. When it was time for the tour, Olivia had to come out and help us because we had trouble locating an entrance to the downstairs station that was accessible for us. She showed us to the secret elevator, and her tour was fascinating! We got to see all the inner workings of the station and their vast music

collection. Did you know that they have the largest collection of vinyl and CD records West of the Mississippi? We all had a

great time, and Maricella was especially impressed. She told Ken that it was one of the best days of her life. She never

TWO NEW CLIENTS! Cousins Larry and Anthony joined the ACE-IT I

Program this month. Welcome, guys!

FUN COOKIE FLOPS We found an interesting “hole-in-the-wall” Chinese bakery downtown, just around the corner from the Fox & Goose Pub. The place is called New World

Bakery, and they specialize in making fresh fortune cookies on-site. We watched all the automated machines form, bake, and fold the cookies right

before our eyes. They sell Fortune Cookie Flops at only $1.25 for a large bag. These are slightly

imperfect “seconds” that didn’t get folded correctly, but taste just as delicious. On our way back to the bus, we enjoyed the large fox & goose sculptures!

DOUBLE WINNERS: STEPHANIE’S STUMPERS Due to a computer glitch, some folks received last month’s

newsletter much later than others so, in the interest of fairness, we’re giving out two prizes. Josh and Kelijo both got the right

answer: “Pie”, from the Recipe Research article on Page Three. We’ve also decided to make a change going forward. Starting this month, the quiz winner will be ineligible the following month (you can win every other month). This will spread the wealth around.

HONEY BOO BOO! Stephanie's adorable large dog, Honey, inadvertently caused an accident while playing with Stephanie and her fiancé,

Ivan. Honey got excited when Ivan moved toward her and she crashed full-force into

Stephanie's knee. Stephanie said that it didn’t actually hurt much at first, but it

really stiffened up overnight and she had to stay home and ice it for awhile. Honey felt bad about it, but Stephanie doesn’t

blame her. Who could be mad at that face?

WARM WATER THERAPY After our cold and rainy March weather,

we’ve been enjoying the pool groups even more in April. Every Wednesday, we take a busload of people to enjoy the exercise and stretching classes at the Easter Seals Warm

Water Therapy Pool. Splash time, baby!

Stephanie’s Stumpers!

Put on your thinking cap and your smarty pants and win a $10 gift certificate!

This month’s newsletter has gone to the animals! How many

different kinds of animal species are mentioned throughout

this month’s newsletter?

Just the number of different kinds of animals will do, but if

you feel inclined to name them all, you’ll get an extra kudos!

Be the first to email or call ACE IT I at

916-564-6117 and let us know the answer and you will fatten

your wallet with a $10 gift certificate! IMPORTANT NOTE: Rule change starting this month. The

winner of the previous month’s quiz is ineligible for the

following month.

SPLISH-SPLASH THEATER REHEARSALS We’ve been hard at work practicing our new Disney-themed show,

which includes favorite songs from The Little Mermaid, Pocahontas, Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and Mary Poppins!

GREAT PRANK! On the first day of April, Ken arrived a few minutes early and, when he tried to clock in, found that his computer cursor was frozen in place

and the mouse unresponsive. After some suitable expletives and fiddling with it for a few moments, he turned it over and found the

infrared emitter covered up with a sticker which read, “APRIL FOOLS!” As other staff arrived, they all fell victim to the same joke. At first, we suspected Stephanie, but she was also pranked. Next on our list of

suspects was Niki, but she denied all involvement. Stephanie has been asking around, and nobody has yet claimed responsibility. We just

want to give credit where credit is due for this hilarious practical joke.

You got us good! WHO IS THE MASTER PRANKSTER?

SHRIMP AND VEGETABLE PASTA We started by washing and chopping our fresh parsley, broccoli, spinach, red bell peppers, and tomatoes. Then, we boiled a big

pot of water and started simmering our fettuccini. Next, we made a savory sauce featuring cream, freshly shredded parmesan

cheese, and our own secret mix of spices. Finally, we tossed in the shrimp, stirred it together, and served it up hot. Yummy!

NEW STAFF PERSON Community Skills Trainer Vera is the

latest addition to our growing and very talented team here at ACE-IT I. She has been welcomed with open arms, and we

look forward to seeing what special interests she’ll be sharing with us. She arrives with a warm, bubbly personality

and seems to have a calming influence on everyone. As you can see by her picture,

even cute puppies approve of her!

Welcome, Vera!

SPRING HAS SPRUNG AT THE FARM We went to visit Meridian Jacobs in Vacaville. Jacob sheep are an unusual breed with black patches all over their wool. Both male and female adults often have two sets of horns: one set pointing upward and another set curling down. We were greeted by Robin and her friend Lisa, along with their enthusiastic Border Collies, Ginny and Rusty. Robin and

Ginny gave us a fascinating sheepherding demonstration, and then it was time to pet the baby lambs. They were so cute! We also met some chickens, and a donkey named Amaryllis. We stayed for lunch while Robin gave us an

interesting wool-spinning demonstration. Thanks, Robin!

SPECIAL TRAINING SEMINAR: CLIENT SAFETY IN THE WORKPLACE

Robin from Cal-OSHA came and presented a very special two-hour training about safety and accident prevention in the workplace. The seminar was specifically geared toward client employees doing paid vocational work through our program, but anyone interested was encouraged to attend, especially those who do volunteer work with us! Robin was a very warm

and engaging speaker who kept all of the varied subjects interesting. She managed to keep everyone involved through the use of interactive Power-Point presentations, lively question-and-answer sessions, and even a fun,

raucous game of Labor Law Bingo with yummy prizes! Everyone who signed up for the class did both a Pre-Test and Post-Test Evaluation, and Robin will be mailing us the official Completion Certificates suitable for

framing. Thanks for your time, Robin. We loved it!
