His contributions to the community are many. John and his wife Virginia came from California to Arizona in 1985 and moved into SVE in 1992. John had been in charge of Bingo at Carriage Manor and assumed that job here soon after moving in. He faithfully managed the games in our Auditorium every Sunday night for more than 17 years. Over those years, profits from the weekly games were used to provide many extras needed to improve and beautify our community. Some of these items included exercise equipment, sound systems, paint and carpeting, landscaping, patio furniture, a flagpole and many others that were paid for out of bingo profits. In all, nearly $225,000 was earned for SVE during the years John ran the bingo game. John cared for Virginia thru many months of illness before she died in March, but he never missed tending to his Sunday night job. After her death, he decided it was time to pass it on to someone else, and even found his own replacements. He knew who would do the best job filling his shoes. John was to be honored for his many years of service on June 13, but unfortunately he was hospitalized and the award was accepted by his daughter Vivian. Sadly, on June 22, John succumbed to a brain tumor. I personally recall one evening during a cribbage game when it was very hot in the card room. There was just no air moving and someone commented that ceiling fans sure would help. Within a couple of weeks, John had obtained approval from the Board and the needed fans were installed. He saw a need and took care of it. Virginia Stockton, a long time friend of the McFalls, says about John that he enjoyed golf, all kinds of cards and heading Bingo. Another thing he really enjoyed was her homemade ice cream each summer. Fran and Ray Boushley knew John better than most, and spent lots of fun times together at slot tournaments in Laughlin and playing cards till all hours. He loved his cards and he loved to party. Some thought he was quiet, and a man of few words, but when he said something he meant it and you didn’t argue with him. He was dedicated to this community and showed it through all his hard work by running Bingo, arranging bus trips and starting some of the card groups. When his wife died, he was a lost man. Although we will miss him, we are happy to know that he is where he wants to be, by the side of his one true love Virginia. Pat Chumbley, SVE Board President said, “Several times I attended the meeting with John and the State Bingo Auditor. I was very proud when she said that it was never necessary to spend much time here because John keeps very accurate books. John and Virginia both set a record for the amount of money they raised and the dedication with which they served this community.” Vic Gastell tells that more than seven years ago when he was alone, John suggested he come and give him a hand at Bingo. Little did Vic know, that he would be there helping out through the end of John’s life. There were a lot of laughs and an opportunity to meet good co-workers and many bingo players Taft Jenkins, a golfing buddy says “The John McFall I knew was a man who enjoyed life to the fullest. He loved his golf, he enjoyed gambling and he loved to have a good time with good friends. On the golf course he was all business, no fooling around. CHAPEL NOTESLaura Paulsen

The fi rst Worship Service held in Sunland Village East was November 4, 1990. We will be celebrating this 20th anniversary of the Chapel the fi rst Sunday in November 2010. Pastor Wyn Olson has been the pastor of our Chapel since that fi rst Sunday. He has chosen to retire on this anniversary date after completing 20 years of service. His last worship service as our Pastor will be October 31.

Our Search Committee has been interviewing candidates for a pastor who will meet the needs of our Chapel. This process will take careful consideration. Therefore, we have arranged to appoint an Interim Pastor for six months from November 2010 through the end of

April 2011. We are pleased that Pastor Larry Fox, son-in-law of Pastor Wyn and Ginger Olson, has agreed to fi ll this position. Larry and his wife, Sheryl, have become friends of our chapel during their winter visits to SVE. Their home is in Warsaw, Ohio.

On Sunday, November 7, as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of our chapel, we will also pay tribute to Pastor Wyn Olson for his many years of dedication and service to this community. Through his direction, the Chapel congregation has grown from less than 30 in the beginning to presently 350 or more in the winter months and approximately 160 in the summer months. We have been blessed to have Pastor Olson shepherd the SVE

Chapel congregation.Pastor Fox will be installed as our

Interim Pastor and will begin his fi rst worship service on November 7. Pastor Olson will continue in the position of Pastor Emeritus.

The Village Chapel is a nondenominational service held every Sunday at 9 a.m. in the Village Auditorium. Residents, family, and friends from other communities are welcome.

We have excellent musicians and traditional hymns sung by the choir. Pastor Olson is strictly a Bible teaching pastor.

Following the service, we have a fellowship hour with complimentary coffee and pastries. If you visit at least once, we’re sure you will come again!

THANK YOUSWarren and Mickey Sommerfeld thank

all their friends for sharing their special day in the commitment of marriage. Thank you for supporting our love, for the many beautiful cards and gifts and the many good wishes from our wonderful SVE friends.

Thanks to the many wonderful friends and neighbors in Sunland Village East. While visiting family in Wisconsin, I fell and broke my arm. Upon my return, I wasn’t able to do much. I appreciated all the cards, phone calls, visits, delicious food and many other gifts. Also, so many offers to drive, do errands and other things for me. It was amazing. Thanks again. You are all the greatest.Arlene Voit

The family of Richard Classen would like to thank you for your prayers, cards and support at this diffi cult time.Violet Classen

Sunland Village East Outlook August 2010 3

Phonebooks are frequently left at our doors in full view of anyone going by. Be a good neighbor and remove them from porches of residents you know will not return until fall. They are an advertisement that the house is unoccupied, and you could be protecting your neighbors from a break-in.

Few of us need more than one of these books in their household. The extras are accepted for recycling in the newspaper dumpsters located near the north and south pool complexes. Money received from the sale of

the recycled papers goes into the SVE general fund, so you will be doing two

good deeds by picking up and depositing the books there.

ARCHITECTURAL COMMITTEE SECURITY CORNERJames Mayberry

Garage doors being found open still continue to be a common problem in the village with one theft being reported. Lets be alert to this problem, not only for yourself, but for your neighbors.

Mesa police report cars being broken into at malls, contributed to by purses and wallets being left on the car seats. We are reminded that thieves watch for shoppers returning to their cars with purchases and leaving again to continue to shop. It is suggested that we relocate our cars before going back to shop in order not to help the thieves. Have a safe summer.

BITS & PIECESGOLF CONDO II

Too Many Phonebooks

Larry Seegers“If it isn’t broke, don’t fi x it” is an

old proverb we have heard many times. The Architectural Committee has been operating, for the most part, with procedures established long before 1997, when Farnsworth turned the ACC entirely over to the SVE Home Owners Association. This procedure established over 13 to 16 years ago has been followed since. The procedure being that two ACC members meet with homeowners making requests for exterior changes to their property. We observe their request fi rst hand while offering suggestions or advice as to how that change must be made to be in compliance with the RCC&R’s and

ACC guidelines. Our ACC members are very knowledgeable with these regulations that govern any change an owner may wish to perform on their property.

Change request forms presented at our regular ACC meetings were discussed with our membership. If a request out of the ordinary or unusual surfaced for a two member team when visiting the homeowner, discussion with other members took place prior to granting approval or denial of the request. The two member team would then sign the request. Over these 13 to 16 years we have always been consistent with the interpretations and enforcement of our guidelines, thereby, not subjecting the

HOA to possible lawsuits. The Board of Directors has

determined that a majority of the ACC members must sign any request, rather than just the team of two who previously observed and serviced an owner’s request. As of June 08, 2010, the new procedure will be for the ACC to review all requests at its regular meetings. This procedure will not require member teams to meet with homeowners making a change request as we did in past years. A practice that owners appreciated and complimented us on for our time, care and concerns of our Village with regards to their requests. A 90 day trial is now in effect.

Charlie Walker August Holidays to celebrate: the 7th is National

Lighthouse Day (in Arizona?), on the 11th is Presidential Joke day (no comment), National Thrift Shop Day is the 17th (have a friend who celebrates this every day of the year), the 21st is Senior Citizens Day (let’s hear it for us seniors!), National Dog Day falls on the 26th, and Race Your Mouse Day is the 28th (doesn’t say what kind of mouse). August is designated

National Picnic Month. Has anyone who decides when these national celebration days fall ever visited Arizona in August and tried to have an outdoor picnic? The pineapple originated

in South America and did not reach Hawaii until the early nineteenth century. Absolutely useless bit of information: the average

computer user blinks seven times a minute. Are there really people out there who spend time researching these things?

Disgraceful bit of information: each year 96 billion pounds of food is wasted in the U.S.

On growing old – The things you cared to do, you don’t care to do but you care that you don’t care to

do them anymore. Music is one if the

greatest gifts of all . . .it asks nothing in return but that we listen. My idea of housework is

to sweep the room with a glance. A little biblical humor:

Did you know it’s a sin for a woman to make coffee? Yup, it says in the Bible “He-brews”. I can hear all the groans. The smallest fi sh in the

world is the Timattum Nanus of the Chagos Archipelago which

measures just 0.33 inches long. Sure would make it diffi cult to clean

them for supper. This month’s quotable quote: “Don’t get your knickers

in a knot. Nothing is solved and it just makes you walk funny.” Kathryn Carpenter

Wanda KatzmanIt is that time again but

I am not sitting on my patio writing. We have a few clouds but no rain for almost three months. For those golfers enjoying their cool vacations away from here, the green is green but the rest is kind of brown. There are still hardy golfers out early in the mornings.

The men who golf here will be sad to know we lost one of our own. Bob Johnson passed away this past weekend and the funeral was yesterday. He quietly slipped away at home with family at bedside. Our street keeps losing the original residents, one by one. DeDe is recovering from illness in Kansas Ciy with family. I just learned that Angie Klooster is quite ill and we wish them both a quick recovery and can be back with us soon. Duke Nash continues with

treatments and our thoughts go with him.

We do have some happy news, #175 is brighter these days with the newlyweds moved in now. Warren & Mickey may you enjoy the street for many years and do join us for our many parties. In the fall, the committee will be around at your door selling tickets and I think the fi rst activity is in the Auditorium November 16.

Now more of the hardy residents who have been here now are taking short trips to cooler climates. Just a few of us remain to keep watch on the street. It is looking more attractive as the painters progress. They have fi nished the condos, the trim and the garage doors on the right side of the street and will start on the opposite side soon.

Have a wonderful healthy summer and hope to see you in the fall.!!!

SportsCOMPUTER CLUB BITS AND BYTES

Beverly SelvageSummer is winding down and soon you will all be back in the Village for the winter.

I want every one to go to the website and read Joe’s July newsletter article on FaceBook.

A lot of us grandparents are keeping up with their grandchildren’s activities

by joining facebook, but you should all be aware of the pit falls in using it. It is an informative

article and well worth reading.Ed Zarr is busy scheduling presentations for the Fall.

Go to our website, WWW.SVECC.COM to get upcoming events, new information, free software websites and help articles

If you have any ideas of programs for next year, let us know. We could also use some volunteers to give presentations on software programs that they use, e.g. fi nancial, stock market, spreadsheet or anything of interest. Remember this is your club.

SVE GENEALOGYJean McLane

Summer has arrived and we’ll all be wishing for cooler weather. Hopefully, September will be a month you can take short trips and enjoy the cooler air and scenery in northern Arizona. If heading out of state toward St George or Salt Lake City plan to spend a couple days visiting the libraries. St George is smaller of course but they will have volunteers to help you also.

The East Valley and Tempe Chapters of the Family History Society of Arizona meet during the summer months and they always have interesting programs. You can visit more than one time and they are friendly folks that welcome you and offer ideas and help where needed.

As mentioned last month we will not be meeting during the summer except for those wishing to get a group together, to visit or just compare notes, the room is available so check with Gene for the key. The Family History Library, downtown Mesa, was closed the last two weeks in July, sorry I didn’t mention this in the last newsletter.

For those wishing to go to the Library with the group in August or later, please meet on the patio of the Mesa Verde Room at 8:45 AM on the 1st Wednesday of each month. Carpool or bring a friend to go with you. We have just spent a couple days researching and had to send to Salt Lake for tapes we wanted to see. There will be one more coming so hope to fi nd my fi fth great grandfather and where he came from, Scotland, Ireland or England. With the name Baldwin it will probably be England.

Please continue to have a safe and healthy summer and our fi rst regular meeting will be October 20, 2010.

If you have questions or need help call Gene Trust, 373-6052, Diane Schmidt, 986-5699 or Jean McLane, 986-0002. One of us may be here to help you or answer your questions. Stay cool and happy researching.

HORSESHOE BITSIt is much too hot to be pitching shoes in the summer

unless you do it early in the morning. There are a couple of guys who are at the pits about six in the morning. If you are interested in pitching, you will fi nd them there.

We are looking for more members for our club. We have a good bunch, and you would enjoy playing with them.

At the present time, our team members are spread all over the country from Alaska to South Dakota. They will be back for league play which starts in November. Anyone, male or female, who is interested in playing, please call Pat Ward at 380-4246.

Lona ChristoffersWell…. I guess the dog

days of summer are upon us. But there are still some die-hard tennis players who show up at the courts each morning for their daily exercise. Keep it up, it just makes all of us better tennis players.

I heard via the grape vine the Tennis Club Christmas Party is currently being planned by our Social Committee. Be sure to mark the evening of December 13 on your calendar. It will be held in the SVE Auditorium with fun and games, food, music, and surprises! We hope everyone will be able to attend. This should be the fi rst event marked on your December 2010 calendar page so there should not be any double bookings for that night. We’re

expecting a big turn out. If you enjoy playing tennis,

or are just a beginner, come on over on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday morning at 6:30 AM for drop-in round robin. All levels of players

are welcome. If you have always wanted to try

your hand at tennis, we welcome you to come by and join in. We have fun in a relaxed atmosphere before the temps get

too high.CALLING all tennis

players and want-to-be’s. Free tennis lessons are being offered October 19 at 1 o’clock pm on our courts. Loaner racquets are available and experienced teachers will give you all the basics. This is your chance to try your hand at this great game. See you on the Tennis Courts!
