The need for Intelligent Mobility: Congestion

Intelligent Mobility

• The UK ranks as the 5th most congested out the top 25 wealthiest nations.

• Congestion costs the UK around £12bn annually

• Road accidents: £9.3bn

• Continued strain on networks expected as• UK ranks as one of the world’s most intensely

road transport dependent societies• Office of Rail Regulation figures show that,

overall, train passenger numbers are 3 per cent greater than capacity.

• The distance travelled on our roads has increased tenfold since 1950.

The need for Intelligent Mobility: Population

Intelligent Mobility

• The UK ranks as the 8th most densely populated out the top 25 nations with continued growth expected.

The need for Intelligent Mobility: Environment

Intelligent Mobility

• Transport’s effect on the environment is well publicised in terms of emissions, fossil fuel reliance and pollution.

• Poor air quality costs the UK between £4.5 and £10.6bn annually with road transport accounting for 22% of total UK emissions of CO2 and 80% from transport sector as a whole.

• Intelligent transport systems needed to address and help UK achieve climate change objectives

The need for Intelligent Mobility: Economy

Intelligent Mobility

• An effective and efficient transport system is an important enabler of economic growth and prosperity.

• The government has stated that “a modern transport infrastructure is essential for a dynamic and entrepreneurial economy”

• The economic value of public transport services in Europe amounts to €130–150 billion per year, representing approximately 1–1.2 percent of the GDP

The need for Intelligent Mobility

Intelligent Mobility

Assuming the population growth, and demand for multi-modal transport continues, the DfT predicts that by 2035 road traffic will be 44% higher than in the level in 2010, with the rail industry predicting that by 2035 the railway will be carrying twice as many passengers as today.

We have 3 options :

Option Option Option

The use of Intelligent mobility to:

Increase traffic flows, safety, and user satisfaction whilst reducing energy consumption, emissions, and congestion

Proportionately increase road capacity and infrastructure at mass expense.

Continue to encourage a modal shift – requiring infrastructure upgrades to public transport

The winner is........

Intelligent Mobility

3• Intelligent Mobility focusing on vehicle flow across all modes of

transport, using technology to:• Decrease congestion• Decrease emissions• Increase safety• Address how to fund these positive & necessary changes to

sustain the UK economy

Option : Intelligent Mobility3Intelligent mobility focuses on:

‘Mobility’ instead of choice of transport method

Seamless planning and execution of journey planning

across all transport modes.

Interconnection between industries

and technologies.

Intelligent interactions between

vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-

Infrastructure.

Optimise vehicle movements - today

Intelligent Mobility No. 12

Provide great choice through real-time

journey planners for travellers

Monitoring current traffic conditions using satellite

and video technology,

making predictions based on data.

Coordinating traffic signals to minimise queues in

traffic-responsive way

Monitoring of vehicles or drivers through Computer

aided dispatch, cargo tracking, electronic pre-

clearance through borders

Pay as you drive:

Insurance or automatic tolling

& congestion charges

Intelligent Mobility has the potential to connect

all forms of transport with existing infrastructure,

authorities and travellers alike:

Vehicular communication and the impact on traffic flows is expected to be able to increase capacity of existing UK roads by a factor of 3-5!

Real-time communication (using WiFi and GPS) on local traffic conditions allowing effective route-replanning and 360 degree detection range of potential collisions and moving obstacles

Implications for the future

Intelligent Mobility

• David Cameron on Monday: “We need to look at innovative approaches to the funding of our national roads - to increase investment to reduce congestion”

• 2012 Budget on Wednesday: Transport Systems Catapult centre proposed:• focus on efficient and sustainable ways to move people and goods (freight)

across national transport systems including road, rail, sea and air. • Transport Minister Theresa Villiers: “I can see such a centre making a

significant contribution to reducing road congestion, reducing rail delays and improving end-to end journeys”
