“ I felt a sort of nervous excitement and happy anticipation, not knowing what to expect. I felt relieved at the welcoming atmosphere of the Susanna Wesley House. It was a big move and the positive motivational

quotes on the walls were great. It didn’t take long to start feeling at home. My space is beautiful and unique; I have everything I need. It is clean and safe. This experience means a new beginning. It means that although I have made some bad decisions and mistakes, that it is never too late to do the right thing. To me, this program means HOPE; hope for a future. Thank you Susanna Wesley House and the YWCA

for providing an opportunity like this for my family. I haven’t felt safe in a very long time.”

Meet the YWCA’s Onsite Case Manager

Janet Adams (SWH Executive Director): Tell me something about your background? Dachon Carroll (Case Manager): I have a Bachelor Degree in Psychology with a concentration in Psychological Services and Master Degree in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling. I’ve worked in the field of Human Services for 20 years. I’ve worked for the following organizations, supporting women and children in crises: Friends Research Institute, Social Research Center; YWCA Eleanor D. Corner House Emergency Shelter; YWCA Rutland Transitional Housing Program; and Mercy Supportive Housing Program. Janet: What do you think of the Susanna Wesley House (SWH) facility? Dachon: The physical appearance of the Susanna Wesley House is beautiful. Each living area has its own unique-ness and style. The atmosphere at Susanna Wesley House is inviting. Being in the Susanna Wesley House fosters a sense of home and family living. The Susanna Wesley House offers participants from various backgrounds the opportunity to work through current barriers that hinder residential stability and self-sufficiency.

Janet: What is the intake process for families being considered for SWH? Dachon: Prospective clients are referred from Emergency Shelters, Domestic Violence Shelters, and Drug Treat-ment Facilities. They complete a prescreening to determine program eligibility. Once a client is considered eligible for the program, an intake is completed. During the time of intake the client is administered a drug screening. Clients who successfully complete the intake and who pass the drug screening will participate in an interview with the Program Director and or Case Manager.

Janet: What supportive services are being offered by the YWCA to the women and children of SWH? Dachon: SWH residents receive Case Management Services through the YWCA. Residents are required to participate in all workshops outlined by the program (ie. Parenting, Self Esteem, Nutrition, etc.)Residents also receive life skills training (budgeting, housekeeping, communication etc.), Educational Assistance (referrals to GED, ABE, or College), Employment Assistance (resume assistance, job referrals, job search assistance), Mental Health referrals, and any other services that may assist the resident with becoming self-sufficient . Residents actively work with the Case Manager to develop an Individualized Service Plan which helps to identify barriers to permanent housing.

Janet: What has been the response of most of the mothers upon arrival at SWH? Dachon: All residents have been impressed with the SWH facilities. All residents have responded positively to being here at SWH. Clients upon arrival, are amazed at the physical appearance of the building especially their living space.

Janet: What are the present demographics of the House? Dachon: There are presently six families; the average age of the mothers is 25; there are nine children, ranging in age from 3 months to 8 years old and to pregnant moms. Janet: Thanks for your time Dachon. It’s good to know that we have your expertise supporting Susanna Wesley House’s mission to serve previously homeless mothers and their children.

The Difference Ways You Can Support Our Work

There are several ways to give to Susanna Wesley House and you can be sure that your donation will be used to benefit the residents of SWH. Donations help us maintain the 609 Park building; with inspec-tions, repairs, and renovations. Donations will also be used toward our planned renovations for the 607 Park building. Your support helps us keep our residents, particularly the children, safe and secure, as they transition to more stable and independent lives. Gifts by Check or Money Order Susanna Wesley House welcomes gifts made by check or money order. Please make your check or money order payable to Susanna Wesley House and mail to: 609 Park Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21201. Contact your employer's human resources office to see if your gift can be matched. If so, simply request a matching gift form from your employer and send the signed form to Susanna Wesley House. In Honor Of or In Memory Of Gifts Making a gift that helps others is a wonderful way to celebrate a milestone or remember an important person in your life. In Honor Of donations are usually made in celebration of events such as graduations, weddings, promotions, and retirements. These donations take on a new meaning when you help to improve the lives of children and women in the Baltimore area. Likewise, remembering those who have touched your life in a special way takes on greater meaning when your generosity helps those in need. Each gift is acknowledged by a card sent to the honored person or family of the deceased person in whose name the gift is being made. The notification does not include the amount of the gift. However, as a donor, you will receive a separate gift acknowledgement for your own records. Wheels for Susanna Wesley When a donation is pledged, the Vehicle Donation Processing Center, Inc., takes the donor information over the telephone, handles all the documents, vehicle pick up, sale at auction and distribution of proceeds to The Su-sanna Wesley House, Inc. The Vehicle Donation Processing Center guarantees payment of all expenses in administering the program for Susanna Wesley House, Inc. Susanna Wesley House receives 70% of the auction revenue and 30% covers the administration costs incurred by our vehicle donation partner. For example, if the vehicle donation yields $1,000 at auction, Susanna Wesley House will receive $700--a substantial gift! Workplace Giving Give to Susanna Wesley House through your workplace campaign – you may designate us to receive your payroll deduction. Susanna Wesley House is a designee for the United Way-#887175; Maryland Charity Campaign-#2799; and Combined .Federal Campaign (# not yet issued).
