WHAT IS SUSANNA’S CUPBOARD?

Susanna’s Cupboard is Manvel’s local food bank.

They are, often times, confused with the Alvin Food Bank, and therefore, get overlooked.

They feed approximately 2,700 people a month.

That means 2,700 of your neighbors are unable to provide food for themselves, and they must rely on community support to eat and feed their children!

300-400 PEOPLE?How are two tables of canned goods supposed to feed this many people? It doesn’t! Susanna’s Cupboard strives to give families all of the food they need for the week. That becomes difficult when they do not get enough donations. As it is, these cans had to be purchased from the Houston Food Bank with donated funds, much of which comes from the volunteers.

“ONCE IT’S GONE, THAT’S ALL WE HAVE….THERE IS NO MORE.”This is all the food that remains in the pantry BEFORE families came this past Tuesday. Once this is gone, the pantry is empty, and local families will be turned away.

AN ABUNDANCE OF BREADBread supplies are usually not a problem at Susanna’s Cupboard, and Panera donates their Monday night left overs to the pantry, however, bread gets moldy rather quickly, so there is no way to stock pile it. Unfortunately, Susanna’s Cupboard does not have the funds for a large freezer to store any leftovers, but there are usually more families to feed than bread to give, even though it looks like a large quantity.

UNFORTUNATELY, THERE ARE LIMITATIONS…

Susanna’s Cupboard has had to limit the families they serve to the zip codes listed, in order to ensure that the local families are getting the food they need.

ARE THESE VOLUNTEERS

?Good guess, but this is not the case. This is what the crowd looks like at 1:00 p.m. Pick up does not start until 4:00 p.m.

IF THIS IS WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE NOW, WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE SUMMER? Many parents rely on school to feed

their children twice a day. How do these kids eat during the summer, when school is not in session?

These kids often only get one meal a day, unless they can rely on help from food banks like Susanna’s Cupboard.

WHY DON’T THESE FAMILIES JUST GO TO THE HOUSTON FOOD BANK? These families do not have money for

food, much less gas and transportation. Many lack the transportation to get to

places that are more than a few miles away.

WHAT CAN WE DO? Susanna’s Cupboard needs our help to

restock their shelves for the summer! Our goal is to make this happen.

Collect canned goods and non-perishable food items, such as beans, rice, pasta, soups, vegetables and fruits.

Bring the canned goods to your 4th period teacher, and we will come collect them starting tomorrow.

NJHS and Student Council will deliver all of the food to Susanna’s Cupboard on May 23rd, to help feed local families over the summer.

AN ADDED BONUS… The three classes with the highest percentages of food collected will receive a pizza party!

SOME OF OUR NEIGHBORING FAMILIES DO NOT HAVE THE FOOD THEY NEED. LET’S SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY, AND RESTOCK SUSANNA'S CUPBOARD!
