  • PREFACE

In scope and arrangement the present volume follows fairly closely the pat-tern of the two previous indexes. Such modifications as have been made aredesigned to render it, if possible, more useful. The following notes may helpthose using this index for the first time.

Scope and content. The volumes indexed are XXXIX (1931) to LX (1963)inclusive. Since the Annual Reports ceased to be bound in with the Collect-ions after Volume LIV, and since the material in them is largely of quite adifferent category, they have been omitted altogether from this index. Thisaccounts for a considerable reduction in the number of entries. Otherwisethe aim has been to include entries for all persons and places with signifi-cant mention in the text, and as many subject references as were deemeduseful. Archaeological sites outside the county and subject entries for arch-aeological items which are mentioned only for the purpose of comparisonhave been omitted, unless it appeared that the information had not previouslybeen published elsewhere. The Classified list of illustrations has been dis-continued, but illustrations, when they occur, are noted under the subjectheadings (e.g. 39. 1-20, illus.)

Persons. An attempt has been made to relate names of people to the placesin connection with which they are mentioned in the text. The name of theappropriate parish is inserted in brackets following the personal name. This does not necessarily mean that the person resided in the parish, al-though very frequently this is so.

For pre-nineteenth-century names variant spellings have been grouped to-gether under the form most nearly conforming to the modern version, withcross references from the others. In the case of modern names, eachvariation is entered separately, with a reference from the general heading(e.g. Cooke, Coke and Cowke are grouped as variants of Cook, but modernCooke has a separate heading).

Only variants actually occurring in the text are listed and if the only versionis an unusual one the name will only appear in that form. It is always advis-able to look under all possible spellings. Exceptions to this are early per-sonal names which are versions of place names. These, however spelt, areentered under the usual spelling of the place.

Peers are entered under their family names where these could be ascer-tained, with cross references from their titles. The main entry for a mar-ried woman is under the name of her (latest) husband, with cross referencesfrom her maiden name and earlier married names if known. Common firstnames are abbreviated according to the table on p.y.

Places. As in the previous indexes, names of places are entered under theappropriate civil parish headings, with cross references only from the moreimportant localities. A special problem in this volume has been the numberof changes in parish boundaries. Although local historians may feel thatit would have been convenient to retain the ancient parish boundaries, for

  • archaeological sites this would not be relevant. I have therefore adopted asa standard the boundaries as shown on the ordnance survey administrativemap of 1963. To make certain, however, that all localities were correctlyplaced within those boundaries would have taken an unreasonable amount oftime. Therefore, as an insurance against inconsistencies, and as an aid tothose who expect to find localities under their ancient parishes, I have addedgeneral cross references at the head of each parish where changes haveoccurred (e.g. under Hascombe, "See also Alfold, which now includes the for-mer detached part of H., and Godalming,/orwer parts of which are now in //".)Headings for parishes now in Greater London have been retained as in theprevious volume.

Under each parish heading there is a paragraph of general subject entriesarranged alphabetically, followed by separate paragraphs for (a) church, including incumbents, (b) any other specially important buildings, (c) otherplaces, arranged alphabetically. Under (c) will be found all the referencesto place names mentioned in the text, although some of these may also beincluded in the general subject paragraph.

Subjects. It is very difficult to be consistent in indexing subjects referredto in articles of such diversity as occur in the Collect ions, but I have triedto include everthing significant that might be sought by users of the index, with as many cross references from alternative headings as seemed desir-able. Some large headings, such as Pottery are sub-divided by period, thenalphabetically by find- place, with descriptive notes under each to indicatetypes. Under the general period headings: Palaeolithic, Neolithic, Bronze,Age, Early Iron Age, Roman, Saxon, Mediaeval, only sites and some generalentries have been included, with cross references to headings under whichmore specific items will be found.

As a rule articles are not analysed, e.g. an article on the history and archi-tecture of a church will have only one entry under the parish (sub-headingchurch).on the assumption that users will refer to that article if they areinterested in any of the features of the church. Any such features of specialinterest, such as font, screen, etc. will appear in the index under the appro-priate subject headings.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTSI should like to thank all those members of the Society, as well as colleaguesand friends, who have helped me with advice and encouragement, in parti-cular the Honorary Editor, Mr. E. E. Harrison, Miss M. Gollancz and Mr. F. A.Hastings. Miss Clare Smith performed the noble task of translating intoneat and accurate typescript the several thousand handwritten slips. Thepreparation has taken me longer than I anticipated and I appreciate thepatience which the S.A.S. Council has shown towards me. In spite of thehelp I have received and the time spent on the task I know there are stillmany shortcomings, for which I alone am responsible.
