Routines and RequirementsRoutines and Requirements

An effective way to manage some of the challenges we faceeach day, especially for our young people, is to ensure thereis still routines, requirements and expectations that they arerequired to meet.

Sunshine Beach State High School is a uniform school. It hasclear uniform requirements and it is expected that all studentsmeet these requirements fully. The uniform requirements ofSunshine Beach State High School are:

https://sunbeachshs.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/456/sbshs_uniform_policy.pdf

When students wear their full and correct uniform, researchhas demonstrated, that they mentally prepare themselves forschool. Student’s minds are more readily focused on schooland learning and their behaviours are more learning orientated. As with older students who have part-time work at manyorganisations, the uniform indicates that they are “turning up”for work and therefore focus on work.

It is also important for students to arrive at school on time.We have a number of road works that are impacting on traveltime and students need to leave slightly earlier whilst these arehappening to ensure there is sufficient travel time to arrive ontime.

I would ask if all parents and caregivers could assist in ensuringthat our students leave their homes, on time, in the full correctuniform and therefore assist in helping your children focus onschool and achieving. If a family has difficulty with meetingthe uniform requirements I would ask that you contact yourchild’s Head of Year and we can see how we can assist you inensuring your child is in correct school uniform.

Til next time

Grant Williams

On the school website there is a documentthat I have prepared that outlines the differences between thetwo. VET (vocational education and training) certificate I, II, III,IV courses have not changed. The only difference is that someVET courses and applied subjects are so similar that studentswill only get credit for one of the courses. Please see theattached document that explains general and applied subjects.

ATARATAR scorescore – The ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank)is the new ranking system that will replace the OP (overallposition) score 1 – 25 that we had the final 2019 Year 12students. It is still just a ranking system to rank students fromthe best students in the state to the least performing studentsin the state and is specifically calculated for the purposes ofallocating University course offers to students.

What is the difference between the ATAR and OP?What is the difference between the ATAR and OP?

CalculatingCalculating ATARsATARs -- The Queensland Tertiary AdmissionsCentre (QTAC) will be responsible for calculating students’ATARs.

QTAC will calculate ATARs based on either:

• The ATAR is a finer grained rank order of studentsthan the OP.

• It’s a number between 0.00 and 99.95 withincrements of 0.05, whereas the OP consists of 25bands.

• The ATAR is commonly used in other states andterritories.

• a student's best five general subject results, or

• a student's best results in a combination of fourgeneral subject results, plus one Applied subjectresult or completed VET qualification at AustralianQualifications Framework (AQF) Certificate III level orabove.

One of the easiest ways we can keep raising funds for ourschool is by donating empty containers through the Containersfor Change initiative. The next P&C Meeting will be on Tuesday, 25 August at5.30pm – we are meeting in the Library and new members arealways welcome. We’d love to hear your thoughts on how theP&C can help build a strong and resilient community.

Finally, we’d like to wish the Year 12 students all the best asthey prepare for their final exams. The Class of 2020 havecertainly had an interesting school experience. They were thefirst students to start year 7 at high school, the first to moveacross to the new ATAR system and then they get theCOVID-19 cherry on top! We hope all these challenges willmake them stronger and ready to take on the real world.

Until next time,
