Will my teeth last a Lifetime…? Your teeth

can last a lifetime withproper home care and regu-lar dental checkups. Nomatter what your age, youcan keep your teeth andgums healthy by brushingtwice a day, and seeingyour dentist regularly forprofessional cleanings andcheckups.

Even if you brush andfloss regularly, you mayface certain problems inyour senior years when itcomes to our oral health.Wearing dentures takingmedications and generalhealth conditions are someof them. Luckily, your den-tist can help you meet mostof these challenges quitesuccessfully.

Sensitivity can be anincreasing problem as oneages. Your gums naturallyrecede over time, exposingareas of the tooth that arenot protected by enamel. Insevere cases cold air, as wellas sensitivity to sour andsweet drinks and foods, can occur. If you experiencesensitivity, try anti-sensi-tivity toothpaste. If theproblem persists, see yourdentist, as the sensitivitymay be an indication of amore serious condition, such as a cavity or acracked or fractured tooth.

Dry Mouth is very com-mon in older people, and isusually a side effect of medi-cation, a lot of mediationscan cause dry mouth. Sa-liva normally washes awayfood particles and bacteriaand helps keep your mouth

clean if you have dry mouththe food particles and bac-teria will stay around longerand are more likely to causedecay.

Over the counter fluo-ride rinses can help protectyour teeth fro decay. Youcan moisten your mouth bydrinking lots of water orsucking on unsweetenedlemon droops.

Decreased biting effi-ciency - Non replacement ofmissing teeth cause diffi-culty in chewing and limi-tations in food intake. Italso causes weakening ofexisting teeth and they startmoving into the emptyspace, causing decrease inbiting efficiency.

Existing health condi-tions such as diabetes, cancause weakening of theteeth and gums and alsodelay healing. Constanthigh quality cleaning is es-sential to maintain thehealth of teeth in these pa-tients.

Other Problems somedental changes are notcaused by aging, but sideeffects of medications orother diseases. For ex-ample, many drugs takenfor some other diseasecause changes in the waythings taste. Taste changescan cause nutritional prob-lems because food becomesless attractive and peoplemay not eat a balanced diet.

Specify the tablets ormedications that you aretaking. This is very impor-tant especially for heart pa-tients because certain medi-cation like ECOSPRIN etc,if not stopped before treat-ment can cause unwantedand undesired complica-tions.

With a combination ofgood and hygiene andregular check ups with yourdentist you could definitelyhold on to your wonderfulteeth and lead healthy life.

The reserve bank ofindia(rbi), bank

cheques based on the oldpattern would be a thing ofpast in the city. this followsrbi directives which stipu-lates banks to follow a newcheque regime that wouldhave special coding en-crypted on the cheques.

The new cheques calledmechanical inward clearing(micr) cheques have forcedthe city banks to shift tomicr clearing. so while mostbanks have declared thatthey would now on dealonly in the new cheque for-mat, some nationalisedbanks continue to acceptand clear old patterncheques, albeit on certaindays of the week.

The old cheques are stillbeing accepted in phases inbanks like the bank ofbaroda (bob). the bankswould be accepting thesecheques on monday, wednesday and fridays and

New cheque formatwould eventually phasethem out by october end, sources said.

The new cheque formatcomes in a form where itcannot be folded andwould be slightly laminatedor hard bound. they wouldbe computer coded andwould have a magnetic ink."the changes" an officialsaid, "had been necessiatedto make them foolprooffrom any pilferage or fraud".

The banks have there-fore urged all those con-cerned to sort the chequesinto micr and non-micrcheques and fill separateslips for each type. accord-ing to a press release by thehdfc bank, the non-micrcheques would be ac-cepted only once in a weekon saturdays till september25.

Henceforth, the presen-tation and returns would beonce a week. however manybank officials conceded

that they were not "entirelyready for the newchequeregime" and that thestaggering of dates for theimplementation of the newmicr clearance in the cityhad compounded theirproblems.

Officials in the sbi mainbranch in hazaratganj con-ceded that while they hadbeen hearing "now andthen" on the new type ofcheques they were yet toget an authoritative com-munique in this regard. "wehave been told that thedeputy governor of the rbihas suggested this but areyet to receive an officialconfirmation", the pro ofthe bank said.

And as always owing toconflicting signals on thecheque formatting thatwould be accepted andcleared the bank customeris at wits end on "which wayto go"?

Mahendra Singh Dhoni(born 7 July 1981) is an

His Test,ODI record is best among allthe Indian captains to date. Healso captained Chennai SuperKings to victory in the recent2011 IPL and in the Champi-ons League. He is now captainof India in all three forms ofthe game and also led the teamto their first ever bilateral ODIseries wins in Sri Lanka andNew Zealand. Under Dhoni'scaptaincy India became thefirst team after a gap of morethan 20 years to whitewashAustralia in a Test series.Dhoni also led the Indian teamto the number one position inICC rankings in Test cricketfor the first time. Dhoni hasalso been the recipient of manyawards including the ICC ODIPlayer of the Year award in2008 and 2009 (the first In-dian player to achieve thisfeat), the Rajiv Gandhi KhelRatna award and the PadmaShri, India's fourth highest ci-vilian honour in 2009. In 2009Dhoni topped the list ofworld’s top 10 earning crick-eters compiled by Forbes.[1]He was named as the captainof ICC World Test and ICCODI teams for 2009. In the fi-nal of the 2011 Cricket WorldCup, he hit 91 not out of just79 balls to lead India to vic-tory. For his outstanding bat-ting in the final, he wasawarded as the man of thematch. The TIME magazine

Brain Food:

added him in its "Time 100"list of 100 most influentialpeople of 2011.[2] Accordingto the SportsPro magazineDhoni is 10th most valuablebrand in field of sports world-wide and number 1 among allAsian superstars.[3]

Captain of IndiaDhoni was named the cap-

tain of India Twenty 20 squadfor the inaugural ICC WorldTwenty20 held in South Af-rica in September 2007.[60]India were crowned champi-ons as Dhoni led the team tovictory against Pakistan in athrilling contest.[61] He, thenwent on to become the ODIcaptain of the Indian team forthe seven-match ODI seriesagainst Australia in September2007.[62] He made his debutas full-time Test captain ofIndia during the fourth and fi-nal test against Australia atNagpur in November 2008 re-placing Anil Kumble who wasinjured in the third test andwho then announced his retire-ment. Dhoni was vice-captainin this series up to thatpoint.[63] India eventuallywon that Test thus clinchingthe series 2–0 and retained the

Border-Gavaskar Trophy.[64]Dhoni had previouslycaptained India on a stand-inbasis against South Africa andAustralia in 2008 and 2009respectively.

It was under his captaincythat India climbed to No. 1 inthe ICC Test Rankings in De-cember 2009. After that hemanaged to lead India in a se-ries-levelling world champion-ship of Tests against the SouthAfricans in Feb 2010.

After winning the 2011ICC Cricket World Cup forIndia against Sri Lanka on 2April 2011 with his matchwinning knock of unbeaten 91,Tendulkar heaped praises onDhoni, claiming him to be thebest captain he has playedunder. Tendulkar mentionedthat it was Dhoni's calm influ-ence that was rubbing off onall his team-mates and evenunder such extreme pressurefrom every corner the wayDhoni handles it and brings thebest out of him was just in-credible. Saurav Ganguly alsosaid in an interview to a newschannel that Dhoni is the alltime greatest captain of Indiaand he has a great record to

support this credential.Two-match banDhoni was handed a two-

match ban from playing in theODI series against Sri Lankafor the team's slow over-rateduring the second one-dayer inNagpur (18 December2009).[65]

World CupUnder Dhoni's captaincy,

India won the 2011 WorldCup. In the final against SriLanka, chasing 275, Dhonipromoted himself up the bat-ting order, coming beforeYuvraj Singh. When he cameto bat India needed more thansix runs per over with threetop order batsmen already dis-missed. He started building agood partnership with GautamGambhir. Due to goodstrokeplay and active runningbetween wickets, they keptup with the required run rate.Dhoni was on 60 off 60 balls, but later accelerated with agreater flow of boundaries, ending with 91 not out off 79balls. Befitting the occasion, hefinished the match with a hugesix over long-on off bowlerNuwan Kulasekara.

Later he admitted in thepost match presentation thathe came up the order so as tocounter the Muralitharan spinthreat as he was very familiarwith Murali's bowling, beinghis team-mate in the IndianPremier League (IPL) franchiseChennai Super Kings. He hadcome after the dismissal of ViratKohli, also a right-handed bats-man. By partnering with theleft-handed Gambhir, he en-sured a right-left combinationat the crease that makes it dif-ficult for bowlers to settle intoa rhythm.

The bat used by Dhoni inthe final match, which got theteam winning six was sold for72 Lac. The money goes toSakshi Rawat Foundation, operated by Dhoni's wifeSakshi Rawat to help orphanchildren.

It is possible and some inIndia's north-east have been

eating a variety of soft ricewhich can be eaten after it issoaked in normal water forabout 45 minutes.

If the water is lukewarm,it takes just 15 minutes.

But there is one problem. This particular type of ricegrows only in cool climates andthe yield is very low.

So scientists at Cuttack-based Central Rice Research

TO MANY this may sound like a "believe it or not" story.

Is it possible to eat ricewithout cooking it?

Institute (CRRI) in Orissaworked on the rice and havesince perfected a variety thatcan grow in hot climates, simi-lar to that in rice-growing re-gions of the world, and pro-duce a higher yield.

CRRI director TapanKumar Adhya told tabla!: "Wewanted to see whether thesame rice can be grown hereand retain the same proper-ties."

Speaking about the scien-

tists' work on the rice varietynamed Aghonibora, he added:"It was studied in detail andfound to retain the soak-and-eat characteristics. It took 140to 145 days to mature, mea-sured 90cm in height andyielded about 4.5 tonnes perhectacre in preliminary test-ing."

The reason this rice iscalled soft rice is that it is lowon amylose (starch).

The popular varieties inIndia's north-east areAghonibora, Bhogalibora,Chakua and Misiri.

The first two varietieswere released by the RegionalAgricultural Research Station,Titabar, in Assam.

Dr Adhya sees great po-tential for this rice and he isconfident that farmers willtake up farming this variety.

He says that one of the biggains will be the tremendousamount of savings in fuel, time"and above all help maintain acleaner environment".
