SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

Monday, January 27th: St. Angela Merici

Friday, January 31st: St. John Bosco; Chinese New Year 4712

In St. Paul's time, the church was so new that everyone remembered how they came to the faith. That's not a bad thing. Even to-
day, in helping with the RCIA, I like to hear how the new converts were drawn to the Lord. But it seems that some people in Paul'stime actually boasted about who baptized them. They acted as if they were better Christians because of the person whose preach-
ing first attracted them. Paul, of course, would have no part in those rivalries. In fact, you can almost hear Paul laughing when he
talks about people who consider Christ as just another leader of one of the factions. Christ should be the sign of unity for all Chris-
tians, not just one congregation. It may be even more difficult to seek unity today, with so many Christian churches and a modern
view of diversity as somehow better than unity. While no one says they want to divide the body of Christ, I'm sure you know some-
one who thinks the only way to have a unified Church is for everyone to pray the same way they do. Yet even Paul did not expect
all believers to be clones of one another. He frequently wrote about people having many different gifts, yet all working to build up
the Body of Christ. He doesn't mean that those gifts are divisive or that the Church survives in spite of them. Those differences are
necessary; we need all the gifts that the Spirit gives us. So what can we do to help unify the Church? First, do what Jesus himself
did--pray for unity in the Church (John 17:20-21). Pray that you come to know what your own gifts are, have the courage to use
them for the Church, and appreciate the gifts of others. Second, Paul was very aware of his own weaknesses. That's what he is talk-
ing about in the last line of the reading. Jesus had to die before he could rise from the dead. Without the cross, we would have
never heard of the Resurrection. So also, without weakness, how can we experience God's strength? Instead of looking down on
those with whom we disagree, look up to see what God may be revealing to you through that person's differences.
In prayer it is better to have a heart without words than words without a heart.
--John Bunyan

A NEW LENTEN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE WOMEN OF CORPUS CHRISTI
Are you interested in getting together with a group of women to explore your faith and grow in fellowship? You
don’t have much scripture knowledge, but you would like to see how the scriptures apply to your everyday life? If
so, we invite you to join Walking with Purpose. We'll meet for six weeks on Thursday evenings from 6:15 to 8:00,
starting March 6, 2014.
Walking with Purpose (WWP) is a weekly reflection that aims to bring women to a deeper personal relationship with
Christ and develop friendships and support for one another. Through personal study and small group discussions,
the group helps to link our everyday challenges and struggles to the solutions given to us through the teachings of
Christ and the Church.
Interested in learning more? Please join us for a WWP introduction onSunday, Jan. 26th
, 2014. Find out what it is all
about when we meet from 1:30-3pm in the Lower Hall! Bring a friend too!
We hope to “walk” with you this Lenten season!

Just as He called the first apostles, Jesus calls each of us to fol-
low Him, too. We are not expected to leave our businesses and
our families behind, but we are expected to put our service to
Jesus before worldly endeavors.

Parent Workshop: The Transition of a Teen
February 13th 7pm to 9pm in the Lower Hall
Parents do you remember the high school years? You might remember the time of your first love, the first dance, strong friend-
ships and exciting times. Sometimes we forget the tough times such as the heartbreaks, failed exams, peer pressure, and the
social drama. The teen years are one of the most difficult times in the stages of life. The times when a youth is trying to find
themselves, while having the expectations of maturing into an adult in four years. The body is changing, the mind is changing
and life is changing for them. Emotions run high and parents often ask the question, "What were you thinking?"
Parents, come and hear a dynamic presentation by a team of professionals from the
Prevention & Intervention team of Orange County Health Care Agency.
This is one workshop you don't want to miss...
Event is free and open to the community. Please RSVP so we know how many to prepare for.
