“Respect that Table . . . Not only arrows andjavelins cause wounds.”Respect that Table in which we all participate. After participating in such a Table, andcommuning such Food, why take up arms againstone another? Not only arrows and javelins causewounds. Certain words can inflict more profoundwounds. A word pronounced against your brotheris poison shot from your mouth. If your neighborharmed you, ask God to show mercy to him. Heis your brother, a member of Christ’s body. He iscalled to one and the same Table with you. St. John Chrsysostom

If you can’t say somethinggood about someone...Q. When does an injury to another person by true

gossip become sinful? If the information is true and hastaken place, where is the injury or sin?

A. To deliberately harm another person’s reputation

by needlessly passing on some private informationabout that person can be what is called the sin ofdetraction. And to pass on something that we know isnot true, that is called the sin of calumny or slander. Ofcourse, there are times when there is good reason or anobligation to tell another’s faults — for example, if an

individual is known to be a danger to others; it may benecessary to warn others, and even to report such aperson to the appropriate authorities. It is wrong though to imagine that, just because astory about another is true, one is at liberty to spread itaround. A person’s good name is among his mostprecious possessions, and there is no justification fortarnishing that good name. A person’s faults are amatter between himself and God. The rest of us shouldkeep our noses out. Scripture has many condemning words for gossips. In Psalm 101, God doesn’t mince words: “Whoeverslanders another in secret I reduce to silence.” (Ps 101.5)

St. Paul recognized the poisonous effect of this kindof conversation. He found himself forced to warnagainst it frequently. His advice in the letter to Titus isstill valid: “They (Christians) are to slander no one, tobe peaceable, considerate, exercising all graciousnesstoward everyone” (Ti 3:2). As the old saying goes, if you can’t say somethinggood about someone, it is generally best to keep quiet.

From Catholic Q & A by Fr. John Dietzen

Meddlesome tongues...Cursed be gossips and the double-tongued, for theydestroy the peace of many.A meddlesome tongue subverts many... it destroyswalled cities, and overthrows powerful dynasties.A blow from a whip raises a welt, but a blow from thetongue smashes bones. Many have fallen by the edge of the sword, but not asmany as by the tongue. Sirach, Chapter 28

Pope Francis on GOSSIP:

“It happens to everyone, including me.”Christians need to recover the value of meekness, particularlywhen they are tempted to speak ill of one another or gossip abouteach other. The virtue of meekness is a key to harmony. Butmeekness has many enemies, and the first is gossip. Whenone prefers gossiping, gossiping about another, it’s likeclobbering another. This is normal, it happens to everyone, including me.

If something must be said about someone, it should be said to the person who could remedy the situation — notthe whole neighborhood. If, with the grace of the Spirit, we were able to stop gossiping, it would be a huge stepforward, and it would do everyone good. If one notices a defect in another, our response should be to praythat God will help him or her. St. James, in his letter, said the tongue is to be used to praise God, but when weuse our tongue to speak ill of our brother or sister, we are using it to kill God – the image of God in our brother.

Some may say that there are persons who deserve being gossiped about. But it is not so. Go and pray for him! Go and do penance for her! And then, if it is necessary, speak to someone who may be able to seek remedy forthe problem. But don’t tell everyone! We ask for grace so that we and the entire Church may convert from thecrime of gossip to love, to humility, to meekness, to docility, to the generosity of love towards our neighbor.
