Readings for Sunday,

August 23, 2020 Twenty-First Sunday in

Ordinary Time:

Is 22:19–23 Ps 138:1–2, 2–3, 6, 8 Rom 11:33–36 Mt 16:13–20

The first reading narrates the transfer of authority from one man to another. Some form of mismanagement or deceit had taken place, and so Shebna, the master of the palace was deposed. The description of the transfer resembles a ritual of investiture.

Three metaphors characterize the authority bestowed upon Eliakim the successor: father of the people, key to the house, and tent peg. This oracle promises a person who will provide the order and stability that the kingdom of Judah must have needed. If this person was not himself a messianic figure, he seems to have ensured that the kingdom, which would eventually produce a messiah, would survive. The temple setting of the psalm suggests that the psalmist has come to worship and publicly witness to the goodness of God. The temple was considered the earthly representation of the heavenly divine dwelling. Thus, standing in the temple in the presence of God, the psalmist would also be in the presence of the attending angels. The reason for the psalmist’s gratitude is God’s faithfulness to covenant commitment: lovingkindness and truth. The psalmist concludes the prayer of thanksgiving on a note of confidence that this commitment will endure forever. God is not only faithful to past promises, but will be faithful into the endless future. Paul speaks again of the mysterious ways of God in the plan of salvation. He argues that it will be through the very salvation of others that the first people (the Jews) will be brought to the gospel. God’s ways do not follow the path of human logic. Even though human beings cannot grasp God’s plan, it has meaning and purpose, and God’s plan for all creation will unfold in God’s way. The mysterious ways of salvation have brought Paul to praise the incomprehensible wisdom that determined them. Paul concludes by extolling

God as creator and source of all that is, as the sustainer through whom all creation continues to be, and as the goal for whom all things were made and to whom all things proceed. Jesus asks the disciples what people are saying about him; Who do they think he is? He seeks to discover how his words and actions are being understood, thus preparing the disciples for their own assessment of him. The answers given are all religious figures who have already died. The people seem to believe that Jesus is a prophetic figure come back from the dead. Speaking in the name of others, Simon Peter proclaims that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus insists that the only reason why Peter could make such a testimony of faith was that Jesus’ identity had been revealed to him by God. After this Jesus announces that his church will be founded on Peter. Reflection: The overarching theme derived from today’s readings is the question of insider-outsider. We see here that the divisions and barriers that emerge out of human experience have been shattered by the graciousness of God. Jesus’ openness to “the other” finds a precedent in the prophetic tradition. Isaiah spoke of a time when outsiders would join insiders in worshiping God, thus dissolving the categories of insider and outsider. He was, of course, referring to the age of eschatological fulfillment. This age dawned with the coming of Jesus. Jesus himself moved out of the constraints of his own cultural worldview, and he directs us to do the same. People are either excluded because of gender, culture, or religious perspective, or included only because they are able and willing to conform to discriminatory standards. In the reign of God, this should not be the case. People are accepted along with their own cultural profiles. God’s embrace first enclosed even those who rejected Jesus, and then God’s plan of salvation unfolded in a new way. An invitation to enter the kingdom was issued to the Gentiles, those who had been considered outsiders. If outsiders are now insiders, what has happened to the former insiders? Paul insists that they are still insiders. God has not simply shifted the identifying boundaries; God has dissolved them. In the interim between the dawning of the eschatological age and the end of time, the invitation to be included remains open to all.

Thought to consider this Week:

KEEP IT REAL Hypocrisy is the “practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one’s own behavior does not conform.” Jesus made it clear that he had no patience with such duplicity, as he called out those who spent more time criticizing the religious practices of others rather than living his law of love. Examine your attitudes and words today to see how often critical judgment of others is your prevailing state of mind. The list of small critiques, like little pinpricks, can easily deflate a joyful spirit. Ask for the grace to be centered in Divine love.

If you’ve been coming to Mass for a while, but are not Catholic, we invite you to look deeper into the Catholic faith. Come meet some faithful Catholics who love the Lord and would consider it a privilege to get to know you. Our parish will once again begin a set of sessions to share with others the truths of the Catholic faith and the fellowship of our church family. We invite you to learn what Catholics believe in an open and welcoming environment.

These sessions also are opportunities for you to ask those perplexing and difficult questions you may have about the Church.

Sessions will be held on Thursdays at 7:00 PM. This first session is scheduled to begin on September 17 in the Parish Center.

Please give Deacon Gohde a call if you have questions or would like further information at 215-699-4617, or email [email protected]

SOCIAL JUSTICE NEWS

Feed the Need NOW! Providing more than non-perishable food

It's so easy to become discouraged these days. You may be directly affected by the coronavirus or know of someone who has suffered some deleterious effects of the virus. Perhaps you have lost your job or your business has been severely affected by the virus, perhaps you are the endless caregiver for a spouse with Alzheimer’s disease, or you are the patient parent caring for a child with autism.

There are many more discouraging situations we could cite, but fortunately many of us have been blessed with good health, productive jobs, a steady income, and adequate food and shelter for our families. We thank the Lord for his steady, daily involvement in our lives to enable these positive outcomes and we pray and ask for the Lord’s involvement in helping those not so fortunate.

Over the last month or so, you have heard us describe multiple situations which cause a family to seek help at one of the several area food cupboards where St. Rose has delivered your food donations offered as part of St. Rose’s Feed the Need NOW campaign. Our parishioners have donated over 100,000 meals in the last calendar year and another 30,000 meals in just the last four months! Thank you does not seem to be enough of an accolade to express from those who have benefited from these donations. But, we want to thank you again.

Yet, the need to help those less fortunate in our community continues and is likely to continue at a higher than normal level for months to come. We, as a Parish community, have the opportunity to allay a discouraging day for someone needing food assistance.

Always needed are: canned food (meat-vegetables-fruit-soup), rice, beans, pasta & sauce, peanut butter & jelly, cereal and broth. During this pandemic, there is also a major need for other basic items such as toilet paper, paper towels, disinfectant wipes, cleaning supplies, diapers, baby formula and wipes, and back-to-school supplies.

If you have been participating in Feed the Need NOW, we ask for your continued participation. If you haven’t been participating, please consider purchasing some of the needed non-perishable food and items on your next shopping visit. Donations can be placed in the bins outside the Parish Center (available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week) and in the bins in the vestibule of the Church.

Saint Rose of Lima Feast Day Celebration

Sunday, August 23 This year, although we are not able to gather as a large group for the annual St. Rose Feast Day Mass & Breakfast, we invite our St. Rose Parish family to join together in celebrating the patron Saint of our parish.

On August 23, join in communion with the St. Rose Parish family for Sunday Mass. Attend Mass in person, or view the live-stream of the 9:30 a.m. Sunday Mass.

Then, be part of a Parish-wide Virtual Offering of Prayer and Hope! Take time that day with your family to pray The Lord's Prayer and to do a small act of kindness to help someone that is in need of the love and care that were hallmarks of St. Rose of Lima's life and work.

Apart, but together we can transform the world by sharing the love of Christ!

When we serve the poor and sick we serve Jesus. We must not fail to help our neighbors,

because in them we serve Jesus. - St. Rose of Lima
