We have some new DVDs in the parish library: • Defeating the Devil • Finding Fatima • Hand in Hand • Heaven is for Real • In the Footsteps of St. Peter • In the Footsteps of St. Paul • Joseph of Nazareth • The Healing Power of Beauty • The War Room Come by to check out these and other DVDs for your summer viewing pleasure! The library is open Thursdays, Noon - 2:00 pm and 1st and 3rd Sundays, 8:30 - 11:30 am in the Parish Center.
Our 9:30am choir typically takes off in the summer to relax and recharge. However, during this time of transition, our 9:30am choir has made the decision to support Fr. Des and our parish community and will be singing through the summer months. At times our ensemble may be small in numbers, but together our voices will be many! (photo is of a “combined” choir that sang on July 2)

Welcome Brunch Planning Committee Volunteers NEEDED NOW - come help, and have some FUN!
Three times per year this planning committee comes to-gether to put on a theme-based event that welcomes new parishioners to the parish, introduces them to our large assortment of ministries, provides them with an opportunity to meet Fr. Des, the Parish Staff, and other parishioners. And to have some FUN!
The Hospitality team is looking for a few good people to help plan and coordinate these events. Your participation can be as involved (or not!) as your time permits. Our next event is in late August and we can use your help starting with our planning session on August 2. For further information, please contact Richard at 916-443-8084 ext 114.

St. Francis Parish is a Catholic Christian Communitybuilding the reign of God in the spirit and path
of St. Francis and St. Clare of Assisi. We value vibrant liturgy and personal prayer as a way to worship God and celebrate life.
Challenged by the Holy Spirit, we reach beyond ourselves to care for our
neighbors,the poor, the marginalized,
and those alienated by our Catholic Church.
We respond to the command of Jesus to love by welcoming all, evangelizing,
supporting spiritual growth, and being Eucharist to each other.
We aspire to be witnesses and prophets advocating for justice in the world and in the
Church.
We are an inclusive community respecting the dignity of all persons
and supporting the journey of each person.
Parish Mission StatementYear of Mercy Prayer
Lord, teach us to be merciful like the heavenly Father.
Send forth your Spirit and consecrate each one of us with its anointing so that the
Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind.
We ask this through the intercession of Our Lady,
Mother of Mercy, and make this prayer through you, who live and reign with the
Father and the Holy Spirit¸ one God for ever
and ever.Amen.
The extract from the Gospel of St. Luke this Sunday is his version of the Lord’s Prayer. The Our Father is also in St. Matthew’s Gospel and his formulation is more familiar as it is the one we use in Liturgical Prayer and also in our private prayer. In St. Luke’s presentation the prayer formula is shorter but, in essence, it is the same. St. Luke recalls the prayer in the context of an extended teaching on the prayer of intercession. Interces-sion is part of the prayer of most people and yet, when we think about it, intercession is a puzzling phenomenon. It may be easier to say what we are not doing. We are not informing God about our needs. Neither are we somehow persuading God to be more gracious to us. St. Augustine is clearest on this when he wrote, “We pray not to change God, but to be changed ourselves”. Ultimately, prayer is a journey of the heart, as we open ourselves to whatever God in his goodness knows we need.
The Political Conventions taking place at this time remind us that Election Season is upon us. The Bishops of the United States issued a teaching document on the impor-tance of exercising the right to vote which is enshrined in our constitution, this document was first issued in 2007 and has been updated each election cycle. The document entitled Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship is available on the Catholic Conference of US Bishops website (usccb.org). In this statement, the Bish-ops do not intend to tell Catholics for whom or against whom to vote. Their purpose is to help Catholics form their conscience in accordance with God’s truth. They
From the Pastor’s Deskrecognize that the responsibility to make choices in politi-cal life rests with each individual in light of a properly formed conscience, and that participation goes well be-yond casting a vote in a particular election. The Bishops encourage Catholics throughout The United States to be active in the political process and to exercise the fran-
chise to vote. This comprehensive document is worthy of much reflection.
Although I appreciate the great welcome that I have received at St. Francis, I leave after Mass-es this weekend on vacation for one month! I travel firstly to Ireland to meet with family and friends. I use Ireland as a base and usually travel to England, where I also lived, to connect with more friends and relations. Together we usually go on a short break as family to Continental Europe, the final details of which have not yet been decided. I realize that I am extremely fortunate in being able to take such
a prolonged break and that I am in a very privileged posi-tion to do so. These reflections will resume when I return from vacation. In the meantime, let us continue to keep one another in prayer. I wish you all a blessed Summer and if you are able to take a vacation, I hope that you return refreshed and renewed.
Pax et Bonum. In the peace of St. Francis and St. Clare. - Fr. Des. Fr. Des will be on vacation from July 26 thru August 24.Forming Consciences can be found at http://bit.ly/1Sc6EvG

Aug 10 AMISTAD (Rated R)
Steven Spielberg’s ‘’Amistad’’ is based on a true story that chronicles the incredible jour-
ney of a group of enslaved Africans. who overtake their captive ship and attempt to return to their homeland. When the ship, La Amistad, is seized, the captives are brought to the United States where they are charged with murder and await their fate in prison. The case captures the imagination of the entire country, but or the men and women on trial, it
is simply a fight for the basic right of all humankind... freedom.
August 17 MAlCOlM X (Rated R)
Malcolm X is one of the great screen biogra-phies, celebrating the whole sweep of an
American life that began in sorrow and bottomed out on the streets and in prison before its hero reinvented himself. Watching the film, we are able to understood more clearly how we have the power to change our own lives, how fate doesn’t deal all of the cards. The film is inspirational and educational
- and it is also entertaining, as movies must be before they can be anything else. This is Denzel Washington at his best.
August 24 FRUTIVAlE STATION (Rated R)
Fruitvale Station is a drama centered on the tragic shooting of Oscar Grant, a vibrant
twenty-two year old Bay Area father who is sense-lessly gunned down by BART officers on New Year’s Day in 2009. His murder sent shockwaves through the nation after being captured on camera by his fel-low passengers. The film focuses our gaze across the longstanding divides in this persistently, cancerously
segregated American society.

BlACK lIVES MATTER Through the medium of film we travel beyond the limits of our indi-vidual experience. Our hearts see life through the eyes of another, and we empathize with their struggles. It then becomes possible for us to recognize our own blind spots and envision our possibilitie
Aug 3 SAY AMEN SOMEBODY (Rated R) Filled with gospel music that is sung by some of
the pioneers of modern gospel, who are now in their 70s and 80s. “Say Amen Somebody” is the stories of Thomas Dorsey and Willie Mae Ford Smith in their mission to bring gospel into worship reveals the depth of spirituality found in Black churches. The music so excites and uplifts that during theatre screenings the audience tended to get into the act.
We dare you to stay in your seats!
