HOLY FATHER’S INTENTION FOR JANUARY CHRISTIAN UNITY: That all Christians may be faithful to the Lord’s teaching by striving with prayer and fraternal charity to restore ecclesial communion and by collaborating to meet the challenges facing humanity.
PRO-CREATION A human person is both a body and a soul. Parents, through conception, contribute their genetic material to the physical body of the new person; God creates the soul out of nothing. The soul is infused into the body of this new person at the very moment of conception and will live forever. Tragically, 44 years today, on January 22, 1973, the United States Supreme Court issued its immoral Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion on demand. Since then, more than 56 million babies have been aborted, reflecting with heartbreaking magnitude what Pope Francis calls a “throwaway culture.” In the face of such evil, we are remind-ed time and again in Scripture to seek the Lord’s help, and as a people of faith we believe our prayers are heard. Better to light one candle than curse the darkness.
DAY OF PRAYER January 23 is a Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children. Please join us at St. Bernadette Church at 7 p.m. that day for the Deanery II Mass celebrated by our Bishop Burbidge (see page 4). We must all pray for others to see and respect the dignity of every life, from its very begin-ning (conception) to its natural end. As individuals, we can observe this day through penitential practices of prayer, fasting and/or giving alms. How appropriate that we should be with our bishop then.
Only with prayer…will the culture of death that surrounds us today be replaced with a culture of life.

MARCH FOR LIFE Later this week, on Friday, January 27, is the 37th annual March for Life in Washington, DC. Hundreds of thousands of people will peacefully call for the overturn of Roe v. Wade and an end to abortion. The theme for this year’s March is THE POWER OF ONE. Prayerfully consider joining me and your fellow parishioners for this important event. We’ve chartered a bus that will leave from in front of the church at 11:30 a.m. and return at approximately 3:30 p.m. (see page 5 for additional details). ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT What a beautiful time of year to remember that Jesus did not come to us on a throne, but in silence with only His mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, his father, Joseph, and some shep-herds. He was born in a stable lacking the comforts most new babies have. He is STILL here 2,000 years later, in silence, hidden in the Sacred Host. What a truly special and humble way Jesus chose come to us and stay with us! When we see Jesus hidden in the Host, we can begin to see Him in all other humans. He reminds us that we are never alone in our earthly struggles and that He will correct our human weaknesses and help us grow in love and holiness. He is waiting for us to visit! Think of spending just one hour per week with Our Lord. Sign up sheets for a new Adoration session running from February through April are in the back of the church; it would ideal to have least two Adorers per hour. ADULT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR WORKCAMP 2017
The Diocese of Arlington WorkCamp provides a life-changing opportunity for high school-aged Catholic youth to grow in their faith by serving in the community. WorkCamp 2017 will be based at Massaponax High School located in Fredericksburg, from June 24 to 30. Adult volunteers are needed in a variety of roles, from making brown bag lunches here at the parish to serving a short shift as a nurse or a security chaperone, to spending the entire week as a project supervisor or as a small-group leader. NATIONAL MARCH FOR LIFE The annual March for Life will be held in Washington, DC, on Friday, January 27. The rally starts at 12 noon on the grounds of the Washington Monument, near the corner of 15th Street and Constitution Avenue. THAT MAN IS YOU! That Man is You (TMIY) is an interactive, multimedia men’s program focused upon the development of authentic male leadership. Each lesson successively considers men in their relationship to God, to their spouse and to their children. ST. VINCENT de PAUL INITIATVE St. Vincent de Paul Society seeks your support in helping our needy neighbors achieve self-sufficiency. Following the guidance of our national leadership, we put priority on find-ing ways to not only help those in temporary difficulty get their heads above water, but — more importantly — that they stay financially secure. With a generous donation from a benefactor, we have established a St. Mary and St. Vin-cent (SMSV) Initiative for Self-Sustainment. Initial funding is $5,000, which admittedly will not go a long way but will help a good number of families. We will use this money for se-lected, screened families with an approved plan to pay for education and training to provide them with professional certification to qualify for a job paying a living wage with the promise of promotion. THANK YOU! I want to thank everyone who contributed to our extraordinary Christmas celebration. Under the leadership of Mary Petrino and Christine Kleiber, the Art and Environment Committee (Mary Martha Guild) outdid themselves in decorating the church, with the addition of lovely new creches inside and outside. Kudos to Eric Kleiber and his crew for their masterful creche construction. The music was marvelous thanks to our choirs, musicians and Director of Music David Elliott. Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, with the Mozart Mass and full orchestra, was the finest music I’ve heard in a parish in my 25 years as a priest! Thanks to my brother priests for celebrating Mass and hearing extra hours of confessions at the school and church during the days leading up to Christmas. Thanks to our parish staff for all of their work in the planning and preparing needed to make these things happen.
