Stewardship “Pilate again said to them, ‘Then what shall I do with the man whom you call the King of the Jews?’ And they cried out again, ‘Crucify him.’” – Mark 15:12-13

Jesus told us “whatever you do for the least of my brothers, you do for me.” Every day we are presented opportunities to help someone. Every day we have the opportunity to see the face of Jesus in others and be the face of Jesus to others. Pray for the strength and courage to stand up for those in need of our help.

From Our Pastor

Page 3 March 25, 2018

“Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches …crying out: "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” (Mark 11:8-9)

“And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak, dressed him in his own clothes, and led him out to crucify him.” (Mark 14:20)

Two roads. The first, covered with branches and cloaks with a crowd shouting blessings; the other, scarred by rocks, strewn with blood, sweat and teeming with hate.

I will go out on a limb and say most of us prefer the Jerusalem route. We’d like a life paved smooth by our plans, without rocks causing us to stumble or alter our route. Maybe this sounds familiar: school, perhaps post-graduate studies, a fulfilling job, marriage and, after a sufficient time children, then onwards to blissful retirement.

But what if God’s plan takes you on a different path? What if He is calling you to a different challenge? What if He wants more from you so that you can give more to others? Perhaps the job isn’t really everything; perhaps the family you longed for arrives in unexpected ways; perhaps God asks you to sacrifice all to serve His people. Perhaps He calls you to a love you thought you were incapable of giving. How do you move forward?

By letting Him enter your life, through the grace of the Sacraments and the love of community. The Eucharist is more than a sliver of bread; Confession is more than just words spoken in confidence. Our neighbors are more than people on our street. Christ enters into our lives through each and the more we partake of them, the more we feel His presence.

It is this presence which travels with us. Jerusalem and Golgotha are not really two separate roads, but stops along the way leading us to our Father. It is Christ’s grace which gives us direction; His grace which loosens the knots that bind us; and His grace, as the song goes, “will lead us home.”

~Fr. Posey

Weekly Reflection Readings: Procession—Mark 11:1-10 or John 12:12-16 Isaiah 50:4-7; Psalm 22; Philippians 2:6-11; Mark 14:1 — 15:47

http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/032518.cfm

Reflection Question: During this Holy Week, how can you put aside your own plans and give God permission to move in and through you?

Mary, Undoer of Knots

Pray for us Mother of fair love, I look to you.

Take into your hands the ribbon of my life and see the snare of knots that keeps me bound to sin, anxiety, and hopelessness.

I beg you, Mother, by your powerful intercession and long fingers of love and grace, undo the knots in my heart and in my life. Free me to love as Christ loves.

Ponder the Theme: Do you allow the graces of the sacraments to set you free from your entanglements?

THE HOLY TRIDUUM We have come to the threshold of The Holy Triduum—The Three Days. These are the days when God moves most profoundly among us, the days when we enter most deeply into God’s action in our lives. In word, symbol and gesture, we celebrate the mysteries of life, death and resurrection in company with the Risen Christ who shows us the way.

HOLY THURSDAY Mass of the Lord’s Supper

7:30 pm The Gospel leaves no room for doubt—the most humble service given in love surrounds the gift of Christ’s Body and Blood. Feet are washed—a demanding gesture, at once a little messy and awkward, like many of love’s demands. Wine and bread are consecrated—enough bread for tomorrow when even sacraments are silent. Procession with the Eucharist from the church building to the altar of repose in Heller Hall, accompanied by the Hispanic community. Adoration through the last hours of the day, until midnight, when Friday’s fast begins.

GOOD FRIDAY Stations of the Cross 3:00 pm English

Living Stations of the Cross 5:00 pm Spanish

Celebration of the Lord’s Passion 7:30 pm – Church

We come to stand with the women and the beloved disciple to listen to the Passion according to St. John. We pray with every man, woman and child in whom Christ is still suffering. We eat the Bread of Remembrance. A single cross is lifted high for our veneration together, then placed at the altar steps. Individual veneration of the cross takes place when the celebration of the Lord’s Passion is over. We leave an empty church in silence.

UNDERSTANDING THE TRIDUUM

Joining Us this Easter! Please welcome the new members of St. James who have been preparing to receive the sacraments at our Easter Vigil. Keep them in your prayers during this important moment on their faith journey (more pictures next week)

EASTER VIGIL 8:30 pm – Church

“Mother of all vigils.” This is St. Augustine’s name for tonight, a name that conveys how the church cherishes this night that is different from any other. A vigil is a night watch: people who would normally be home resting are awake, gathered in expectation, waiting for news. We wait in a great company, as Christians around the world keep watch. Nothing is ordinary about this evening we spend together. The Vigil is long and full.

It begins outside with Fire, kindled in the presence of our elect, our candidates and those who accompany them. The Paschal Candle is ignited from that fire and carried into the darkened church where all our candles are lit from that flame.

We hear the EXSULTET – THE EASTER PROCLAMATION. This is the night when Christ broke the prison-bars of death

and rose victorious from the grave.

In the light of the Easter candle, we listen to God’s Word, the story of our salvation. Women and men from our assembly come, one after another, to proclaim the Word. Readings announce how God saves His people throughout history, pursuing us with unrelenting affection. These stories take time to tell and to savor, and call us to respond in psalm and in prayer. The Gloria sounds again after Lenten silence, and the Alleluia. Lights are thrown on. Bells ring.

Led to faith by God's Word and by God's people, our elect come to be baptized. Water is blessed and poured over Sitthidol Doysrieiam, Huy Hoang Le, Robin Moser, Matthew Nellor and Amy White. They are wrapped in the white garment of Christ's life and are given the new light of Christ.

Called to remember and renew our own baptism, we stand to embrace the saving waters. We acclaim our candidates Laine Bowen-Watson, Jeremy Lowry and Lyndon Diaz as they reaffirm their baptism and, with the newly baptized, are sealed and confirmed with the oil of chrism.

Together we taste and savor the Bread of Life—Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of the Risen Lord.

The Mother of all Vigils enfolds the Christian people, nourishes our Christianity, sends us out to embody Christ to the world.

EASTER SUNDAY Masses at 7:30am, 9:00am, 10:30am, 12:00pm, 7:00 pm

Spanish Mass at 2:30 pm

The Great Sunday, the Feast of Fifty Days begins! The fifty days from Easter to Pentecost are celebrated as one feast day, The Great Sunday. The Easter candle is lit and God’s people may feel the waters of life throughout this season. New Catholics join their brothers and sisters at the Table of the Lord. A time of grace for our whole parish.

PENTECOST May 20 — The Birthday of the Church! The celebration of all God’s people!

Easter Basket Blessing March 31 9:00am In the Church Bring your Easter Baskets to church on Holy Saturday at 9:00am for a blessing of the “first foods” of Easter. This blessing—a long tradition of Christians in Poland and the Slavic countries to thank God for the gifts of creation and grace—marks the end of the Lenten fast when eggs were among the foods that could not be eaten. The blessed foods, including eggs and perhaps Easter bread, cheese, bacon, ham, butter, salt, and even a few jellybeans, are then taken home to be shared on Easter morning.

Adult Confirmation Opportunities Classes Start This Spring After Easter, St. James will be holding a series of three classes to prepare adult candidates for Confirmation. If you are a baptized Catholic who received First Communion but have not had the chance to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, the Church welcomes you to partake in this grace-filled Sacrament. Bishop Burbidge will celebrate Adult Confirmation Masses on Sunday, May 20 at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More in Arlington at 2:30pm and Sunday, June 10 at St. Andrew the Apostle in Clifton at 2:30pm. For more info, contact Fr. Cozzi at 703-532-8815 or [email protected].

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Help Needed at Food Distribution on April 6 On Friday evening, April 6, we are in need of additional volunteers to help us distribute food to the 125-150 families who receive fresh food and pantry basics. Adults, high schoolers, and middle schoolers who can help would be welcome. Middle schoolers must be accompanied by an adult. Contact Janet Qualters at 703-573-9170 or at [email protected] if you are interested in helping.

Do you want to become more involved in St. James Catholic Church? If you’re interested in giving of your time or have questions about our various groups, contact our volunteer coordinators at the rectory office, 703-532-8815, email [email protected], or visit our website at www.stjamescatholic.org/volunteer and download the form. Thank you!

40 Days for Life Concludes Today—Vigil at 3:00pm Come join us on Sunday, March 25 at 3:00pm at 9:00 S. Washington Street as we close this campaign with prayers. March 30, Good Friday – Way of the Cross for Victims of Abortion, 12:00 pm, 900 S. Washington Street. We will join pro-lifers nationwide to contemplate the suffering of Jesus Christ at our own modern day Golgotha, the abortion center. Contact [email protected] for details about our April meeting on April 5 and other upcoming events.

Focus on Hunger “Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You, or thirsty, and give You something to drink?” This Lenten Season, the Social Outreach Committee has reconfirmed its Focus on Hunger. These are some of the ways you have served the hungry over the past year, through your donations and your service: On the first Friday of the month 125-150 families come to pray

together and receive groceries from St. James Parish. Every second and fourth Tuesdays St. James Meals on Wheels

teams deliver meals to individuals in the Falls Church area. On the second Wednesday of each month, a volunteer group from

St. James prepares and serves dinner at Christ House, the diocesan shelter and soup kitchen in Alexandria.

St. James parishioners regularly provide dinners and bag lunches to residents of the City of Falls Church Shelter.

And throughout the year, St. James’ parishioners respond to requests to provide food for specific activities directed at serving the poor in our area.

Thank you!

Wondering How You Can Continue to Support the St. James Social Outreach Programs in 2018? Come to one of the Social Outreach Committee meetings and see how you can help in one of St. James’ Social Outreach ministries. The next meeting will be held on April 12 at 7:00 pm in Knecht Conference Room (doors 8 & 9). You can also provide financial support: Designate a monthly or one-time contribution via Faith Direct, Make a check out to St. James Church designating it for “Social
