THIS IS THE CUP OF MY BLOOD
We at St. Lawrence Church are blessed to be able to celebrate
the Eucharist each day. And at various times, we are also blessed
to celebrate feast days of martyrs. Celebrating the feasts of mar-
tyrs has helped me to appreciate more the meaning of the Sacra-
ment of the Eucharist.
The word martyr comes from the Greek and means to witness.
When a martyr offers his life for Jesus, he (or she) gives witness
to his faith and love for Him. To experience the witness of a
martyr is a powerful event. The martyr’s witness of faith and
love challenges the observers to examine their own lives and to
question the degree of their own faith and love for Jesus. There
is an ancient saying of the Church, “The blood of martyrs is the seed of Christians.” I can understand better
how when martyrs shed their blood it can move others to greater effort in faith and love and how it can be an
invitation to believe to those who have not yet placed their faith in Jesus.
I have been thinking, too, about how the blood of Jesus on the cross and in the Eucharist is the seed of Chris-
tians. In a way, Jesus on the cross was a martyr as He displayed His love for us and for His Father. His wit-
ness moves and challenges us. It likewise heals and empowers us.
In the early Church, in the catacombs, Mass would be celebrated upon the sarcophagi of the martyrs in a
sense uniting the witness of the martyr to the witness of Jesus on the cross. The custom long continued of
placing the relic of a martyr in the altars of our churches.
The words of consecration in the Mass are words of witness on the part of Jesus. When the priest says, “This
is My Body . . . This is my blood,” Jesus’ self offering on the cross for us and for the Father is made present
and offers us a most powerful witness.
THE MORNING PRAYER AND MASS AT ST. LAWRENCE CHURCH
I would like to remind you all that we do have Mass each morning in our chapel at 8 am from Monday to Fri-
day and at 9 am on Saturdays. We also do the Morning Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours, the official
prayer of the Catholic Church, each day one half hour before the morning Mass.
God bless.

UNBOUND SAYS “THANK YOU!”
I was pleased to be asked by Unbound to preach on its
behalf at St. Lawrence Church this past weekend. My
heart is full of gratitude not only for the generosity you
have shown to children and elders in our program, but
also for the warm welcome and gracious assistance that
was extended to me. I pray that you also will receive
clear signs of God’s providence in your own lives.

SPECIAL COMBINED COLLECTION
A Letter from the Bishop
This month, our parishes are asked to take up a special
national collection for three distinct and important caus-
es.
As the world is becoming more secular, the Catholic
voice needs to be heard clearly and proudly. The Catho-
lic Communications Campaign supports efforts to pro-
claim the Gospel in the United States and abroad through
the use of social media and other avenues. Our Church is
called to evangelize and your support of the Catholic
Communications Campaign does just this by promoting
the joy of our faith to many across the globe.
Like the Catholic Communications Campaign, the Black
and Indian Mission Collection also serves as a great
tool for ongoing evangelization efforts. Your generosity
supports the pastoral work of those who bring the Catho-
lic faith to Indian reservations, urban centers and Alaskan
Native parishes and mission schools. Your prayers and
your financial support make a world of difference.
As Catholic University of America is the national uni-
versity of the Catholic Church, it educates clergy, reli-
gious and young men and women throughout the coun-
try. Your participation in this month’s collection helps
underwrite the financial aid program at Catholic Univer-
sity so that it continues to be a viable option for those
who would not otherwise be able to attend.
These collections, though diverse in their outreach, are
examples of great Catholic work that impact many of our
brothers and sisters in Christ. Your generous support will
help strengthen these efforts, and so I hope you will par-
ticipate in this collection when it is taken in your parish.
This collection is being taken up this weekend here at
St. Lawrence Church.

ADVERTISE YOUR COMPANY
Looking for another way to advertise and
promote your company? Consider placing
an ad on the back cover of our parish bulle-
tin. It’s easy! Just call 800-524-0263, choose an ad size
and length of run time. Just think — many eyes would
see your company’s information every weekend and a
portion of the advertising cost would go back to St. Law-
rence Church. A win-win!

TITHING IS GOD’S PLAN FOR GIVING.
Biblically a tithe means 10%. All are asked to consider
tithing and return 10% of our income to the Lord (5% to
the parish, 5% to God’s other charities) in gratitude. The
spiritual practice of tithing disposes us to make God first
in every area of our lives! The aim is to secure not the
tithe, but the tither. Not the gift, but the giver — for God!
Tithing Income July 7, 2019 $ 8,723.00
Tithing Income July 8, 2018 $10,150.00
Reflection: “Jesus said to him, ‘Go and do like-
wise.’” (Luke 10:37)
This was Jesus’ command at the end of the Good Samari-
tan story. Did you know that the Samaritans and Jews
despised each other. The moral of the story is to love our
neighbor. That means loving someone you may not know
or someone that looks different than you or someone that
you don’t like. All without expecting anything in return.
From the Pastor: “I am edified by your faithfulness and
generosity in giving.”
From a Parishioner of St. Titus Parish in East Norris-
ton Twp., PA: “When I think of everything the parish
does to help us all get along in life with God and each
other, I want to be a part of it. Tithing makes sure that
something of ‘me’ is part of the parish’s work.”
GOD WANTS TO BE KNOWN
The Old Testament reading
from Deuteronomy praises
God for inscribing the com-
mandments in our very bod-
ies. God’s law is not distant
or foreign, but a natural part of us. In his letter to the Co-
lossians, Saint Paul echoes Moses, praising God for be-
coming one of us. The truly human, flesh-and-blood Je-
sus reminds us that God always wants to be recognizable
and familiar to us. Jesus, who is also truly God, wants to
be on intimate terms with each of us. God’s passionate desire to be known by us is almost too
wonderful to take in. Luke’s Gospel helps us understand
how to respond. The Good Samaritan parable provides
practical advice for those who believe in God’s intimate
love for them and want to share that love with others.
