ARROGATE 'A SUPERSTAR IN THE MAKING'By Claire Novak

What a difference a year makes.

Last season Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert

saw Triple Crown winner American Pharoah defeated

for the first time in his 3-year-old campaign by Keen

Ice, with a brutal beat in the Travers Stakes (gr. I).

This year Baffert showed up with Juddmonte

Farms' Arrogate—a colt previously untested in grad-

ed stakes competition—and blew apart the 3-year-

old division with the fastest Travers performance

in 147 years of history and a track record for 1 1/4

miles at Saratoga Race Course.

"Last year you probably could have poured me

out of a shot glass," Baffert recalled. "We were pretty

dejected. I felt bad for the horse. The horse got beat.

He ran hard. ... He ran his heart out. So we were sit-

ting here and it was just emotional. The whole town

came out to see him do something like Arrogate did

today. We were all looking for that turn for home,

cheer up, great end of a movie theme. ... I'm just glad

to be back here with another chance at it.

"And my horse ... what he did today is pretty

incredible. He looks like a superstar in the making.

I think the fans will remember watching a horse like

this, because I know, when I see performances like this,

they're very rare."

With jockey Mike Smith in the irons from post 1 in a

field of 13, Arrogate broke like a shot and set quick frac-

tions of :23.23 and :46.84 through a half-mile. He ran

three-quarters in 1:10.85, then opened up by daylight

coming off the final turn. Baffert stablemate American

Freedom followed Arrogate the whole way around, but

was no match down the Saratoga stretch.

Clicking off a 1:35.52 mile, the son of Unbridled's

Song blazed under the wire in a final time of 1:59.36,

with a 13 1/2-length margin of victory.

"We headed for home and he picked it up when I

asked him, ..." Smith said. "I got after him just a little bit,

to keep his mind on business, and I was amazed at how

he lengthened his stride and opened up."

The Steve Asmussen-trained Gun Runner completed

the trifecta, while Preakness (gr. I) winner Exaggerator,

favored at 2-1 on the merits of his Betfair.com Haskell

Invitational (gr. I) score last time out on the Monmouth

Park slop, was never a factor and finished 11th. Bel-

mont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets (gr. I) winner

Creator, also trained by Asmussen, came in seventh.

"We ran into a freak today," Asmussen said. "I

thought 2:02 would win it."

Arrogate capped a huge day at Saratoga for his

connections. Earlier on the card, Juddmonte took the

Sword Dancer Invitational (gr. IT) with Flintshire, and

Baffert sent Charles Chu's Drefong to win the Ketel One

King's Bishop (gr. I).

Bred in Kentucky by Clearsky Farms out of the

Distorted Humor mare Bubbler and consigned by his

breeder to the 2014 Keeneland September yearling

sale, Arrogate was a $560,000 purchase by Juddmon-

te—which typically excels with turf contenders, many

of them homebreds. Prince Khalid Abdullah decided to

have Baffert select and train horses for his California

program after losing the late Bobby Frankel as his West

Coast conditioner.

"After Bobby died, we didn't have any horses in

California, and (Prince Khalid) said he'd like to have

some horses in California," said Juddmonte president

John Chandler. "Obviously, he chose Bob. Our breed-

ing program didn't quite produce the sort of horses

that Bob trained, and he said, 'Well, buy some horses,

then.' ... The prince trusted (Bob) to do that. And this

turned out pretty big today.

"He's obviously the best (dirt) colt we've ever had."

sale. She is Hip 226.

Arrogate, off at odds of 11-1, returned $25.40,

$12.60, and $8.40. American Freedom paid $6.70 and

$4.60, while Gun Runner brought $6.80. Completing

the full order of finish were Gift Box, Governor Malibu,

Connect, Creator, My Man Sam, Destin, Forever d'Oro,

Exaggerator, Jim Dandy (gr. II) upsetter Laoban, and

131-1 shot Anaximandros. Majesto was scratched.

Arrogate will ship back to Southern California Aug. 29,

and could train up to the Nov. 5 Breeders' Cup Classic

(gr. I) at Santa Anita Park.

"That was a pretty big jump that he made today,"

Baffert said. "I'm sure that all his (speed figures) and

sheet numbers are going to be off the chart. There's no

rush. I think that he's the kind of horse that, after what

he did today, he could go into the Breeders' Cup fresh

like Pharaoh did. I don't think that's a big problem for

FLINTSHIRE SKIMS RAIL TO SWORD DANCER REPEATBy Jeremy Balan

Juddmonte Farms' Flintshire got the most patient of

rides from jockey Javier Castellano, shot through on

the rail at the top of the stretch, and easily held off

a late drive from Money Multiplier to dominate once

again on U.S. soil in the $1 million Longines Sword

Dancer (gr. I) Aug. 27 at Saratoga Race Course.

The 6-year-old Dansili horse trailed the field for

much of the 1 1/2-mile trek, then moved up in the

final turn, but had nowhere to run behind a wall of

horses. Then Juddmonte stablemate Inordinate, who

set fast fractions early in the race, appeared to make

a sharp move to his right under jockey Aaron Gryder

to open up space for the 1-5 favorite.

"I am very lucky and fortunate," Castellano said.

"The way I rode this horse, (I tried) to save some

ground. Everyone ended up in the same position and

I had to make my own decision and use my best judg-

ment and it worked out. I was very lucky to go and

cut through on the rail and accelerate. He is a phe-

nomenal horse. I've never seen any horse with that

much acceleration on the grass."

With clear sailing on the inside, the Chad Brown-

trained Flintshire broke away from the pack with ease

and hit the wire in 2:23.45 on firm turf, unthreatened

by the field late. An inquiry was filed by Mike Maker,

the trainer of Roman Approval, who was contacted at

the top of the lane by Inordinate, but no change was

made.

Inordinate set fractions of :23.18, :46.16, 1:11.04,

and 1:36.11 through a mile and Grand Tito took over

to run 1 1/4 miles in 2:00.74.

"Aaron Gryder did a fabulous job as the paceset-

ter," Brown said. "Still, (Flintshire) had trouble in the

back. Javier decided to go on the inside and it turned

out to be the right decision. I've never seen anything

like him outside of Lady Eli. He's the greatest horse

I've ever seen."

The margin of victory was 1 3/4 lengths, and Mon-

ey Multiplier was another 2 3/4 lengths clear of Twi-

light Eclipse. Grand Tito, Inordinate, Roman Approval,

and Applicator completed the

order of finish.

The winner paid $2.40 to

win and $2.10 to place. Show

betting was not offered. Mon-

ey Multiplier brought $2.90 to

place.

It was Flintshire's fourth

straight U.S. win, following

last year's Sword Dancer, the

June 11 Woodford Reserve

Manhattan (gr. IT), and the

July 30 Bowling Green (gr. IIT).

With his eye on the Longines

Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT), a

race in which he ran second

in 2014, he will most likely

start next in the Oct. 1 Joe

Hirsch Turf Classic (gr. IT) at

DREFONG LEADS ALL THE WAY IN KING'S BISHOPBy Claire Novak

Charles Chu's Drefong broke alertly from the

outside in a field of 12, took the lead, and never

faltered en route to victory in the $500,000 Ketel One

King's Bishop (gr. I) Aug. 27 at Saratoga Race Course.

The Gio Ponti colt got away with an easy :23.11

opening quarter with a length advantage and had

plenty left to give under Mike Smith once the field

turned for home after a half in :45.85.

"I didn't even hit him. I just rode him with my

hands, with my whip down," said Smith. "He ran big

today."

Economic Model made a four-wide move to finish

second, but could not threaten the winner, who

drove clear by 3 1/4 lengths. Drefong shipped from

California for trainer Bob Baffert on a three-race win

streak to ace his step up from July 4 allowance com-

pany at Santa Anita Park. The final time for seven

furlongs was 1:21.25.

"The horse has always been incredibly fast," said

Baffert, who went on to win the Travers (gr. I) later on

the card with Arrogate. "We freshened him up and

this was the race we were looking forward to. He's

a quiet horse, he's a beautiful horse. When he left

there and I saw the first

quarter in :23, I thought

that was a good pace.

It wasn't too taxing on

him. I'm proud of him,

he ran so well."

Sent off as the 3-1

favorite, Drefong re-

turned $8.80, $5.60, and

$4.20. Economic Model

paid $7.90 and $6, and

Noholdingback Bear

brought $9.30.

"I've always thought

he was cut out to be

this kind of horse,

but he had to prove

it today," said Baffert.

"...I'm trying to get him

to the Breeders' Cup

Sprint (gr. I) and I didn't want to run him in the Bing

Crosby (gr. I), I had the other horse in there (win-

ner Lord Nelson). This was the last chance (to run

against straight) 3-year-olds."

Completing the order of finish were Summer Rev-

olution, Mind Your Biscuits, Fish Trappe Road, Tale

of S'avall, Bird Song, Tom's Ready, Rated R Super-

star, Mohaymen, and Star Hill. Star Hill was vanned

off with swelling in a leg to be examined back at the

barn, according to a New York State Veterinarian.

Jazzy Times was scratched because of a foot bruise.

Drefong was bred in Kentucky by Frederick M.

Allor, Michael T. Barnett, and Anthony M. Warren-

der out of the Ghostzapper mare Eltimaas. He sold

for $200,000 to Woods Edge Farm as a weanling

consigned by Blackburn Farm to the Keeneland

November 2013 breeding stock sale. Chu's Tanma

Corp. acquired him for $450,000 from the Woods

Edge consignment to the 2014 Keeneland September

yearling sale.

Eltimaas, a $77,000 Machmer Hall buy from agent

Blackburn Farm at the Keeneland November 2013

breeding stock sale, has a yearling filly by Animal

Kingdom who will be offered as Hip 325 from the

Select Sales consignment to the upcoming Keene-

land September sale. The mare is in foal to Candy

NYQUIST WORKS AT SAN LUIS REYBy Jeremy Balan

After noticing Reddam Racing's Nyquist was get-

ting a little skinny at Del Mar, trainer Doug O'Neill

decided to send the Uncle Mo colt north on Interstate

5 to train at the much more relaxed San Luis Rey

Training Center for a while to prepare for his next

start in the Sept. 25 Pennsylvania Derby (gr. II).

The Bonsall, Calif., training track has suited

Nyquist well, according to O'Neill; the colt has already

put on 50 pounds since relocating there. He also put

in his first work following a fourth-place run in the

Betfair.com Haskell Invitational (gr. I), when he ran a

mile in 1:45 4/5 at San Luis Rey Aug. 27 under regular

exercise rider Jonny Garcia.

"He was strong out there, and came back and

cooled out great," O'Neill said after the drill. "We're

just getting him away from the racing. We love Del

Mar, but with the five days of racing each week, the

hustle is on. There's a lot of action. Here, it's much

more relaxed."

The trainer said the 2016 Kentucky Derby Pre-

sented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner and champion

2-year-old male of 2015 will work three more times

before shipping to Parx Racing for the $1 million

Pennsylvania Derby. And for the time being, he'll stay

at San Luis Rey, which sits about 30 miles north of

Del Mar and about 100 miles south of Santa Anita

Park. O'Neill has a string of seven horses at the train-

ing track.

"He was going through a growth spurt—getting a

little taller," O'Neill said. "He was eating well and his

energy level was good, but he was getting a little thin.

We tried out San Luis Rey and couldn't be happier.

"He's had a pretty long campaign, so he deserves

some time away to relax a little."

Nyquist is chasing his first victory since Exaggera-

tor snapped his eight-race win streak in the May 21

Preakness Stakes (gr. I), where he finished third. The

Haskell fourth was his next start.

Back at Del Mar, Hronis Racing's 2015 champion

3-year-old filly Stellar Wind logged another work in

preparation for the Oct. 1 Zenyatta Stakes (gr. I) at

Santa Anita. The Curlin filly covered a half-mile in :48

3/5 under the watchful eye of trainer John Sadler.

It was her second workout since upset victory over

Beholder in the July 30 Clement L. Hirsch (gr. I).

Another notable workout at Del Mar was Sorren-

to (gr. II) winner Champagne Room, who covered a

half-mile in :46 1/5, the fastest of 62 moves at the

distance Saturday. The Broken Vow filly trained by

Peter Eurton is expected to be one of the favorites in

a loaded Del Mar Debutante (gr. I) Sept. 3. BH

CAVORTING TAKES OVER IN PERSONAL ENSIGNBy Eric Mitchell

Stonestreet Stables' Cavorting came out on top in

a cavalry charge down the stretch of the $750,000

Personal Ensign Stakes (gr. I), the first of six grade I

races on the Aug. 27 Travers Day card at Saratoga

Race Course.

The daughter of Bernardini beat 9-5 favorite Curali-

na by a half length under jockey Javier Castellano.

Forever Unbridled was third by a neck. The final time

in the 1 1/8-mile race was 1:48.61.

Only five were entered in the Personal Ensign, but

the field was deep with four grade I winners going

to battle. After the break, Castellano took Cavorting

back and down to the rail and bided his time as I'm

a Chatterbox led the field through opening fractions

of :23.98, :48.77, and 1:12.64. Tracking close behind

throughout were Curalina, Forever Unbridled, and

longshot Paid Up Subscriber, who is a grade II winner

and grade I placed.

Coming out of the turn, Cavorting was still at the

back of the field while a four-horse cavalry charge

lined up across the track. As I'm a Chatterbox began

backing up down on the rail, Cavorting hit the after-

burners. She caught the leaders at the sixteenth pole

and thwarted Curalina's strong drive to the wire.

"She ran terrific," said trainer Kiaran McLaughlin.

"Javier got her back and the others went four wide.

He saved ground, and I think that was key to the race.

That was an important move he made into the first

turn."

Castellano said he had pull Cavorting back after

the break, feeling she wanted to rush toward the

lead.

"My concern was that it was going to be two turns

for her for the first time, and at a mile and an eighth,"

he said. "I had to save some ground and save some-

thing for the end. If I got too far back, I wasn't going

to catch them because they were running pretty

quick. Turning for home, the way she did, it was

amazing. I absolutely felt pure power."

McLaughlin said he was not sure whether Cavort-

ing will go straight to the Breeders' Cup World Cham-

pionships for her next start or run back at Belmont

Park. The Personal Ensign is a Breeders' Cup Chal-

lenge "Win and You're In" race for the Breeders' Cup

Distaff (gr. I).

Jockey John Velazquez on Curalina said the race

unfolded as anticipated, but without as much early

speed.

"There was no speed," he said. "The only speed

was the horse in front of us (I'm a Chatterbox).

(Curalina) ran hard, she just got beat."

Cavorting paid $6.90, $3.40, and $2.50. Curalina

paid $3 and $2.20, while Forever Unbridled paid $2.50.

A. P. Indian won his second consecutive grade I

sprint in record time in the Priority One Jets Fore-

go Stakes Aug. 27 at Saratoga Race Course. The final

time for seven furlongs was 1:20.99.

Green Lantern Stables' homebred 6-year-old

Indian Charlie gelding was the even-money favorite

on the basis of his two graded stakes wins since July,

when he won the Belmont Spring Championship

Stakes (gr. III) and followed that by winning the Alfred

G. Vanderbilt (gr. I) by 1 1/4 lengths.

Longshot Chief Lion and jockey Florent Geroux

grabbed the lead early and took the field through

fractions of :22.83 and :45.35 while A. P. Indian

stalked him, following close through the turn, and

then took the advantage at the top of the stretch.

From there, the winner widened his margin to 2 1/2

lengths under jockey Joe Bravo and never got a seri-

ous challenge. Tamarkuz finished second, followed

by Stallwalkin' Dude.

A. P. Indian bested the previous stakes record of

1:21 held by Quick Call (1988), Housebuster (1991),

and Emcee (2012). The final time was also.59 off the

Saratoga track record of 1:20.40 set by Darby Creek

Road on Aug. 8, 1978.

Trainer Arnaud Delacour

said the Belmont Sprint Cham-

pionship was a turning point

for A. P. Indian.

"He came back so much

more confident for some

reason," he said. "Ever since,

he has been improving and

consistent. I told Joe nothing. I

just asked him what he wanted

to do and he told me what he

wanted to do, and I said, 'Good

luck.'

"Obviously, the horse was

very fit. Six furlongs or sev-

en-eighths, there isn't that

much more difference. He has

enough tactical speed to go six

and enough stamina to keep

going at seven, so it's pretty

amazing," Delacour added.

Bravo, who has been aboard for A. P. Indian's

three stakes wins this year, said the gelding stayed

relaxed throughout the entire race.

"It's really a pleasure to be able to ride a horse like

that," he said. "It just shows the control and different

dimensions he possesses. I learned more and more

about him after his first race; just getting used to

his habits and getting them out of the way. He ran a

huge race at a mile and sixteenth and got beat by a

nose, so that made me really feel comfortable with

him. The way he did it so relaxed just makes you feel

so comfortable. It took him a little time to develop

but wow, he's just enjoying the game."

A. P. Indian paid $4.20, $3.50, and $2.60. Tama-

rkuz paid $14.20 and $8.80, while Stallwalkin' Dude

paid $4.80.

The Forego is a Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and

You're In" race for the Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I), and

A. P. Indian is now the leading sprinter on the East

Coast.

The winner is out of multiple stakes winner and

graded-placed runner Ender's Sister, a daughter of

A.P. Indy who has also produced grade II winner Tiz

Shea D and graded-placed winner Its All Relevant. BH

Since moving to New York and to the barn of Thom-

as Morley, Haveyougoneaway has been a different

mare and she took another step forward Aug. 27 with

a hard-earned victory in the $500,000 Ballerina (gr. I)

at Saratoga Race Course.

The 5-year-old daughter of Congrats made a

simultaneous move in the turn with fellow longshot

By the Moon and just outfinished her rival to win by a

half-length after the pair passed tiring favorite Carina

Mia in the final furlong.

With jockey John Velazquez aboard for the first

time, Gary Barber and Sequel Racing's Haveyougo-

neaway finished off the seven furlongs in 1:21.63

for her third straight victory, following scores in the

Dancin Renee July 3 and the Honorable Miss (gr. II)

July 27.

The Ballerina is her first grade I victory and also

the first top-level win for Morley.

"What a thrill," Morley said. "You can't beat that.

It's Saratoga (and) we just won a grade I. It's as good

as it gets. It really is."

The pace was set by Paulassilverlining and Carina

Mia, who dueled to fractions of :23.39 and :45.54

through a half-mile as the top two

finishers stalked. Carina Mia took

command in the turn, but lugged

out in the stretch, forcing By the

Moon to duck slightly inside,

while Haveyougoneaway stayed

in the clear outside.

"Perfect trip," Velazquez said.

"She broke well and got in good

position. I was just trying to follow

Joel Rosario (on Carina Mia). Then,

all of a sudden, he took off at the

half-mile pole and I sat there and

decided to wait. I didn't want to

make a premature move. When

I asked at the quarter pole, she

responded right away."

Carina Mia held for third, fol-

lowed by Birdatthewire, Paulassil-

verlining, Wavell Avenue, Spelling

Again, Sheer Drama, Sarah Sis, and Linda Linda, to

complete the order of finish.

Off as the 10-1 fifth choice, Haveyougoneaway

paid $22, $8.30, and $4.80 across the board. By the

Moon brought $10.80 and $6.30, and Carina Mia

delivered $2.70 to show.

"She ran a winning race today," said Michelle

Nevin, who trains By the Moon. "I'm very happy with

her. It was a big effort. She fits in well with these

(grade I) horses."

Bred in New York by Andy Beadnell and Susan

Beadnell out of the Wiseman's Ferry mare One Wise

Cowgirl, Haveyougoneaway has an 11-4-6 record

from 26 starts and $897,425 in earnings.

The victory punched Haveyougoneaway's ticket to

the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (gr. I) at Santa

Anita Park through the Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win

and You're In" series.

"Now obviously we'll have to plot our route to Cal-

ifornia carefully," Morley said. "She's run three times

in pretty quick succession. She ran at the back end of

Belmont and won a (stakes), came up here and won

opening week, and then came back and won the Bal-

lerina in just under four weeks. She's had three big

efforts in relatively quick succession, so we might just

train up to the Breeders' Cup." BH

Lady Eli lost nothing in her defeat by three-quarters

of a length to Courtlandt Farm's homebred Strike

Charmer in the $400,000 Woodford Reserve Ballston

Spa (gr. IIT) Aug. 27.

The previously undefeated daughter of Divine

Park made a remarkable recovery from a potentially

life-threatening bout with laminitis and even more

incredibly returned to training in top form. Her first

loss came in a 1 1/16-mile Ballston Spa, won by Strike

Charmer in stakes record time of 1:38.77.

Strike Charmer won her first stakes for trainer

Mark Hennig since taking the May 14 Beaugay (gr.

IIIT) at Belmont Park. She is the first foal and the only

stakes winner produced by the stakes-winning Storm

Cat daughter Cat Charmer, who Courtlandt also bred

and raced.

Ridden by regular rider Irad Ortiz Jr., Lady Eli

was given her usual stalking trip, sitting back in fifth

for the first half-mile. Longshot Sympathy took the

lead midway through the first turn and took her six

challengers through quick fractions of :22.43 and

:45.55. Ortiz moved Lady Eli away from the rail down

the backstretch and started pushing her for more

through the second turn. She responded and, coming

four-wide into the stretch, hooked up with Sentiero

Italia.

On the far outside, free and clear, were Strike

Charmer and jockey Junior Alvarado, who quick-

ly erased the lead Lady Eli and Sentiero Italia had

worked so hard to gain. Lady Eli kept fighting and

finished a half-length ahead of Sentiero Italia.

"I didn't know they'd go that fast early, but we

were where we needed to be with the pace being

that way," said Hennig. "When Junior got off of her

last time he told me, 'If I get her outside, she really

wants to punch.' He said she was making up ground

last time and she really wasn't even fully extending

herself. He felt like having learned something from

riding her once, it would be wise to just kind of sit. ...

Lady Eli took the overland route, and I thought he did

a great job of just kind of hiding out behind her and

then trying to pounce. We were fortunate enough to

run her down today."

Hennig had plenty of praise for

the runner-up.

"It's an amazing story that she's

come back from what she had," he

said. "Any time that happens with a

horse we all feel it in the industry,

when one of our best horses suffers

something like that. When horses

founder it's such a struggle and it's

a great story that she did make it

back, but we don't mind raining on

her parade today."

loss but happy to have his star, the

2014 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies

Turf (gr. IT) and 2015 Belmont Oaks

Invitational Stakes (gr. IT) winner,

back in training.

"Irad gave her a little bit of a wide

trip but really didn't want to get in

trouble with this filly," said Brown.

The $200,000 Pat O'Brien Stakes (gr. II) didn't look

like a top race with an automatic berth to the

Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (gr. I) on the line Aug. 27 at

Del Mar.

Only three horses made it to the gate for the

seven-furlong event, and Los Pollos Hermanos Racing

and Jay Em Ess Stable's Masochistic made it look like

a morning breeze.

The speedy son of Sought After popped out of

the gate under jockey Tyler Baze, took a 2 1/2 length

advantage after a first quarter in :22.65, and cruised

to the wire, just more than three tenths off the track

record, without any asking.

"The plan? Just to go out there and have a good

breeze," Baze said. "He's faster than these horses, so

I just wanted to get him out of there and get him in

his stride. Then I wanted to stay out of his way. I was

a good passenger today. It was a lot of fun."

Vyjack, 5 1/2 lengths back early, rallied past Index-

ical easily to pick up place honors, but finished an

unthreatening 3 3/4 lengths back, 7 1/2 clear of the

third-place finisher. Outside Nashville and Cautious

Giant scratched.

"He tried," said Flavien Prat, who rode Vyjack in

the three-time graded stakes winner's first start for

trainer Phil D'Amato. "That other horse was just too

fast. But (Vyjack's) next race will be longer. That will

be good for him."

Masochistic covered a half-mile in :45.01, six fur-

longs in 1:08.22, and hit the wire in 1:20.31 with his

ears pricked. Solar Launch holds the track record, at

1:20 flat, which dates back to 1990.

"I didn't have any anxious moments during the

running of the race," said trainer Ron Ellis, who also

said the California-bred gelding will train up to the

TwinSpires Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I). "Tyler got

him to relax beautifully coming out of there and they

were just loping along. He disappointed at this track

last year at low odds (in the grade I Bing Crosby),

but this year he's a different horse. Last year he just

wanted to run as fast and as far as he could."

The winner paid $2.40. No place or show wagering

was offered, but a 50-cent trifecta paid $1.15.

Masochistic has an 8-2-0 record from 13 starts,

with earnings of $772,550. The Pat O'Brien was his

third graded win, following scores in the 2015 Kona

Gold (gr. II) and Triple Bend (gr. I). BH

Black Heart Bart easily captured the Memsie Stakes

(Aus-I) Aug. 27 at Caulfield, the first group I race

of the 2016-17 season in Australia.

Ridden by Brad Rawiller for trainer Darren Weir,

who sent three other runners in the race, the favored

6-year-old son of Blackfriars scored by 1 1/4 lengths

over former Australian Oaks (Aus-I) winner Rising Ro-

mance, with Weir-trained Mahuta third. Weir's 2015

Melbourne Cup (Aus-I) victor Prince of Penzance

finished 11th after a troubled start.

Black Heart Bart waited behind a swift pace be-

fore taking over, and stamped himself as a possible

threat to star mare Winx in the Cox Plate (Aus-I). She

is the hot favorite for Australia's premier weight-for

age event Oct. 22.

"He's an absolute ripper—a proper racehorse,''

Weir told the Melbourne Herald-Sun of Black Heart

Bart, who posted his second group I win after tak-

ing the Darley Goodwood Handicap (Aus-I) in May.

"This horse is bloody bomb-proof. He's sound. He's

not much to look at—big and raw boned. He's just a

great racehorse."

Black Heart Bart covered 1,400 meters (about

seven furlongs) in 1:23.93 on turf rated good to take

his record to 13-9-2 from 32 starts.

Crossbow was represented by his first winner

when Crossbow Huntress took the first race at

Evangeline Downs Aug. 26.

Ridden by Alfredo Contreras as the 8-5 favorite,

the Texas-bred filly won the $23,000 maiden special

weight by 2 1/4 lengths for owner-breeder-trainer

Carolyn Dodwell. The filly was produced from the

winning Authenticate mare Solarfast.

An 8-year-old son of Bernstein, Crossbow finished

second in the Hunch Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack

and third in the grade III James Marvin Stakes at

Saratoga Race Course while winning four of 11 ca-

reer starts.

Crossbow entered stud at Valor Farm in Pilot

Point, Texas, in 2013 for a $1,500 fee, which has re-

mained unchanged.

Also represented by his first winner Aug. 26 was

Gattopardo, when the 2-year-old filly Unaquoi took

the third at Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races.

The even-money favorite in a $23,000 maiden spe-

cial weight, Unaquoi scored by 2 3/4 lengths for trainer

Ollie Figgins III and owner-breeder Ray M. Pennington

III. Unaquoi, bred in West Virginia, is out of the winning

More Than Ready mare Jumelle Springs.

Unaquoi is the first starter for her sire, an 11-year-

old son of Johannesburg who won or placed in 10 of 12

starts, including a victory in the Miracle Wood Stakes.

He finished second in the Bay Shore Stakes (gr. III).

Gattopardo stands at O’Sullivan Farms near

Charles Town, West Virginia , where his 2016 fee was

DIALED IN'S RECKLING GRADUATES AT SARATOGABy Ron Mitchell

Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt’s Reckling graduated

in his second start, going wire-to-wire to win the

first race on the Travers Day card at Saratoga Race

Course Aug. 27.

Trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, the

2-year-old son of Dialed In was initially pursued

by expensive juvenile purchase Monaco, then was

chased by longshot Kid Perfect through a quarter in

:22.65. Reckling and jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. held

off a challenge from runner-up Mo Town to win by 1

1/4 lengths. Souper Catch completed the trifecta.

Reckling, who came off a second in his July 30 de-

but at Saratoga, finished six furlongs in the $93,000

maiden special weight in 1:10.37.

Monaco, a son of Uncle Mo purchased for $1.3

million earlier this year, wound up sixth in his first

start for Repole Stable and Michael Tabor, Susan

Magnier, and Derrick Smith.

Produced from the Distorted Humor mare Cash

Reserve, Reckling is by the second-leading first-crop

sire (through Aug. 26). Dialed In stands at Darby Dan

Farm near Lexington, where his 2016 fee was $7,500.

Reckling was bred by Dixiana Farm and purchased

by the Heiligbrodts for $70,000 from the Lane’s End

consignment to the 2015 Keeneland January sale. He

was pinhooked into this year’s Ocala Breeders’ Sales

Co’s April 2-year-olds in training sale, where he was

STALLION SEASONS AND DIVERSIFICATION

In the investments field, calamities stemming

from a lack of diversification occur all too

frequently. Any one of a plethora of risks can

lead to the bankruptcy of what looked like a

solid company, and some investors inexplicably

tie their fortunes to one or a small number of

stocks.

Diversification lowers two related risks—the

"concentration

risk" associated

with owning a

small number of

assets, and the

"risk of ruin" that

arises when con-

centrated holdings

have substantial

price volatility.

Is diversification

important when

choosing stallion

seasons? First

consider unproven

stallions. Predicting

which unproven

stallions will do well

is exceedingly difficult. If it were easy, why didn't

season buyers recognize that Tapit and War

Front were worth $200,000-plus right from year

one?

An old saw argues for breeding unproven

mares to proven stallions, and you often hear

the converse—breed proven mares to unproven

stallions. My translation of these adages follows.

If you want to breed a runner or give a young

mare her best chance at becoming a "proven

producer," breed to proven stallions. If you want

to ruin a young mare, breed her to unproven

stallions. There will be exceptions to these rules,

but statistics prove they are just that.

Because of the difficulty in predicting the

success of unproven stallions, it is much more

important (whether you're a market or a breed-

to-race breeder) to diversify when breeding to

unproven stallions. Given that approximate-

ly 85% of unproven stallions do not become

successful, the probability of racing success

and building a strong broodmare band when

breeding to unproven stallions is low. If a breed-

er breeds most of his mares to one or a small

number of unproven stallions, the likely result is

"feast" a small per-

centage of the time

and "famine" a large

percent of the time.

The risk of ruin will

be high in this case,

because breeding all

your mares to one or

two "duds" means it's

unlikely that a good

runner emerges to bail

you out. Alternatively,

breeding to several

different unproven

stallions decreases

chances for a "risk of

ruin" outcome be-

cause some unproven

stallions are likely to end up being among the

15% that become successful.

In contrast, proven stallions are typically

more predictable than stocks, making their con-

centration risk more manageable. Their genes

aren't going to change, and they are not subject

to fraud by CEOs or rogue traders deflating their

values. There are risks—they could get kicked by

a mare or have a down year; but most problems

that proven stallions face are more easily ac-

commodated than recovering from a bankrupt

stock. Moreover, you may be able to arrange a

multiple-season discount deal. BH

Juddmonte's Arrogate—a colt previously untested in graded stakes competition—blew apart the 3-year-old division with the fastest Travers performance in history, setting a new track record for 1 1/4 miles at Saratoga. The win was redemptiton for Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, who last year saw Triple Crown winner American Pharoah defeated in the Travers. Arrogate broke like a shot and set quick frac-tions of :23.23 and :46.84, ran three-quarters in 1:10.85, then opened up by daylight coming off the final turn. Fellow Baffert trainee American Freedom followed him the whole way around, but was no match down the stretch. Clicking through a 1:35.52 mile, the son of Unbridled's Song blazed under the wire in a final time of 1:59.36, with a 13 1/2-length margin of victo-ry.—C.N.

California shipper Drefong extended his win streak to four while capturing his stakes debut. Sent off as the 3-1 favorite, he broke on top from his outside post position and got away with a relatively easy early fractions before drawing off to win by a clear margin. Runner-up Economic Model, who raced within striking range on the inside, angled out and rallied four wide in the stretch, but never got close.—M.L.
