Message from the Rector

Dear Friends in Christ,

Season is rapidly coming to an end which brings a slower pace for our parish life. It was a good sea-

son with numerous highlights, most recently being the visits from Fr. John Price, author of Revealing

Heaven, and Dr. Eben Alexander, author of The Proof of Heaven. Both events were well received. Holy

Week and Easter were especially powerful this year. We continue to be blessed by our notable music

and liturgical ministry. I foresee the addition of the egg toss to the egg hunt to become a new Easter

tradition!

This past month we initiated a low-key capital campaign, Restoration 60, to raise the necessary funds

for an extensive restoration of the church and upgrades for the parish hall facility. The Wardens, Ves-

try and I are pleased to share with you that as of April 29, approximately $750,000 has been commit-

ted by parishioners and caring Port Royal neighbors. We are confident we have the ability to reach

our goal of $1,000,000 by having the full participation of the parish family. Gift commitments of all

sizes are welcomed and necessary, and can be given over a three year period. We earnestly ask

parishioners who have yet to offer their gift to do so as soon as possible in order for the finance com-

mission and Vestry to properly plan and fund the various projects.

The work in the church begins the middle of the month; however, vacating the church will not be nec-

essary until the first of July. We may have a bit of dust and inconvenience prior to vacating, but we

anticipate it to be minimal. The work in the Parish Hall facility will follow and not require us to

vacate the facility, but rather shuffle our use of the various rooms. This work will most likely com-

mence later in the summer.

Listed on the following page are the names of parishioners who have already committed to Restora-

tion 60: We thank them for their love and commitment to our parish’s life and ministry!

Faithfully, Michael Basden Rector

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness;

Come into his presence with singing. Psalm 100

A nd it is a joyful noise! Each Sunday when we meet in the atrium, we sing, we pray, we talk, we laugh, we listen and sometimes we make a lot of noise. And because the Holy Spirit is present, we are worshipping Our

LORD with gladness. One characteristic of the religious experience we share with children is the quality of celebra-tion. At times prayer will take the form of celebrations in the true and real sense of the word; one that is extempora-neous in nature or one that closely follows the Church’s Liturgy.

One celebration the children enjoy is the procession to the prayer table at the beginning of each season. It is less structured and more spontaneous. For example, during the preparations on the first Sunday in Advent, the chil-dren excitedly plan what they want to carry to the Prayer Table. While one child might choose the blue cloth, the others want to carry the blue candles for the Advent Wreath, and the matches! And the snuffer! A child carrying the prophet statue gladly leads the procession while others carry the Bible, a prayer card and definitely flowers. Again at Christmas they delight in processing with the three wise men with a star leading the way, and of course, the cloth changes to white. The children choose a prayer card and maybe a gift or two, and while on their way to the Prayer Table, they come into His presence with singing. Ah, Lent! As a child, wonder for a moment, what might you carry to the prayer table?!

There are also several celebrations that follow the Church’s Liturgy. During these we are as faithful as possi-ble to the liturgical structure, in such a way that these celebrations are not only an occasion for the children to pray, but also an occasion for their initiation into the living participation in the Liturgy. The Easter Liturgy is especially rich; we select the Liturgy of Light for the younger children. It closely follows the Easter Vigil Service where the Paschal candle is lit outside and leads the children into a dark room where they too light a candle and share the Light of the risen Christ. The celebration of Light continues with their atrium work on Baptism and also with Pente-

cost, the celebration of the feast of the Holy Spirit. As we come to the end of our for-mation year, the children already have a profound familiarity with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit’s work appears obvious to them, and they know how to recognize it spontaneously in the most important moments. One of our aims is to lead the children to scripture, so after the procession with the Paschal candle, a red cloth, and 7 red candles, we narrate the historical event, reading the text from the second chap-ter of Acts. We also name the gifts of the Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel, strength, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord, as we light each of the seven candles. The children then ponder what gift they would like to receive, and they

light their own candle from one of the seven named gifts. Much joy is shared as they celebrate the Holy Spirit alive in their life and the light of the risen Christ shining within them. When celebrations occur in the atrium they are the child’s true expression of their community. Whether they are gathered at the Prayer Table singing or sitting with a work in silence pondering its meaning, they are lifting their hearts in response to the love of their Good Shepherd.

Holy Spirit come, Make my eyes to see. Make my ears to hear; Make my mouth to speak Make my heart to sing and My hands to reach out and Touch the world with your love. (atrium song) Linda Gemmer, Director

Naples Community Hospital

Blood Mobile

Sunday, May 12th, all morning

T rinity invites the Naples Community Blood Mobile to our site three times a year and the

next visit is May 12th. What a perfect way to hon-or your mother by donating a pint of your precious blood that morning. Most people are able to donate and it only takes about thirty minutes of your time—and, it is painless. The hospital supplies are down as many of our winter visitors donate and they have left us for the sum-mer. Please sign the roster in the parish hall and donate the true gift of life!

Pentecost Picnic May 19th

O n Pentecost Sunday, May 19th, following the 10:00 liturgy, all Young Families will meet at

Lowdermilk Park for a Pentecost Picnic. Pack a picnic for your family or order one from Wynn’s Market. (see order form in the Parish Hall) The church will provide beverages and spirit-blowing activities such as kite flying, bubble blow-ing and wave jumping. We have the gazebo at the north end of the park rented until 1:00, so come and join the fun.

Service Times Change Yes, it is summer and we are smaller in number! On May 12th we revert to our summer schedule for Sunday services: 8:00 a.m. The Holy Eucharist, Rite I

10:00 a.m. The Holy Eucharist, Rite II Watch for an announcement about our first summer brunches that we have once a month starting in June!

K nowing and directing our spiritual gifts, passions, style and interests are a guide

to finding our purpose in life. God’s thumb-print is on each of us from the time we are born. In three two-hour sessions, you will use assessments to explore different areas of your life that make up who you are. If you want to find your place in ministry and ser-vice, this process will be helpful for you. If you have questions or would like to partici-pate in the class, contact Mother Alice (262-6581 ext. 206 or [email protected] by May 6th to ensure having your materials in time for class. Cost for materials is $15.00.

Men of Trinity Monday, May 13th, 8 a.m. First Watch Restaurant

M en of Trinity continue to meet through-out the summer at 8 a.m. the second

Monday of each month. The location has changed to the First Watch Restaurant at the intersection of Gulf Shore Blvd. North and Banyan Blvd. Another difference is that this is a smaller group and there is no formal presentation; just good fellowship, a yummy breakfast, and a chance to get to know your fellow year-rounders. No need to sign up, just show up!

CONFIRMATION, RECEPTION, & REAFFIRMATION by the Rt. Rev. Dabney Smith, Bishop of the Diocese of Southwest Florida, April 28, 2013 Left to right: Fr. Michael, Bud Weaver, Carole Weaver, Jana Kirk, Cindy Stegemann, Jim Kirk, Bishop Smith, Ruth Leigh, Sharon Julian, John Robb, Rick Goldie, Rev. Ann Stevenson (absent, Nikki Biernat)

The Book of Common Prayer states the following about the Sacrament of Confirmation:

“In the course of their Christian development, those baptized at an early age are expected, when they are ready and have been duly prepared, to make a mature public affirmation of their faith and commitment to the responsibilities of their Baptism and to receive the laying on of hands by the bishop (412).”

Confirmation is a sacrament that many adults experi-ence at Trinity-by-the-Cove as they move from being a visitor on Sunday into a deeper Christian life and com-mitment. Through the last several months six parish-ioners have attended Trinity’s Focus on Faith Group facilitated by Mother Ann, which met on Sundays after the 11:15 service during the season. In that group, candidates for confirmation learned about many facets of the Episcopal Church and Christian life and then were confirmed this past Sunday by Bishop Smith. In addition to those who were confirmed, three parishion-ers also attended the Focus on Faith Group and were received into the Episcopal church by Bishop Dabney. Reception is for people who were baptized within another Christian tradition, like the Roman

Catholic Church or Methodist Church, and who wish to affiliate with the Episcopal Church. Finally, two parishioners formally reaffirmed their baptismal vows, which is a way to recommit to Christian faith and life.

Community Grant Commission

T he eleven members of the Community Grant Commission are busy making on-site visits to

the 14 agencies who have applied for the 2013 grant cycle. We will present our findings and recommen-dations to the Vestry at their May meeting.

One more of the agencies that we funded in 2012 is Camp Angels. They are a small agency started in 2002 that offer partial scholarships for camp fees for children with type I Diabetes. The family income must be less than $35,000 for a fami-ly of four. Fortunately, there are several different camps for these children around Florida. The camps help the children bond with other diabetic children and learn they are not alone with their ill-ness. There are doctors and nurses present who help them learn more about their disease, their blood testing, counting carbohydrates, their medi-cines, need for exercise and the like. They keep journals on what they do and learn. It is inspiring to read about the experience and comments of these campers.

Since we are using a three year rotation, the grant was used to help five children last year and five more this year. Joyce Fletcher, Chair

WOMEN OF TRINITY

T he Women of Trinity have finished another successful season of fund-raising and out-

reach. We are proud to report that we have raised $118,000 and have donated it all to various out-reach programs, ranging from the Tumaini Fund to Parkside Elementary in Naples, and a myriad of worthy projects in between. (continued, next page)

We are very proud of this remarkable achieve-ment, and I would like to thank all the Board members, volunteers and patrons of the Church Mouse for your hard work and dedication in effecting this successful ministry. Additionally, our Christmas Market could not have been as profitable without the support of the entire parish and our vendors in their enthu-siasm and generosity in supporting this worth-while project. Parkside Elementary School Pen Pal Program

T he Naples Council of World Affairs recent-ly awarded a $5,000 grant to Tumaini Fund

USA to build two elementary school classrooms in a village where the closest school is more than 12 miles away. We have collaborated with Parkside Elementary School to create a pen pal program with these students in Tanzania. In order to facilitate this program, Dr. Susan Wilson visited Parkside to give a lesson on basic Swahili vocabulary, and Doug Burke visited with students to explain the difference in life-styles between Africa and the United States. The presentation included a video showing life in Africa and the challenges facing the villagers. Over the next year, students will create draw-ings and notes, including both English and Swahili words, to send to their peers in Tanzania, and the students there will recipro-cate. RELAY FOR LIFE NAPLES

2013

Let’s Knock Out Cancer

T his year’s Relay for Life was a great success!

Thanks to the effort of so many parishioners, Team Trinity raised more than $18,000.00 for the American Cancer Society in their fight against can-cer. We especially thank the Women of Trinity for their contribution of $10,000.00 which was more than half of the amount raised. From the initial fund raising effort by our Trinity valet parking team on Palm Sunday to the final Relay Saturday morning breakfast feast, more than 130 parishioners were involved with this event. Trinitarians partici-pated with their financial donations, their dona-tions of food for the Friday dinner and Saturday morning breakfast and their donations of time to set-up, decorate and serve food. The Trinity hamburger/chicken cookout and pot luck dinner as well as the bacon, sausage, omelet, pancake breakfast is famous throughout the “Relay” crowd. More than 225 meals were served at the Friday night dinner and 150 were served at the Saturday morning breakfast. Besides the enjoy-able camaraderie of the event, it is heartwarming to see so many cancer survivors and to know that this fundraising effort is contributing to the medical advances that are being made through cancer research. Thank you again for all your support of Team Trin-ity for this year’s Relay for Life. Mike Moore & Tom Melvin Co-Chairs

Parkside Elementary School

T eaching is a challenge, especially at an elemen-tary school where 87 percent of the children

come from non-English speaking homes and 97 per-cent are classified as economically needy. That is the reality of Parkside Elementary School! The Harry Chapin mobile food bank regularly visits, and par-ents and children quietly line up after school to receive, grateful for the assistance. A place where a secondhand clothing drive is a welcome occur-rence as mothers and fathers sort through the tables for the proper sizes and children eagerly grab the sparkly pink Mary Janes or the pair of in-line skates that are not normal household items. But there are some very caring people who welcome the challenge offered by Parkside, the mission.

One is a first year teacher who grew up in Wis-consin, but moved with her family to Naples in high school. She graduated from Gulf Coast High School and attended the University of Florida in Gaines-ville. There, she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s degree in Special Education. She was selected by Parkside because her love for educating, and enthusiasm were evident. She is already making a difference in the lives of her students. Her classroom is fun to visit, and it is clear that the students love the learn-ing that is taking place. Recently this teacher accepted a new challenge: to be part of a grant with Tumaini USA, to have her students begin communicating with primary stu-dents in Tanzania. What a blessing for these chil-dren to learn another culture and to share their own. Rather than only being recipients, they are givers; they too have something to offer - their expe-riences, their culture, themselves. (The Tumaini Project is a project that Trinity-by-the-Cove also supports.).

This young teacher has a long range goal of moving up in the world of public education, and she says maybe someday she will be the Secretary of Education for Florida or even the United States. She is thrilled to be a part of the Parkside team, committed to grow her teaching craft and help our students —living the Parkside motto -Empowering students for lifelong success!

And, we at Trinity-by-the-Cove are commit-ted to doing our part, letting this teacher, and all teachers at Parkside, know that they are appreciat-ed for their hard work and caring.

Once a month during the school year we have sponsored some sort of “teacher apprecia-tion” event at the school for entire staff of the school. Our goal has been to let the teachers, office staff, maintenance personnel etc. know how much their dedication to the school and the children is appreciated. We want to encourage these teachers so they will want to continue to teach at Parkside and develop relationships with the students and parents. All to help the children achieve their goal of a good solid education.

Also, perhaps you have noticed the Parkside

Birthday sign up in the Parish Hall. This is anoth-er very simple and easy way to show our apprecia-tion to the teachers and staff: simply select a name that is available, purchase a birthday card and a $25 gift card (Target, WalMart, Applebys, Publix, Costco). Sign the card, put the gift card in it and write your recipient’s name on the outside of the envelope and leave it in the box next to the sign up. Just another small way to thank them for their dedication and hard work in an often challenging school environment. This one project has been well received as evidenced by the numerous thank you notes received by the office or these small tokens of appreciation given by Trinitarians. There are still plenty of birthdays to select and we encourage you to do so.

If you have any questions about Parkside and our growing ministry to them, please contact me, Cookie Coleman, [email protected]. Thank you.

W e are delighted to announced that the Archan-gel Fund for Collier County Charities will be

donating $150,000 for the Grants Commission to dis-perse to agencies here in Collier County that focus on Child Protection, Advocacy and Education. $125,000 are from the money raised by the Fine Art of Living events and $25,000 is coming from funds raised by the Women of Trinity. TUMAINI FUND, USA

T hanks to our donors and board of directors, we’ve had a very successful year. Some recent

changes have taken place on the board of directors. Founding board member, Doug Burke, will be step-ping down as President of Tumaini Fund USA. However, we feel fortunate that he will serve ex-officio for one more year. The good news is that Rick Swope has agreed to lead Tumaini Fund USA as our new president. Both Rick and his wife, Jane Lamberson, have been avid sup-porters since the inception. He is President of Urish Popeck & Company of Florida, LLC and Global Wealth Consultants, LLC, companies that have prov-en to be generous supporters of our cause. Addition-ally, after four years of devoted service, Lis Wilson is stepping down from Tumaini Fund USA’s Board of Directors. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Lis for her passionate and hard work in changing so many lives. Lis will continue to remain an active volunteer committed to important efforts such as our meaning-ful “Sewing for Hope” program. We’re pleased to announce that two more Trinitarians, Sherrie Meek and Sally Melvin, have been elected to the Board of Directors. Grace Gokturk

Around the Parish A Day of and for Men Fellowship & Reflection

L ast month an article appeared in the Trini-tarian referencing the possibility of a day

retreat or other opportunity for the men of the parish to foster growth in fellowship and serious reflection about God and growth as Christian men. Particular interest has been expressed in accommodating working men who might not be able to break free from obligations in the middle of the work day.

Fr. Edward invites interested men to read Seven Men and the Secret of their Greatness by Eric Met-axes. Perhaps the different lives portrayed in this book can offer a foundation for a half-day of reflection together in the fall. If you have any questions of comments, please email Fr. Edward [email protected] In the meantime, read what amazon.com has to say about the book.

In Seven Men, New York Times best-selling author Eric Metaxas presents seven exquisitely crafted short portraits of widely known—but not well understood—Christian men, each of whom uniquely showcases a commitment to live by certain virtues in the truth of the gospel.

Thanks for the Help!

An annual tradition at Trinity-by-the-Cove for quite some time has been the Easter Egg Hunt. This year we enhanced Easter Day fun with an egg race and egg toss! Thanks to Ted Davis who led the charge with egg race and toss. Thanks also to Susan LaPointe and Marilyn Tiburski who baked the lamb cakes given as prizes for the finders of the alleluia eggs!

Fourth Annual Fishing Tournament

June 8, 2013

The phrase Hook Line & Sinker was first used in the 1800s to indi-cate a person’s whole-hearted acceptance of an idea. Last year, a first time participant in the Fishing Tournament de-clared, “Had I known it was this much fun, I would have signed up for the two previous fishing tournaments.” And, that’s called falling in love with fishing and our Fishing Tournament Hook, Line & Sinker! Are you ready to fall in love with fishing and the fel-

lowship found in our fishing tournament?

About the Fishing Tournament

The Fishing Tournament begins with coffee and doughnuts on Saturday morning June 8th. An-glers then set off either in their own boats or on the boats offered through Pure Naples (space is limited, but so far we have been able to accommodate almost everyone!). Everyone enjoys a half day of fishing and then returns to the dock and parish hall for a BBQ lunch ($10 per person, children eat free) and awards. Many people who do not want to wish (or get sea sick) join us for the lunch to share in the fun and joy!

What the Fishing Tournament Does

The Fishing Tournament draws attention to and uses the water front with which we are blessed at Trinity-by-the-Cove. But, more than that: families gather together and the generations at Trinity-by-the

-Cove gather together for fun together—good fun to-gether. And, we have seen that in this fun, visitors and friends see the amazing Christian fellowship offered in our church, new friendships are kindled and the joy and wonder of creation is made present in our lives.

How to Join-in the Fun!

No fishing experience is necessary to partici-pate and all, regardless of whether they are fishing, are invited and encouraged to attend the BBQ lunch at noon. Save the date of June 8th, 2013 and then look for sign-ups in the parish hall:

Sign up to have a guided fishing trip (limited

space). Sign up to bring your own boat and fishing

team Sign up to come for a BBQ lunch and welcome

the anglers back to dry land! Questions: Email or call Fr. Edward

Fishing Tournament Raffle We are committed to making the Fishing Tour-nament a fun and very affordable event. Much like the Music at Trinity is offered at no charge, the guided fishing spots in the Tournament are offered at no charge. To underwrite the event, however, we are pleased to offer the Fishing Tournament Raffle. On Sundays, or by contacting Katie in the parish office, you can purchase raffle tickets for a half-day or day of fishing. $10 each or 3 for $20. You can pick to be en-tered in an inshore/backwater trip with Capt. Jim Wheeler or a whole day offshore adventure on the Capt. Jack with John Melton. Buy many chance!

Standing Notices The Sacrament of Holy Baptism is celebrated at the Easter Vigil, the Day of Pentecost, All Saints’ Day or the Sunday after All Saints’ Day, and on the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord (the First Sunday after the Epiphany). Baptisms are reserved for these occasions or when the Bishop is present.

The Sacrament of Holy Matrimony is offered to members of the parish, in good standing, and members of their immediate family. Lent is not a suitable season.

It is expected for the parish office to be informed when a member of the parish is hospitalized in order to secure the ministrations of the church.

The Sacrament of Holy Unction is administered at the Healing Service on the second Thursday of each month at 12:00 p.m.
