When Christ was lifted from the earth, his arms stretched out above through every culture, every birth, to draw an answering love. Still east and west his love extends and always, near or far, He calls and claims us as his friends and loves us as we are. Where generation, class, or race divide us to our shame, He sees not labels but a face, a person, and a name. Thus freely loved, thou fully known, may I in Christ be free to welcome and accept his own as Christ accepted me. Brian A. Wren b 1936 The Hymnal 1982

Rector’s Message

To draw an answering love

It is perhaps one of the best things we can say to someone—I love you. “Hearing a partner say "I love you" for the first time is regarded as one of the highlights of a romantic relationship. However, people are often uncertain about when to declare their love, and whether to be the first to do so or to wait until the other has given an indication that they feel the same way. Is there a best time to reveal your heart? Does the timing make any difference, or all the difference?” Ben-Zeev, Aaron. In the Name of Love. Psychology today.

There seems to be so much wrapped up in those three little words—insecurity, fear, self-preservation and self-esteem. “ Revealing our loving heart to a partner is immeasurably valuable for communication and personal flourishing. However, such self-disclosure makes you more vulnerable and may put your partner in an uncomfortable situation, especially if his or her attitude is different from yours. Consider, for example, this common (and conflicting) advice about when to tell your partner "I love you":

Go on at least five dates.

Say it only after two months.

Don't wait too long.

Wait until you're absolutely bursting.

Do not do it before, after, or during intimacy.

Don't say it when you're very emotional and cannot think rationally.

Don't say it when you want to reward your partner for something. Never say it first, and don't echo it back until you've spent some extended time together.” Ibid.

Amazing that three little words are so full. We know that in our personal relationships—romantic and familial—that these words are filled with our imperfections and vulnerabilities. What about our relationship with God?

God has ever said, “I love you.” In the beginning of creation, God breathed life into humankind and declared blessing and goodness. God continued His loving care through slavery in Egypt and freedom through the Red Sea into the wilderness, past the River Jordon and into the Promised Land. We know this love through Jesus—a new command Jesus gave us, “As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” Jesus loved first to draw us into an answering love. Our best love—our best love— answers Jesus and calls us to love one another with depth and height and breadth!

This is the second year that I have tried to pull together the ways we love our neighbors around us. You

will read about how the “bucket’s” here at Trinity-by-the-Cove work together to fuel grants, and the grants

themselves. All of it—our answering love as a community, fueled by your individual sacrifices and loving

participation in our outreach efforts. And, not just money, but answering love given through all of those volunteer

hours given so freely to Service Projects at Habitat, Youth Haven, St. Matthew’s House and beyond! Thank you for

your answering love!

P.S. Even as we celebrate our love this past season to our community, nation and world, I’m always mindful of a Katrina story

and the church where I grew up. The church was extremely generous to the community, giving away hundreds of thousands of

dollars, but could not help a parishioner who couldn’t make their mortgage payment. Your generosity and our care is poured

out into our own parish through the clergy discretionary fund, our parish counselor and priestly pastoral care, and the Good

Samaritan Fund—parishioners have received help with housing, medical bills, school costs, mental health and parishioners

have received care through hospital visitations, home visits, spiritual direction, and mental health counseling.

T he Community Grant Commission has been work-ing diligently since December to reach out to this

year’s non-profit agency cycle of Child Protection, Ad-vocacy and Education. Having 13 committee members who are curious, dedicated and well-informed of the value and work of the non-profits in Collier County was such a benefit this year. However, none of this would be possible without the extraordinary financial help that we have received from The Women of Trinity, The Fine Art of Living (now the Art of Giving), and new this year, The Olde Naples Arts and Entertainment. We would like to thank every member of the parish who contribut-ed their time, talent and treasure to these groups.

Chair Diana Harrison shares “I know I speak for the Com-mission when I say that we are so impressed with the caliber of the professionals who care so deeply about the disadvantaged here in Collier County. So many of these non-profits do so much with so little. They not only pro-vide programs, they give hope, and care and a sense of dignity that is absent in so many families.”

The Grants Commission recommended to the Vestry funding a total of $159,802 to sixteen agencies and the Vestry was pleased to so approve. Monies have been distributed to the following agencies and each is re-quired to report back to Trinity by the end of the year with an update on the use of the funds granted. Thank you to the Grants Commission members for their dedi-cation and determination to the spirit of Outreach to which Trinity-by-the-Cove and its parishioners has always aspired.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Pentecost, what a celebration of the Feast of the Holy Spirit. At the picnic, the Spirit was blowing through the GIGANTIC bubbles reminding us that He is big enough to be everywhere all of the time and yet small enough to be personal and inside each of us always. The splashing of water was a re-newal of Baptism in a sense. As one child proclaimed in the atrium that morning, “The Holy Spirit comes in us when we are baptized because the priest calls the Spirit into the water and pours Him on our heads.” In the atrium, we also lit 7 red candles, representing the 7 gifts of the Spirit: wis-dom, understanding, counsel, knowledge, fortitude strength, piety, and fear of the Lord (wonder). Luckily the tongues of fire did not dance on their heads as we prayed for the Holy Spirit to stir in us these gifts!

The Spirit is blowing through Trinity-by-the-Cove, and the religious formation of our children is His delight. We feel, see, and hear it in the hearts of those who work with our children:

Maria says, “ With the help of the Holy Spirit, my work at the nursery has been enlightening, I am thankful for the training of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd."

For Martha, "Nursery time has emphasized slowing to the moment, which results in a calmness to me and the children. The Holy Spirit is totally in charge...thank goodness!!"

"Through being trained in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd this year" Father Daniel says, “I now see how powerfully God is at work in the hearts of the little children that inhabit our Atria week after week. My task as a Catechist is not to establish a relationship between these children and God; that relationship is already present, through the waters of Baptism and by the power of the Holy Spirit. Instead, my task is to foster the love that has been poured into their hearts, and give voice to our delight in the Good Shepherd of the sheep, Jesus Christ.”

Kristin, who has also been in the training and has assisted in the True Vine atrium this Spring says, “I have been so inspired and encouraged by the children of our church and their work in the atrium. The simplicity of their faith and purity of their relationships with God is so beautiful and has been a constant reminder to me of the love of the Good Shepherd who is constantly leading and caring for his sheep.”

“In the Living Bread atrium the Holy Spirit is alive each Sunday”, says Diane. “But there was one day in particular that we all could feel it moving. This winter, on a particularly beautiful Sunday, the 4th and 5th graders experienced walking the labyrinth. The children were prepared for contemplation, as we discussed what a labyrinth is prior to walking over to the church: that there is one path in and one path out, that it is meant to bring clarity, not confusion, and that it is a form of contemplative prayer. As we slowly moved through the labyrinth’s turns, we read Psalm 23. The sense of peace and quiet that came over each of us was truly a gift of the Spirit. Over the coming summer and throughout the next year, I hope to recapture that gift as we plant the seeds of faith, water them, and watch them grow in each child in the atrium.”

Kaydee, who has assisted in all three levels with the children says, “God’s word flows freely from the minds and mouths of children in Trinity’s three atriums. Equally as busy are their hands as they create, embrace, and discover God through their many works. It is truly a blessing to be part of this wonderful ministry and to have the opportunity to witness the spiritual growth of these young people. We need atriums for 'big peo-ple'.”

I wonder where the Spirit is blowing in your life? Could it be with the children? We welcome you to this Holy Ground. Linda Gemmer, Lead Catechist

A bove the Cenacle Youth joined forces with Lambs of God youth group from Fort Myers for a fun day of kayaking, kiddie pool kickball, and fellowship.

We plan to do several more events like this with neighboring youth groups over the next year! This was a great way for the youth to meet other young Episcopali-ans in the area.

The youth room is undergoing big changes! Over the summer, the youth will be painting the new room, now called The Cenacle. Painting dates in June and July are TBA. Youth leader, Hannah Rinaldi shares “We haven't bought the paint yet, so I don't have painting dates. I'm waiting for confirmation on the color (any day now). Once we have it, we'll pick a few dates in June and July for the kids to come paint after church.”

Summer Soirées S tarting in June and continuing through September

each month between 40-50 parishioners will have an opportunity to gather together at a local restaurant for a casual and delicious meal and fellowship. In June Su and Jean Szen will host at the Normandy Café; in July David and Debbie Finch will host and their loca-tion is still being selected. Then in August John Cowan and Audrey Bird have selected Bayside; and in Septem-ber Donald Stitt will be the host at a surprise location. The restaurants pull out the stops for us and we get to visit and know each other on a social level. Sign up as soon as the rosters appear (noted in your bulletins) as they fill up quickly.

Parish Family Summer Brunches

W e all know how quiet it is in Naples during the summer months but we who stay here year

round also know how much fun we have! Parish Fami-ly Summer Brunches are one of the ways we stay con-nected during the slow summer months. Bring your favorite breakfast egg dish, or yummy crisp bacon, or how about sticky buns freshly made to share. Our sen-ior warden, Jim Jessee, usually bring in something no one else can match but at least he brings in plenty for all! The brunches will be held on June 19th, July 24th, August 14th and will finish with a Rally day picnic on September 11th.

College Student Meetups

Summer is nearly here, which means that col-lege students are now on summer break. Believe it or not, we have quite a lot of young parishioners who are away at college and are now returning home for the summer. Fr. Daniel is hoping to organize a few college student meetups throughout the summer—social occa-sions that give students the chance to reconnect and get to know each other. Do you have a college student (or recent grad) at home with you this summer who would be interested in these meetups? Or are you, dear reader, a college student that would like to come to them? Send an email to Fr. Daniel ([email protected]), and let him know.

Theology of Hymns—Videos! We recently concluded a very successful Adult Forum se-ries on the “Theology of Hymns,” led by Ann Stevenson and Tad Meyer during this past season. In addition to Ann and Tad’s insights into our hymn tradition, we made week-ly videos (12 in total) featuring our Director of Music, John Fenstermaker, who offered his own reflections and demon-strated various hymns at each of our church’s instruments: church organ, antique organ, both pianos—and even the calliope. Many of us know that Dr. Fenstermaker has both a keen wit and an excellent sense of humor, which comes through well in these videos.

All of the videos from the “Theology of Hymns” series are now published and available on our Trinity-by-the-Cove YouTube website (yes, we have one!). To access the site, open an internet browser and enter this link: www.bit.ly/TrinityCoveVideos This will take you to our YouTube channel, where you can

select the video you wish to view. Happy watching (and

feel free to share the link!)

Calling All Bookworms!

Have you always wanted to read the short stories of Flan-nery O’Connor, but just haven’t gotten around to it? Or maybe a novel by Dostoevsky or Tolstoy, but were intimi-dated by the page count? Or that new-ish book by Hilary Mantel (Wolf Hall) about the drama surrounding Henry VIII, but you didn’t think there’d be anyone else that want-ed to talk about it?

Well, you’re in luck! Fr. Daniel is keen to start up a group of “Trinity bookworms” who love to read great books and would enjoy the chance to talk about them. The group would meet once a month, and is open to anyone who is interested. Most of the books selected would be works of

fiction (novels), and will intersect in some Faith & Beer in the

Summer
