So Much More than Just Play……The adult personality is built on the child’s play. Among the social skills learned are the ability to share, cooperate, negotiate compromise, make and revise rules, and to take the perspectives of others. Play provides opportunities for children to meet and solve problems…It helps children express their thoughts and feelings and to deal with stress; to cope with fears they can’t yet understand or articulate. Throughplay, children acquire literacy, mathematical, and creative skills. Make believe play, in particular, has been linked to self-regulation skills, which in turn have been linked to greater academic success than IQ has. Self-regulation skills also help children with self-control and with managing stress while learning.

Resources

Early Childhood Family Education(ECFE) is a program for all Minnesota families with children between the ages of birth to kindergarten. The program is offered through Minnesota public school districts.

ECFE offers parents hands-on learning experiences that will nourish a lifetime of teachable moments.

All ECFE classes are taught by licensed teachers and parent educators to provide the quality education for which parents are looking.

Together, parents and children, newborn to kindergarten age, participate in activities and experiences that foster children’s social, emotional, cognitive, physical, and language skills.

A typical ECFE Class includes:

Together TimeParent and child together enjoy a classroom filled with developmentally appropriate learning activities.Parents’ TimeParents separate from their children and join together for a discussion group facilitated by a Parent Educator.Children’s TimeWhile parents are in discussion, children participate in activities facilitated by an Early Childhood Teacher.

ECFE Preschool Screening

The Launching PadPreschool Ages 3 to 5 yearsThe Launching Pad Preschool provides an outstanding and unique public preschool experience for your child. We embrace a Reggio Emilia-inspired philosophy and Creative Curriculum.

The Reggio-inspired approach encourages exploration, discovery and critical thinking. Our Creative Curriculum is research based, and aligned with the Minnesota Early Childhood Indicators of Progress (ECIPs).

Our program is founded on the belief that all children have great potential, are curious, and are interested in constructing their learning. Learning activities are exciting, creative, and developmentally appropriate. We focus on some of these key elements that encourage children’s growth and learning:

Project-based learning: Stresses individual and small group investigation of topics that are of interest to the children. Teachers integrate skills acquisition within the project work.

Inquiry-based learning: Emphasizes thinking and problem solving, and is a natural progression for students as they move into kindergarten and the primary grades.

Authentic Art: Helps children find expression through authentic art experiences and have the opportunity to explore materials and processes.

4-star Parent Aware rated program. This reflects our commitment to high quality programming using

research-based best practices, while preparing children for success in kindergarten and beyond.

Launching Pad Preschool offers:Full Day Programs: 2 or 3 days per week Half Day Programs: 2, 3 or 5 days per week

ProceduresChildren are our future. We value humanity, the strength of families and celebrate differences and we are committed to promoting the value of families in our society. To accomplish our goals in the fairest way possible, we must adhere to the following procedures:

Missed Classes Call the ECFE office at 763-477-7500 when you are unable to attend class.

Behavior Staff will immediately respond to children engaged in unsafe play whether or not a parent is present. Staff will assist parents with appropriate guidance when necessary.

Health Procedures We have a designated area to put all toys that come into contact with a child’s mouth; these are sterilized

daily. A child who has a fever of 100 degrees or more, or has vomited within the past 24 hours should not attend classes. Children should be kept home if they exhibit a sore throat, diarrhea, thick mucous from the nose, undiagnosed rash, inflamed or mattery eyes, infected sores, or persistent itching of body or scalp. If a child comes to school with these conditions, we will request the parent and child to leave and return when symptoms have disappeared.

When school has a late start, morning ECFE classes will be cancelled. The Benefits Of Baking For Other PeopleBaking is a productive form of self-expression and communication.

“Baking has the benefit of allowing people creative expression,” associate professor of psychological and brain sciences at Boston University, Donna Pincus, told HuffPost. “There’s a lot of literature for connection between creative expression and overall wellbeing. Whether it’s painting or it’s making music [or baking], there is a stress relief that people get from having some kind of an outlet and a way to express themselves.”

When baking for other people, baking can also be a helpful way to communicate one’s feelings. Susan Whitbourne, professor of psychological and brain sciences at the University of Massachusetts, points to the cultural norm of bringing food to someone when a loved one has passed. Sometimes there are no words, and only food can communicate what you’re trying to say. She told HuffPost, “It can be helpful for people who have difficulty expressing their feelings in words to show thanks, appreciation or sympathy with baked goods.”
