Welcome to the Early Learning opportunities foryour family. Programs include:

• Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE)• Early Childhood Screening• Inver Grove Heights Community Preschool• South St. Paul Community Preschool• School Readiness

You are your child’s first, most significant teacher! Check out our programs to support you.

The ECFE programis brought to you

by the school districts of Inver Grove Heights

and South St. Paul.

What are ECFE classes like?

Separating Classes include:Parent-Child Time … begin withactivities and playtime together appropriate to the age of the child.

Parent Discussion … meet withother parents and a licensed parent educator to share, learn andgain support on parenting, childdevelopment, discipline and current issues.

Children … participate independently and learn throughguided play; individual, small andlarge group, including snacktime, stories and songs to promotegrowth in all areas!

Non-Separating Classes:Parents and children play, exploreand learn together. ECFE roomsare designed with learning centersso that children learn through interaction with their environmentand you.

Proud of our staff ... All ECFE teachers have as a minimum a four-year college degree and have fulfilled the Minnesota teaching licensing requirements in Parent Educationand/or Early Childhood Education.Early Childhood Educators are all experienced, nuturing teachers.

ECFE is . . .• for all families in the Inver Grove

Heights and South St. Paul School Districts with children from birth up to kindergarten.

• a fun, informal place to meet, learn and play with other children and parents.

• creative play and learning activities for all families.

• here to provide the best possible startfor children and for you.

Program GoalThe mission of ECFE is to strengthenfamilies through education and support for all parents; to provide the best possible environment for the healthy growth and development of their childrenthrough research-basedinstructional/learning strategies.

Parents are their children’s first and most important teacher and ECFE staffare here to support you. All familiesare welcome and invited to attend!

Why begin at birth?Brain research confirms that the first three years are critical in a child’s development, especially in the area oflanguage, social and thinking skills. Research shows that when parents areinvolved in children’s education the benefits include:

• Higher test scores and grades• Higher post-secondary enrollment• Fewer behavioral concerns• Fewer placements in special

education

“I Can” Statements-Curriculum

Our early learning programs use a variety of resources to develop and implement curriculum. In addition, staffhave developed “I Can” statements forchildren from birth to kindergarten thatare designed to align with state standards and school district benchmarks to provide all children withschool readiness skills.

The “I Can” statements have been adapted from the MN Department of Education’s Early Learning Standards forthe following age groups:

birth to 18 months 18 to 36 months three-year-olds and four-year-olds.

Staff are looking forward to sharing “I Can” information with you this year.

“ECFE is an amazing program. So gladthat we have such a strong ECFE program in our community! One of thebest decisions I made as a parent was to participate in ECFE.”

Parent Aware ratings are given through the MN Departmentof Education and are provided as a tool designed to helpfamilies access high quality early education programs. Weare proud to share that our program is FOUR STAR rated!

Community Preschool at age three is a time to get accustomed tobeing in a school setting, learning to share and take direction fromadults other than parents and grandparents. It is learning to separate from mom and dad and understand the routine of aclassroom.

Three-year-olds have short attention spans so one of our goals isto engage the children to extend that attention and cultivate interest in different learning centers. Children will begin to learnabout letters in their names, counting, colors, shapes, and playinggames! Threes are kept moving, singing and doing in a veryhands-on environment. You will be amazed at the things yourchild will share with you about what s/he has learned!

Preschool at age four is similar but the focus is on readiness skill building as well as problem-solving for Kindergarten. Consistent routines in the classroom help in both age groups andsmall group work is done with the fours to work on individualneeds. The progress report for both threes and fours spells outexpectations we have for each age group. These are aligned withthe Kindergarten benchmarks and skills.

Our teachers strive to promote children’s love of learning and curiosity through an intentionally planned, “hands-on” learning environment, designed to foster the development of the wholechild. Young children learn best through active involvement, inorder to learn about themselves, other people and the worldaround them. Children are guided to question, solve problemsand express themselves. Teachers respect and understand theuniqueness of each child.

With recent staff development training, preschool staff are energized in sharpening early literacy skills with alphabet andbook knowledge, vocabulary, rhyming and alliteration. This willalso be cultivated with technology and active learning to stimulatepreschoolers in the enjoyment of their achievements!
