FarewellDear Early Childhood Families,

I have experienced such joy and fulfillment working with early childhood families in the years that I have worked in this school district!

When I retire from this position at the end of the semester I will remember with great respect and gratitude …the many wonderful children, parents and colleagues who have enriched my life! And I am certain the Early Childhood Mission State-ment will continue to guide me through new challenges and endeavors to forever … listen, learn teach and grow.

Nurturing Nature PlayTips for ParentsMany parents and other adults see the value of restoring nature-based play to children’s lives. It starts with getting kids into a patch of real nature where they are free to roam. The adult’s role is to be a gentle facilitator who unobtrusively watches over the play, without directing it. Let the chil-dren lead; give them the freedom to follow their own interests, discoveries, and delights as they explore nature.1. Travel down memory lane — Use your own good memories of nature

play to guide the experiences you’d like today’s children to enjoy. 2. Talk it up! — Be an advocate for nature play. Talk it up with friends,

teachers, parent organizations — anyone who can influence children’s lives and might join in efforts to restore nature play. And ask about folks’ own memories of childhood play; it’s a great conversation starter!

3. Plan on no plan — Get the kids to a rich natural area and let them decide what to do, where to explore, and how to play.

4. Trust in nature — It’s a fun kinda place that doesn’t need fancy play equipment or adult instructors! And don’t give up if you hear, “I’m bored.” Be patient, and kids will start exploring on their own.

5. Embrace flex time — Let the kids’ discoveries and active engagement determine the schedule. Watch their play, not your watch.

6. Small is beautiful — Nature play works great with very young children and they only need small bits of nature! Even crawling babies can delight in the smells and textures of a little herb garden.

7. All kids come in wash and dry — So what if it’s messy? Dress your child in play-friendly clothes. Keep old plastic bags handy to protect car seats from wet kids.

8. Wash, rinse, repeat — Frequent nature play is what best builds kids’ lasting bonds with the natural world. Make nature a favorite friend for them to play with, time and time again!

Bonus tip: No naturalist needed! You don’t need to be a nature expert. If your child finds something they’re interested in, use books or the internet to foster the learning process.

School Readiness...School Readiness in District 200 provides opportunities to participate in

child development programs that help children enter school with the skills needed for suc-cess. Parent participation is an important part of our program. Opportunities may include: • Information and referrals to services that may be helpful to your family. • Parent/child events and parent workshops to help support your important task of

parenting. • Preschool classes for children that could benefit, but may not otherwise have the

opportunity due to obstacles (such as tuition fees or transportation issues).

For more information, or answers to your questions, please contact us at:651-480-7678 or [email protected]

The Hastings Community Education Preschool Programs provide a variety of experiences that contribute to the growth and development of the preschool child and serve as a foundation for later school experi-ences. These programs recognize that:

l Each child is a unique individual and develops at his or her own rate.

l Parents are a child’s first and most important teachers.

l Play is a child’s work and is seen as a productive avenue for learning.

l A group experience fosters indepen-dence, builds self-confidence, and devel-ops self-identity outside of the child’s role in his or her family.

l Early literacy skills are the basis of success in reading.

Activity and experience involving “hands on”

participation is the basis for our preschool curriculum.

Class Size: Maximum class size is 20 students. Adult to student ratio is 1 to 10.

Staff: Our state department of edu-cation licensed teachers and experienced classroom aides meet or exceed state require-ments for this type of program.

Curriculum: Research-based and cen-tered on cognition, language, social-emotional and physical development.

All Community Education Preschool classes include children with identified special needs as well as typically developing chil-dren.

These classes conducted at the Tilden Center, 310 River Street.
