Get Really Spaced Out…Get ready for a multiplatform Summer of Space experience — anchored by

the highly anticipated American Experience six-hour film, Chasing the Moon and including new science and history programs. It begins in July, timed to the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Chasing the Moon, written, produced and directed by Academy Award nominee Robert Stone, airs Monday-Wednesday, July 8-10 at 9 pm/10 Mtn on KSPS. The film tells the story of the space race, from its earliest beginnings to the monumental achievement of the first lunar landing in 1969.

There will also be special episodes of Antiques Roadshow and NOVA, as well as special PBS presentations. For the full list of KSPS/PBS Summer of Space programs, please look across to Page 3 of this issue.

together to bring safe drinking water to communities across the Spokane Valley Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer. SAJB and KSPS have partnered for several years to help get out the message of how the integrity of the aquifer is vital to the entire region.

From the Board…As you read this issue of Prevue, you will see that there is lots going on at KSPS and in the community.

We have a fabulous staff at KSPS — small but mighty — that keeps things humming here at the station; but we couldn’t do it without our volunteers. This month we want to thank the dozens and dozens of volunteers who help with everything from the reception desk to answering phones for pledge drives. Our Board members and volunteers set up and take down and help out with events in the community like Fit Kids Day, that is coming right up in August. Our volunteers put in hundreds of hours each year and we give them a great big THANK YOU for the many ways in which you support KSPS. You are Friends indeed. If you haven’t had a chance yet to pitch in and help, give us a call to find out what volunteer opportunities might be waiting for you! We wish you a safe and wonderful summer.

The Summer of Space on KSPSGet ready for a multiplatform space experience — anchored by the highly anticipated American Experience six-hour film Chasing

Chasing the Moon, written, produced and directed by Academy Award nominee Robert Stone, premieres Monday-Wednesday, July 8-10 on KSPS. The film tells the story of the space race, from its earliest beginnings to the monumental achievement of the first lunar landing in 1969.

Here are more premieres that are ready to launch in the Summer of Space:

• Antiques Roadshow – We kick off the lineup on Monday, July 8, 9 pm, commemorating the 50th anniversary with the premiere of an all-new “Out of This World” special episode featuring stellar appraisals that include NASA memorabilia, space travel treasures, science fiction finds and more.

• 8 Days: To the Moon and Back – Wednesday, July 17, 8 pm A unique journey with the crew of Apollo 11 for their eight-day, three-hour, 18-minute and 35-second mission, premiering July 17. Rare mission audio takes viewers inside the spacecraft on its historic journey.

• Ancient Skies – Wednesdays, July 24 - Aug. 7, 8 pm This three-part presentation, beginning July 24, will show how centuries of knowledge, experimentation and engineering helped our ancestors explore outer space. Expert contributors and indigenous storytellers demystify astronomical myths with scientific explanations.

• NOVA – Wednesdays, 9 pm The signature PBS science program will present two new specials. On Wednesday, July 10, 9 pm, join the next generation of engineers who aim to take us “Back to the Moon” as a stepping stone for future human missions to Mars, the Asteroid Belt and beyond. Beginning Wednesday, July 24, 9 pm, “The Planets” treats us to an up-close look at some faraway worlds, including the dark side of Pluto, an ancient Martian waterfall and the storm twice the size of Earth.

• Secrets of the Dead “Galileo’s Moon” – Tuesday, July 2, 8 pm Sneaking in before the official start to the Summer of Space, SOTD uncovers the truth behind an alleged proof copy of Galileo’s Sidereus Nuncius with the astronomer’s signature.

There will also be numerous space-oriented encore series episodes and specials — too numerous to list here — sprinkled throughout the July and early-August schedule. Suffice to say that, if you want to get your space on, KSPS is the place to do it!

Molly of Denali

Molly of Denali is an action-adventure comedy that follows the adventures of feisty and resourceful 10-year-old Molly Mabray, an Alaska Native girl. Molly helps her mom and dad run the Denali Trading Post, a general store, bunkhouse and transport hub in the fictional village of Qyah, Alaska.

Each episode follows Molly, her dog Suki and her friends Tooey and Trini on their daily adventures in Alaska — from fishing to building snow forts to delivering a camera to friends on a volcano via dog sled.

Molly of Denali begins in its weekday morning and afternoon timeslots with a 60-minute premiere special — Monday, July 15 at 9:30 am and 5 pm. The premiere repeats Friday, July 19 at 9:30 am and 5 pm.

It was a place where families and friends played, picnicked and strolled: from the dance halls to the Midway,with bumper cars and carousel, miniature train and trolleys. “The Jack Rabbit” and “The Hammer” reigned. From 1889 to 1968, Natatorium Park was a “Spokane” place to be.

Indian Summers: Nespelem Art Colony

Founded by Washington State College Art Department faculty Worth Griffin and Clyfford Still, the Nespelem Art Colony created the first extensive visual record of the Native Americans of Eastern Washington, tribes that were thought to be rapidly diminishing in the 1930s.

Rumrunners’ Paradise: Spokane During ProhibitionThursday, Aug. 29, 8 pmNew Year’s Eve, 1915 was a party to end all parties in Spokane. At the stroke of midnight, every saloon in the state would be out of business. This would be the “last call” before statewide prohibition would be enacted, closing the taps four years before the rest of the nation. But even as revelers saluted the new “dry” year, a lucrative “wet” underworld was forming between Spokane and Canada.

To the Moon and Back…and AgainGrowing up I loved reading…and I was that kid who read biographies…because the world around

me was far more interesting than the ones I could make up. One of the first books I remember reading was a biography about John Glenn — how he became part of the first astronaut corps; how he became the first American to orbit the earth; and his sense of duty, honor and mission.

Fast-forward to 1969 when Glenn, and all of those who built the space program from the ground up, waited and watched along with the rest of the world as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took those first Small Steps for Man…and One Giant Leap for Mankind. I was fortunate to meet both John Glenn and Buzz Aldrin later in life…but that’s a story for another time.

50 years later — that event, those men and their story — are considered one the greatest moments of our nation’s existence. And to commemorate that event, July is all about space. First up is the PBS documentary Chasing the Moon — with never-before-seen film of the earliest days of the space program and taking us all the way to the moon. Following that will be a new documentary, 8 Days to the Moon and Back, which will feature never-before-heard classified mission audio and candid conversations with the Apollo 11 astronauts. Not to be left out, NOVA will bring us TWO new specials: Back to the Moon — where we meet the next generation of space engineers who plan to take us back to the moon and beyond; and The Planets, a five-part series that brings you a different view of the worlds beyond ours — the dark side of Pluto, a Martian waterfall and much, much more.

And speaking of more…you can’t do history on KSPS without a little help from Antiques Roadshow. This time around, it’s all space stuff — seriously — and true to the Roadshow mission, you won’t believe some of the stuff they found.

If I seem a bit excited about all of this… well…I am — how often do you get to channel your inner child, relive some great memories and see what’s next?

Oh wait…we bring that to you every day; and thanks to you…we’ll keep doing it.

In Passing…We sadly said goodbye

to our friend, Doug Wiley on April 21st. Doug had been living with Parkinson’s for some time and was recently diagnosed with inoperable brain tumors. After a brief stay in hospice he became an angel at the age of 83. Doug was a long-time volunteer at KSPS, helping with the Friends of KSPS in several roles from 1998-2013; and he was named Volunteer of the Year in 2007. We will miss this truly kind and giving gentleman.

Get Really Spaced Out…Get ready for a multiplatform Summer of Space experience — anchored by

the highly anticipated American Experience six-hour film, Chasing the Moon and including new science and history programs. It begins in July, timed to the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Chasing the Moon, written, produced and directed by Academy Award nominee Robert Stone, airs Monday-Wednesday, July 8-10 at 9 pm/10 Mtn on KSPS. The film tells the story of the space race, from its earliest beginnings to the monumental achievement of the first lunar landing in 1969.

There will also be special episodes of Antiques Roadshow and NOVA, as well as special PBS presentations. For the full list of KSPS/PBS Summer of Space programs, please look across to Page 3 of this issue.

together to bring safe drinking water to communities across the Spokane Valley Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer. SAJB and KSPS have partnered for several years to help get out the message of how the integrity of the aquifer is vital to the entire region.
