Science Science in a BagAges 7 - 9 Monday – Friday, July 18 - 22, 20169 am – Noon, Sibley 222Cost: $120.00 Explore the wonderful world of sci-ence through experiments that are all performed in plastic bags. Make an herb garden; experiment with eggs; grow mold on bread; explore the world of buoyancy and finish with a special frozen treat. We will use our science journals to make daily observations of our experiments and spend some time reading and research-ing about our creations. Instructor is Rebecca Duval, teacher at Morrisonville Elementary School.

Science with The Magic School BusAges 5 - 7 Monday – Friday, 9 - 11 amJuly 25 - 29, 2016Sibley 103Cost: $95. Jump aboard the Magic School Bus to explore science topics and dabble in experiments. Each day will begin with the reading of A Magic School Bus story. This will be followed by experiments based on the topic of the day. We may even get to see an episode or two of the popular show. Each day we will study a new topic and conduct exciting experiments. We’ll also learn about a famous scientist each day. BE A HAPPY CAMPER this summer and spend a week on an adventure with fun camping activities. Each day, we will explore what it takes to be an expert camper. We’ll create Nature Journals to keep track of the fun we have along the way and prepare for our own camping adventure. Get ready for a nature walk, scavenger hunt, delicious S’mores, camping crafts, and a whole lot of fun!

Enjoy interactive activi-ties that will help you learn more about plants and animals that make our natural environment so special. This gardening week will be full of discovery, experience, creating mini gardens, and getting dirty with dirt. Kids will begin seed sprouts, plant container herbs and vegetables, and build a soda bottle greenhouse. We will also complete art projects like painting with seed-themes and making play-doh mud. Escher is known widely for his beautiful tessellations (patterns of flat shapes with no overlaps or gaps). Students will each create their own tessellations with a variety of mediums, turning ordinary shapes into colorful masterpieces! We’ll discuss more techniques with pen, ink, and digital media. We’ll also work on marketing your creations using some of the leading avenues for webcomics and animations. We’ll briefly touch on the motion comic trends and explore some easy ways to add animation to

He made art by dripping and throwing paint onto huge canvases! How about Henri Matisse? He used paper cut outs to make his art work! Sound like fun? Join me for a week long adventure into the world of making art inspired by a few of my favorite artists! Each day will feature a new artist and a new technique to try. Melt and apply crayons onto a canvas while combining other painting and drawing skills. Create aquariums, flower gardens, shapes, words, trees of your own design. Making Lake Champlain Clay Creatures Ages 8 - 12Monday – Friday, August 1 - 5, 20161 - 4 pm, Sibley 319, Cost: $120.A bowl shaped like a trout? A lily pad dish? Maybe a cup in the shape of a freshwater snail? The possibilities are endless. We will make pottery that will be fun and func-tional using Lake Champlain as our source of artistic inspiration ! We will research all the cool animals that make up the ecosystem of the lake and create our own versions in ceramic clay. Tuesday- “It’s a Jungle Out There” Find out why the jungle is so important to our Earth and explore the animals that live in the jungle. Wednesday- “Space is the Place”- Space exploration, famous astronauts and stories about aliens & UFOs. Thursday- “Myth Busters”- Can you really catch a cold from the weather? Are yawns contagious? Do you have a healthy bit of time playing Minecraft? Why not combine your creativity while customizing your world of Minecraft? The Evolution of Steve: Social Studies in the World of MinecraftAges 10+Monday - Friday, 9 am - 3 pmJuly 11 - 15, 2016Yokum 100A Cost: $195. You’ve heard of the game, but what about the cool stuff you can learn from it? Just how big were the pyramid projects of Giza? Was life really easier for cavemen? What did the agricultural revolution mean for humans? What about the industrial revolution? Resource management and the Environ-ment? Laws? Cities? Communities? What’s the big deal? With our week long look at these questions, we’ll use Minecraft as our world to experiment and look for some answers. We’ll investigate classic building structures and recreate them in Minecraft, use the basics of survival to talk about the change of humans over time and we’ll look at resource availability and learn what it takes to be a good steward of our own backyard.

Architecture 101: Explore, Design, BuildAges 10 - 13Monday – Friday, August 1 - 5, 20169 - 11 am, Sibley 103, Cost: $95. This course will “build” up your knowledge of architecture--from building basics to original architectural design. The first two days of this course is all about exploring architecture near and far, small and large--we’ll take a walking fieldtrip around Plattsburgh, looking at historic architecture and modern design. There’s a lot more to your local architecture than you’d think! The next few days are all about design: what makes a good building? We’ll test theories with hands-on projects--how sturdy is your arch bridge? And we’ll start designing our own architectural masterpiece from scratch! The last few days of the camp we’ll be putting it all together. We’ll learn con-struction basics, select real building materials, and get going on making a 3d model of your own architectural design! Each day we will read an entire book and do exciting, fun activities to go along with the theme for the day. The schedule for the week will be as follows: Monday – Dolphins at Daybreak - Join Annie and Jack as they take a journey to the middle of the ocean! Tuesday – Lions at Lunchtime- Annie and Jack explore the vast plains of Africa. Wednesday – Twister on Tuesday – The Magic Tree House whisks Jack and Annie back to the 1870’s! They land on the prairie near a one-room school-house where they meet a teenage schoolteacher, some cool kids, and have a very scary surprise! Thursday – Season of the Sandstorms – Jack and Annie travel back in time to a desert in the Middle East at the behest of Merlin who has given them a rhyme to help on their mission. From camel rides and oases to ancient writings and dangerous sandstorms, here’s another Magic Tree House filled with mystery, history, and magic that kids love to read about. Friday – Eve of the Emperor Penguin – Annie and Jack are in the super-cold continent of Antarctica! Their task is to find the Cave of the Ancient Crown. In this course we’ll take the idea of web comics beyond the static and into the realm of animation and interactivity. We will work with Photo-shop and Flash to create rich, engaging comics that react to the viewer. Animate an action scene, include hidden and drop out information and animations on the user’s click, and other interactive features to take your static drawings to the next level. Geology and Terrain Generation with Minecraft Ages 10+Monday - Friday, 12:30 - 3:30 pmJuly 18 - 22, 2016Yokum 100ACost: $140.We’ll explore the world, and others, as we learn about what causes the various biomes and landforms we see around us. How do the mountains in the Himalayas compare to those in the Adirondacks, and why do they look different? What types of rocks are there, and how do they change based on wind, water, and fire? We’ll explore similarities of landforms and biomes around the globe along with the effects of tectonics and erosion to better understand what makes hills, valleys, and plains. With this knowledge we’ll create our own worlds in Minecraft using several tools including World Painter, World Edit, Photoshop, and even NASA imaging. Digital PhotographyAges 9 - 12Monday – Friday, July 25 - 29, 20169 am - NoonSibley 308 Cost: $120.Join us to learn what your digital camera can do. We will explore all types of photography (macro, trick, action, and self portraits). We will work with many fea-tures in the camera including flash modes and settings. Each day we will take pictures, develop them, and scrapbook our results in a notebook. Each student will bring home their own photography notebook to practice and teach others in their family. We will finish the week with a Photography Show for our families to see our results. Please feel free to bring your own camera so you can learn all about it. Cameras are available to use if you do not have one. We will print pictures daily and have a Photo Exhibit to display for our families. Recreating History - A Minecraft Exploration of Local History Ages 10+Monday - Friday, July 25 - 29, 201612:30 - 3:30 pmYokum 100A Cost: $140.The game of Minecraft has turned into a tool for recreating the worlds of the past and future. Students and Teachers alike, are using Minecraft to recreate history, map the land around us (have you seen the scale replica of the British Isles?) and explore the build-ings of the past. This half day course will focus on learning about our local history and recreating (and improving?) the buildings and architecture of our backyard and beyond. 3D Animation and Video Starring Your Favorite Minecraft CharactersAges 12+ Monday - Frieday,August 1 - 5, 201612:30 - 3:30 pmSibley 308 Cost: $140.This course opens up a new world of 3D animation, puppeteering and storytell-ing using the characters you know and love from Minecraft. We’ll work with 3D Animation and output video to create animated shorts star-ring your favorite members of the Minecraft world. We’ll use the free program Mine-imator to cast your content to light. Import your own builds from Minecraft as scenery, props, and even include your character skins to tell stories! Instructor is Dean Delano, Adjunct Lecturer, SUNY Plattsburgh.
