Explore and create in a beautiful setting that fosters the imagination. We will be outside using our senses to delve into the nature center‘s woods, marsh and prairie.     Citizen Science GRADES 6 – 8 (2016-17 SCHOOL YEAR) Westwood Hills Nature Center, 8300 W. Franklin Ave. Learn how to become a citizen scientist. Collect, observe, survey and monitor animals and plants at Westwood. Be inspired by some citizen scientists and get excited learning about the natural world through a scientific lens.     Animal Myths GRADES 1 – 5 (2016-17 SCHOOL YEAR) Westwood Hills Nature Center, 8300 W. Franklin Ave. If you believe all the myths about nature, Westwood would be a strange place. The toads would give you warts, the moss would provide directions and the daddy-long legs would be deadly. We’ll find out what is myth and what is fact. We’ll also look at how mythology might be inspired by real animals and plants.     Outdoor Skills GRADES 5 – 8 (2016-17 SCHOOL YEAR) Westwood Hills Nature Center, 8300 W. Franklin Ave. Take full advantage of Westwood’s natural spaces by practicing survival skills, orienteering, canoeing, archery and more. End with an overnight camp-out at the nature center. Tents and food will be provided.     Everything Grows Grades 1 – 2 (2016-17 school year) Westwood Hills Nature Center, 8300 W. Franklin Ave. Animals grow up, but how? Learn about different animals by playing games, exploring outdoors, reading stories and watching Westwood’s silly puppets.     Wild about Animals GRADES 3 – 5 (2016-17 SCHOOL YEAR) Westwood Hills Nature Center, 8300 W. Franklin Ave. Snakes, turtles, frogs and more! We’ll have the chance to take Westwood’s animals out from behind the glass, touch them, feed them and learn how to responsibly care for them. We will also search for animals in their natural habitat.     Map Makers GRADES 1 – 5 (2016-17 SCHOOL YEAR) Westwood Hills Nature Center, 8300 W. Franklin Ave. Search for treasures throughout the nature center. Create your own maps and scavenger hunts. Learn how to navigate Westwood’s wild spaces with fun activities using maps and other tools.     Code Breakers GRADES 1 – 5 (2016-17 SCHOOL YEAR) Westwood Hills Nature Center, 8300 W. Franklin Ave. A code can mean so many things; a way to deliver top secret messages, computer programs and braille are all examples of codes. We’ll work together to explore, make and decipher codes in and around the nature center.   • Safari Escapade GRADES 1 – 5 (2016-17 SCHOOL YEAR) Westwood Hills Nature Center, 8300 W. Franklin Ave. Wild animals are everywhere at Westwood! Venture into different habitats in search of wildlife. We’ll use nets, scopes, binoculars and more to find and observe many of the fascinating creatures that make their home in the park. DAY DATES+TIME Activity# Th July 7, 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. 108303-01 FEE $25 per child (resident) / $30 (non-resident) Registration deadline: when program is full.

    Bike Overnight Adventure Camp GRADES 5 – 8 (2016-17 SCHOOL YEAR) Westwood Hills Nature Center, 8300 W. Franklin Ave. Bring your adventurous spirit along with your bike to the nature center. Learn basic bike safety, maintenance, proper riding technique and route planning. The highlight will be a 20-mile bike ride to Gale Woods Farm and back the next day. Campers will experience farm life by feeding livestock and collecting eggs. Cook over a campfire and spend the night in a tent. Tents and meals will be provided for the overnight.     Super Sneaky Nature GRADES 1 – 3 (2016-17 SCHOOL YEAR) Westwood Hills Nature Center, 8300 W. Franklin Ave. In the quest to eat or be eaten, being well- concealed can make all the difference for an animal. Learn how different animals stay hidden and survive. We’ll employ stealth and camouflage to go undercover, evade detection and spy on some sneaky creatures. Shhh!     Investigate and experiment! Use common household objects, natural materials, simple tools and a little science to create things that pop, fizz and bang. Be prepared to put

    your creativity and problem solving skills to work as you work with fellow campers on exciting science projects and experiments.     Canoeing GRADES 5 – 8 (2016-17 SCHOOL YEAR) Westwood Hills Nature Center, 8300 W. Franklin Ave. Explore the marsh by canoe. Paddling is a terrific way to see wildlife and experience Westwood Lake. Enjoy a hike to our canoe launch for instruction in basic canoeing strokes and boating safety followed by fun on the water. Canoes, paddles and life jackets provided.
