The Abington YMCA provides a safe, nurturing, camp experience for all children. Our goal is to provide your children with an exciting, fun, and safe atmosphere.

During the camp day, kids will participate in many different activities such as arts & crafts, exercise, reading programs, sports, nature studies and character development exercises. Summer Camp also includes weekly themes, field trips and free lunch Friday!

GENERAL OVERVIEW

Registration for camp begins Monday, January 30, 2017. Camp registration can be taken at the Abington Y Welcome Center:Monday - Friday: 9 AM - 8 PM Saturday & Sunday: 10 AM - 5 PM

All campers must have a current Y membership; otherwise a Philadelphia Freedom Valley YMCA Full Privilege or Youth Program Membership must be purchased. Registration closes two weeks before each camp week begins. Please be sure to register in advance, as our sessions fill up quickly. Registration requires a non-refundable $25 per week deposit. Deposits are applied to camp fees. Registration weeks are transferable until June 5, 2017.

PEANUT FREE - The Abington Summer Camp is peanut-free. Many children in our programs have severe allergies to peanut products. Please make sure that you’re not sending any type of peanut products into camp with your child.

The LIT program is designed for teens who demonstrate the ability to accept the responsibilities that come with the challenges of leadership. Teens will work with camp groups and shadow key camp staff in a variety of program areas.

Teens should have a positive attitude, ability to work in a group setting and a willingness to work with children as young as 4 years old.

Campers are required to attend 6-weeks throughout the summer. Space is limited and acceptance is contingent upon completion of application and interview process.

The fun starts early for our littlest campers ages 4 - 5 years. Camp Small feet is designed with hands-on learning and fun in mind. arts and crafts, songs, and games are centered around weekly themes to engage curious preschoolers. Swimming and outside play are a highlight of summer camp for this age group.

All campers must be toilet-trained.

Camp Pioneers focuses on a traditional Summer Camp experience for children in grades 1 – 2. Campers learn how to create new friendships and explore the natural world around them. Camp activities like art, music, nature, swimming and sports are designed to build confidence, new skills, and untapped talent. Themes, field trips and special events make it a different adventure every week.


PIONEERS AVAILABLE SESSIONS: 3 - 10

Camp Explorers focuses on a traditional Summer Camp experience for children in grades 3 – 4.

Campers become more self-reliant and will explore new interests with activities like art, music, nature, swimming and sports. Themes, field trips and special events make it a different adventure every week.


EXPLORERS AVAILABLE SESSIONS: 3 - 10

Camp Pathfinders gives kids in grades 5 – 6 a traditional camp experience with an emphasis on independence, and learning the importance of team building and leadership skills. Campers will enjoy fun-filled activities such as art, music, nature, swimming and sports designed to build confidence and encourage exploration into new areas. Themes, field trips and special events make it a different adventure every week.

Camp Trailblazers is intended for young teens and is designed to build their leadership skills, let them explore different career opportunities, give them a chance to make a difference in their community and most importantly, to let them have a fun-filled indoor and outdoor summer experience! ADVENTURE CAMP AVAILABLE SESSIONS: 9 - 10

Children will board the YMCA bus and travel to a fun location each day. Trip locations will be provided via e-mail two weeks in advance. Camp fee covers admission, staffing, and busses. All campers must be dropped off by 8:00 AM and picked up no earlier than 5:00 PM to allow for enough travel time.

Specialty Camps include daily recreational swimming and a weekly field trip or an in-house special event. Campers travel to exciting off-site locations and experience hands-on and interactive live performances. In-house events take place at Copper Beech Elementary School.

This camp is designed to motivate young campers to be the best version of themselves that they can be. Children will explore developmentally appropriate topics with an emphasis on healthy living, physical fitness, self-awareness and esteem. Children will graduate with a better understanding of what is needed to take care of their bodies, both physically and mentally, and what it means to love who they are in the process. Campers will participate in recreational and instructional swimming, a weekly field trip and receive free lunch on Friday’s.

CSI CAMP AVAILABLE SESSIONS: 9, 10

This exciting camp is based on the hit TV series CSI. Children will reconstruct a crime scene, compile and investigate evidence, interrogate witnesses, and solve the crime. This camp will incorporate science, math and writing and helps develop their communication skills. All children will also receive a YMCA C.S.I shirt at the beginning of the week. Camp activities also include daily instructional and recreational swimming, group games, arts and crafts, the Y’s Boost Reading Program and more.

8 - 13 YEARS

DANCE CAMP AVAILABLE SESSIONS: 2 - 10

Jumps, kicks and turns will start out each camper’s day! Campers will be introduced to ballet, jazz, hip-hop and more. Camp activities also include instructional and recreational swimming, group games, arts and crafts, the Y’s Boost Reading Program and more. Campers MUST be registered weeks 6 through 8 in Dance Camp in order to participate in the dance portion of our Gala. Campers will also participate in the 7th Annual Abington YMCA Camp Gala that will be held on Friday, August 4th, 2017.


7 - 12 YEARS

LITTLE PICASSOS CAMP AVAILABLE SESSIONS: 11 - 12

In this camp children will explore a variety of hands on and open ended art experiences including: painting, drawing, sculpting, and more. Camp activities include instructional and recreational swimming, group games, arts and crafts, the Y’s Boost Reading Program and more. Children will also attend a weekly field trip.

Children will learn the basics of kitchen safety and healthy eating while creating new and exciting recipes. Children who participate in week 7 & 8 will create the menu for our 7th Annual YMCA Camp Gala that will take place on Friday, August 4th, 2017.

Does your child love to sing, act and perform all the time? The Abington Y is offering Theater Camp for children who are interested in learning more about musicals, acting, producing shows, dances and more. Our Theater Camp will also give a mini presentation led by professional staff at our 7th Annual Abington Y Camp Gala at the end of the summer on Friday, August 4, 2017.

This is a 2-week session. Campers must enroll for both camp weeks.

7 - 14 YEARS

What would you do if you had only 3 minutes to complete what is perceived as an impossible task? In this camp, children will be encouraged to put their brains and bodies to work!

Campers will be challenged in this camp to use team building, cooperation, and creativity to complete physical obstacles, brain teasers and hands on challenges. This co-ed camp is designed to help children understand and learn the game of basketball. Camp includes drills, skills, games, and most importantly, teamwork. Camp activities include instructional and recreational swimming, weekly field trips, group games, arts and crafts, Boost Reading Program and more. Campers will also participate in the 6th Annual Abington YMCA Camp Gala that will be held on Friday, August 4, 2017. Campers MUST be registered weeks 6-8 in Basketball Camp in order to participate in the basketball portion of our Gala.

7 - 13 YEARS

CHEER-NASTICS CAMP AVAILABLE SESSIONS: 12

Full Day: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM Full Privilege: $260/wk. | Program: $290/wk. Location: Abington YMCACampers must be registered weeks 6 through 8 in Cheer-Nastics Camp in order to participate in the Gala presentation.

Campers will train in different age/ability groups under the supervision of experienced cheer and gymnastics staff. Participants will explore beginner and intermediate levels of gymnastics with exposure to: spring board, balance beams, tumbling and more! Campers will also dance, cheer, show spirit, and practice beginner level stunts. Camp activities also include daily instructional and recreational swimming, group games, arts and crafts, the Y’s Boost Reading Program and more!

All campers will prepare through the summer to showcase a routine in our 7th Annual Abington YMCA Camp Gala that will be hold on Friday, August 4, 2017.

6 - 12 YEARS

Specialty Camps include daily recreational swimming and a weekly field trip or an in-house special event. Campers travel to exciting off-site locations and experience hands-on and interactive live performances.

In-house events take place at Copper Beech Elementary School.

Daily recreational swimming is included in all Sports Camps. Participants must wear sneakers.


MARTIAL ARTS CAMP (2-WEEK SESSION) AVAILABLE SESSIONS: 7 - 8

Campers will learn the basic fundamentals and skills of Martial Arts Karate. A qualified Martial Arts instructor will teach self-discipline and self-confidence skills in a fun, safe environment. Participants receieve a FREE uniform with this program!

Activities also include daily instructional and recreational swimming, group games, arts and crafts, the Y’s Boost Reading Program and more.

Campers will also participate in the 7th Annual Abington YMCA Camp Gala* on Friday, August 4, 2017.

Little Champs, Junior Rookies, and Varsity Squad are offered to children and teens interested in learning the fundamentals of sports and games. Sports Combo camps are designed to help children and teens understand the rules of each sport as well as develop skills through drills, play, and teamwork.

Campers will participate in scrimmages and games, and learn the value of sportsmanship in a non-competitive atmosphere.

This camp is designed for children who enjoy swimming and would like to enhance their skills in a competitive setting. Campers will work on stroke development, starts/turns, teamwork, and will receive an introduction to competitive swimming. Additional activities include daily instructional and recreational swimming, group games, arts and crafts, the Y’s Boost Reading Program and more. Space is limited.

All participants will receive a YMCA swim cap at the beginning of the camp week. To schedule a testing time, please contact Chad Peterman in the Aquatics Office at ext. 1824.

ABILITY CAMP

CAMP MAGIC AVAILABLE SESSIONS: 3 - 10


Camp Magic holds the philosophy that, children with special needs should have the same opportunity to participate in many of the same types of activities as other campers. This camp offers positive integration with other campers when possible to enable all children to learn and appreciate all individuals. These campers must be ambulatory and able to function on a 1:4 ratio in a group setting. Activities are designed to provide a whole group experience while fulfilling individual needs and include instructional and recreational swimming.

Camp Magic participants have the option of participating in a weekly field trip or an in-house special event. Your child will travel to exciting off-site locations and experience hands-on and interactive live performances. In-house events take place at Copper Beech Elementary. The trip schedule will be distributed via email and weekly reminders will be provided in newsletter form.

Half Day options are available to accommodate Extended School Year participants. Contact Ashley Ross, Ability Coordinator for more information at ext. 1822.

AGE PLACEMENT

Campers will be placed in their camp groups based on their age at the time of registration by the parent. We do not guarantee changes or transfers of children based on a birthday that occurs during our Summer Camp operational dates. Parents with children that have birthday’s falling within our camp program weeks will need to contact the Camp Directors to inform them of this type of request. The Camp Directors will try to accommodate changes based on their discretion and the camper’s ability to adjust to the new camp age group.

GENERAL POLICIES

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCEThe Y is accessible to all individuals regardless of age, income or background. The Abington YMCA counts on the generosity of our members and donors to keep our doors open to whoever needs a place to go to help them be more healthy, confident and connected to our community. Financial Assistance can be used for any Y program or membership.

If you need help with payment of any portion of Summer Camp fees, please contact the Welcome Center to request a Financial Assistance application. Financial Assistance is awarded on a first come first serve basis. All applications must be submitted by Monday, June 5, 2017.

PARENT HANDBOOKUpon receipt of a completed enrollment form and payment of registration and membership fees, parents will receive a Parent Information Handbook. The handbook contains details about YMCA Summer Camp policies and procedures. Parents must sign and return the Receipt of Parents Handbook form located in the back of the handbook.

REFUND/CREDIT POLICYThere are no refunds for deposits. Camp cancellations submitted in writing will be issued a refund less that deposit if the request is received prior to June 1, 2017. After June 1, 2017 refunds will be issued in the form of credit towards any YMCA program. No credit will be granted for a cancellation requested less than 2 weeks prior to the start of the camp session.

SUPERVISION 1:1The Abington YMCA is not able to provide 1:1 supervision of any child in our branch programs. If your child requires 1:1 supervision it will be the parent’s responsibility to inform the YMCA and provide that service for their child.

TSS POLICYTherapeutic Support Staff (TSS) are permitted to accompany children in our YMCA Summer Camp, Child Care and School-Age programs at the Abington Y. For more information, please contact the Camp Director.

ADA COMPLIANCEIndividuals with disabilities may request a workplace accommodation, a modification to a program, policy or practice, or auxiliary aids or services by contacting a Branch ADA Compliance Officer or the Association Office ADA Compliance Officer. Individuals with disabilities also have the option of contacting the Branch Program Director in person or by calling the YMCA branch’s main telephone number and asking for the Program Director.
