THE DEADLINE FOR THE AGM EDITION IS SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 13TH

EDITORIAL Hi All
I think many of you know that I am East Yorkshire born and
very proud of it so when I saw the following short letter in a
newspaper, I knew I had to share it with you.
It said:-
THREE TYPES OF PEOPLE
As anyone lucky enough to be born in Yorkshire will probably tell you,
there are only 3 types of people in this world:
1] Yorkshire People 2] Those who wish to be Yorkshire people
AND 3] Those with no ambition at all!
Earlier this year I was sent an email that said there were 57 reasons living
in Yorkshire ruins you for life. Obviously I have not got enough space to
repeat it all but turn to p6 & p7 to see some of them.
Hopefully anyone not from Yorkshire reading this and seeing the pictures,
might realise it is well worth coming to visit Yorkshire, where they will
be made to feel very welcome and will be well looked after!
Well our 40th Birthday Rally is over and I hope you all enjoyed it
whether you only came for the weekend or you were there for it all!
I was especially pleased with the support you gave to the Yorkshire Air
Ambulance—see page 7. Please write and tell me what your favourite bits
of the weekend were and they will go in the AGM Edition. Would love to
hear from the children too!
I would again like to thank all the past chairmen and others who made a
contribution to the Easter About. If there is anyone else out there who has
a story or stories to tell about their caravanning years, I would like to hear
from you. Also any birthdays [and special anniversaries] that I have not
got in my book—especially the children who love to see their names in
print—just email me the details and I will add you to my list of dates.
Wherever you go this summer, I hope the sun shines.
Best Wishes Janice PS Special thanks for the two write ups I received by post.

DEADLINE FOR THE A.G.M.EDITION IS SUN SEPT 13th

CHAIRMAN’S CHAT Hello and Welcome to the Summer About.
Many of you will be getting in the holiday mode and if my prayers are answered the sun will shine so we can all have a
wonderful summer season. If you are still pondering where to go
for your holidays why not try one of our holiday rallies within the Centre.
I have some wonderful memories of our 40th Birthday Celebration Rally and
with the amount of cards and emails received I’m sure I can say it was a huge
success. It was lovely to see so many there to help celebrate, however we are
only halfway through the year so we can still continue celebrating our 40th year.
The Centre Sports are held once again at Hutton Cranswick playing fields, it was a great weekend last year with a vast amount of participants with all the Sports
Trophies awarded, I would love to see an action replay this year. [It will have
happened by the time you read this so hope it went well. ED]
Joint Yorkshire Sports at Rufforth is held the following weekend, where the six
Yorkshire Centres compete against each other, it would be great if we had teams
for the various sport events. I hope lots of you come along and join us, East
Yorkshire Centre is the best, so lets show them. [We did well, details in next About]
September is a very busy month. On Tuesday 8th we have our Rally Planning night at North Cave Village Hall. If you are interested in running a rally why not
pop along and see what rallies needs marshals. We already have a few new
venues for next year. [See centre page of this About for more details.]
Joint Yorkshire Centre Six Star Rally follows, a rally for all the family and this
year is celebrating their 30th. Further details are on page 80 in your rally book,
please take time to read all what is going on
The following weekend is our Autumn Dinner Dance, held at the York Race
Course—an absolutely brilliant venue with stunning views of York from the balcony, good food, great band and true friendship is an ideal menu for a superb
night. Don’t just take my word for it, come along and see for yourselves.
Our AGM takes place the following weekend. Have you ever thought of joining
our happy friendly East Yorkshire Committee? Think no more, take action, have
a word with either myself or a Centre Committee member—we welcome new
members and new ideas.
The quartermaster job needs filling from September. Neil who has been quarter-
master since 2012 has done an excellent job and filled this position for the last year as a non-Committee member and is now retiring. It is an essential role as
rally marshals do need equipment. Need more information? Then contact Neil or
Jane Marchant. They will be pleased to discuss what this position entails. contd

Don’t forget the Photographic Competition also held AGM weekend. I would like to see a bumper year of photos submitted. Please send entries to Alan
Woodhead—details in the brochure—no later than 22nd Sept.
Wishing you all a wonderful summer

Children’s Christmas Party on Saturday 19th December. 11.30am til 2pm at St
John Ambulance Hall in Beverley Tickets available from the AGM weekend
[NOT THE 20th AS STATED IN THE BROCHURE]
TABLETS AND PADS
Please take a minute to look at your photographs on your
tablets and I pads or phones ,there might just be a winner there
for the Photographic Competition
(and for us oldies don’t forget your camera ?).
Remember you do not have to wait until September
to send in your photographs for the competition,
you can send them to me at any time.
Any questions please call on 01482 655265 or email me at
[email protected] Alan Woodhead
QUARTERMASTER NEEDED—QUARTERMASTER NEEDED
As Sandra has mentioned in her Chairman’s Chat we are in need of a
Quartermaster. Neil finished on Committee last year but said he would do
it for another year as a Non Committee Job. We have a Lock-up in
Beverley so you would not need to use your own garden shed or garage.
Please ring or speak to Neil or Jane about what the job entails.
Their Phone No is in the 2015 Brochure
REMEMBER—YOUR CENTRE NEEDS YOU!
Also if you would like to serve on the Committee then speak to any of the
Centre Officers for more details of what is expected of you. We really
need new blood to help the Centre go forward!

SOME OF THE 57 REASONS I MENTION IN MY EDITORIAL
Because York Minster is
Europe’s largest gothic cathedral.
Because you can still ride a steam train across our majestic viaducts
Because the
Victoria Quarter in Leeds is the finest Victorian shopping
arcade in the country.
Because some of the buildings on the Shambles
in York date back to the 14th century.
Because even our ruins are better than the buildings
in other places.
7
Because we build proper walls without cement.
Because views like this are
only ever moments away.
Because views like this
in Knaresborough can
transport you to another world. A Yorkshire world.
Because there’s nothing quite like
a summer’s day
at the Yorkshire seaside.
Because Yorkshire is full of magic.
And because,
at the end of the day,
there’s nowhere quite like Yorkshire.

CHARITY UPDATE I WOULD LIKE TO THANK EVERYONE WHO DONATED ITEMS OR GAVE
MONEY TO OUR CHARITY ACTIVITIES OVER MAY DAY WEEKEND
ALSO THANKS TO ALL THE MEMBERS WHO GAVE & BOUGHT
PROMISES IN JOHN HOLROYD‘S AUCTION
I AM ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTED TO TELL YOU THAT
OVER THE WEEKEND WE RAISED £2,500
One of the helicopters managed to pay us a visit on the very cold Saturday morning . They were
a bit delayed as they had been called out earlier
in the morning and so had to go back to base to
refuel and restock supplies. Because of this and it being so cold, there were not as many people
there to see it when it
did arrive. One person who did was Sheila
Holdstock, whose son
was recued 2 years ago and one of the paramedics was actually at his rescue. Quite emotional for Sheila and
we wish John well as he is still not fully recovered.
I WOULD LIKE TO THANK DRIFFIELD SHOW GROUND FOR THE USE OF THE
GREEN ROOM FOR OUR SUNDAY CHARITY EVENT AS IT SAVED A LOT OF
TABLE AND CHAIR MOVING IN THE RIX PAVILION. I WOULD ALSO LIKE
TO THANK ALL WHO HELPED GET THE ROOM READY ON THE SATURDAY
AND RAN THE STALLS FOR ME AND ALSO THE CATERING TEAM WHO PROVIDED THE CREAM TEAS IN THE NEXT ROOM AT THE SAME TIME &
THE BACON BUTTIES ON THE MONDAY MORNING. I AM NOT NAMING
ANYONE AS I AM SURE TO MISS SOMEONE OUT. THE ONLY ONE I WILL
MENTION IS MY HUSBAND RICHARD AS HE KEPT ME SANE!
THE TEDDY WAS WON BY JUDITH LEECH
—THE DATE WAS APRIL 30TH AND SHE HAD MAY 1ST
THE TREASURE HUNT WINNERS WERE RON WARNER, ALAN BAILEY, JOHN
BLOOM , & BETHANY LLOYD [WHO ALSO WON THE SWEETS]
THE WHISKY WAS WON BY JOANNE INGLE
WE WILL BE HAVING A RAFFLE ON THE FRIDAY NIGHT OF THE AGM TO
HELP BOOST OUR FINAL TOTAL SO ANY PRIZES WILL BE VERY WELCOME.

PARKING IN DUBLIN [from several people] On a bitterly cold winters morning a husband and wife in Dublin were listening
to the radio during breakfast. They heard the announcer say, “We are going to
have 8 to 10 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the even num-bered side of the street, so that the snowploughs can get through. So the good
wife went out and moved her car”. A week later, while they were eating break-
fast again, the radio announcer said, “We are expecting 10 to 12 inches of snow
today. You must park on the odd numbered side of the street, so that the snow-ploughs can get through. The good wife went out and moved the car again”
The next week they are again having breakfast, when the radio announcer says,
We are expecting 12 to 14 inches of snow today. You must park....” then the electric power went off. The good wife was very upset and with a worried look
on her face said I don't know what to do. Which side of the street do I need to
park on so the snowploughs can get through?” Then with the love and under-
standing in his voice that all men who are married to Blondes exhibit, the
husband replied, “Why don't you just leave the ruddy car in the garage this time”
MY TRAVEL PLANS [from several people]
I have been in many places, but I've never been in Cahoots. Apparently,
you can't go alone. You have to be in Cahoots with someone.
I've also never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes you there.
I have, however, been in Sane. They don't have an airport; you have to be
driven there. I have made several trips there, thanks to my friends, family
and work. I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and
I'm not too much on physical activity anymore.
I have also been in Doubt. That is a sad place to go, and I try not to visit
there too often. I've been in Flexible, but only when it was very important
to stand firm. Sometimes I'm in Capable, and I go there more often as I'm
getting older. One of my favourite places to be is in Suspense! It really
gets the adrenalin flowing and pumps up the old heart! At my age I need
all the stimuli I can get!
I may have been in Continent, but I don't remember what country I was
in. It's an age thing. They tell me it is very wet and damp there.
Antiques Road Show Paddy took 2 stuffed dogs to Antiques Road show "Ooh!" said the presenter,
"This is a very rare set, produced by the celebrated Johns Brothers taxidermists who operated in London at the turn of last century. Do you have any idea what
they would fetch if they were in good condition?" "Sticks?" Paddy said.

EMAIL ADDRESS MISTAKE
A Minneapolis couple decided to go to Florida to thaw out during a particularly icy winter. They planned to stay at the same hotel where they spent their honey-
moon 20 years earlier. Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to coordinate
their travel schedules. So, the husband left Minnesota and flew to Florida on
Thursday, with his wife flying down the following day. The husband checked into the hotel. There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an email
to his wife. However, he accidentally left out one letter in her email address, and
without realizing his error, sent the e-mail.
Meanwhile, somewhere in Houston, a widow had just returned home from her husband's funeral. He was a Baptist minister who was called home to glory
following a heart attack.
The widow decided to check her e-mail expecting messages from relatives and
friends. After reading the first message, she screamed and fainted.
The widow's son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor, and saw the
computer screen which read:-
To: My Loving Wife
Subject: I've Arrived Date: March 21, 2012
I know you're surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now and
you are allowed to send emails to your loved ones. I've just arrived and have
been checked in.
I've seen that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Looking
forward to seeing you then! Hope your journey is as uneventful as mine was.
P. S. Sure is hot down here!!!
Thank Goodness It's Friday
A business man got into an elevator in a building.
When he entered the elevator, there was a blonde already inside and she
greeted him by saying, "T-G-I-F" (letters only).
He smiled at her and replied, "S-H-I-T" (letters only)."
She looked at him, puzzled, and said, "T-G-I-F" again.
He acknowledged her remark again by answering, "S-H-I-T."
The blond was trying to be friendly, so she smiled her biggest smile and
said as sweetly as possibly "T-G-I-F" another time.
The man smiled back and once again replied with a quizzical expression,
"S-H-I-T."
The blond finally decided to explain things, and this time she said,
"T-G-I-F, Thank Goodness It's Friday, get it?"
The man answered, "Sorry Honey, It's Thursday." [from several people]

Money, money, money It can buy a House But not a Home
It can buy a Bed But not Sleep
It can buy a Clock But not Time
It can buy you a Book But not Knowledge It can buy you a Position But not Respect
It can buy you Medicine But not Health
It can buy you Blood But not Life
So you see, Money isn't everything. and it often causes pain & suffering.
I tell you all this because I am your Friend, and as your Friend I want to take away your pain and suffering...
So send me all your money and I will suffer for you.
A more true Friend you will never find.
Why do supermarkets make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front?
Why do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries, and a diet coke?
Why do banks leave vault doors open and then chain the pens to the counters?
Why do we leave cars worth thousands of pounds in our driveways and put our useless junk in the garage?
Why does the sun lighten our hair, but darkens our skin?
Why can't women put on mascara with their mouth closed? Why don't you ever see the headline 'Psychic Wins Lottery'?
Why is 'abbreviated' such a long word?
Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavouring, & dish washing liquid made with real lemons?
Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker?
Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour?
Why didn't Noah swat those two mosquitoes? You know that indestructible black box that is used on airplanes? Then ...
Why don't they make the whole plane out of that stuff??
Why don't sheep shrink when it rains? Why isn't there mouse-flavoured cat food?
Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?
If flying is so safe, why do they call the airport the terminal?

God's Pharmacy! Amazing! I first sent this in to the ABOUT some years ago but after receiving it again as an email
from Margaret Hearty, think it is worth repeating as it is so interesting!
It's been said that God first separated the salt water from the fresh, made dry land,
planted a garden, made animals and fish... All before making a human.
He made and provided what we'd need before we were born.
God left us a great clue as to what foods help what part of our body!
A sliced Carrot looks like the human eye. The pupil, iris and radiating lines
look just like the human eye. And YES, science now shows carrots
greatly enhance blood flow to and function of the eyes. A Tomato
has four chambers and is red. The heart has four chambers and is
red. All of the research shows tomatoes are loaded with lycopene
and are indeed pure heart and blood food.
Grapes hang in a cluster that has the shape of the heart. Each grape looks like a blood cell and all of the research today shows
grapes are also profound heart and blood vitalizing food.
A Walnut looks like a little brain, a left and right hemisphere, upper
cerebrums and lower cerebellums. Even the wrinkles or folds on the nut are
just like the neo-cortex. We now know walnuts help
develop more than three (3) dozen neuron-transmitters for brain function.
Kidney Beans actually heal and help maintain kidney function and yes,
they look exactly like the human kidneys.
Celery, Bok Choy, Rhubarb and many more look just like bones. These
foods specifically target bone strength. Bones are 23% sodium and these
foods are 23% sodium. If you don't have enough sodium in your diet, the
body pulls it from the bones, thus making them weak. These
foods replenish the skeletal needs of the body.
Avocadoes, Eggplant and Pears target the health and function of the
womb and cervix of the female - they look just like these organs. Today's research shows that when a woman eats one avocado a week, it balances hormones,
sheds unwanted birth weight, and prevents cervical cancers And how profound is this?
It takes exactly nine (9) months to grow an avocado from blossom to ripened fruit.
Figs are full of seeds and hang in twos when they grow. Figs increase the
mobility of male sperm and increase the numbers of Sperm as well to over-
come male sterility. Olives assist the health and function of the
ovaries. Sweet Potatoes look like the pancreas and actually
balance the glycaemic index of diabetics.
Oranges, Grapefruits, and other Citrus fruits look just like the mammary glands of the female and actually assist the
health of the breasts and the movement of lymph in and out
of the breasts. Onions look like the body's cells. Today's
research shows onions help clear waste materials from all of the body cells. They even produce tears which wash the epithelial layers of the
eyes. A working companion, Garlic, also helps eliminate waste materials and
dangerous free radicals from the body. Enjoy life - it has an expiration date. And be kind to everyone you meet; each of us carries a burden others cannot see.

INFORMAL DINNER/DANCE & RALLY If you didn't go this year, you missed “a right
good do!” The weather could have been better but
you cannot have everything as the Informal itself was very good. A few problems that we had last
year were taken care of and
the D.J excelled himself! [Don’t know who he is
but he turns up every
year like a bad penny! -
only joking Denis, you kept the dance floor full
all night.]
Thanks too to Joan Baxter for organising the evening as well as running the rally with
Joan & Geoff, not forgetting Barry
and of course, the two dogs.

SETTLE—EASTER Arrived at Settle on Good Friday to an afternoon of rain, but everyone got
onto the field ok with a bit of pushing and a bit of assistance from Neil’s
Terrano. It did fair up for flag so that was good.
On Good Friday it was our Golden Wedding Anniversary. 50 years and
some said it would never last.We would like to thank Val and Ian +Sarah
and Craig also Jane and Neil for letting us highjack their rally after flag
for our Cake and Wine with all the ralliers. We hope everyone enjoyed it.
We would also like to say thanks to Ian and the gang for putting up the
coleman shelter as we suspect it might have been more for our benefit
than theirs, anyway we are very grateful for their help. Also many thanks
to all on the rally for their good wishes and cards etc.
As we had family with us either on the rally or on the site next door it
turned out to be for us a week-end full of surprises and also very hectic
to say the least it took us a week to get over it. haha.
Thanks for a great rally Margaret and Malcolm Adams

IT IS 200 YEARS SINCE THE BATTLE OF WATERLOO SO THOUGHT
SOME OF YOU MIGHT LIKE TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED & WHERE!
To understand Waterloo, it’s important to know
Napoleon had tried to establish a European empire under his military dictatorship since 1804.
The British defeated him at Trafalgar in 1805, but
Napoleon went on to invade countries across Europe before being forced to abdicate. He returned to Paris
in March 1815, prompting Britain, Prussia, Russia
and Austria to declare war.
In June, Napoleon invaded Belgium, hoping to capture Brussels. He sent troops to fight Wellington, and led a battalion against General Blucher's Prussian
troops. Wellington's army wasn't defeated but Blucher retreated.
The scene was set for a final, decisive battle. The Battle of Waterloo was fought on Sunday, 18th June 1815, near Waterloo
in present-day Belgium, then part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands.
A French army under the command of Napoleon was defeated by the armies of
the Seventh Coalition, comprising an Anglo-allied army under the command of the Duke of Wellington combined with a Prussian army under the command of
Gebhard von Blücher.
Upon Napoleon's return to power in March 1815, many states that had opposed him formed the Seventh Coalition and began to mobilize armies. Two large
forces under Wellington and Blücher assembled close to the north-eastern border
of France. Napoleon chose to attack in the hope of destroying them before they could join in a coordinated invasion of France with other members of the
coalition. Waterloo was the decisive engagement of the Waterloo Campaign and
Napoleon's last.
According to Wellington, the battle was "the nearest-run thing you ever saw in your life". The defeat at Waterloo ended Napoleon's rule as Emperor of the
French, and marked the end of his Hundred Days return from exile.

SETTLE—EASTER
Just to say thank you to Ian and Val and Craig and Sarah, who stepped in
for Paul and June. It is a lovely venue right next to the river, and we
managed to walk into Settle despite the mud after heavy rain on Thursday
night. After this we were lucky with some good weather.
Also thanks to Malcolm and Margaret Adams who were celebrating their
Golden Wedding Anniversary and plied us with wine, beer and cake!
Thanks again to everybody. Sue and Steve Cowell
THE LIDO—KNARESBOROUGH
Thanks to Sandra, Trevor, Pete and Jen for an enjoyable rally.
We enjoyed a walk into Knaresborough on Wednesday morning and
a quiz and excellent supper on Thursday night. On Friday morning we
thoroughly enjoyed a full English Breakfast cooked by the marshals and a
band of helpers. Once again we had really good weather.
Excellent venue for walking into Knaresborough or catching a bus to
Harrogate at the nearby bus stop. Thanks everybody.
Sue and Steve Cowell
EASTER FOLLOW- ON AT THE LIDO KNARESBOROUGH
Congratulations to the marshalling team and helpers for getting everyone
sited without too much hassle as quite a lot of vans arrived at once.
We set off from Harewood where we had been for Easter, so we would
arrive about an hour after the rally opened and avoid the rush!
The weather could have been warmer but on the whole it behaved itself.
Various things were arranged for the enjoyment of the ralliers, but the
best had to be the communal breakfast on the Friday morning.
How they cooked all those meals and stayed calm is beyond me!
So thanks to Sandra & Trevor, and Jen & Pete [who stepped in because
Paul was unwell.] We all had a good time. Janice Benson
HIGH GRUNDON FARM
We would like to thank the marshals for their hard work and dedication in
providing a fantastic rally. There were over 30 children to cater for from
morning until night.
On the Saturday they organised Arts & Crafts, Karaoke and played games
They ended the night with Horse Racing & a Disco. Everyone thoroughly
enjoyed themselves. Thanks again to Annie, Kevin, Bev & Craig from

Stoke Bruerne Rally May 2015 This was our second visit to a Stoke Bruerne rally. June, Tim, Sue and Maurice
made us very welcome and provided us with a welcome pack.
Once again we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, we had nights entertainment
undercover, a family walk and a bar meal one night. Someone on the rally was celebrating a special birthday and plied us with cake and wine during the Friday
afternoon. The rally field is by the side of the Grand Union Canal. A very short
walk puts you on the bank of the canal and its seven locks. The weather was very kind to us which makes watching the long narrowboats negotiate the locks
very interesting. I am sure ice cream tastes better on warm days.
Whilst sitting watching the boats a volunteer lock keeper asked if we would be
interested in purchasing a very good narrow boat that his friend was selling. We
declined the offer but he went on to say the boat cost new £150,000 but could be bought for £75,000. It appears the boats have to be craned out every 2/5 years to
have their bottoms cleaned and repainted plus a further £4000 a year water fees.
I think us East Yorkshire men need to learn from the skippers of these narrow
boats and sharpen up our acts. The unwritten procedure goes something like this
The skipper drives the boat at around 3 or 4 mph and drinks plenty of tea which
is made and delivered to him; he manages to drink this while driving. On arrival at a lock he takes the boat close to the edge of the canal and his wife
or partner jumps ashore which normally involves climbing up the bank with a
spanner in her hand. She walks to the lock and winches some small sluice gates
open to either empty or fill the lock to balance the water levels. Following this she has to open a very heavy gate and then walks round to the other side of the
lock to open a second gate. The boat is driven into the lock and the pilot throws
a steady rope for her to deal with. All the gates have to be closed then further winching the sluice gates. She then has to repeat this procedure at the other end
of the lock. The husband is now ready to drive the boat out of the lock and leaves
his wife to close the lock again winching and closing Because the locks are so
close together she doesn’t bother to get back on board but walks to the next lock and repeats the whole procedure again. I was tempted to ask if I could see the
ladies hands to check for blisters but as they had a heavy winch handle in their
hands I thought it would be safer to continue with my ice cream. The ladies appear to have developed a calmness and don’t appear to react to
instructions and encouragement from
their husbands who are still drinking tea and nots let us forget they still have the
winching brace in their hand. During our
stay I didn’t witness one skipper wearing
the spanner around his head. [contd]

Us men need to consider putting in a carefully worded proposition for this year’s AGM indicating.
Proposition We are to be treated as canal boat skippers and must be obeyed at
all times and follow our instructions and they must refrain from hitting us with
the caravan corner steady brace. Awning erection could also be included.
I would welcome any help with the wording of the proposition before I go to
Hull Royal Infirmary Accident and Emergency to get this head wound dressed.

[The cheapest thing in Life is Laughter and a Smile! WELL DONE TO YOU ALL—A BIG EAST YORKSHIRE THANK YOU
FROM TWO OLDIES—JUNE & RAY SMITH
FRAISTHORPE Friday we were welcomed in by two young ladies and two old men, we
felt very welcome, then on to our pitch, I think where ever you are on this
site it’s good.
Up early Saturday morning, what a glorious day, sun shining, what a day
to be near the beach. Then as usual—men hard at it cooking breakfast
while the ladies powder their noses or whatever they do, then up came the
family and that’s when I was told that I was expected to walk into
Bridlington, approx. 10 to 15 miles or that’s what it felt like when we got
back. I could not use the F1 Grand Prix as an excuse as it was not on! We
met the Rally Marshals on the way there— I was hoping to be able to go
back with them but was not allowed!
Seriously it’s a brilliant venue. We sat outside and had a barbeque quite
late as it was such a warm night.
It was a beautiful relaxing weekend a big thanks to Jane, Maureen, Neil
and Steve It’s what Rallying is all about

WHAT CAN WE SAY?
MALCOLM WORSNOP
died Sat May 30th
We have just lost a much loved
member of the Centre who will be
sadly missed! A true Gentleman.
Our thoughts & condolences go to his widow,
Doreen and their children Dawn & Martin and family.
[There will be more about Malcolm in the AGM edition]
70 YEARS SINCE THE END OF WORLD WAR II We have just got back from a holiday in France. On our boat going across
the Channel on June 4th, from Portsmouth to Caen, were several Veterans
[all wearing their medals] obviously going over to take part in a
remembrance service. Some of them looked quite sprightly considering
they all must have been at least in their very late 80’s.
On our way back from our holiday we stayed near Caen and went to the
British War Cemetery at Bayeux to pay our respects and to thank those
who gave their lives for our freedom from a life under Hitler. We have
been before several years ago but thought it appropriate to do so again. It
was a lovely day and there were lots of people there. The grounds are
immaculately kept and it was very peaceful despite being close to
Bayeux. It was very moving to see all the headstones and names of the
young men. A very moving moment was when we came
across the grave of a Yorkshire soldier who had died on
the day I was born. If you get
chance to go to Bayeux then
please make time to go to the
Cemetery as well as visiting
the town and the Bayeux
Tapestry. It is well worth it!

How to negotiate a cheaper deal with your dentist!
A Glasgow man phones a dentist to enquire about the cost for a tooth extraction. “£85 pounds for an extraction, sir” the dentist replied.
“£85 quid! Huv ye no’got anythin’ cheaper?”
“That’s the normal charge,” said the dentist. “Whit aboot if ye didnae use any anaesthetic?”
“That’s unusual, sir, but I could do it and would knock £15 pounds off.”
“Whit aboot if ye used one of your dentist trainees and still without any anaesthetic?” “I can’t guarantee their professionalism and it’ll be painful. But
the price could drop by £20 pounds.”
“How aboot if ye make it a trainin’ session, ave yer student do the extraction
with the other students watchin’ and learnin?” “It’ll be good for the students”, mulled the dentist. “I’ll charge you £5 pounds but it will be traumatic.”
“Och, now yer talkin’ laddie! It’s a deal,” said the Scotsman.
“Can ye confirm an appointment for the wife next Tuesday then?”

A-Frames Motorhome owners are being advised not to use an
A-frame to tow a car in Europe following new guidance
issued by the Department of Transport (DofT).
Under the 1968 Vienna Convention on road traffic, a citizen of one European state can use a vehicle in another European state as long as it is legal in his or
her own country. However, the DofT guidance says the assumed protections
offered by the Treaty do not cover A-frames because they post-date it and are therefore outside its scope. Furthermore, the UK government do not intend to
implement recent changes to EU light-trailer brakes regulations. This means that
A-frames will remain acceptable within the UK only.
The conclusion is that following this clarification from the DofT, motorhome
owners wishing to tow a car using an A-frame in mainland Europe, the car must be on a trailer.

THE EAST YORKSHIRE FLAG [DID YOU KNOW] The flag was chosen by a public vote, following a competition to
design a flag for the East Riding which was launched on Monday 7
January 2013 on BBC Radio Humberside. Six designs were selected
from numerous entries, by a panel of judges, for everyone to vote
for their favourite design. The white rose is displayed in the East Riding style (upside
down from the usual Yorkshire rose). The blue represents maritime activities and the
green represents agricultural industries. The blue is placed on the hoist side to represent
the riding's connection to the whole of Yorkshire whilst the green is placed towards the
fly to represent it's position to the east. [Why not Buy One & Fly One!]

BE CAREFUL WHO YOU TRUST
A young man shopping in a supermarket noticed a little old lady following him around.
If he stopped, she stopped. Furthermore she
kept staring at him. She finally overtook him at the checkout, and
she turned to him and said, "I hope I haven't
made you feel ill at ease; it's just that you
look so much like my late son." He answered, "That's okay."
"I know it's silly, but if you'd call out 'Good bye,
Mom' as I leave the store, it would make me feel so happy."
She then went through the checkout, and as she
was on her way out of the store, the man called out, "Goodbye, Mom."
The little old lady waved and smiled back at him..
Pleased that he had brought a little sunshine into
someone's day, he went to pay for his groceries.
"That comes to £75.50" said the cashier.
"How come so much? I only bought 5 items." The cashier replied, "Yeah, but your Mother
said you'd be paying for her things, too."

Dear Jane, It was both a pleasure and an honour for Margaret and myself to represent our centre at your recent 40th Celebration Rally. From start to finish it was so apparent that your committee and helpers had put many hours of effort into the rally to ensure its success.
Over the years we have rallied many times with your centre and have always been made to feel most welcome and last weekend was no exception. A special thanks also must go to Sandra who despite her personal problems put her heart and soul into standing proud and firm at the helm.
We would like to wish the East Yorkshire all the very best for the future, with the spirit that you
have we know you will continue from strength to strength.
Kind Regards and many thanks Howard and Margaret [Yorks Dales]

A Thousand Rallies later ! Our caravanning life began in 1969 when a colleague of Viki’s suggested that we hire a caravan and try a caravan holiday, which we did - and thoroughly
enjoyed it. Therefore, in 1970 we bought a cheap and cheerful Sprite caravan
costing £400.00 and applied to join the Caravan Club. At that, time applications
had to be endorsed by a current Club member. The Club accepted the application and we were allocated to the East Group of the Yorkshire Centre. Very shortly
afterwards we received a copy of the 1970 Yorkshire Centre Brochure which
listed all rallies organised by member groups. The rally venues were so close to home we could not understand why anyone would want to take their caravan for
a weekend to Skirlaugh or Brough. We decided that rallying was not for us.
Until one day we passed a group of caravans parked neatly in a field. We saw
someone at the entrance to the field and stopped to ask what was happening. He told us it was a Caravan Club rally and introduced himself as Paul
Arrowsmith, the Chairman of the East Group. He then went on to explain what
rallying was about and recommended we try it. Following his advice, our first
rally was at North Dalton in April 1972. The rally fee was 60p.
As luck would have it, there were several other families on the rally with children of similar ages to ours. Any parent with children knows the Children
set the rally programme for the season because they want to go to the same
rallies as their friends. We were no exception. We hardly missed a weekend in
our first season, which included the first Northern Centres Rally at Newby Hall. Our family were always active in the Teenagers. Jenny was the Chairman in
1976 and Katie held various other positions on the Teenagers' Committee.
They both marshalled at teenage rallies over the time they were involved.
The first rally we marshalled was Walkington Hayride at Park Farm Walkington
in 1974 with Shirley and David Smith. There were 100 vans attending which was quite a daunting prospect for new marshals. Those were also the days when
the Rally Marshals had to dig the Elsan pit.! We reached our one hundredth rally
June 1976. We do not have a record of the number of rallies that we have
marshalled but they include Bank Holidays at Flamborough, New Year Rallies at Wykeham, Easter Rallies at York Racecourse, Joint Yorkshire Sports Rallies
and the Six Star Rally.
The biggest rally we were involved in running was the Northern Centres Rally at
Dalton Park in 1979 when Denis Cooney was the Chairman and Michael was the
Rally Officer. The final attendance at the rally was just over 1000 vans. Because of the immaculate condition of the rally field at all times, we were presented
with the Keep Britain Tidy award.
The first major celebration rally organised in the Centre was the Tenth
Anniversary and Five Hundredth Rally held at Bishop Burton College.
31
Held on May Day weekend in 1985 it attracted over 300 caravans. As Centre Chairman, we were involved in co-ordinating the many events organised at the
rally. This included three separate functions held simultaneously in the college
on three nights!
Our first International Rally was the highly
successful event at Lincoln in 1999 organised by
the Caravan Club. International Rallies in Bavaria, Ghent, Barcelona, Bologna and Ireland followed
this.Since 1987, we have also attended many other
Centres' rallies on the Continent.
During the forty-three years we have rallied, we
have both been involved with the Centre and Club organisation. Michael was first elected to the East
Group Committee in 1974 as Rally Secretary. Over
the years -between us we have held the positions of Centre Secretary, Vice
Chairman, Chairman and Treasurer. Mike has also served as Northern Centres Liaison Chairman, Club Council member and Northern Region Secretary.
We continue to be involved as Michael holds a position on the Club Field Staff.
Our first caravan rally at North Dalton in 1972 opened the door to a life of
friendships and a wide range of new experiences. We quickly appreciated that
Centres provide a welcoming environment for individuals and families. Through the Caravan Club, we have made many friends all over the country and visited
towns and villages throughout the United Kingdom and Europe. We look foward
to it continuing. Viki and Mike Tripp May 2015

"Hello. Is that you Sarge?” "Yes?” "We have a situation here. A woman has shot her husband for stepping on the floor she had just mopped
clean.” "Have you arrested the woman?” "No. The floor is still wet."
This is the sixth of a series about East Yorkshire Centre members who have
received the 1000th rally award. [Don’t forget to let me know if you have
an important rally coming up so I can order the plaque.] Tim Norris

CAN YOU RELATE TO THIS? Sent in by Sue Holroyd. The kids were a lot more contented, They didn't need money for kicks, Just a game with their mates on the road, And sometimes the Saturday flicks. I remember the shop on the corner, Where a pen'orth of lollies was sold Do you think I'm a bit too nostalgic? Or is it...I'm just getting old? I remember the 'loo' was the lav And the bogey man came in the night, It wasn't the least bit funny Going "out the back" with no light.
The interesting items we perused From the newspapers cut into squares, And hung on a peg in the loo,
It took little to keep us amused.
The clothes were boiled in the copper With plenty of rich foamy suds But the ironing seemed never ending
As Mum pressed everyone's 'duds'.
I remember the slap on my backside, And the taste of soap if I swore Anorexia and diets weren't heard of
And we hadn't much choice what we wore.
Do you think that bruised our ego? Or our initiative was destroyed? We ate what was put on the table
And I think life was better enjoyed.
Have you checked your Tyres ? People tend to forget that tyres are an
import part of the safety equipment used when caravanning, they are after
all the only bit that come into contact with the road when travelling !
You should regularly check your tyre pressures and look out for wear,
cracks, splits, bulges, nails, flat spots and general degrading of the rubber.
Your Owner handbook
should give details of
pressures etc and further
information can be obtained
from organisations such as
The Caravan Club and
motoring organisations
On the whole most organisations suggest that even if your tyres look OK
you should change them after 5 years, even if they have not done many
miles. However do you check the actual age of a tyre? The picture above
shows the “DOT” information on the side wall of a typical tyre. The date
code here indicates 2704 which means the 27th week of the year 2004
Tech Support: 'OK. In the bottom left hand side of the screen, can you see
the 'OK' button displayed?'
Customer: 'Wow. How can you see my screen from there?'

Q3 Re: Castleton site, this is the last year we can rally on this site, why?
A Could be that it is a popular site so is only open to individual
bookings. See list of sites from the Caravan Club.
Q4 Re: Bridlington site, why has the path to the facilities not been put in from
the bottom area?
A The path was missed off, forgotten by the contractors and now it is very
difficult to put in as there is no room.
Q5 Re: CC insurance inconsistent service. We have two cars under my part-
ners name but I am the principal driver of the tow car and wish to have this car insured under my name. EG did not get back to me so I have insured
under another company.
A If the contact centre can’t answer your request then they should
contact the underwriters for a definitive answer. The Club will contact the
member direct on Monday.
Q6 Can we design a better system for booking re: Rowntree and Chatsworth, I can’t get through to book, would it be better if we have a twice yearly
system to help them cope?
A Biannual is not possible to do due to the type of system. It was suggested
that the member should leave their details with the wardens of popular sites
who will get back to you when there is a cancellation.
Q7 Re: increasing cost of membership etc, I understand it is due to
re-furbishing old sites and adding more hard standing, I don’t think extra
hard standings are required.
A All year sites do not use all the pitches due to the weather and some have a
low number of hard standings so there is a need to increase. Plus more and more have motorhomes which need hard standing.
Q8 Is it possible to have wastewater on site for washing off shoes, dogs etc?
A Yes easy fix, we are putting this in some sites.

Q9 Re: new leisure battery, charge went straight down, I explained how I charged it and was told this was correct. Eventually it was found it to be
faulty. What is the difference in leisure charger, car battery charger and
caravan charger?
A Leisure charger is usually higher charge others trickle charge but caravan
and car chargers are fine. A battery life is usually 2 to 3 years.
Q10 What is the % of members who keep the booking made at first?
A approx 75%.
Q Do you think by that a deposit would help?
A Deposits are very expensive to administrate to take and give back etc. The
Camping and Caravan Club who request a deposit with a booking have the
same cancellation rate.
Q11 I had a letter to say that the fluid in my Aldi heating system needed
changing after 2 years but I have had it for 5 years is this correct?
A There are 2 types of inhibitor for Aldi systems, pink and blue. The pink has a life span of 5 years, the blue needs to be replaced every 2 years. Mixing
pink and blue is not recommended.
Q12 Re: caravan service, this should include checks to heater, oven and fridge to
make sure they are safe.
A We do check them on a service but if they are taken out and serviced it will
cost much more.
Q13 Should a fridge sound loud as mine sounds like a Bunsen burner, is this
correct?
A No not that loud.
Q14 Could manufacturers put a flap on the outside in order to service a fridge
without taking it out and could the CC make moves to get this done?
A No – some new vans have a larger ventilation grill which allows
maintenance to the burner.
Q15 If you fit a solar panel on a caravan and it flies off are you insured for the
damage which might be incurred?
A You need to let your insurance know that the van has had additional
fitments/modification.
Q16 Why do manufacturers keep changing locks on wheels can’t we have
consistency Alco must be making a fortune?
A It is a change for design, some locks come with the caravan some are an
extra. You will not get all manufacturers using the same alloy wheel.
Q The lock is very difficult to get in line between the spokes it would be good
if something could be devised to help.
Q17 Re: Tredgar, S Wales on the hard standing, rock pegs break because the
ground is too hard right to the top, what are you to do/use?
A Some ground is very hard there is not much which can be done.

MORE LOOKING BACK AT OUR NEW YEAR RALLIES
As there was another
year before the 21st
Century started, for
New Year 1999/2000
we turned the clock
back 100 years to
Victorian Times. Alan
Thacker made us two full size Victorian
Street lights which we had on the stage and
we all raided our Grandparents attics for the
right clothes to wear! The following year
we went forward 100 years
to 2100 and pretended that
the room at Askham Bryan
was actually a large space
ship. We decorated the
walls with stars to look as
tho they were portholes
and suspended from above
were all the planets. On the
stage, when we opened the
curtains back after the space-
craft had landed, we had 2
life size astronauts with a
moon buggy and landing
craft which had been worked
on over Christmas by the
male marshals and the ladies
had hardly seen them!
We followed “Into the Future”
with “Squirkles” [squares and
circles] and then “Panto” when
just about everyone dressed up,
from the young .....
To the not so young!!!
[have you guessed who he is?]

We again thought of not running anymore New Year Rallies but someone
said we ought to go to the 25th so we carried on. Our last few fancy dress
themes were “Gangsters & Mols” “Around the World” and “Uniforms”
At the rally in 2004/5, [Around the World] Richard and I were both ill. I
started on the first night and so missed that and the fancy dress night but
managed New Year’s Eve until midnight. Joanne [our daughter] came for
me the next day and took me home, Richard was ill from New Year’s Day
morning and although he stayed at the caravan, the other marshals ran the
last night themselves. Luckily Richard felt well enough on January 2nd to
bring the van home. [The only rally we had been ill at in all those years!]
In 2006/2007 we ran our last “Happy Families” Rally at York and what
else could we choose for the 25th rally theme but “Silver”
John Bloom made our skirts
and we had bought the silver
hats in Belgium in the
November when a gang of us
went over on a coach trip to
the Christmas markets.
Not long before the last one
at York, we found out that
Eggborough Village Hall was free for New Year. It is a much smaller
venue and with us now being quite a bit older than when we first ran a
New Year Rally, decided that it was at last time for us to slow down and
so we arranged to run the rally with the theme of “Wine, Dine & Dance.”
which I will tell you about next time.

Waiting in a lay by ready to catch speeding drivers, a Police Officer sees a car puttering along the A22 at well under the 30
mile per hour limit. Says he to himself: "This driver is just as
dangerous as a speeder!"
So he turns on his twos and blues and pulls the driver over. Approaching the car,
he notices that there are five old ladies, two in the front seats and three in the
back.. .wide eyed and white as ghosts.
The driver, obviously confused, says to him "Officer, I don't understand, I was
doing exactly the speed limit! What seems to be the problem?"
"Ma'am," the officer replies, "you weren't speeding, but you should know that driving slower than the speed limit can also be a danger
to other drivers."
"Slower than the speed limit? No sir, I was doing the speed limit exactly,
twenty-two miles an hour!" ......the old woman says a bit proudly.
The Police officer, trying to contain a chuckle explains to her that A22 is the
road number, not the speed limit.
A bit embarrassed, the woman grins and thanks the officer for pointing out her
error. "But before I let you go, Ma'am, I have to ask, is everyone in this car OK?
These women seem awfully shaken, and they haven't made a sound this whole
time," the officer asks.
"Oh, they'll be ok in a minute officer. We've just come off the A120."
